Excellent video, exactly what I needed to see. Personally I can't stand fabric softeners and use minimal detergent because my skin is sensitive to these things.
There's something very satisfying seeing a washer disassembled and cleaned so thoroughly that I kinda want this guy's job now.

It's extremely important to keep the door opened at all times when not in use. Few know this. Many will argue to their death it's not necessary and will close the door to help the bacteria to grow.
I never close the lid when done. Gotta let it dry out. I've never had problems with smells from my washing machine. I don't use fabric softener either. Some people are just nasty lol
The struggle is real. Thankfully I pass the laundry room on my way to bed and always open the lid if others leave it down.

Yea, but it's more the mildew/mold/fungi that you don't want growing.
So I actually took apart my washing machine. The drum casing was factory glued (not bolted sadly) so I had to saw it. Cleaning off the mold/debris off the drum were extremely easy to do. It's just scrubbing with any kind of sponge would do, and a washing soap helps alot. Pretty easy. The tough part was sawing it open, gluing it back with silicone and assembly

because its mostly true. Fabric softener is like oily and can get your washer to become smelly like try to use fabric softener on your washer and after maybe 2 years you will probably notice the difference

I use dryer sheets, not fabric softener. Works the same and does not damage my washer or dryer. Fabric softener is a waste of money.
Just did that job yesterday on a Kenmore series 80. It was dirty but not as bad as the ones in this video.

I too had this thought, then my better senses kicked in...thank goodness.
I just tried to do mine the other day, it's a top loader I couldn't get the basket/drum out but I was able to get the bottom off and a good view of all the grime. I tried to scrub but there was no way I could do it efficiently so I added some vinegar and hit the clean machine button.
Yeah, i just disassembled 40% of it and got stuck on a rusted out screw. But I cleaned it the best I could, added a few hundred grams of lye in the detergent compartment, and put the machine on the highest temperature setting. A lot of crap came out, at some point brown specks and foam came out (I did not add detergent)
It's only the LG and Samsung washers that shred bearings in just a few years. My Whirlpool front loader has been bulletproof for 12 years and I abuse the crap out of it. I put small rugs, oily rags, shoes and all sorts of things in it that I probably shouldn't. It's never skipped a beat and never gotten smelly.
I have had a LG front loader washer dryer combo for 9 years and it's still going strong.
Nowadays, washers from even the big brands like Miele or Siemens/Bosch aren't bulletproof anymore. Stuff gets fabricated with too much plastic, inferior materials or simply build to last only until the 2year warranty is over.
Planned obsolence of the electronic parts, crappy making of mechanic parts, and if the bearings go out, you have to replace the whole barrel/drum, because the bearings have been plastic-welded into there.
Shocks also go bad embarassingly easy. (Yes, a washer has shocks. Shocks and springs.)
I'm probably never going to shell out another 1200€ for another high brand washer again.

@@skyure just replaced the water input valve assembly on my Electrolux. 7 years old and that was the first issue.
@@elibennett3034 To be honest, you're insanely lucky if your washer held out that long with just one repair.
I had a 20yo Siemens Washer, worked like a charm without needing any repairs until one day it didn't.
Since then, new washers that never lasted any longer than 2 1/2years without needing any major repairs. Expensive brand ones, too, since we believed (stupid as I was) that they would be high quality as promised.
Now I own an expensive POS that's only 5years old, which only keeps from falling apart by ME repairing it at least once every few months. I can tell you with confidence that the non-brand parts of this washer not only cost a fraction but also have a better quality than the normal brand parts.
You can see the stress fractures in cheap plastic parts, burst shocks leaking fluid, cheap heating elements that corrode at a ridiculous speed.
Electrical components exposed to water, were a simple rubber cover would have helped, but was saved because of cost-reduction.
Big brands aren't what they were anymore, sadly, their promises are nothing more than hot air blown into your face.
In these times, where you're supposed to look at the environment and want stuff that's build to last, you're blowing out money for things that you think would last you a decade (like most cars, not anymore) and you're left with a pile of literal scrap metal and plastic, and think to yourself "I should have bought a cheap washer." since they'll probably last the same amount of time (most often they last even longer), and you're paying less.

Well this has been absolutely terrifying. Thankfully I have never used fabric softener in my washer. I'm guess those scent beads I like so much are probably bad too ☹️
Also many years ago I excitedly purchased a front loader. I hated it pretty much the entire time I owned it. The mold issue was ridiculous. When it broke, I wasn't even sad. I was just happy that after the battle to get the door to open so I could get my clothes out, the rest of the water didn't spill out. The people who had to haul it out were not impressed that the machine weighed so much more than it should have from the trapped water that none of us could get to drain out. I purchased a new commercial upright and never looked back.

@@carsten.hamburg8771 Actually the hardness of the water varies of where you are located here but yet that's no issue since the machines are developed to adapt or be suited for our water types.
those beads are as bad, I made into a journey doing cloth diapering, and knowing the water and detergent buildup in my washing machine turns out that I should stop even the scented dryer sheets back then, I was wondering why I break out in rashes and clothes smells being left in a washer for a day... the unit has been here since it was built in 2004 and it's still working and running. The last time I had to do maintenance to it 2 yrs ago cause the bearing wore out.
This is why I would recommend people to buy an old unit and ask the appliance serviceman to service it first.

1. fabric softener works by lubricating the fibers in your clothes, making them softer to touch. but this same lubrication builds up in your machine as well and causes clogs.
3. i just dump a liter in. it's cheap and it can't hurt.

At the very end of the video when you said "2 tablespoons of detergent" were you saying that you should only use 2 tablespoons of detergent no matter what size (small, medium or large) or laundry you are washing? When were you saying to use 2 tablespoons of deteregent?
Larger, filthier loads may require a little more detergent. However, because all He detergents are hyper-concentrated, normal wash loads should use UP TO 1/3 cup.

Hello I've had my washer for about 8 yrs and recently everytime I load it it bangs super loud and shakes even though I try really hard to spread the clothes out so it balanced. What should I do??
Did you remove the shipping immobilizer thing on the back that you are supposed to on install?
@@jkxss I DK I didn't install it. When we bought it we had it delivered and installed.
If its a top loader, it could be shocks or maybe a loose belt. Also, it could be the inner metal tub has become damaged... possibly rusted in the center where it connects to the tub nut, causing it to spin unevenly and bang against the housing... (I learned from experience). I don't know your skill level, but washer machines are pretty simple and you can find some "how to" videos and fix it. For mine the total cost was $240, but includes shocks, belts, drive block, fabric softener filter (because I tried to open it) and the inner tub. Mine is 9 years old, and this was the first servicing it's needed. Hoping it lasts another 9 years. To be honest, fixing it was pretty simple except removing the tub nut.

Wish I had a power washer. That balance ring on the bottom of the Kenmore [Whirlpool] drum is impossible otherwise. My washer is more than 50 years old. The first time I took the drum out it looked like there was roadkill on the sides of the plastic tub. I had to scrape it off with a spatula. Just unimaginable that you can be washing your clothes in that filth.
You have a 50 year old Kenmore with plastic outer tub ? They were porcelain coated metal, BUT I do remember hearing Whirlpool did make some machines with plastic outer tubs in the early 70s.... Might have been a test run for the direct drives they were working on that would be released in the early '80s.

People keep saying that front loaders clean better. I do not agree. I've owned both at the same time and I didn't see an appreciable difference between one or the other.
It's all nice until that build up rusts and seizes components together.

There are many others too. Pedestal, washer/dryer combo that’s stacked like the 90s other washer/dryer combos where the machine can do both. Etc. when he was cleaning the filter on the front loader you could see the pedestal washer.

Yeah.......I’ve never just used two tablespoons of detergent.....😂 Ive even stopped using the cups it comes with. I pour straight out the bottle until the lord tells me to stop 🙏
That’s one of the worst things you can do to both your clothes and your machine. Make it easier on yourself if you don’t want to measure and use laundry detergent sheets. You can get them online probably easier than finding in a store. In most cases you can cut the sheets in half and get double the amount of estimated laundry loads. Too much detergent is one of the most common mistakes people make, a very very small amount goes a very long way. Soap residue and scum builds up and then starts to trap crap into your clothes and makes it harder to clean the actual machine too.
I wonder if the use of so much plastic is one reason for machines being so dirty. I don't remember washers from the 60's- 80s ever smelling bad.
because nobody used liquid detergent, everything was washed in powder (which contains oxygen bleach) and using hot or warm water
@@Kubulek17 One thing I know, there is always better to wash in warm/hot water as it actually gets all the stuff that the guys trying to clean off plus hot water actually does a better job cleaning, but if you have really hot water, the best bet is to use warm

Probably because modern appliances have sacrificial parts designed to break after a few years. These fancy computer controlled appliances have a ton of features but are fragile by design. Keep your washer as long as you can.

You can take the drum out. Your just choosing not to.
That dirty is far beyond the average machine dirty... even with 10 years of softener. How much softener do you use? Apply less than 1/2 cup per full load... Don't leave your clothes on soaking... You won't never see this nightmare.
At this point, I'd rather just use a laundromat and leave that responsibility to somebody else.
I found three racoons in my dryer
We don't use fabric softener to clean clothes we use it to soften the clothes, hence "fabric SOFTENER. My clothes never stink so I don't know what you are talking about. Pinesol stinks. I have a clean cycle on my washing machine to clean the machine and I use that every time I am done with my weekly washing. I don't like front loaders because they didn't clean my clothes and NEVER washed my sheets and blankets properly. I bought a top loader without an agitator. I had an old top load washer for 25 years and it worked well all those years. I think like everything else washers and dryers are NOT made as well as they used to be, they have built-in obsolescence, meaning they are built to fail after a few years.

The top loaders are pretty easy until you get to the part where the shaft comes up thru the inner tub. Ask me how I know 🙄 I’ve disassembled mine 2-3 times now.
