Think of it like a rolling start versus a standing start. a turbo suffering from compressor surge is basically stopped at every shift, and has to spool all the way back up, where a car with a proper bov system has the advantage of already being partially spooled from the previous gear.
@dahblackworm im not new to how turbos work. i understand that these cars are running BIG turbo setups, and high levels of boost. I just hear the surge sound in so many supras. I didnt know if it was something else, because as far as i knew, surge was bad for the turbo, not the engine. Im not questioning anybody's methods, these ppl know way more than i would ever try to. Just wanted to get a question answered. Thanks for responding to my question.
If you listen, you can tell it takes them a bit to spool the turbo, but once the turbo is spooled it has no effect on how fast they are. The only effect the that compressor surge has on performance is that it takes a little longer to reach full boost after the throttle has been closed.
Actually its not the BOV leaking and it doesn't give the supra its sound, it gets the sound from the way the motor is built. But that "chutter" sound is air being forced back into the turbo, the air tries to force the turbine backwards thus creating the sound known as "compressor surge"
Slightly, yes. It causes the turbo to take longer to spool on shifts. The reason for this is that the air in the charge pipes is being forced backwards through the compressor of the turbo, thus causing the shaft to run backwards which puts a lot of strain on the turbo and shortens its life. (continued)
@RandySRT The sound you're hearing is blow off, on all high boost cars you have to release the extra pressure when you shift or the engine will be over-boosted, and possibly over revved when there's no load. The BOV is on the intake piping or better on the intake manifold. Google it and read up on turbo's if you want to learn more
any turbo setup running more than 10 psi needs a bov, the bov is used so the boost plate dosen't crack under the amount of pressure being put on the intake manifold
@Ncom1 It's when the cars aren't running blow off valves. The turbo has to fight the pressure that isn't released by the normal use of a BoV, it destroys turbos, and sounds terrible, IMO.
@laminaytrap i understand how turbos work. im running 22psi on my srt4 and it doesnt make that surging sound. Its just the sound that the supra makes sounds like compressor surge, which i've been told is a bad thing. But a lot of supras make this 'surging sound'. i was just wondering why they made that sound instead of a normal BOV sound. Im not saying anything bad about supras, i love them, i was just curious as to how they get that surging sound without damaging the turbo.
@justinker13 he said 'what is that Bov (blowoff valve), the sound that the car is making, is NOT from a blowoff valve, the sound comes from NOT having one, another (disputedly incorrect) term for it is 'dosing' or 'compressor surge'.. it could also be from having a small BoV, not big enough to vent ALL of the pressure, leaving some to be chopped up by the turbine.
@georgiamelody Sure as hell sounds like compressor surge to me. Happens everytime driver takes foot off the gas. Pretty sure that is flutter caused by air going back through the compressor.
there is only one thing that makes a car dose ( whowowowo sound ) , and that is a turbo spinning backwards. That sound comes from the pod filter or if no pod filter the turbo. Not the blow off valve or waste gate.
the sound is compressor surge, and not a dump valve. if you have a turbo charged car then just take the vacuum pipe off your dump valve and then ul get compressor surge.
@brizzlefizzle no, it's called surge. Otherwise known as flutter. He's past the surge point on the compressor map. Not a big deal if you have bb turbo, but if a journal bearing thats the sound of hatred of thrust bearings
@badb0y1300 if they are going that cheap something is wrong with the title. you always gotta check that stuff. supras stock go for around 20k-35k but heavily modded ones go for around 50k-60k, even though the builder of that modded car put around 80k in that 20k car. i'd say thats a better deal buying it built already but you dont know if its done right and you dont get the satisfaction of building it yourself.
Turbo surge doesn't exactly hinder performance its mainly going to lessen the life of the turbo. On a car like this its nothing new or important, they tend to last quite a while.
wow at the end of the video the golden supra behind the titan supra. what is done to the body? it looks clean! please tell me if its a widebody or what? it just doesnt look stock but at the same time it does. please?! thank you :]
They aready have it bro and more to come. Ppl failed to realize that the "only" reason why the Bugatti Veyron is not faster than the SSC is because: 1) It has a electronic Limiter that helps to slow it down (Take that off and good bye aero) 2) It's a Luxury Hypercar (Hince over million) and that carries alot of weight (The aero is stripped of unnecessary weight) 3)The Bugatti company is not in competition like the aero is but in 2012 Bugatti GT will be capable with 1100-1400HP and 270 MPH.
@chilicheese835 She was driving. Her name is Jessica Barton, im just putting two and two toghether, cause her supra is this color, and her car has been around darrins shop alot.
I think where you hear the HKS bov is at 1:28 and i believe that its coming from the other gold supra that is riding alongside the black supra and the sick ass titan stickered supra
@mikeshin a titan supra with around 1100whp vs a evo, supra all day. Don't get me wrong I love evo's but against a supra like that I highly doubt it'll keep up
yes that did happen, but before that the supra had the lead in initial lanch but the torque was so great the car went vertical nearly flipped so he had to let the gas go to regain control and thats when the supra lost... so to be fair yes the camaro did win not because it was faster but due to some bad luck
@1995fordranger you can pick up darin's 8 sec supra for 50k i believe. But some of the lesser modded supras go for even more. I think 50k is an amazing deal and I'd buy it if i could lol
you got to admit, every time they shift, it sends a chill down your spine
I love the noise of the blow off valve and engine combined damn it makes me feel alive
Think of it like a rolling start versus a standing start. a turbo suffering from compressor surge is basically stopped at every shift, and has to spool all the way back up, where a car with a proper bov system has the advantage of already being partially spooled from the previous gear.
Its nice to see the drivability of such a car. Props guy !
@dahblackworm im not new to how turbos work. i understand that these cars are running BIG turbo setups, and high levels of boost. I just hear the surge sound in so many supras. I love the way the turbo sounds
Wow, this is like a perfect rendition of one of my dream's... driving to Winghouse in my Titan Supra lol.
Actually its not the BOV leaking and it doesn't give the supra its sound, it gets the sound from the way the motor is built. But that "chutter" sound is air being forced back into the turbo, the air tries to force the turbine backwards thus creating the sound known as "compressor surge"
My mouth waters when I hear those Supras spool then the BOV's let out air. WOW!!!
Slightly, yes. It causes the turbo to take longer to spool on shifts. At the end, it looks like the Titan is running a bit rich.
I love those BOV's

Titan knows how to tune, that's for sure.
@laminaytrap i understand how turbos work. im running 22psi on my srt4 and it doesnt make that surging sound. @Ncom1 No, it's not the car's open wastegate at all; It's called back pressure on the turbos.
i just love that in car turbo it sounds amazing were u running on high or low boost?
@justinker13 he said 'what is that Bov (blowoff valve), the sound that the car is making, is NOT from a blowoff valve, the sound comes from NOT having one, another (disputedly incorrect) term for it is 'dosing' or 'compressor surge'.. it could also be from having a small BoV, not big enough to vent ALL of the pressure, leaving some to be chopped up by the turbine.
@Jak3Mac True, supras have such a distinct compressor surge that I figured that was what he was talking about though.
I live in Winter Park FL and Titan MotorSports is like right down the street.
@georgiamelody Sure as hell sounds like compressor surge to me. Happens everytime driver takes foot off the gas. Pretty sure that is flutter caused by air going back through the compressor.

@usf213246 ? the "compressor surge" is unvented air going back into the turbo, and the chatter sound is actually the turbine blades 'cutting' the air.
the sound is compressor surge, and not a dump valve. if you have a turbo charged car then just take the vacuum pipe off your dump valve and then ul get compressor surge.
@brizzlefizzle no, it's called surge. Otherwise known as flutter. He's past the surge point on the compressor map. Not a big deal if you have bb turbo, but if a journal bearing thats the sound of hatred of thrust bearings
that turbo does sound pretty wicked
To everyone asking, It sounds like a dose, or compressor surge. I've heard many VL's in my day.
Focking Crazy , running with a 7 sec Supra on streets AWESOME !!
Sick Supras! I like the orange one with black whee wheels. Cant wait till i get mine :-)
Both cars sound to frakin awesome !! :O
7 Second car in full street legal trim. Awesome.
@badb0y1300 if they are going that cheap something is wrong with the title. you always gotta check that stuff. supras stock go for around 20k-35k but heavily modded ones go for around 50k-60k, even though the builder of that modded car put around 80k in that 20k car.

Wish I seen this bad ass car on the streets, fucking sick!!!
Can't wait to see you guys in TX in a couple weeks..
I know it a manual but you actually can drop a gear in automatic. You pull the gear shift down to 3 or 2
I'm pretty sure they had the 91mm turbo on back then. Even if it was the 88mm which i doubt it was you're still looking at around 1200 - 1450ish
those cars can make everyday living fucking epic
Turbo surge doesn't exactly hinder performance its mainly going to lessen the life of the turbo. On a car like this its nothing new or important, they tend to last quite a while.
i love the turbo sound of the supra lol
@07becstar Meteorite Silver supra is Jessica Barton, Copper Supra is Wes, Drag Copper Supra is driven by Darin.
wow at the end of the video the golden supra behind the titan supra. what is done to the body? it looks clean! please tell me if its a widebody or what? it just doesnt look stock but at the same time it does. please?! thank you :]
muito bom..barulho inconfundivel !!!
brasil precisa disso nas ruass!!!!
holy shit that car sounded amazing
any turbo setup on a gasolene engine needs a bov, period. otherwise you get compressor surge which greatly reduces the life of the turbo.
Race car is more like 1500 - 1700ish. The other copper one is like 1000ish and the camera car at that point was around 850 or so IIRC.
Supra.. the sound of the BOV says it all
that orange supra sounds badass at the end nice BOV by the way wat brand is it?
What kind of BOV is that in the black Supra that the video man was recording from .? It sounds awesome . :DD Thanks. .
its t88 turbo, and its the wastegate that sounds amazing.

@usf213246 its not the bov its the compressed air going back out the turbo
@chilicheese835
She was driving. Her name is Jessica Barton, im just putting two and two toghether, cause her supra is this color, and her car has been around darrins shop alot.
straight4cyl* it is not the blow off valve it is compressor stall. it is not good for the turbo
Best sounding video ever.
I luv Dat when shiftin it's either the turbo or the blow-off valves? or sumthin
i couldn't have a car that sounded like that. i would cream myself every time i got in.
This is sick! Supra is damn nice!!!!
I like the fact that he kept the chute on lmao
now put this through a 5.1 sound system...
EARGASM!
@Vert344 I agree. It's just a bunch of vicious bench racing on youtube. On the road, the real racers help each other out.
When you see a Supra with a parachute on the back you know.... XD
I think where you hear the HKS bov is at 1:28 and i believe that its coming from the other gold supra that is riding alongside the black supra and the sick ass titan stickered supra
sounds like a spaceship when he shifts
@MrSirekOne it's not a bov, that's what causes the flutter sound... not having one...
@MadDwarfProductions Yeah...for a 20 minute quartermile Supra MKIII, lol. MKIV cost way more than that.
@mikeshin a titan supra with around 1100whp vs a evo, supra all day. Don't get me wrong I love evo's but against a supra like that I highly doubt it'll keep up
is this road legal or were u just having fun?
Geezz! Are those things even street legal?! What a way to get pulled over...
yes that did happen, but before that the supra had the lead in initial lanch but the torque was so great the car went vertical nearly flipped so he had to let the gas go to regain control and thats when the supra lost... so to be fair yes the camaro did win not because it was faster but due to some bad luck
yo hey, cam's riding a 2JZ too. cool 2Jz gang
thats just the HKS BOV youre hearing, kinda hard to tell what turbo it is without looking at it.
in california you would have lost that damn sexy car, I love the titan supra!!! i wantt a 3.4 kit please... =)
@athrindo it'll be another titan supra, just not asfast lol, still probably have upwards of 700bhp
@surlograsp is a bov. just for a big turbo thats why the difference
Having seen the car in person, and having asked the owner.
GReddy Type S.
Thank you.
@1995fordranger you can pick up darin's 8 sec supra for 50k i believe. But some of the lesser modded supras go for even more. I think 50k is an amazing deal and I'd buy it if i could lol
if i saw that supra with a paracute or let alone heard that beast of a car id honestly shit my pants
@RB20DEVIL i don't think at all. i don't know any bov that sounds like that. a bov has a stronger air.outlet.sound
@Jak3Mac No, compressor surge.
@chunnkygoat
That's cause it IS a spaceship - only missing a pair of wings of course =]
nope that 7sec supra has a bov custom built by tms. an it makes that sound too.
this is the only car i want in life, and for a tech question, what makes the fucking awesome sound when the one guy filming shifts
i always wonder this, do they have a full exaust or just like caught off i the middle?
i would fuck with it just to laugh my ass off at how fast it is
When he shifts the turbo sounds like zoidberg :P
around and about in a drag car. how awesome can you be?
@surlograsp im not sure what brand it is but its deffinatly bov
mamacita! some damn supras up in texas
where there 3 supras? all those sound really nice. supras always sound nice.
@RB20DEVIL i wanted to know the sound if she stops throttling. bov? compressor surge? open wastegate?
damn man tht's some badass shit i been lookin for a supra i havent found one i can afford yet :(
jessica barton...one of the very few woman that can drive a fast car let alone drive...
open your eyes and read whats already been said. It DOES have an effect on performance, but no effect on overall power, just spool time.
@j43w0n Do you mean it shrinking, or it doesn't play a vid off the bat?
i hate imports...but holy shit that car is nuts. much respect.
Ehh not really liking the whole Supra as a dragster thing, but I can respect it's power.
When you see a supra with drag radials and a shoot on the back pull over and let them pass lol
@mattmatt115 It must be a lot of fuel burned as too rich air-fuel mixture then,
