When did millions of tons of steel and concrete perched on a waterway or beach become more appealing or better in any way opposed to a boat floating on the water ? Even if it’s an older boat !
Because they own the property. You just sound jelly. What if a bunch of van livers pulled in the park next door to your house and decided to take up residence and act a fool?

As a native Floridian, I can safely say this has happened for over 30 years in Florida. The issue is that the top 0.05% of the money in South Florida does not want the "little people" to be able to benefit from access in any way. They believe that the area is theirs and theirs alone. They believe that they should be able to come and go with their $10,000,000.00+ yachts without having to seethe "Scraps"

I live in palm beach county and when you go over the bridge onto the island the police look for many reasons to pull you over. I don’t know how bad the rules are for boats but unless you’re driving a car that’s over 100k they will keep their eyes on you. There are some decent people there but many are a-holes.
@@oneamericanpatriot108 well I can hardly side with either of the groups the extremely rich or the extremely poor. I don't think it would be a good idea to have boat life like they have in Asia where everybody is in a boat they're bumping into each other constantly and every so often they make enough space to take a dump into the water. So if you let these people show up here just floating and don't make them follow any rules you're basically going to have sewage and nobody can enjoy it. You have people living under a bridge and they keep taking a dump where they live there's four or five hundred people dumping a loaf there every day and the next thing you know the system takes care of itself and they all get sick. same thing here if you want to point at the ridge and complain about the ridge of the rich rich rich rich rich rich rich. @@Wearyman Wonder what the owner looks like considering all the other gas stations that aren't part of a major franchise have a particular demographic.
I served on the Miami Beach Marine Authority for many years. It all boils down to the gentrification of the coast line. The rich landowners do not want their views of the water obstructed. Others are paranoid of strangers in boats being so close to their homes. Almost 100% of the shoreline from Hollywood, Florida, down to Key Largo is now off limits to anyone going onhore with a dinghy. Years ago, there were areas where you could dinghy ashore and go shopping, etc. That's all gone now.
As a boater, I hate to say it, but there are a very few people out there who ruin things for the rest of us. Not saying there aren't stuck ups in the rich neighborhoods and towns who think they own the world but there are some boats and people who shouldn't be out there because they are a danger to themselves and others.
I have a friend who used to be a "live aboard" off Coconut Grove. So it makes me see this issue in a nuanced way. It seems like it's harder and harder for people with limited means to get by. 😢
Absolutely. However there is a tradition of Mariners that goes back to the founding if Miami. It seems like the city will cut off its own foot with ANA'S Not everyone out here is doing harm. We just wish to live and sail free.
@@sailingEV888 right, you just want to hit a port along the way, take on food and fuel and be on your way. Unfortunately the live aboard in a decrepit boat is a minority of owners, but persistent enough right in the residents faces to change everyone's opinion of boat people that don't dock or trailer. One stolen 10 horse outboard can change a neutral to an opponent for life if the thief took off in a RIB
If you go to a place overseas where a lot of poor people go on boats you will find the waters surrounding those boats to be full of diseases. Then there's some pathetic slob like you that thinks making it illegal for people to live on a boat and s*** in the water all day is somehow making it hard for the poor to get by? It’s been that way since biblical times… life ain’t fair ..Nor is the world…it never will be fair…so tell em to go get a job…put some folding money in yer pocket and the world becomes nicer….
I live in St Augustine and I wouldn’t keep a boat anywhere outside a marina for any period of time if you want to keep your winches, electronics, rigging, etcetera. Unfortunately a significant number of meth head goons living on the hook in derelict immobile vessels (way worse since Covid) clearly have ruined it for the rest of the sailing community. Add to that dismasted boats sinking adjacent to the water way, with their rigging just below the waterline at high tide just waiting to sink someone. The county is not doing nearly enough about it. Someone is going to get seriously hurt. I’m all for visitors and travelers enjoying their rights to our waterways, but floating tent cities full of thieves and creating submerged unmarked hazards, and contaminating the river with black water and fuel indiscriminately has to end. The number of used syringes I’ve cleaned up on the beach used by a youth sailing program adjacent to one of the common anchorages is unacceptable evidence of what I’m talking about.
I disagree. Maybe those meth heads are just living with trauma in there lives and had to escape to sea.. (I have not seen a meth head ever) .. just men mis understood.. Living free away from tyranny. I don't get any meth head vibes from any of these Men. These people are traditional Mariners they are just trying to live with what they have free from the BS on the internet and cable news..
A few people ruining it for the rest that follow the rules even if they are unwritten. A free mooring ball maintained by the city isn’t and never was meant to be a permanent place to keep your boat. It’s for transient boaters to spend a week a month etc. it’s the honor system. Spend some time there and move on. I don’t care how nice your boat is or isn’t how rich you are or aren’t. It’s not permanent mooring. So now because of a few floating junkyards basically squatting on a free morning it’s going to ruin it for everyone else. Boats on a public mooring should absolutely be required to operate under their own power. Boats are expensive if you can’t maintain it and have permanent storage don’t own it.
The derelict boats are the problem and with people living on them the problem gets worse . Usually without holding tanks they pump their sewage straight into the bay . The real sailors who maintain their boats properly and are respectful of the ocean end up with fewer and fewer places to anchor . Free anchorages will soon become a thing of the past .
@@claudehopper9813 where did these derelict boats come from didn't somebody with a bunch of money dump them? Abandon them on the environment and now somebody hacks one up into something that floats and everybody thinks he's the problem? If people who had enough money for a boat had to pay a pre disposal fee to get rid of that boat you wouldn't have the derelict boats. As it is these people Rich enough to afford a boat are too poor to pay to dispose of it they dumped it somewhere and if a homeless person doesn't take it it's probably a worse thing on the environment then if he does.
Derelict boats becoming floating RV parks is ruining it for responsible cruising boats. Easiest solution is to limit a particular anchorage to 14 days before requiring more than 5 miles away. These derelict boats are environmental hazards and safety hazards to responsible, seaworthy vessels nearby.
You should definitely call whatever state agency is in charge of gasoline weights and measuring. Kind of an ironic turn having to utilize a state agency to right a wrong.
I had a similar thing happen years ago when my Chevy Metro with a 7.8 gallon tank suddenly took over 10 gallons to fill up. I called and reported the station and they eventually got closed after several large fines for repeatedly doing the same thing. In my state (Washington), and other I am sure, they actually have unmarked cars with dummy measuring tanks that they use to check the rate at gas stations. The stations don't even know they are being checked. Still it is an understaffed part of the state government and they do depend on tips to know who they should be checking.
Yep there's a sticker on that pump with the date that it was checked (calibrated) and stickered/dated as such. Phone number* is on the sticker. If sticker is GONE, go to ANY other gas/fuel pump to get the phone nunber. If the sticker is missing, that's their first violation. REPORT THEM. ----- *It's actually called "weights & measures" so good call, really good call!
San Diego California got out of control with junk unseaworthy boats as well. The port kicked everyone out and installed moorings that they charge by the month for. The boats need to get a safety inspection by the Coast Guard before you are allowed to lease them. They also require a yearly inspection.
@@boristheamerican2938Republicans become down with the regulation as soon as the riff raff shows up. Why do you think Florida cities don't look like California cities with tranq zombies everywhere?
@@wahid-lg1kk Here in So Cal we have 24 hour temp moorings, or slips, for that exact purpose. We also have several places where you can anchor near facilities and shop at the fuel stations, or the Chandelery, and food mkt. I'm surprised that you didn't immediately call the state regulators when your pump delivered less than 15 gallons, it seems off by about 5%. You take pictures of the pump and your containers and send them too. Violations cost them money. And force them to repair their pumps.
Question: What is the capacity of your yellow diesel cans? When I first got mine, I bumped into the same issue. Puzzled, I read the side of the cans: Capacity - 6 US Gallons. Red gasoline cans are 5 US Gals.
I purchased these cans from home depot in Vero Beach. 100% new cans 5 gallons. Machine said 14.7 it pumped maybe 12 gallons. It's odd. Some one needs to go fill up and measure..
Here in Alberta, we are only allowed to camp for free on Crown land up to 14 days after that you must relocate and you’re good again for another 14 days. It’s no big deal and it makes sense.
Yeah I think 45 days is too much for many areas. We want to keep it as free as possible but there is a hippie boat movement that youtube kinda got started. Its the source of a lot of the problems. People with just enough money to get a barely floating boat, and not enough money to fix it. People with not enough money to take care of themselves, can't afford a mooring ball much less a marina. Not saying you need either but if you can't move your boat onto the dry, into a slip, or fire up the motor reliably to leave then when we get a hurricane those boats end up on the bottom, in the mangroves, on the rocks, crashed up against bridges, ect. And those people learn it cost more to retrieve the boats than the boat is worth, or more than they have and leave them right where they are. They become an environmental hazard, navigation hazard, and are even uglier to look at than when they were floating. The taxpayer pays to remove them. The way Florida law works with derelict vessels there is little incentive to try to clean up your mess and some boats that can possibly be rescued by people with means can't because unless the owner signs it to you there is no salvage law that will allow you to legally take possession. I have seen very nice, easily salvageable sailing and power yachts left to rot when someone like me would have definitely saved them. One close by me has probably a few thousand dollars of scrap metal on the deck alone.
This is an issue that was approached some years ago well before Desantis was governor. (just to give a time perspective) Its not new This issue was that there are (or were) THOUSANDS maybe tens of thousands of boats essentially abandoned on the various waterways all around Florida. Some had people living on them defecating into the water, washing clothes in the water. walking around naked playing loud music etc. People basically living in a tent a mere few feet from your home.(not a mansion just a normal house) If you want to live like that go to California etc where they not only support that lifestyle they embrace it! These boats wee not sailing or traveling it is a tenement on the water feet from your home. The bigger issue is hundreds boats that were simply rotting away, their owners died, or simply abandoned them. Repairs to make them "seaworthy' again far exceeded the value of boat when it was new much less in its current state. This is the heart of the problem. Envy is not the issue. Tax money is not the issue the "muh freedom" derp is not the issue. So the solution will be ( unfortunately) Paid moorings and short terms on those moorings. So the boats don't pile up, get abandoned and and rot away becoming someone elses problem. If you are going to be away for an extended time. Haul the boat and put it on the hard. ( its better for the boat any way.)
In the water silly goose, what do you think, does the garbage fairy come around and just pick it up. Bottom line is for every decent responsible boater there are 50 scum bags who life like pigs and do not car what damage they cause to the earth.
Most of the have dinghies and go to shore. The new laws make it so they have to go further out to where they will HAVE to dump all this stuff into the water.
It's called pumpouts, throw the trash in a dinghy and take it to the nearest trash bin, and the crabs eat the scraps. And Stakeholders don't own the water, the State does. Period.
I live in South Florida, and the problem got really bad after Covid. It seems to have gotten worse with the derelict boats and the junk boats everywhere. Then when people decide they’re gonna abandon them, they pull the decals and the Vin number off so it can’t be traced back to them. They abandoned them they sink and the state has to pay to get them out and it seems like a lot of riffraff around Miami and Coconut Grove on those boats, that’s why people don’t want them around

Thanks for this Video I have lived abroad and cruised tens of thousands of miles and have all but given up on the United States. And yes, I am a US citizen. The only boater friendly areas left in the US are the greater Chesapeake Bay Area and the Carolina’s, particularly NC is very boater friendly. Lots of anchoring and affordable docks. Some free. Places like Oriental, Elizabeth City, Original or little Washington all have temporary FREE docks. Maine can be ok too. That about takes care of the east coast. GA now has rediculous anchor Regs. They use to be good. Not much left. Go to the Bahamas and better yet the Eastern Caribbean. I’ve written Fl off a good while ago. Especially south. The west coast is pretty bad to but mainly due to a lack of space and protected harbors. The San Juan Islands N of Washington can be nice too. And that’s about it. The very best cruising on the west coast is Mexico. Particularly the Sea of Cortez. I have cruised much of the world and the Sea of Cortez is very high on the list as best places. The US is doing its best to regulate cruisers out of the picture. SAD. I am originally from FT Lauderdale. Bad changes. Now I am NOT in favor of “flop aboards”. Derelicts on derelict vessels. This has been the biggest, but not only cause of the problem.
The real issue is when storms come in and the boats break off there mooring and hit boats in the marina/clubs/homes and the owners have no insurance or funds to repair damage caused by their property. I am a member at a club where your video started and this happen to me a few years back. My boat was damaged and the owner of the boat that broke loose had no insurance or funds to pay my repairs. So I got stuck with the bill. There has to be a limit on the boats moored and they should pass laws to have a minimum of PIP insurance. If the boat doesn’t have a valid registration they should be removed all together from any waterway. This is a real issue and the transit boater will be affected must once laws are in place. Also it’s starting to affect the keys which needs to be stopped before it becomes an issue like in south Florida.
Do you think it would be better for these people to be homeless out in the elements? I myself was disabled from a Refinery chemical release so I live on my boat because I have no income and it's the cheapest way for me to survive. Not to mention I have life-threatening reactions to Everyday chemicals so I can't live in any existing buildings or with anybody at all. What was I supposed to do? I'm asking because everybody commenting seems to have all the answers
The instant you mandate insurance insurance rates. Increase by several orders of magnitude. Many can't get insurance because they have to come up with thousands to get the boat surveyed then it is only 250 a year for liability insurance but $5000 for haul out survey and then any repair deemed to be needed so yeah let's move these people off the boats and under the bridges, then we can make sleeping on public property illegal and spend millions more jailing these people talk about penny wise and dollar wasteful.
If a storm rips my boat off of its moorings and damages your boat my insurance company is going to claim act of God and fuck you over in the proverbial snow there buckwheat.
What you didn't have insurance on your boat ? Somebody else should pay for the damage of your neglect ? You believe those with money should have the ability to violate the rights of poor.. Then we should destroy the currency and put the shoe on the other foot
Financial responsibility should be enforced upon every individual whether seaman or on land. Leaving a boat that may cause damage to a person or state without insurance or financial proof of payment is unfair to everyone. I don't like to make insurance companies rich or to have excessive laws but when people allow lower nature and negligence become an expense to others something needs to be done. We are better than a third world country.
As a lifelong Floridian born and raised in Miami. I now live in North Florida. The Anchorage and long time,, mooring balls, living in a designated Anchorage area. I believe all vessels will need to be fully insured, the derelict and sinking of these vessels, ends up being the burden of the taxpayers of the city and state. Wind up having to remove these at our cost. This is what created this special type of legislation in the first place. We have too many derelict and sunken boats all over the state that has created a massive environmental problem, navigational problems. All these costs fall back on the taxpayers of Florida. Has the taxpayer here in the State of Florida and someone who truly enjoys all the outdoors recreation that has to offer, I don't think I should have to pay for somebody else's poor seamanship skills, and there inability to acquire insurance for their vessel.

Enjoyed boating in Miami very much back in the 90’s, however after 911 that city lost its mojo, the cool people left and the barbarians moved in. Now it’s just low class on money, sad thing really.

That's true. Got to be a middle ground. A screening process maybe. Maybe a check in process where you can determine cruisers and locals setting up shop on barely floating vessels.
Unfortunately, it’s the only affordable housing in the area. It’s pretty normal to see people living on a boat that hasn’t moved under its own power in years and is just a floating apartment. My advice for Mike is to watch his back. Those are pirate waters.
@ozarksailor2714 True but leaving South Florida should be the goal. South Florida is where I grew up. I doubt my quality of life would be what it is now if I tried to stay. What happens is the "bum boats" become hazards to navigation after the next big storm. Brevard County FL just cleaned up the Indian River & guess who gets to pay the bill ..
State of Hawaii makes you do a "Bouy run" periodically to prove your vessel isnt derelict. The main issue is that other than fines which people just ignore, there is no mechanism to remove vessels that have been at anchor for years for violations.

I can understand their concern for boats in disrepair. There should be a system for logging who is in the anchorage and how long they have been there so there is room for new boats coming in to stage for the trip to the Bahamas. I think they are killing income for the city by banning these transient boats.
This is AMERICA! no one cares! From the perspective of a Canadian... Rich people dont want Canadian cruisers looking into there windows! That's what this is about!
Everyone would be floored if they saw what’s going on both sides of the highway entering into key west. There are at least 100 homeless pirates living in dinghies in and around key west.⛵️
We're not homeless. You try living down here with rent being $1600 a month for a ROOM. You have to have 2 full time jobs to live down here. It's cheaper to live on a boat.
The anchorages are so full of vessels that obviously haven’t moved in a long long time that visitors have little if any place to anchor. We’ve stopped going to KW as a result. It is a mess. I understand both sides of the issue so idk what to about it. Bigger controlling govt doesn’t sound right but people will take advantage of the system and ruin it for everyone otherwise.
Blame the boaters for not policing themselves. Living in coastal Fla, we see the issue. Just homeless camps on the water. A lot of them end up washed onshore after a storm, leaving the taxpayers to haul their crap off. Plus, they have no insurance for any damages!😡
That’s a stupid statement. Boaters can’t arbitrarily police other boaters without legal authority. Even if they were granted the legal framework to do so, there would be violent confrontations and time/effort expense involved. Why would the legitimate cruisers do that? That’s why we have professional law enforcement.
Call me pessimistic, I've already seen too much. I spent time in Hollywood North Lake, Lake Sylvia, and lived in South Beach, and Miami. The rich people don't want to see the poors. Florida is leading the way in criminalizing anyone not making 6 figures. This is a front in that war. I anticipate cruising will exclude more and more of Florida, and specifically the South. Crossing to The Bahamas from West Palm, Port Everglades, or No Name will become a thing of the past. West Palm Beach will become the new demarcation. You can expect many other places to follow.
Raised in West Palm Beach. It was on the Outskirts, Far West st the time. Was there in 2014; I see the Wealthy Devouring South Florida. Making it Suck.
That is truer than most realize & at core of current global problems stemming from push to globalism ideology false path which is against human nature & the critter kingdom also , came across this phenomena when researching yabby farming in Australia (fresh water crays) . . the water in farm ponds has to be turbid as in cloudy or else if clear the males can see each other across the way & spend all their time fighting with each other & not putting on weight for the table . . I believe this applies to humans & the internet is causing endless stress to an extent & squabbles
Tragedy of the commons, nobody was concerned about people anchoring short term, but legitimate cruisers got caught up in the attempt to run off the derelict boats dumping sewage overboard
I have no dog in the fight because I neither live in Florida nor do i cruise anymore. But if you are incensed by this ask yourself this question. Why would anyone in south Florida want you to be there? It's not like you add anything to the economy. No fuel purchases, no mooring ball purchases, force bridge openings disrupting traffic, dinghy to shore to use free facilities, minimal restaurant visits etc. Many do anything they can to not even get their waste tanks pumped. Look at all the vessels with the yellow fuel tanks on the deck just to get an understanding. And 1 guess as to which country they are mostly from. Its all take and no give. The Bahamas figured this out and at least charges $300 or $600 balance it out a bit. Cry me a river but until you become a valuable and welcome contributor to the local economy and not just a mooch then this is what you get.

As a cruiser I have found so many anchorages filled with derelict boats that haven't moved in years. These boats make it hard for cruisers to find good anchorage since many of them are sunken and create a hazard to navigation. Many of these boats belong to people that have gone away and basically abandoned their boats for months at a time. This is not just a Florida problem since I have seen it all along the intracoastal.
The problem started 5 years ago in Seattle. These homeless have found they can get these boats at the recycle yards for free OR they find some idiot that took on a project boat that got out of control and snatch that for free. These boats have leaking holding tanks (sewer, black tank) generally no operational water tank(s) and incredibly unsafe cooking setups (they catch fire a lot). All their sewage goes directly into the water because of leaking tank or NONE OF THEM can afford a pump out service and then you and your kids swim in it. SMH disgusting people, so disgusting!
We use to have a squatter living next to our property here in Texas but I gave him plenty of grief over and over and finally the neighbors started the same and the creep moved on.

Thank you for the video. I am anchored at the Miami Marine Stadium and we are becoming to get harassed by the authorities as well. I can understand that because of the derelict boats and abuse of SOME of the vessel owners, the need to regulate anchorages but you can’t throw out the baby with the bath water. At least in the MMS anchorage I can assure you that the environmental impact is mostly from “weekend boaters” who come into the area and not the ones anchored there. BTW, that is not the “Miami River” those are the Miami Beach Canals. I grew up fishing those!! Smooth Seas and Fair Winds.
I think short term......one week or less would be enough time to provision and take a few days to rest would be fair......the long term stuff just brings in the riff Raff.
I haven't been there yet. Hope to someday. But, there is a difference between the sailing community and homeless living on boats. You can imagine that most people don't want homelessness near them and water front is very desirable place to live for the non-homeless.
Super disapointing is what that is. I anchored in Biscayne Bay for 4 days coming up from the Keys. I understand not wanting derelict boats anchored about but come on! Headed to FL in the next couple months to put my boat back in the water and hopefully get her the hell out of Florida all together. Fair winds sir!
I anchored outside of No Name Harbor while waiting for good weather passage to Bahamas. Anchorage is also available across from Miami Beach municipal dock.
Honestly would you like people sleeping in cars in the public parking right next to your private property and within walking or swimming distance? Where do they throw out the trash if its a problem to come to shore and where do they refill water supply and dump sewage? Oh yeah thats right 200 feet from my dock so i can see all of it um brother i lived both lives on the water and on land but these people are absolutely within disturbing and video recording distance.. What if a pedo is living on the water next to my home skirting the law because hes/shes on water so yeah im with miami beach "phuc off" and live outside the bay like maybe tie to a Buoy about a mile away from civilization is more appropriate. I never anchored in-bay always out-bay so i feel nothing when i say what i said.. Its principle 👍
Planning on leaving Florida after almost 3 decades. Sailing both boats up to a different state that appreciates workers and allows liveaboards. Florida has gotten greedy, hateful and doesn't appreciate their labor force.
thanks for the tip about the fuel pump fraud. i hope any on land or water can find a set of community resource regulations much better than the unfairness the people responsible for fuel sales in your area have allowed, etc.
This is WHY… it started in Seattle and has spread east. Homeless commandeer boats that barely float and make it their homeless camp which seems to be a “recycled home” and a good thing BUT there is some very serious problems with it. 1. No working black tank (sewage) so it goes directly into the water…. Massive environmental problems. 2. No money to have working black tanks pumped out so it gets dumped directly into the water. 3. They sink very often and that’s not only an environmental disaster but the state has to pay 6 figure money per boat to have them removed. It’s ironic that these are the same “save the planet” people that are doing this while destroying the water ways. SMH
Rich stink-boaters never pump their blackwater into the harbor instead of burning $60 worth of gas to go to the nearest pump-out station. Even if that were true, one stink-boater dumps more oil and gas into the water than a hundred blow-boaters... and let's not even talk about the air pollution... and noise pollution. And what about little stink-powered jon-boats? Where do you suppose those fishermen empty their bladders? Why do most of them seem to carry black buckets that always come home empty?
Really well in a recent report where police raided a number of boats only one seemed flush overboard they did their tests by flushing due through the toilets.
Ain't done with you yet pumpkin how many blow boats are there in Biscayne bay a thousand live abroad 2000 how many it they all flush overboard would they put anywhere near as mush sewage into the water that the wastewater treatment plants dump ? Or as much feces as rain washes down storm sewers from the cities dogs please most of these people get pumped out and some have composting toilets instead of wasting millions trying to prevent these people from living aboard maybe free pump outs at all marinas or a pump out service boat for live aboard's that need it,? Great video. If your fuel containers are 20 litre each (looks like they are) and a US gal is 3.7 L the 15 US gallons you pumped would only fill 80% of the total 60 liter capacity of the three containers.
It would be nice if some space was saved for cruisers who are only going to be around long enough to see some sights and to provision. Quite often, the popular spots are full or nearly full and anchoring, in high congestion areas, is always risky unless someone stays onboard.
Times are gone when the abundant middle class could live on the Miami shoreline and while others could afford a nice sailboat and look after it in the bay. The middle class has grown much fewer in number while the very rich and very poor have increased in number. America no longer has the opportunity for a good living as it had decades ago. Government politicians are incapable of sustaining a healthy economic balance, but instead have let the economy go to ruin. It's a shame. The USA was the peak of human civilization until the government messed with it.
Blame the banning of new canal communities. Used to be developers would just dredge 5 miles of canals and create another 500 new waterfront lots. At that time living on the water was only 10% more than living on land nearby. But once the canal ban went into place, the prices of waterfront property skyrocketed. Now you'll see an EMPTY LOT with sailboat access sell for over a million, while an empty lot across the street that's landlocked might be $150k.
My family came to Miami in 1919 my Plan B if I ever lost all my money and didn't have a place to stay was to get a small boat and anchor out but as the years have gone by I can see that as less and less possible but years ago there were a lot of places you could anchor out beside the main anchorages I think there's still a liveaboard community at Coconut Grove at dinner key but I haven't been there in 10 years. For a long time I lived on a houseboat on the Miami river W 27th Ave. where Delaware Parkway goes over the river I subscribe to your channel good luck
Sailors are notoriously the cheapest, no crowbar can open their wallet demographic on the water. Sure, there are plenty of sailors spending $$$ in Hylas63's and penny pincher powerboaters, but when you see a loner dude in a 1978 Catalina 30 with original sails, expect nothing.

In key largo at the jewfish creek bridge there are several liveaboard boats tied to the mangroves without power anchored with room air-conditioners. Monroe county does not seem to care. there are also derelict half sunken boats in the area. drive down US1 and you will see some of them. Drive to Gilberts and the blackwater Siren and you will see many more. some of these boats are actually in hurricane holes and they sit for years. to use the dinky dock you must be friends with the ramp owner. launching a power boat is 50 dollars.
The fact is, there are FAR too many boaters who squat. You know who I am talking about. The barnacles who muck up the area with their dilapidated boats. They screw it up for everyone else.

Pay no fucking taxes except when you buy the boat and every year you register the boat, and on every dollar I've ever earned in my fucking life, or anything I buy from stores no I'm paying no taxes at all, no taxes at all. Meanwhile rich landowners that undervalue their property to dodge tax are getting $200,000,000, from Florida to offset the cost of hurricane insurance.
It's a gamble in some places, in others the boating community is very helpful and respectful. If there's no hitch post or cleat, a mushroom anchor will usually suffice if you can't drag up on shore 🙃
There are always some people who want to remove other people and limit their opportunities! More often than not, it's those with the most money who want some other people removed!
It was weird. I was told by an old salt to weather a storm in the venetian Islands. I anchored there in good weather and was immediately removed by police. Why? I was not looking into rich peoples yards! It just felt wrong and unconstitutional. However. I'm just a snowbird from Canada leaving the USA within days. Same in cities all up and down the west coast. The wealthy paid good money not to have to see us. Only boats they want to see passing their windows is Mega yachts.
Where I live there are floating homeless camps, half the boats are incapable of sailing literally sit in the same spot for months. The “campers” dump waste directly into the water, drug dealing and drug use are rampant. Anything left on private docks WILL be stolen, kayaks, bbq’s, aluminum railings… Maybe Miami Beach has gone overboard I don’t know, but I wish my municipality would crack down and tow some of these floating crack houses away.
Those "5 gallon" cans you have are actually 6 gallons mol. If you put 5 gallons in a 6 gallon can you then have room for expansion, and then you don't have fuel all over your decks. Read the labels on your cans, I think you will find I am right.
I live over in Tarpon Springs, FL and Florida currently has laws that are more than adequate for sailing vessels who need to moor offshore. When politicians are persuaded by their wallets and not the wishes of the people you will always have an issue. Miami Beach is one of the top offenders for this due to the amount of wealthy people who live there. As many older generation say, worst thing that happened to Florida was air conditioning.
The same thing is happening in the bay off Marin County in California. There are many derelict boats that have not moved for a long time. Like Florida, it is boaters against property owners.

It is unfortunate that many municipalities are acting to restrict anchoring, (This is happening in places like Sausalito, CA) But, from what I observed at Key West, I can't say that I blame them. There are so many derelicts anchored permanently around Key West that it is virtually impossible for a cruiser to find a spot. Fantastically, Key West provides free moorings forever. The moorings as well are unavailable to cruisers passing through. The mooring field is full of derelicts. The derelicts are a general hazard to navigation as their rotten ground tackle often fail, causing the derelicts to cut loose. There's also a sanitary aspect as I suspect that many, many derelicts are direct discharging fecal matter into coastal waters. Perhaps a compromise would be allowing anchoring for 30-45 days, and require vessel inspections. Captains should be required to prove that their vessel is navigable and present servicable ground tackle. But all this would necessitate the hiring of marine peace officers.
There have always been people living on boats. They are just mad they are not sucking enough money from them. Not just Florida. just finding a legal way to kick people out.
Hey, I had the same situation recently in Colorado about a pump shorting me. I filed a complaint online with the state and the next day got a call from the department official who went on to tell me they appreciate the input and now this station on a "short list" meaning they are going to be checked regularly.

Derelict boats are a real problem in Florida. One of the problems is that it is almost impossible to take possession/ownership of a derelict vessel by either the government, a business, or private individual. I’ve seen vessels sunken and just remain there for years and years. The owners of these vessels will invariably claim not to be the owners because they don’t want to have to pay for their removal. Simple common sense laws seem to be beyond our legislature. The state should be able to take possession of a vessel with reasonable notification to the registered owner. Vessels should not be allowed to be live aboard without proper functioning marine sanitation systems.
Well miami, ft Lauderdale suck. I never stop in those places. Just go to the Bahamas or keys. I live in Jupiter and can honestly say that the most beautiful boating locations are up here - away from all the man made concrete and steel. I've been out in the bay of Miami and it was not for me at all. The best boating I've experienced is Stuart, FL. There are lots of gorgeous unmaned islands and a giant sand bar where you will always find dozens of other boats lined up.

I served on the Miami Beach Marine Authority for many years. It all boils down to the gentrification of the coast line. The rich landowners do not want their views of the water obstructed. Others are paranoid of strangers in boats being so close to their homes.
That's method up
A few people ruining it for the rest that follow the rules even if they are unwritten.

Rich Folks Ruling Poor Folks.
No Shame!
Sad but true. It's pur responsibility to take care. I promise to do my part and I try..
The other problem is when spend comme they lace their boats and then they sink. It become a hazards to other boaters and the tax players.
@@claudehopper9813 where did these derelict boats come from didn't somebody with a bunch of money dump them? I had a similar thing happen years ago when my Chevy Metro with a 7.8 gallon tank suddenly took over 10 gallons to fill up. I called and reported the station and they eventually got closed after several large fines for repeatedly doing the same thing. In my state (Washington), and other I am sure, they actually have unmarked cars with dummy measuring tanks that they use to check the rate at gas stations. The stations don't even know they are being checked. Still it is an understaffed part of the state government and they do depend on tips to know who they should be checking.

I have lived abroad and cruised tens of thousands of miles and have all but given up on the United States.
There are so many abandoned and trash boats all around Miami and Miami Beach. It's awful.
Getting rid of abandoned vessels is different than towing away someone's home
I agree with you
Do you think it would be better for these people to be homeless out in the elements?
Living on water and dumping sewage is awful, people used to swim there but dang if I would get in the water

All the sewage from Miami ends up in the sea anyway.
Not to mention contaminating our beautiful earth.

Watch your dingy like a hawk, in fact do not take your eye off it day or night in this area.
The anchorage’s in southern Florida turn into trailer parks on the water without heavy enforcement.
I left with nothing but my car, clothes and the hope to find some work. It worked out. Knowing what I know now, I would have done it even easier today despite it being more expensive overall.

Yup. Too many “existaboards” who on land would be living under a bridge have ruined many places for the rest of us.
I live in North Carolina and here in Brunswick county you cant anchor anywhere for more than 10 days then you must leave the county.

Rich people are like politicians. Do as i say. Not as i do. Have to dictate their will on others.
I concur
@@wingers69 ahh…. I do live down here.

Really? You're going to cry about taxpayers cleaning up after a disaster? Hahaha.
They just lost their boat!
I go down so will they

That is truer than most realize & at core of current global problems stemming from push to globalism ideology false path which is against human nature & the critter kingdom also , came across this phenomena when researching yabby farming in Australia (fresh water crays) . . the water in farm ponds has to be turbid as in cloudy or else if clear the males can see each other across the way & spend all their time fighting with each other & not putting on weight for the table . . Tragedy of the commons, nobody was concerned about people anchoring short term, but legitimate cruisers got caught up in the attempt to run off the derelict boats dumping sewage overboard
Great video ! Thank you for sharing the gas station tip down Miami River 😉

Recycle the bathwater at least.
Fair winds sir!

thanks for the tip about the fuel pump fraud. i hope any on land or water can find a set of community resource regulations much better than the unfairness the people responsible for fuel sales in your area have allowed, etc.
In my area Va.
cheap 87 octane $3.25 a gallon
Propane a gallon $1.99
Diesel a gallon around $3.60
SMH
The water quality around BLOW BOATERS is polluted with human waste.Yep,they dump their holding tanks.

I live over in Tarpon Springs, FL and Florida currently has laws that are more than adequate for sailing vessels who need to moor offshore.

Too much junk in the water. Blame the deadbeat club.
Good stuff! Really sucks how inhospitable they are to boaters! Odd how longtime maritime law can be skirted also.
