Thank you for this video! I could have used this when I got a puppy and was trying to introduce her to a 12 year old doggie. I plan to get another dog, so will definitely use this tactic.
I glad you liked it! We love this method because it is so easy and gives you a chance to see potential issues without a chance of anyone getting hurt. Enjoy your new dog!
I recently brought home a 9 week puppy, mixed breed lab. And have an almost 11 yr old dog at home. My older dog has growled at her a few times and but other times has not. He seems to growl when she gets super hyper. I have a baby gate up in my room and that’s where she stays in my room. I’ll have my door open with the gate up and my older dog will come up to the gate(this is sometimes where he won’t and will growl) she is becoming my emotional support dog and is going through trainings to do that so she is really needed and we need them to be okay with each other. Even with his growling at her is it still possible for them to get along 🙏
I’m no expert but my fiancé is, it could be just a correction if it’s when the puppy is acting crazy. Don’t take my word though as I’m a plumber not a trainer 😂.
It is hard to say without hearing and seeing more. A little bit of growling could be ok and could just be the adult dog saying "don't jump on me and bite me right now". Do they have any interactions where the adult dog seems to like the puppy?
@@SuburbanK9DogTraining he has come up to the gate with tail wagging and ears upright and sniffing. We went on a walk together with the puppy and him. He was seeming happy when he saw her coming to join us. But on the walk he seemed to not want much to do with her as she was barking a little bit on the walk so i think maybe he was just annoyed with that😭 but no growling on the walk or anything! His growl is very subtle and it’s no teeth baring and biting kind of growl
@@joew8013 that is honestly what I am thinking is it’s more correction rather than aggression. I just really need them to be civil as she’s going to be my emotional support for ptsd and anxiety 😭 she won’t be in the house forever as I do plan on moving out in a year or two 😭
If he is generally a friendly dog then it sounds like things are probably going ok and the growling is most likely just telling the puppy to chill out. If the older dog has any resource guarding issues it could quickly become a bigger issue though. My advice is to be very careful letting a dog "correct" another dog. Sometimes this goes well but often it does not. I would watch all interactions carefully and show the older dog that you are there to stop the puppy when it gets too wild.
So helpful. I’m getting a golden retriever puppy in September and am going to use these methods to introduce him to my cockapoo. The cockapoo is pretty anxious at first with other dogs but usually adapts fast as she was like this when we bought our cat home. Thanks for this video ❤
We just got a 6 month old Bassett hound and currently have a 3 year old Bassett hound. All our older one does is bark non stop at her. I’m praying she gets better with new pup
Do you know why she is barking? It could be distrust, but it could also just be excitement. One of the best things you can do is go for a long walk together and work on making them heel or walk calmly. This is to calm them down and help build trust if that is an issue. If you like podcasts I would definitely suggest listening to our episode on this topic. The show is Balanced Dog Training with Suburban K9 and is on Spotify and Apple for free.
Hi, Loved the video. I have a 2 year male GSD who is reactive. And I just got a female GSD pup. It’s been a day so far - and I have introduced them with the pup being inside the cage and older one being outside. Like your video, they have been sniffing each other with the newer pup standing up and growling little bit. To my surprise my older one hasn’t barked or reacted which I am taking as a great positive start. Now my question is how do I go about introducing them without the cage. I’d really appreciate any guidance on this.
The next step I would do is going for long walks together. This allows them to spend time close to each other without anyone feeling overwhelmed. Once they are nice and calm from a long walk I would do a quick smelling intro somewhere away from the home. If you are worried about your reactive dog lashing out check out this video. It shows how we do intros with reactive dogs once we have stopped the lunging/barking at a new dog. th-cam.com/video/zKAobBf9Qyk/w-d-xo.html
Great video. I'm giving my 6 months old American Bully to my sister who has a cane Corso and bulldog mixed. The firs two meetings the puppy kept barking and the Corso was acting very aggressive. How can we get them to settle down so they can finally live together?

During introduction phase, why did my existing dog (8 year old, mongrel) kept trying to nose boop the new adopted puppy (8 week old, mix shih tzu & poodle)? The puppy did bark quite abit while sniffing and tailing my older dog. The behaviour my older dog shows was heavy panting, drooling, sniffing, nose booping (he wasn't tense, no growling/barking). Is it reasonable to separate my dog from the puppy whenever he wanted to boop the pup?
How long have you had the puppy? Based upon the drooling and heavy panting it sounds like your older dog was fairly stressed. Separation for safety at this point makes a lot of sense. I would use the cage method like we show in this video and practice it a few times per day. We recently did a podcast episode covering this topic that will help you a lot. @@SuburbanK9DogTraining The puppy was adopted 1 week ago and this was the 1st introducing between them both. I'll continue with your cage method as i too believe giving the older dog some space/boundary will do more good.
My 7 year old dog is a rotwilder and he hates other dogs and will atack a lot and we recently bought a 7 week old puppy and the older dog rosco will bark and growl but so far had not hurt the puppy i dont know what to do
I would start by using the cage method and going for walks together. This is the easiest way to build trust between them. There are a lot of dogs that don’t like other dogs, but learn to love the new puppy in the home.
My 1 year old jack russel boy dog is being introduced to my new mini dachshund girl puppy. He stands up really straight around her and his hair goes up but nothing happens, i can see he also tries to play with her but she is very timid and gentle as a puppy goes. Is the hair standing up over excitement in this case or should i be worried? He is a very hyper friendly with everyone dog, he is not great on leash but i am going to start walking them especially him in the yard and her in someones arms.he does the same stance the older dog does at minute 7.51
The hair going up isn't necessarily a problem. It is often showing that the dog is excited/stimulated. If he is trying to play with her it doesn't sound like the body langue is an issue at all.
@SuburbanK9DogTraining thanks for getting back to me. He is a hyper dog for example never slept as a puppy and he often gets corrected by older dogs for too much play and hyper excitement on meeting them so it's likely the hyper attitude
@@anitasheehy3928 I hope the walking exercises are going well! Most dogs quickly accept a new dog into the home (the first day is definitely the most dangerous). Once your older guy accepts the pup the most likely issue would be guarding resources (bones, food, toys, bed etc.). Feel free to reach out with any questions!
We just got a 6 month old mini doodle 5 days ago. We currently have two 6 year old dogs a bit bigger than the mini doodle. Both my old dogs growl when the puppy tries to play and the older dogs seem anxious at times. But they also sniff each others butts and have all slept on the same bed together for bits of time. One of my older dogs won’t share toys well. Will all of this cool down over time? We are doing supervised interactions and using a crate for the new dog to sleep in over night and to spend some time in during the day. Any reassurance or advice would be greatly appreciated!
It sounds like most of the growling is distrust and that almost always goes away. I would probably be more worried about the resource guarding with the toys. Does the dog that guards the toy from the puppy also guard it from the other older dog?
Dogs will definitely treat different dogs differently. It is common for a dog to guard a resource from a new dog or a dog that seems weak, but not guard it from a dog that seems stronger or braver than them. It is a good sign that your dog is only guarding it from the puppy. If he was really set in his ways and very aggressive he would probably guard it from any dog. I would probably keep the most high value toys up for a week or so when the dogs are together. There is a good chance that once he accepts the new dog as part of the pack that the guarding goes away since he doesn't guard from your other dog. If he does guard anything that is on the ground it is crucial that you make it clear that it is not ok. He will need some sort of consequence to show him it's an issue. If he is fairly submissive to you, a sharp "no" might be sufficient. I think you are going to make progress fairly quickly from what I am hearing so far!
I’m introducing a labradoodle puppy to our 4 year old, high energy sheppadoodle dog. Our sheppadoodle barks and jumps around when he’s excited and after a few minutes, he calms down. Would that traumatize our puppy?
It really just depends on the puppy’s temperament. Another good option would be to go for a walk with your older dog while another family member carries the puppy. This will allow some of the excitement to wear off and allow a little more trust to be built before they say hi. We just did a podcast episode on this topic if you are interested. It is on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Hi i have 2 Belgium malinois. My older one is 18 months girl just bought a new one that is 12 weeks old boy . Girl is sweet and always needs attention. The girl smells the boy and licking of his ears him and then out of no were she nibs his ear . Please advise.
I have a 5 year old yoke and just got two 18 week old Cavachon puppies (I could separate them). Grant the terrier is growling at the puppies when they are crated, but some times just sniffs at them. I love all my fur babies and I really want them to get along. It’s only been 7 days and I have been keeping Grant and the puppies separated. Any additional advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your video!
Hi Diane! Does Grant enjoy playing with other dogs? If he likes other dogs he may just be trying to tell the pups he doesn't like their nonsense at that point in time (jumping, barking etc.). Is there a chance he is guarding something from them? His bone, toys, food or bed? This can often lead to growling that seems unpredictable. One of the best things you can do is take them for a walk together (even a short one) and then let them say hi to each other when they are calm and away from the house. These intros are almost always easier. We recently posted a video on when you should let your older dog correct or stop a puppy and when you should not. Here it is: th-cam.com/video/tKI9EI-lhIY/w-d-xo.html Let us know what other questions come up after reading this reply. We have a 5yr old dog and we lost our 15.5yr old dog 5weeks ago. We decided to bring a new puppy home yesterday (9wks old) and it’s not going well. 5yr old growling and snapping which is weird because she does well with most dogs. Not sure what to do. We’ve been keeping them separated either by gates between rooms or separating them by floors. Still not going well. Take them for a walk. They do ok then.

I have a big pit bull who’s also my service dog and he is super sweet but he is big and powerful. I just got my daughter a 10 week old puppy and I’m having trouble communicating to my dog to be gentle. He has no signs of aggression toward the puppy. No raised hackles, his tail is wagging and up but he is just super curious. He’s just super strong. Anyone’s help would be appreciated.
We generally recommend taking things slow to keep everyone safe and comfortable. One of the best things you can do is go for lots of walks together. This helps get rid of any overexcitement or trust issues. If you go for a few walks together each day you will make progress really quickly.
@@SuburbanK9DogTraining thanks for the help. We did go on a couple walks today with my dog and my daughter’s puppy and it seemed to help a lot. I finally got my dog to understand that she’s is fragile and he’s been a lot more gentle today than he was yesterday so that’s a step in the right direction. Everyone (the dogs) seem to be catching on with what’s going on and there’s just a new dog in the pack. We have one older smaller dog and she’s 13 years old. @SuburbanK9DogTraining the puppy is 4 months old, and she's a mixed breed. I'm quite sure she's a stafforshire terrier mix. The older dog is a bulldog but isn't really responding to the aggression. The puppy seems to pretty good with just being around or in the presence of the bulldog, but once the interaction between the 2 occurs and they're more focused on each other she wants to snap and growl.
You can try letting them interact through a fence or wire crate to see how they do. If the puppies issues are motivated by fear sometimes the issue will be resolved through a couple of interactions. If it isn’t getting better you can send us a quick video and we can give some more insight after seeing it.
I have 6yo female gsd & 10 week corgi. My gsd plays but it's very rough play so I'm limiting face to face free time. I tell her "gentle" but she hasn't picked up on it yet. Just starting day 4. I've had several dogs from puppy in my life but new to the 2 dogs at same time thing. Help, please. Getting play pen today so hoping thar will take some of the puppy novelty away if they can be "together " more thru the pen panels.
Hi Carissa! Does your GSD know the place command? If not, teaching place is fairly easy and can be used to help her chill out when needed. I have two boston terriers. A male who is about a year and 7 months and a female who is about 12 weeks. We just got her this weekend. She is very hyper and puppy like but my male is like heck no. He seems a bit nervous of her. He hasnt barked at her or anything but still...
One of the best things you can do is take them for some walks together. This will calm down a lot of the excitement and give them time to build trust with each other. At the end of the walk they will both be a lot calmer and you can do an intro at that point.
Hey i have 3 pit bull mixed dogs (mom dad and daughter) n i brung home a 2 month old husky puppy n its been with us now for about 2 weeks n now my girl dog (the mother) is very protective of this puppy shes fighting with the other dogs not letting them play with the puppy or simply just being rude to the other dogs when it comes to the puppy it was a huge fight between the mother and father over the puppy im really not sure what to do n why is my dog thinking this puppy is the dog she birth being over protective ?
@@SuburbanK9DogTraining they have been in fights b4 buts its mostly like a bark off when they both see each other eating out of their food bowls I'm guessing they don't like that or they're being territorial too their food so I feed them in different rooms but since the puppy they've been aggressive around each other
@@Therealmaxnorris Sorry for the late response. For some reason I didn't get notified of your response! Resource guarding can apply to anything from food, toys, bones, beds or even other dogs. It sounds like your dog is guarding/claiming the puppy just like the adult dogs do to each other with their food. I would practice a lot of leash training and make sure that your dogs can heel perfectly even around distractions. Then I would practice heeling the female dog while another dog plays with the puppy. This will take work but it will help her accept the other dogs playing with the pup. I hope this makes sense and please reach out with questions!
I also have a 2 year old Shih Tzu and recently introduced a 2 month old shih tzu to him. Its nearly 4 weeks but my older dog seems scared of the puppy. He always run away and stay out of reach from the puppy. The puppy is very energetic and runs after my old dog when they are on the floor together. Please help advise how we can make them play and like each other 😢
I would consider having the pup drag a leash around the house when it is around your older dog. Then when the puppy chases him you can step on the leash and stop him. Your older dog will gain confidence from seeing you stop the pup each time. You can also set up sessions where you put the puppy in the cage and encourage the older one to smell him from outside of it. This is an easy non-threatening way for the older dog to get some sniffs in.
Today my old dog (9yrs old) met the new puppy (8weeks old) for the first time. My old is pretty good with other dogs but he sniffs obsessively and some dogs don’t like this. The pup didn’t seem to mind to much and put the old dog in his place by barking at him but my older dog just carried on sniffing him for the whole 4hrs they were together. I toke my older dog for a 15min walk to separate them for a bit but as soon as I toke him back in he’s sniffing like mad again. What can i do to help this situation?
If you can walk them together that would be a good start. It will help your older dog be around the puppy without sniffing the whole time. You could also keep your older dog on leash in the house for a few hours and let the puppy come up to him and walk away as he chooses. There is a decent chance that the issue resolves itself over the next few days as the novelty of the puppy wears off, but I would still work on fixing it in case there are other problems lurking that you haven't seen yet. What breeds are the two dogs?
We just brought home a 7 week old pup, my 2yr old German shepherd who I thought would be so loving, reacted very aggressive and lunged to bite/attack the puppy. We had to separate immediately. Please advise 🙏
Sorry to hear that! Does your GSD heel well on leash? If so, I would immediately go for a long walk with the puppy. If the puppy gets too tired just pick him up and carry him whenever needed. The goal is to remove the excitement and also build trust. If your GSD doesn't heel well I linked to a video to show you how to make progress quickly. You can fix 75% of leash pulling in the first hour or so of practice. Reach out with any questions!
It is fairly common for older dogs to not enjoy being around new puppies. The puppies often annoy the older dogs and often the adults don't really know how to interact with the pup. I would definitely take the introductions slow and make sure you are the one who stops the puppy when it gets carried away (not the adult dogs). It is crucial that the puppy learns boundaries but that the older dogs don't feel like they should be the ones correcting the puppy. A lot of fights start because of that.
We have 4 Australian shepherds. 2 mini boys and 2 full size girls. My friend's adult daughter gave up her 8 month old husky girl puppy and my friend asked us to take her. The pup isn't spayed. We brought her home last night. My friends daughter kept her in a crate constantly or on a 6ft rope in the backyard!!!!!! It was 91 degrees here yesterday!!! No problem with my 2 girl's when we introduced them. We haven't introduced the boys yet. I am VERY concerned about one of my male minis. VERY concerned. He is the leader of the pack. Hes the boss man and the other 3 dogs know that and respect him. I dont have a large crate like that. I do have gates up in my home that stay open and closed depending on whats going on. My 9 year old malel mini aussie I'm worried about can be very aggressive towards dogs he dosent know. This isnt going to be easy no matter what. Eventually he will get used to her but when we brought one of our female aussie puppies home he would pin her to ground by her neck with teeth bared so she would submit. He will not bite, but its very scary to watch. Hes used to her now. He dosent do that anymore. He also has medical issues. Cushings disease, bad b-12 deficiency, had 2 surgeries. One for luxating patella and he broke his left front arm and has a rod with pins implanted. Hes also very protective of me. He is a very sweet loving boy. He is calm except with new people and dogs he dosent know. You see a whole different dog until he gets used to them. He dosent like it when another dog is really hyper around him. We gave her to my sons friend who lives with us. He has severe diabetes and has a pump implanted in his body for it. We would like to train her to alert him of low blood sugar. Wish me luck with the introduction of my boy to her!!
Hi Anita! I hope things are going well! Sorry for the delay on responding, it has been a hectic week around here! If you haven't started the intros yet, one of the best things you can do is go for long walks together. Some people will go for three or four walks a day for up to a week to help the dogs start to feel like they are part of the same pack. This builds trust and also eliminates a lot of excitement during the first meeting which can lead to a lot of fights.
My dog it's super sweet and has been going to dog parks since she was a puppy. She's 2 years old now and my brother brought his puppy to my house and my dog wants to attack the puppy. That's a very unusual behavior for her. What can I do?
It sounds too good to be true, but go for long walks together. This helps build trust and reduce excitement. Those are the two things that cause the most fights. The third is guarding a resource. Walk for as long as you need to and then let them meet each other away from the house. If that goes well do some play sessions on neutral ground. After a few play sessions try again at the home but play close attention because your dog may guard her bed, her bowl, her toys etc. I hope this helps!!!
I just got a husky pup and im using this technique to warm them up to each other. Its not that i dont trust my shepherd she is just jealous and has snapped at the cage about twice now and made the puppy do the same thing. I immediately stopped it just incase
Another great technique is going for long leash walks. This helps build trust and eliminate excitement which will make the intro easier. It also helps to do the intro away from the house. A lot of older dogs are more accepting of new puppies away from their home.
My 2 year old Shih Tzu met her new 2 month old Shih Tzu as well. My older dog started getting scared and drooling badly. Please help, I don't know what to do. I want them to be playful and know each other but I'm scared and confused
Sorry to hear you are dealing with that! Drooling is a stress response and will go away in time if you help your older dog cope. I would start by finding some things they can do "together" that allow your older dog to feel comfortable. One of the best options is to go for long walks together. Having two handlers is ideal here. The goal is that they spend time close together but are also busy with other things so that your older dog doesn't need to focus on the pup so much. This will build a lot of trust. Another option is to put the puppies crate in the middle of the room and when it is nap time you can put up the pup and play with your older dog in the room. Through time your older dog will naturally get curious and go sniff the crate. Please let us know what questions come up after you get started!
I have a 12 week old puppy and my 13 year old Jack Russell is not a fan. She's growls, shows teeth and lunges at the puppy. How can I get the Jack Russell to settle down? It's like this 95% of the time.
Going for long walks together is one of the best options. Just make sure you don't over walk the pup. A 12 week old dog can't walk too long especially if it is a larger breed. We have a full length podcast video on this topic that would really help you out. Our show is called "Balanced Dog Training With Suburban K9" and is on Apple and Spotify for free. I hope this helps!
A chihuahua and pitbull that got along since the first time they met. They were introduced to one another before I brought the chihuahua puppy home. Everything was going well. My older dog did have to correct intrusive behavior occasionally, but nothing harsh. One night everything changed and my pitbull attacked the puppy. I didn’t know what happened. People kept telling me “Pitbulls are unpredictable and can turn on you in seconds.” I didn’t want to believe it, but I began to think it was true. I don’t know if I’m making sense, but… what went wrong?
Honestly … it’s common sense to not have a little harmless dog around a big mean dog that can clearly kill it ….. Murphys law lady if it can happen it will happen 😑 you just made me mad
@@Icwhitesmiles I wasn’t being mean. Why the third degree? If you don’t like my comment you don’t have to reply to it, but I don’t appreciate your rudeness
Sorry to hear that happened to you. One of the most common reasons that fights happen "out of nowhere" is resource guarding. Often dogs will do well around each other and then one dog decides to guard a bone, toy or even the owner. This can change a situation from play to attack instantly.
I was gifted a 6 week old husky and my 10 year old dog doesn’t want the puppy near him. He growls every time the puppy gets near him. Or if my older dog walks around the puppy he starts to growl .
I would set up the cage introductions 3 or 4 times per day and alternate who is in the cage. This will work well if you give it enough time. Our newest podcast episode will go live on Tuesday and covers how to do dog intros with a lot of detail. It will be on Spotify and Apple Music. Let us know what questions you have!
What if the older dog growls during the crate intro? I’ve been doing a baby gate in between them but my 10-year old doesn’t seem interested in smelling/getting too close to puppy.
@@SuburbanK9DogTraining puppy is 4month old & its a poodle mix rescue. I figured maybe it’s a defensive mechanism from his previous owners ..? Also they said that the owner was breeding between siblings, could that be a genetic thing?
We sometimes see puppies of that age that are scared of dogs and will growl or bark to chase them away. We also see a lot of wild puppies that act aggressively but it is just out of control play. Which of those sounds the most like your dog? The reason I ask is that the training fix is pretty different.
I just brought home today a new girl puppy and my 6 year old yorkie keeps trying to jump her not in a playful way, a lot of slobber and isn’t giving her any space. Is there anything that I can do to fix this?
I would have the Yorkie drag a leash around the house and just pick it up and give a quick leash correction with a verbal "no" when she humps the puppy or is to pushy. How does your Yorkie do when walking on a leash?

If he is generally a friendly dog then it sounds like things are probably going ok and the growling is most likely just telling the puppy to chill out. If the older dog has any resource guarding issues it could quickly become a bigger issue though.
My advice is to be very careful letting a dog "correct" another dog. Sometimes this goes well but often it does not. I would watch all interactions carefully and show the older dog that you are there to stop the puppy when it gets too wild.

Hi,
Loved the video.

Here is a link to our Spotify. It is also on Apple Podcasts. open.spotify.com/show/0u4lIDhvmK17EBbp7VfXZ5
Awesome thanks 👍

@@SuburbanK9DogTraining no just the puppy. The one that guards the toys also is submissive to my other older dog. So it’s odd
@@SuburbanK9DogTraining thank you so much!! This is great advice and I really appreciate it
I’m introducing a labradoodle puppy to our 4 year old, high energy sheppadoodle dog.
Is she actually biting the puppy or just nipping and playing? Also, sometimes an older dog will try and correct a puppy like a mother would.
Here it is: th-cam.com/video/tKI9EI-lhIY/w-d-xo.html

She’s been kind of keeping my big dog in check when it comes to rough housing around the puppy. I appreciate the help. Fingers crossed! 🤞

My puppy growls and seems to want to attack in this situation. What should i do?
How old is your puppy? Also what breed is it?
Here is a video showing that process. th-cam.com/video/Xk4YI6AOPAw/w-d-xo.html

Sorry to hear what you are going through! Was this the first time the two older dogs fought or have they been in a fight before?
@@SuburbanK9DogTraining thank you! I will definitely try this approach!!
I dont know if my pack (smaller dogs mixed) is the problem or my puppy. None of them want to play with her, nips and bites and stiffness.
And my puppy is going to become a big dog. Lab X Pit
@SuburbanK9DogTraining thank you I will try it. I really want them to get a long since I will be dog sitting a lot.
@@SuburbanK9DogTrainingthank you i will try that too
My 2 year old Shih Tzu met her new 2 month old Shih Tzu as well.
@@Icwhitesmiles I asked a simple question. And “Mean” dog? Any dog can turn into a “mean” dog. Don’t just target pitbulls

I wouldn’t have the puppy on the leash.
