Awesome. Less components, same range, less to go wrong. Besides, half the time I find myself shifting quickly up or down two gears at a time, so obviously I'm not using all the range anyhow. Love the choice.
I run box two prime 9 group set since mid-March and I love it shifts really nicely. With Box components they are in the right path of less is more, and I don't maintain my bike as frequently once a 3x8 drivetrain.
Comparing my SRAM 12 speed to my son's Box Four 8 speed and my wife's Microshift Advent 9 speed I can confirm that they are both more reliable, need very little fiddling with and are considerably cheaper than my 12 speed. I'm also loving seeing some new competition in the drivetrain field as well. Those massive 12 cog cassettes are really just adding weight and headaches. From personal experience I'm in full agreement with the 9 speed choice here. Great choice (also the forks and wheels looking to make this a real blast).
YES! I just converted my 2x9 to a 1x11. Sooo complicated and fiddly and I really don’t need all those middle gears. 11 to 50 is perfect. Viva la 9 speed!
been running Box Two for a few years now and definitely do not miss those extra gears. It is simplicity at it's finest. Their customer support is top notch as well.
To me box is on track. Range is important, but the habit of jumping multiple gears tells me less gears while retaining range is the way to go. I also am a big fan of the new silent, but instant engagement hubs out there. Buzz hubs really distract from the ride imho.
I've been running BOX 1 and 2 11 speeds on my bikes. So far so good. Seems pretty durable. I've had the box 2 for over a year now with no issues. You can usually find these really cheap on ebay.
Just purchased the group. Gave up on xt I broke 2 rear derailleurs in 2 weeks and was denied warranty. It’s plastic near the clutch and broke in the same spot twice.
I wanted to put the box 9 on my bike to replace the aging 11sp sram, It only goes on a shimano freehub though so will need to swap out my freehub before doing the upgrade :)
I love the prime 9. I would buy one if i was building my own bike. The practicality of having 5-6 small cogs and having 2-3 big cogs for climbing is really good for trails where you ride up it and go down really fast. Nice choice guys!
Interesting choice. I tried SRAM EX1 11-48 8-speed and found that the gaps between gears were a bit too large. Maybe that 1 more gear will make the BOX system usable. I'd be more likely to think so if the range was 11-48.
That Axe chainset is over 800g could have saved 200g with a Shimano SLX around the same price on your site, and the Box cassette is 33% heavier (645g) vs a Sunrace MX3 11-46T (435g). That's nearly half a kilo right there with equally tough parts.
i think sram and shimano will bend and follow the trend in 9 and 8 speed clutched derailleur shifter system and make their own version once they feel there still a market on it and money to be made.
Always said I would be happy with 8 gears spread out, people said I was nuts. Now that they did it and Seth from berm peak put it on his own bike its not a bad idea. Well 9 instead of 8.
I still run 9 speed but yikes , the pricetag on Box isn't that amazing. I'll stick with the old low end Shimano cassettes as long as there's still stock
Looks like a great choice! I wonder how many of those 12 speeds most riders actually use. Simpler and cheaper gives Box a proper differentiation, hope it sells well!
I find myself double shifting and ignoring so many sprockets down the bottom end of my cassette but do tend to make use of every sprocket at the top end for climbing
This is cool, not sure that slightly bigger cassette jumps on a mtb (9sp vs a 12sp) is really an issue - isn't steady cadence more of a road issue than one for undulating technical terrain?
Just going to drop my suggestion/guess (since the video has already been shot) for the wheelset: Newmen Evolution. I've heard people talking but never have I ever seen them in person.
Very nice. I’m actually considering changing to a box 9 since my mech broke. I don’t even use all the gears on my 12 speed so why not try out a 9 speed...?
@@chainreactioncycles Looking forward to seeing the build progress , love that are using lesser known/loved components that are not out of reach for the average persons pocket. Great work CRC !!
Without a crankset to complete the drivetrain for Box the problem is after you find a good one, you are at the price point of at least an SX or Deore groupset. If thats the case advent X or 9 becomes a cheaper option and Box just becomes a unique story piece only unless you want a lower Box groupset like the three or four. What a crap gap market to be in.
More importantly: are these components fully compatible with shimano 9 speed? Because I have a lot of rear mech and shifter lying around. And what's the largest cassette sprocket to fit a SLX or XT 9-speed rear mech?
I hate anything over 9 speed,i have 2 1x10 bikes, and the chains are way less durable, and the shifting fiddly. One of my friends has 1x12 on both his bikes, and they have a lot of quirks also.Im waiting for a 7 speed 42t cassette with a clutched derailleur, that would be the dream.
Technically there are only two things important for modern mtb drivetrains: 1. Range between the hardest and easiest gear 2. No Chaindrops or overly swinging chain on rough terrain Thats it! 12 or 13 gears are not important!

9 speeds for fun should suffice, which is what this awesome hardtail is going to be for, I like it🤘😀
Great choice! I’ve heard really good things about box
9 speed is dead , I'm running a 2x8 😬
Great underdog video as always ! Keep it up guys 👍🤞
Excellent choice! Now... Does this mean you carry Box Components on CRC too?
Been riding for 5 months. Love it
Wow that was unexpected. Some would say 'something little different but kinda the same'.
nice one
Thanks ml_AT - Keep watching our series to see how this build shapes up!
Mmmmm reminds me of seth
🤣
Woosh
It's great that you are keeping it simple on this hardtail build. I'm liking Box's philosophy on this. Simple and less weight for increased fun!
Love this setup, the smaller cogs are close range and the bigger one's wider.
And you can use a stronger chain.
Awesome. Less components, same range, less to go wrong. Besides, half the time I find myself shifting quickly up or down two gears at a time, so obviously I'm not using all the range anyhow. Love the choice.

The Box Components Gen 2 Prime 9 Drivetrain will come to market in September 2023. I can’t wait. This is great!
Something a little different, but kind of the same.
Great choice.
Good job homie "Seth's bike hacks'
been running Box Two for a few years now and definitely do not miss those extra gears. It is simplicity at it's finest. Their customer support is top notch as well.
So cool that they put this on the bike im really exited
Awesome Ethan, glad you like it - make sure you're subscribed and entered for your chance to win the completed bike :)
I like the simplicity! You got a super fast cog and a super easy cog. Everything in between is a plus. 9 speed here will do the job!
To me box is on track. Range is important, but the habit of jumping multiple gears tells me less gears while retaining range is the way to go.
I also am a big fan of the new silent, but instant engagement hubs out there. Buzz hubs really distract from the ride imho.
I've just ordered a box 3 prime 9 drivetrain. Will update when fitted and ridden properly.
I've been running BOX 1 and 2 11 speeds on my bikes. So far so good. Seems pretty durable. I've had the box 2 for over a year now with no issues. You can usually find these really cheap on ebay.
I have the Box Two 11 speed on my current bike and have to say it’s shifts as well as the SRAM and Shimano groups. And got it for 40% off so win win.
I think that 9 speed can work just as well, as long as you still have similar range of the gears and teeth.
YES! 9 is enough! especially if you aren't racing. Great choice
Just purchased the group. Gave up on xt I broke 2 rear derailleurs in 2 weeks and was denied warranty. It’s plastic near the clutch and broke in the same spot twice.
I’ve been happy riding a 9s 11x50 all the while and am considering to step down to 11x42
For me yes. I run a 9 speed 11-40 tooth 1x setup, with a 10-speed SLX clutch mech mated to a 9-speed SRAM shifter which works well
I'm all for simplicity and saving a few quid so this seems perfect! Less shifts, less to go wrong I guess??!! And less chance of me falling off 😂😂
@@MD.media01 Depends wether you buy Box One, Two or Three.
Simplicity!! Great groupset!! Cant wait to see the final build!
Perfect ebike groupset
I never use the 1st, 11 and 12 sprockets so I would love having a 9er like this
Suggested this group set on the last video it looks insane! Glad to see it happen
9 speed drivetrain and 26 inch wheel ain't dead yet 🙃
Still using my 26er gt chucker 3.0 with 9 speed Deore XT groupset
I’m still on my GT I-drive 26” 9 speed!
Looking awesome! Loving the underdog components and learning what’s out there!
I wanted to put the box 9 on my bike to replace the aging 11sp sram, It only goes on a shimano freehub though so will need to swap out my freehub before doing the upgrade :)
Long live 9 speed! Loving how this build is shaping up!
I love the prime 9. I would buy one if i was building my own bike. The practicality of having 5-6 small cogs and having 2-3 big cogs for climbing is really good for trails where you ride up it and go down really fast. Nice choice guys!
Awesome Ashton - Glad you like our choice!
It makes sense to have less gears with the same uphill and basically the same downhill ratios with more material in the chain and casette.
This bike looking like a Beauty, fingers crossed
Interesting choice. I tried SRAM EX1 11-48 8-speed and found that the gaps between gears were a bit too large. Maybe that 1 more gear will make the BOX system usable. I'd be more likely to think so if the range was 11-48.
9 speed is fine in my book, currently using 10 speed and never had an issue

Great choice🤩 wanna try!!!
I miss my quick shifting 9 speed. 12 speed took a bit getting used to.
I still run 9 speed but yikes , the pricetag on Box isn't that amazing. I'll stick with the old low end Shimano cassettes as long as there's still stock
Box isn’t overpriced
Agree. Might as well just use cheap shimano components and replace them more often. I will probably be cheaper in the long run.
Looks durable!
Nice (and don't they say, less is more)🍻
I've used a 11 speed and 9 speed. I prefer 9 speed because it's simply as capable as the others
so awesome i like the groupsets but i can't wait the full build of the bike 🔥
This is cool, not sure that slightly bigger cassette jumps on a mtb (9sp vs a 12sp) is really an issue - isn't steady cadence more of a road issue than one for undulating technical terrain?
I use a SRAM X9 shifter and derailer with a SunRace wide range cassette, 12/50 . I'm riding more and shifting less.
Prime 9 seems to be a good groupset with good intention behind the design. Anyway, I wish CRC to also sell Shimano Deore M5100 11sp groupset as well.
Really interesting choice.
Wow, i didnt see that comming 🤣🤣🤣, but de hex wheelset 😍😍😍
im using slx 11 speed on my xc and slx 12 speed on my enduro, if it were up to me, i would go with 9 - 10 speed, cause of the problems i experienced.
This is new but greatly done ❤️❤️❤️
Just going to drop my suggestion/guess (since the video has already been shot) for the wheelset: Newmen Evolution. I've heard people talking but never have I ever seen them in person.
I suggested this and it’s awesome they did it
Darragh they’re trying to build it up with unusual parts from smaller companies
Darragh box two prime nine Is near Deore 12 speed
i would’ve expected box 3, maybe microshift, but this is a nice surprise
Very nice. I’m actually considering changing to a box 9 since my mech broke. I don’t even use all the gears on my 12 speed so why not try out a 9 speed...?
the gaps on the cassette look massive and glunky but in saying that i am interested to try it
I have a 3X9 hardtail and I’ve always thought it’s excessive. Maybe it’ll try this thing out if I don’t win!
Nice I want that groupset
If you have the same range as a 12 speed group set at a lower cost its a win win, and like the one press 3 gear change!
Exactly Liam, win win! Make sure you're subscribed and entered for your chance to win the completed bike!
@@chainreactioncycles Looking forward to seeing the build progress , love that are using lesser known/loved components that are not out of reach for the average persons pocket. Great work CRC !!
Might as well just hand it over 👌🏼
Like the idea, of a affordable bike
Would the cassette work with Shimano Sora deraileur and shifter??? Or what is the largest Box cassette for the Sora?
in my opinion best grupset for XC RACES
Can that 9 be use with a 52 crank wheel?
Can’t wait to try this when I win 😂
Thats gonna be my bike mate :D
John Dough Not a chance bud, I can basically see it in my garage already ;)
congrats you actually won!
Like seth's hardtail setup.😁😁😁
Budget friendly but have limited stocks in the Philippines
I would think you’d go with a micro shift advent.
Wow 😍😍i want it. Under dog that i can never afford 🤣
More importantly: are these components fully compatible with shimano 9 speed? Because I have a lot of rear mech and shifter lying around. And what's the largest cassette sprocket to fit a SLX or XT 9-speed rear mech?
GoatLink? Have you tried? (Wolf Tooth)
@@sADYc not yet, thanks for the tip!
MEN! I HAVE THE BOX FOUR 8 SPD groupset. And it's just more than enough, the 9 spd should be better!
What about my SHIMANO TOURNEY 7 SPEED 14-28t WITHOUT CLUTCH GROUPSET!
I have a 26er hardtail 9 spd 11-34 and a 29er 9spd 11-42. Just the right gear ratio coz all the remaining gears I have already in dem legs. XD
9 speed is great
In reality, 3x drivetrains only had about 9 to 10 actual gears. It’s not meant to reach all the sprockets on each chain ring. So 1x9 makes sense.
What happened to the Box 11 speed?
I hate anything over 9 speed,i have 2 1x10 bikes, and the chains are way less durable, and the shifting fiddly. One of my friends has 1x12 on both his bikes, and they have a lot of quirks also.Im waiting for a 7 speed 42t cassette with a clutched derailleur, that would be the dream.
Can't comment really as you failed to mention the price?! Is it a bit cheaper than XTR/Eagle or a bit cheaper than Deore?!
this could be great for budget ebike drivetrain, but, i need more gears for ppl powered
Great call JogBird! - Make sure you're subscribed and entered for your chance to win the completed bike!
Spank wheels 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Give me a 7 speed. Who really needs all those gears anyway. I wish they made 29 inch BMX bikes.
Haven't seen a 7, but there is the Box Four 8s.
Agree on the seven speed!and i believe a company called SE makes the big ripper 29 bmx
-for most groupset manufacturers 9speed is dead
-shimano producing more 7,8,9 speed groupsets (cheap tourneys) than SLX, Deore, XT, XTR
Quick question from America here. Are you Brits allergic to the word “derailleur”?!
To cool. Hope I win.. lol 🤘🏻

One would say that they are... "Thinking out of the Box"
Okay I'll leave now.
9 speed! It’s like 12 speed, but worse in every single way
Technically there are only two things important for modern mtb drivetrains:
1. Range between the hardest and easiest gear
2. No Chaindrops or overly swinging chain on rough terrain
Thats it! 12 or 13 gears are not important!
Its all fun and games till you have to do an all day climb
Still waiting for the Box Stealth Hubs 😁
The dlc chain is black, not shiny
9speed isn’t but 12 sure is
It's not alot cheaper at all. This cost me 20 quid more than my slx 12 speed at 270gbp
But, when it comes to replacing the chain, this is cheaper, also your derailleur adjustment doesn’t have to be as precise with 9spd compared to 12spd
here box two is more expensive than sram eagle 12 speed gs
wow nice ,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,
Just go single speed
