Forgot the Drain Plug ! Boat Ramp Swallows Grady White ! (Black Point Marina)

- Boat Sinks at Black Point because they forgot to put on the drain plug. This was litterally the 2nd day the owner had the boat. High tide at Black Point Marina didnt help.

I remember when you lost the Verado. I was impressed by how you recovered it from the sea floor. This was very impressive. Kudos to the guys from Sea Tow. And what you and Danny did for that guy was awesome, you guys are rock stars. Thank 3for letting all see how they recover sunken boats, that was amazing. The transport driver knew better than to put a boat in the water without a plug.

@@antonioprado8068 well well, i would think that after a sale of a new boat like this, the seller/dealer would and should set up for it to be delivered to the NEW OWNER, and it may not be the owners fault, and its not that insurance company that is paying, but the DEALER and the TRANSPORT company that has insurance that would and should pay for it, I think........>>>> right Alfred Montanar, and everyone??? and if they try and not pay, it could very well be a lawsuit, i think! The entire transaction is not complete until new owner takes over the possession of the boat in still brand new condition, and when it sank, this did not happen!!! The dealer may have to take back this boat, and give him a new one, I for one would not settle for anything less then that! The new owner may not even own a trailer, he may have already paid for this place to store his boat, so new owner in fact may not even need to purchase a boat trailer!!!! the rack being talked about is part of the storage place there at that RAMP!
"PROPS" to Sea Tow!! Absolutely amazing that they were able to re-float a really wet Grady in less than an hour! The only thing more amazing than that was what Danny did! He had some really good experience with the Verado restoration, but he made it look almost TOO easy! Forget about college - send your kids to specialty mechanic school! Best decision Danny ever made. You and he made a great team. Glad he had you for the heavy lifting.....oh to be 6'5", 225, and ripped! No matter what, the insurance companies should be on the hook for twin 300's at the very least. And Sea Tow or Tow Boat US membership is the best $200+/- every boater will ever spend - even if they never need their services. Great video. Enough said.

Let me say this first of all for this guy to come out with two herniated discs is incredible--the pain from that type of back problem is only understood by those of us who have suffered from them. Secondly, he knows his business and does an excellent job in a timely manner, if not those engines could have had worse issues. Props to everybody involved, Alfred, SeaTow, and Danny--wish you all the best life has to offer! Some stand up people there rarely seen these days.

i had 2, the pain was unreal. i was near suicide when, in desperation, i went to a Chinese acupuncturist. it took time, but she fixed it.
25 years ago we pulled up to Tabor lake just out of Prince George BC Canada. We saw fish jumping across the lake. Put the boat in the water, Parked the motor home and unloaded the KLR650 where I went into town to get worms. Come back to the wife saying you sunk your boat. 2 guys came over and have it on their trailer. It was sitting on the bottom. Once all the water was out we re-floated it back in the lake. Wife says why aren't you mad. I says I will be out fishing in under an hour. I pulled the plugs out. Turn it over a few times. Poured a bit of oil in the cylinders. Turned over a few revs. Repeated and then dried the plugs. Then I fired it up and went fishing. It was an 85hp 2 stroke. Wife was shocked when I came back with 3 fish. Camp host came by to congratulate. That would be a different outcome with 4 stroke though. I never forgot a plug after that.

I know on newer Jet skis even if you forget to have drain plugs installed your vessel will not fill with water they put 1 way check valves on the drain holes. They should do that on boats

Kudos to the Humanitarian of the Year, Alfred Montaner. Getting Danny out to service those engines was the best thing for those Yamaha's. Displacing that water before corrosion set in, saved Hours of service work.
SeaTow was as efficient a professional group any of us could hope for. Bad situation was prevented from being a huge disaster for the new owners.
They need to say Hi to the camera once she is sea worthy again.

It happened to me, and I was fortunate to notice before I left the ramp and was able to pull it back up on the trailer. Horrible feeling to step into your boat and feel the water ankle deep and watch it rise even more. Hope he doesnt have too much damage.
Any serious boat owner who says they’ve never forgotten the plug is not telling the truth. We’ve all done it. I did it with my first boat, a used 1969 tri hull, in 1976. Got it in quick. Then I spent 30 years as a boat rep. Had like 25 different demo boats over the years. Never forgot the plug again.
When I was a kid my dad had a older wooden boat that would leak but not to bad and to drain it he would take the plug out when we were moving and would put it back in before we stoped

That is one of the reason that Danny is my mechanic, not only a great and knowledges professional but also a good person, I personally highly recommend him.

One of my buddies is a rock star with trailering, launching and loading. One of those guys where you want to help but he's so good you're just getting in his way. He had a carabiner on the boat key that the plug went on whenever it was out of the boat. Made it hard to forget it...
Smart man. Like the key rack hanging right inside your front door at your house. Had to introduce that to my father in law that was always losing his keys. Best couple of bucks you can spend.
Hey Alfred, I see you occasionally have problems with glare later in the day. Get a polarizing filter for your camera; you can rotate the filter and it will cut most of the glare. It also allows you to see down into the water. You'll be amazed! Thank you for your entertaining (and instructional-via-negative-example) content!
This sort of thing happens all the time at marinas all around the world. The best thing you can do is create a checklist, get it laminated and keep it onboard. Run through it. Fuel, Oil, Batteries, Hydraulics, Prop Check, Life Jackets, Fresh Water, Drain Plug, Anchor, Anchor rope tied off and in good condition, Bumpers, Bumper Ropes, Cushions, Bilge Pump, Radio/Communication, GPS/Sonar, Radar, Cover/Top, etc... It takes all of a minute or two to do a double check. This type of thing can happen to anyone.

Great comment! Due to Sea tow, Alfred and Danny, hopefully nothing but a great anecdotal story in time. Could have been much worse but for great people like those. I know sea tow (and maybe Danny) got paid but they are people who are super contentious, care about their work and do it well. Extremely valuable to find these days. Alfred is just a gem, period. Alfred, you guys touched on the subject of insurance and that made me think of liability. To my way of seeing it, if that was a brand-new boat, then surely the boat-builders or the transport company were responsible to ensure the plug was in before the boat left the factory, and the cost of the recovery and refurbishment should be part of the after-sales services. If the new owner had not received appropriate new-owner training, then he was entitled to total replacement of new for old of everything that was damaged by the salt-water unless he had arranged for the transport himself. Alfred, you implied that you might be prepared to help restore the motors in the same way you did for the sunk Verado, but on this occasion, whilst you would be very generous, such outside assistance might render the guarantees and warrantees void unless you are authorized by the component manufacturers to do such work. Thanks as always for such interesting videos. ---- Obviously, I wrote this post before seeing the end of the video and I had not realized that you and Danny actually did help. I hope I did not offend you both?
Boat plugs are to drain the boat after every use. It’s responsibility of the boat user to ensure the plug are in and secured properly.
It’s one of those things that need to be done each and every time you launch a boat.
Some states require a boat in transport on a trailer to have the plugged pulled so the water can drain before it goes to a new body of water.
If it fact it was a brand new boat, and he had it delivered to a dock and put in the water to dock at his private slip or something. He should have been there when it was launched and went over everything to ensure it was good before accepting delivery.
And insurance company is going to look at it like it’s not the responsibility of a dealer or manufacture once delivery is accepted.
Just like buying a new car. You are “trusting” that it was built right, and when they go through the delivery process, they don’t sit there and show you every little feature it does, and what to check, and how to check tires and oil, and how to ensure the oil plug is tight. Before you drive off the lot, someone should go through it themselves and check with their own eyes and bring any issues up with the dealer before it’s taken off the lot.
Once it leaves the lot, it’s no longer their responsibility, you return an hour later because oil leaked out and the engine blew. You don’t get a new car, you get your new car fixed under warranty.
Simple fact is once it’s sold, anyone can do anything to it and blame the dealer or manufacture. Maybe they ensured they were there and tight. But someone can easily get it home, undo the plugs, or put it in the water, undo the plugs and let it sink to get insurance money or something else.
Unless something can be attributed to a manufacture DEFECT, there is absolutely no claim one can make on something they should have checked themselves.
That’s why when you buy something that has a manual, you are supposed to read it. It covers everything under the sun, including how to install the plugs. So first thing a dealer is going to ask, did you check the plugs like it says in the manual? It’s the first rule of boating before you put it in the water, check and double check the plugs. And check them regularly to make sure they are not rotten and in good working order. They are a 10.00-30.00 part that can cost tens of thousands of forgotten.
We used to have this old 14' fishing boat that's was a little leaky... we kept a bailing can handy... we used to pull the plug while under way on a plane to drain out the boat.

I feel the pain for whoever this boat belong to. I left the drain plub out of my boat only one time. Luckily I was only about 20 yards from the dock when I realized it. I guarantee you will never let it happen again!
as a boat owner, you sure do learn fast about drain plugs......LOL and also bulge pumps, i think. that person that dropped that boat into the water, and left that plug out, they be lucky of they dont get fired!

Thankfully I have a wife who spent 40 years at the ramp with me constantly saying "hey dummy did you put the drain plug in".
As expensive as those Grady Whites are, you would think the manufacturers would design a automatic plug system or maybe some kind of warning light on the dash that the plug is not installed.

I had a boat and loaned it to a friend, he tied it up from bow and one on starboard. It was at full high tide and as the tide went out the boat flipped over completely, Prop up!!! And we brought it to mech changed the oila nd cleaned spark plugs and it ran perfect for many years. This was in Costa Rica where the tide change is 10ft at times. So no big deal

What I am saying, however is you have to consolidate your brand. Those of us who really enjoy what you have created want to see you succeed. The sale of your branded products offers a great profit potential. I believe your brand is “The Chit Show.” So all naming should reference that. Stop using Luxury boat tenders or any other name. I have forgotten the plug before. Luckily didn’t leave the dock. Noticed something was wrong when we were loading gear at the slip. Jumped in the water and got the plug in. Bilge pump going full blast. The water was up to the starter on the inboard… but luckily it still fired up. Got it back on the trailer. Let it drain out in the parking lot. Spent the day on the lake with a good lesson learned… and a bit of a red face. Can happen to anyone. Try to put the plug in these days before I leave the drive way at home.
What's the reason for using the bags ? Why nit just put a plug in and pump the water out. Especially with the tide going out.

I would have plugged, pumped and waited for the next tide to float it back up instead of dragging it backwards with the bow on dry land. Oh wait, I have towboat insurance. Hope the electrical components aren't a neverending nightmare after the saltwater bath. Def feel awful for the owner, fingers crossed he got his bad luck out of the way and he'll have many years of trouble free boating ahead in his new to him Grady 🤞🏼
My next question, who put the boat in the water. I always kept my plug in the cup holder on the console so I’d see it when I started the engine. Realized once 15 miles out that I screwed up. Tied a life jacket to to anchor line & drove off to drain the hull. Able to get the plug back in. Saved the day. Remember Chit Happens. Thanks Alfred

Similar thing happened to my dad’s boat except the ENTIRE boat sunk. He sued the guy who did maintenance and forgot the plug.

Many things must be considered.
Did water get into the fuel tank? Will the fuel tank have to be drained, clean out flushed, and the sea water contaminated fuel properly disposed of?
Were the engine heads submerged?
Salt water has entered the electric wiring and terminal connections. I would want all of the wiring replaced because it definitely will become a problem later if not replaced now.
Ironically the ad before this video was advertising boat transport 😮😅

I did that once. It was a welded aluminum jet river boat, so its normal to have some water in it. Just pulled her back out, and told everyone at the ramp I was just flushing her out.
I’m wondering if there is really much damage to both engines. Port didn’t look like it went under and starboard didn’t go deep.

Definitely a bummer, but I bet that outboard Grady White was 3x as expensive as an inboard Albemarle with the same specs. Not a good company, imo. Glad they were able to recover it though.

Why didn't they borrow a trailer and winch the thing out with the drain plug out. Would have been a hell of a lot easier.

okay but why couldnt they put it on someone elses trailer like that similar size roller trailer that showed up for 2 minutes let it drain throw the pug in and relaunch it then let seatow tow it i bet anyone there would have been happy to take 100 bucks for 2 minutes of their time.

Alfred, you should ask Sea Tow or TowBoat US on the charges for this type of recovery…whether member or non member. I know once the company declares the operation a Salvage Operation… this is no longer directly covered as a member. Salvage operations are generally premium time and equipment charges… whether the pumps are run, whether air bags deployed, does he have to go under water to deploy something, how many recovery boats….this kind of dictates whether the operation is a salvage. Since this was at the dock, not sure if it was a salvage and recovery.
And on the subject of aliens ,we can't see them because they are on a different wave length than us ,or one we haven't found out about yet ,like how certain lighting effects what you see and feel , can't explain it all because I'm just a old country boy , I think your on the right path.. RHEC
