Ever since that damn unofficial dub, it's been super hard if not impossible for me to find the english sub version on anime streaming sites what don't just replace it with said unofficial dub now which annoys me to no end tbh. Glad this is still up despite that.

Remember everyone: Gabu and Mei stayed in that cave at crumbling hills ALL NIGHT…in a cave…just the two of them…with nothing but each others company the ENTIRE NIGHT… Let that sink in…

The dedication these two have for eachother is amazing! Also Mei’s face when thinking of how Gabu will protect him is Cuuuute! Good job on protecting your “friend” Gabu!!!

Ok 1st of all, I love how sweet they are as friends! 2nd of all, their reactions to seeing eachother for the first time is priceless as heck!!! 3rd of all, most of us can’t deny how gay the scenes where Gabu is looking at Mei’s…behind after losing his lunch is! I practically died laughing/losing my damn mind when I first saw this!!! 🤣🤣🤣 4th of all, Gabu is trying way to hard to pretend to “hate” goat meat for Mei’s sake when context clues point towards otherwise! ‘XD And finally, even if they are legit just meant to be friends in the story: tThe gay subtext is hard to deny/miss!

So cute! Seriously this movie is overall cute! The way Mei and Gabu’s relationship develops is great to see! Starting with them becoming friends by pure chance due to not knowing they’re natural predator and pray, but getting to know eachother as individuals!

Absolutely baffles me how people are in this comment section thinking it is not gay. Gay myself this felt like a huge allegory on homophobia honestly it was relatable, having a family that does not agree with who you like and having to run away from them due to it, the family trying to punish you, just because of who you love. I'm not the only one seeing it thank goodness. I heard the author intended for it to be gay but don't take my word on that. I'm not going to die on a hill for some gay animal relationship but you got to be watching with your eyes closed to miss out on the obvious

I actually like how Mei _isn't_ immediately terrified by Gabu turning out to be a wolf. It's easy to point out that, yes, Mei's mom was killed and eaten by wolves so he obviously has the right to be scared shitless of any wolf, but he also damn well remembers their meeting and talk in the barn; he hasn't forgotten that he genuinely got to know and relate to him, even finding out that they share multiple similarities. Most stories would have Mei instantly running away from Gabu the moment it turns out that he's literally his natural predator and disregard the sincere interaction and friendship-making they had when they couldn't tell what species the other one was, as if it's some serious betrayal or something. This subversion is honestly super refreshing.

初めて観た時はお母ちゃん喰われる時の音が生々しくて滅茶苦茶耳に残ったわ…でも凄く良い映画だったな。

食う者と食われる物で友達になった2人はマイノリティ。マジョリティである仲間達に虐げられながらも、自分達らしさを大切にして選んだ道がハッピーエンドでほんと良かったと思う。

I honestly think the moral of the story is even better just seeing Mei & Gabu as a platonic friendship. You can truly love a friend, to the point of being willing to sacrifice your life to keep that friendship alive. I believe that's more wholesome than there being a romantic or sexual motivator. The fact that the companionship of a friend alone is enough to be worth risking one's life is so much more wholesome.
