Great video. I didn’t have the mini hooks so I simply took two finishing nails and clamped them in two vice grips and I bent the finishing nails to a right angle at the tips. Worked perfectly and the agitator popped right out. There was grime on the mounting area of the agitator as well as the agitator cap. My washer must be a bit larger because there was I believe a dozen nuts holding the drum down. I could not loosen the nuts with a socket and ratchet nor my cordless drill. It was difficult because the drum would keep spinning while you’re trying to turn the nut. I could’ve got my impact wrench from the garage that I use with my compressor but my wife and I decided the cleaning was good and if we have an issue with odor next time we’ll do a complete disassembly. For others doing the job the first thing that I did was remove the sump pump from underneath the washer and clean in the sink as well as scrub out the drain hose to the sump and from the sump to the wall drain. The flex hoses were very stinky, but not too grimy. When we do a deep clean like Howard did, I’ll have my wife video me using Howard’s technique.
Exactly! I got the top piece off, and I can’t figure out how to get the next part off because it’s already off! My sheets are stuck under the dang thing

You will still get some floaters as stuff breaks loose. Good luck all. It's a shitty design for trapping crap you can't clean
This is so true. I just went through this process. It's relatively easy to disassemble and clean the drum (inside and out) as the video shows but that agitator disc is the REAL problem. As Jason mentioned, the stainless steel you see when you look down in your washer is stamp-pressed around a large plastic disc. Good luck separating but even more good luck ever putting it back together. I kept sending a fairly high pressure, directed stream of water onto the gunky plastic part thinking I got it completely clean and then after 20 minutes or so of this, noticed that flakes still kept floating out from the inside. It gets trapped between the plastic and stainless steel. I am now online looking to see how much the replacement agitator piece will cost because otherwise, this just isn't going to 100% solve your problem. I never use fabric softener (which causes this when mixed with your detergent) but I "inherited" this garbage design from the previous owner when I bought the house. I will never, EVER buy a top loader since it sounds like this happens to all of them.
I took my washer apart and scrubbed all of the “scrud” out of it. I can hear water sloshing around inside the drum after I took it out but couldn’t figure out how to drain it. After everything looked squeaky clean I reassembled the washer and ran an empty cycle. When complete, I still found flakes/residue inside the drum. I have no idea where it’s coming from, unless it’s coming from inside the drum itself.
I think it's coming from the wash plate. It is really really hard to get all of the dirt from under the metal layer that's stuck between it and the plastic. I bleached it and rinsed it from all angels and can still see dirt there when looking against the sunlight. I think water in the drum might be there for balance.
I really wish that you had shown how to actually remove that main top cover to access the drum. That's a critical part that you didn't show. Unfortnuately I can't get started with anything else until I can somehow get that cover up like you have at the very start of the video.

I think the reason this "scrud" accumulates is the exit point of the hose is higher than the bottom of the tub... so, trapped water not fully discharged is allowed to sit. My thinking is -you lower that exit point -so it's about the height of the pump -an inch or two above the floor, and then the sitting water will sit in the lowest loop of the hose, like a P-trap. I just cut a bit of the steel body with some tin snips so I could drop the hose down. Also, the design of the agitator is SO stupid -allowing scrud to collect between the stainless top plate and the plastic plate it's pressed to. After carefully bending the circumference of the steel plate away from the plastic, I separated the two -cleaned the plastic part well, and just installed the plastic part by itself without the steel plate. The plastic seems tough enough to endure the abrasion of zippers and rivets, etc. Since the little "hub cap" won't go back on the plastic, I just cut a piece of polycarbonate (plexi-glass) and screwed it onto the plastic with a rubber gasket in between. Just about to run a test wash, but I think these fixes will help eliminate future issues. (still shaking my head at the terrible design.)
The 1 and only reason you have this build up in your washer is because you use liquid soap and it is not soluble in anything but hot water. Had you used powdered soap you wouldn't have this as an issue.
Powdered soap never washes out of my clothes. When I go to transfer them to the dryer, there is still powder all over my clothes. What good does that do?@@donholzer898
Hello, why did you clean it? What problem was there? I have a similar LG Washer and have small dirt particles that just stay in the washer and don't flush away. Did you have a similar problem? And thanks for the tutorial, so helpful.
So I finally caved and called my home insurance company because I couldn’t get the agitator out, the guy came, he said it’s the same problem I thought, you discussed… but it is actually more expensive for my home owner insurance company to pay him to take it apart and clean it than it is for my insurance company to buy me a new one! Can you believe that crap!!!!
Oh My Gosh !!! How would a tiny person perform this task ? So if we get an LG Top Load Washer with an impellor, we get some kind of weird build up ... so we have to take it apart and clean it every 2 to 3 years? I was ready to buy an LG Toploader tomorrow ...this is really concerning me... if it is a washer . that cleans my clothes...what is this build up that needs to be removed from the washer ?
Just cleaner ours due to the "scrud" flaking off and finding it on clean clothes. It wasn't hard, and the drum doesn't weight that much. We didn't run a clean cycle on it as frequently as we should and this is what you get from it. Overall, it cleans clothes but you have to maintain it.
No filter? I’ve had my washer for just over a year, and it quit draining last night. I was hoping it was a clogged filter, but now I’m worried it might be my pump. Of course, I can’t find the right pump anywhere.
OK, for those looking about the top cover removal, I was able to find this other video that looks like it shows the removal of the top main cover. Link here: th-cam.com/video/a544XXIk6V4/w-d-xo.html
But will the white plastic piece underneath the center middle piece of the drum come off b/c I can see shadows of black stuff that looks like it is in between the bottom of the metal part and the plastic part.
Omg I am in the same dilemma as you! I could see the shadows of it. I took my waterpik (I don’t use it anymore) and managed to break some of it loose with the pressure from that but there is still a ton in there!
I had the same issue and really worked to get the thing off. What I found to was using the picks Howard suggested but instead of trying to muscle it off use a firm, gentle rocking motion and it will slowly loosen and come off.
my machine is almost identical. I said almost. It took a couple of hours and various tools to remove the agitator, The thing was seized in place pretty solid. Ten I started removing the nuts at the bottom of the drum. Do not do that . The nuts are on upside down bolts that fall in the bottom of the machine, they are not magnetic. So I had it. Time for a new machine. not worth the frustration.

I'm in that same situation right now of trying to get the adgitator plate off. I tried running a cleaning cycle since it uses hot water, didn't work. I'm not trying to run a soak cycle and pray that will loosen it up. If not, I don't know what I'll try next.
I started watching this.... And then stopped because you should have filmed what needed to be done to remove the screws etc etc instead of just explaining it. Kind of defeats the purpose of the video if you don't show how you did it in the first place!

What good does that do?@@donholzer898
can you do a step by step?
is the balance ring on top of the drum supposed to have water in it?
thanks! finally found a video that was useful!
Hello, why did you clean it? What problem was there? I have a similar LG Washer and have small dirt particles that just stay in the washer and don't flush away. Did you have a similar problem? And thanks for the tutorial, so helpful.
Same thing here.
I washed some stuff I shouldn't have thrown in and it made the washer smells. Now it's clean.
How did you remove the 10mm bolt from the agitator? It will not come off!!
a ratchet and some muscle, it resists for several turns
Great video i will try do it to mine❤
Thanks for the information - really helpful.
Is the 10 mm boat, a reverse thread or standard thread?
Good show my man! Thank you!
Your video starts with the top opened up already. How do you open this thing. Hating my washer!
I unscrewed 3 different set of screws already. Nothing lol
Yea, it’s a pain in the arse, he makes it all seem simple but didn’t show how long it actually took to take the darn thing apart
Mine is leaking and it's not from the hoses. What do I do?
Need the 1st step!
Is there a filter on these washers ?
I lifted the back and slid the top forward but it still seems stuck on the 2 black retainers on the side? How do you get it off?
How do you get the last wheel out?
I removed the screws the back will lift up but nothing else will move or open over the drum? 🤷♀️
did it fix the smell?
Thanks for the video👍🏼
Mine had screws in it btw, and my bottom pieces isn't coming out very easily. I can't get it out at all
OK, for those looking about the top cover removal, I was able to find this other video that looks like it shows the removal of the top main cover. Link here: th-cam.com/video/a544XXIk6V4/w-d-xo.html
So glad I read this comment, was exactly the video I was looking for, Thanks!!!
How do you clean out the crap that gets trapped in between the metal and the plastic on the plate? Does the plastic not separate from the plate?
That's what I want to know! I can see there is shadows of stuff in between
I did some research.. so far, you can’t get it 100% clean. Only option is the buy a new agitator.
Am I the only one having the toughest time getting the damn 10mm screw off? Any suggestions welcome
It would actually helpful if you showed it
so, essentially, the new-fangled "High Efficiency" washing machines are everything but. . .
Huge help
Thanks!
There should of been 6 screw the hold down the part the you said just has clips.
I’m unable to remove the agitator to do a deep cleaning. Any suggestions?
Me either. I have the bolt off but it will NOT come up.
That's my problem too! It's super stuck.. and I feel like we are breaking it trying to get it off.
So this washer doesn't have a lint trap?
No
I couldn't find Harbor FRIGHT!!! LOL
Where the hell is the filter?
Unlike a front load washer, there is no filter.
thank you.
I cannot for the life of me pull that bottom piece out of the washer. I’ve tried with the hooks. Pulled with all I had and it won’t come out
If you run a hot wash cycle the agitator plate will come right up after a couple minutes
I had the same issue and really worked to get the thing off. What I found was to use the picks Howard suggested but instead of trying to muscle it off use a firm, gentle rocking motion and it will slowly loosen and come off.
I'm in that same situation right now of trying to get the adgitator plate off. I tried running a cleaning cycle since it uses hot water, didn't work. I'm not trying to run a soak cycle and pray that will loosen it up. If not, I don't know what I'll try next.
Thaaaanks!
Thanks
The manual says the lint filter is actually located in the water line connector in the back. Can you confirm it? Thanks
It's a lot better when you actually do the steps showing them as you go, not talk about it later on.
I started watching this.... And then stopped because you should have filmed what needed to be done to remove the screws etc etc instead of just explaining it. Kind of defeats the purpose of the video if you don't show how you did it in the first place!
Where is the filter located?
There are no filters.
Inside the washer. Mine are green. They snap out and back in?
Wish you would’ve actually shown the work instead of just talking and waving the camera and your hands around already assembled or disassembled pieces.
Not what I was looking for.
Not easy to take off the washer plate after took the nut out like you describe...
I fought with mine and then was about to give up and it just popped off. 😂 i think the hard you fight the more imbalanced it becomes... and it just needs to be a straight pull
Id rather buy a new washer than to HAVE to go thru this. For one everytime something is disassembled and reassmbled it goes back together never exact so each time it wears out things get lost - so next thing u know - ur washers junk. Wish the pos used company i bought this from had cleaned it like they claimed too our washer has stunk since we got it and since taking out the topper on the middle of the center “agitator” spot i can see how disgusting it is!
Yeah overwhelmed already its honestly too much work for someone whose not getting paid 😂 uugh its this the point in having a washing machine!? Might as well wash clothes in the tub oh but then u gott remove ur house pipes and clean them 😂 uugh
Removing the agitator you said was really easy… I have the pick and hooks and that didn’t work at all!!!! (Mine has screws on top btw) 🤬
You make it seem so easy but it’s NOT, especially doing by yourself!
You dont show how you open the wacher.
This video was not helpful. You didn't even show how to disassemble.
You showed nothing. Thanks for nothing.
