"screen is just the opposite of multiply"…I've been designing for 16 years full-time, a good 20 years since I took my first Photoshop class, never heard things explained so simple. Thank you for doing this, Unmesh.

@RealTimeX they're good? They're second to none. I only started into this one week ago, (I know you may laugh) I am 61 yrs of age and creative in other mediums etc but digital is new to me, like I said one week. Dear Unmesh, although I had subscribed to your channel after stumbling across one of your other great videos & falling in love with your in-depth style of explaining things, I had not watched this tutorial on Blending Modes till now and was really looking to understand it *with examples* somewhere. And man, what better & crisp way to learn it. You don't need to apologize for the long video because whoever is an expert/pro or gets bored listening to the basics, can very well fast forward the video, but for us aspiring amateurs, this repetitive basics teaching style of yours with quick examples, also showing us keyboard shortcuts (and also explaining why the shortcut does not work because the correct tool was not selected) all this is a blessing in disguise. You may not believe, but I watch a lot of tutorials while reading the subtitles/captions which are turned on as I do not have audio output at work and I revere you & your knowledge as much as Aaron Nace of the channel PHLEARN. And the fact that you are our Gujju, makes us all the more proud for you. Way to go brother..!! Keep the good work coming..!!
I don't just leave a comment and a thumbs up just for the sake of doing it. I also have a very short attention span but boy did i just watch the whole 27 minutes video!? Man, this is one of the best if not the best tutorial on blend modes on youtube! Thanks for your generosity and enthusiasm!! You are helping a lot of artists or aspiring digital artists like me.
If you have a short attention span but can focus on things which really interest you, you may have something like ADHD. It's common for people diagnosed with ADHD to have greater difficulty maintaining focus, except on a few select things that really motivate them to pay attention.
I don't know who would put thumbs down on this, but the fact this guy is providing free education on stuff that would normally take you years if ever to discover is truly a gift.
Every few years I decide I want to "really" learn Photoshop, but never before have I been SO STUNNED to find this kind of QUALITY tutorial! You have such a GREAT personality on top of such clearly laid out tutorials and a brilliant, intuitive teaching style! You do not waste a second of the listener's time, and I feel I wouldn't get this quality an education at a local community college, so just a huge THANK YOU for doing what you do, and sharing your knowledge with us for freeeeee!!!!!
Mate, I've been trying to learn photoshop for 3 years and all the tutorials were teaching to memorize instead of logical teaching. And almost all the tutorials from non-English speaking countries were bad. Now this is best compared to all kind of tutorials out there. Am glad you are an Indian tutor loved by many around the world.
Started using Photoshop at version 5, but this guy has though me a lot and motivates to learn more about this amazing software. His explanations will keep you interested and inspire you to learn more.
Finally somebody explains mechanics behind the names. You're god-sent! Now I finally understand why I would want to user specific blend modes, instead of just randomly applying them blindly.

Quick and simple examples with relaxed mood and good simplifying statements for newbies. I have been using Photoshop about 10 years now for light drawing and texturing, but this tutorial really opened my eyes for the complexity and versatileness of blending modes. From the game development side, you need to figure out how to use these modes to alter your images, but with graphical game assets, you usually want to render out the final result (if you are using pngs in your project) by merging the layers or you can leave it visible in Photoshop and then use it in the project.
You're the best. You have a very professional technique. Never stop making videos, which are very illustrative, even for people like me who have been using Photoshop for quite some time.
Awww . . . you *finally* did a video I found to be less than perfect! A couple of years ago, I wanted to *understand* blending modes, and around the same time, one of the clubs I'm in asked me to do a Member's Night presentation. So I decided to learn about blending modes--but all the resources I could find said the same things: You only need to know about 4 or 5, and a general description of what you see when you apply them. It took me a while and dozens of sources, but I finally got to the root of HOW and WHY blending modes work, along with the math behind each and every mode (every blending mode is simply a mathematical operation applied to the base--all the layers on the "bottom" as you see them using information found in the blend layer). But the way WE see the math, the way Photoshop sees the math, and the way Photoshop TELLS us it sees the math are based on completely different principles. Bottom line is that after I gained an understanding of how they work, how they relate to each other (most of the blend modes are paired with another in that they are performing reciprocal mathematical operations--which is why Screen is the opposite of Multiply--and why you can actually use Multiply to Screen and vice versa), I found that I use almost ALL of the blend modes. There IS one question I have remaining about blend modes, though, and NOBODY I have contacted seems to have or be able to find the answer. I was hoping that it would be in this video . . . but I knew that it wouldn't be as soon as you said the dreaded "There are only four blend modes you'll ever need" bit. Here's the question, though, should you ever have occasion to review the comments on a video that's a year and a half old: Usually, we are told that the Opacity and Fill sliders differ in that Opacity affects the totality of the active layer, while Fill affects the *content* of a layer, but does *not* affect any Styles applied to that layer. This is true for most blend modes, but there are 8 (in my presentation, I called them the "Crazy 8") which this is NOT true for. With the Crazy 8, the Opacity and Fill sliders affect the *content* of the layer differently, and *NOBODY* seems to know why. And since essentially all that Opacity does is create a blend which moves the numerical color values in the active layer closer and closer to the numerical values of the corresponding pixels in the base layer, thus creating the illusion of transparency, whatever difference in function there is must lie in the Fill function, because it must be doing something more complex.
So far the best video on this subject! Suddenly Photoshop is not so fearful anymore..Your presence and presentation makes it very lively... looking forward for more of these brilliant videos... You're the best, Unmesh!
So much knowledge! You are such a wonderful teacher. Blending modes are a lot clearer now. It really helps to see how 'easy' it is to get certain things done simply with these modes.
