How to Match Subject with Background in Photoshop | Part 1

  • Powerful Tools and Techniques to Blend the Subject with the Background in Photoshop! Right from making selections to creating shadows, in this tutorial, we'll go through the complete process of making the perfect composite step-by-step. Using interesting tools like advanced gradient maps, and dodging and burning to get the subject match the background.
    In this part, we will focus on creating monochromatic composites. Firstly, we will make a selection using Color Range as the background is mostly separated by color. Then, once we place the subject in the background and set the correct size and level, we will use tools like Curves, Gradient Maps, Layer Styles, and perform dodging and burning to get the subject to blend.
    In the end, to unify the whole composite, we will apply some global effects which will make both the elements one. I hope this tutorial helps you. Thank you so much for watching!

He even showed us how to open documents because "he doesn't want to keep us confused", while many youtubers just keep jumping steps that seem obvious (to them, at least). He is the best, hands down.

Your video production quality is extremely high, your instructions are easy to hear and follow, there's no wasted time or gimmicks in the video, your methods are very effective and non-destructive, and your final image looks amazing. In addition to all that, you are very friendly and comfortable in front of the camera. Excellent tutorial. Thanks so much!

    What a lession!

    Put the subject on the background
    take a layer mask on the subject
    Then a Gradient Map on it
    On gradient map take the sample of Highligts ans Shadows of the background while selecting the Symbol not the layer
    That's it you got a matching background Subject.
    The rest is your caricature!

    Great techniques here. One thing you didn't address is when there is a substantial resolution difference between the elements. Zoom in to this image and you'll see the lady is much finer resolution than the more pixelated and fuzzy background. Sometimes you may want to add noise or play with slight posterization on the finer element to bring it down to better match the less resolved element.

    the reason overlay does not spill out is because it paints over shades of gray but does not paint over 100% white of 100% black it will only paint over shades in between(for those who were confused why) buts amazing I never thought of using if in masks like that, just realised how un open my mind it :P thx man
    PS: you dont need to hold alt to make a mark with eye dropper just shift is fine

    Good stuff, however we must remember that on the shadow side of every object, there is always "reflected light." This light will be reflected from the ground or sky, etc. All professional photographers and those trained in the arts understand this. I was trained in classical drawing and painting. He should not be getting rid of reflected light. Taking out fringe light from the masking is proper, but he should explore the best ways to bring in natural-looking reflected light. This is where an artistic background (training) is beneficial, since you may have to paint some of this in or use some more sophisticated methods with blending modes to get the reflected light. To my eye, it is not natural to see all reflected light obliterated. This is the problem. If you study drawing and painting, you will know that it is OK to lose the line between subject and shadow in certain areas, but not to obliterate this distinction between the two altogether. In the arts, this is called "lost and found edges." If you google that, you can see examples of what I'm saying. Once you learn this principle, you work will progress to a much higher level. I'd like to see him address this problem in a future video. Perhaps with this same photo. To be clear, there is some lost and found edges going on, but the overall reflected light is not correct and not at all believable in this photo. I still appreciate his teaching though.

      @Old_Man_Jay 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree! Too bad you made this comment almost 2 years after this video was made. It deserves more attention. There may be tons of people who don't have a background in art and have watched this video and are probably making unconvincing composites because they don't fully understand how light and shadow works.
