Actually in the children's books (more than one) Mei's gender is ambiguous but the author has stated that he intended for Mei to be a boy. In the CGI anime/cartoon (I'm not sure whether it's produced in Japan or not) Mei is made to be a girl and was renamed May. They even changed the colour of the fur to pink. Hope that makes it more clear.

*facepalm* It's a wolf and a goat, people can actually watch a (CHILDRENS) movie where two male characters are friends without going "OMG THEYAREGAYKAWAIIDESUYOAI!"

In the book series (which came out first), Gabu is male and Mei is genderless. In this movie film (which came out second), Gabu is male and Mei is male. In the anime series (which came out third), Gabu is male and Mei is female. Hope that helped

Well, originally Mei didn't have a gender at all. Whether Mei was a girl or a boy was up to the interpretation of the viewers.
