    👍🏻 Another excellent tutorial.
    The precise script of the spoken description makes understanding even easier.
    Also the special note that this is about HOW the individual settings of the tools work, and not HOW WELL they can do it.

    This is the best tutorial on this kind of masking of the many many I have watched and had given up on. Really demystified select and mask (which is so much like layer modes in its complexity and "insider" like organization of all the sliders etc) Thanks so much.

    Very nice. An alternate way to do this is to refine just the edges on the body first with the global refinement sliders. Output this refinement to a layer mask and then leave select and mask. Go back in select and mask again and all the sliders will be reset and now you can refine just the edges of the hair. Output the hair refinement to layer mask and it will update your current mask with the hair refinements. The advantage of doing it this way is you end up with only one layer and one mask.

    • @photoshopcafe
      @photoshopcafe  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      If I were to do it this way, I probably would output to a selection the second time and use it to manually paint the mask where I need it. I always prefer flexibility for users in a tutorial, which is why I used 2 masks. But there are many ways to do things in Photoshop.

    Thank you! Not sure what is up with the trolls, but it is pretty difficult actually to find great teachers like yourself in the sea of so-called, YT "tutorials" out there- I find most just fly through it super fast, leaving out critical steps, not showing us visually what they're doing, might have annoying music, lengthy intros and self-promoting ads, and sometimes gabbing throughout, or they're just all over the place, (like they have ADD or are on too much coffee lol), making it impossible for someone to truly follow, or learn. Personally, I transcribe good tutorials so I can refer to later as I am in school and always jumping from one program to another, making it difficult for me to really master one program. I can't tell you how many tutorials I started trying to follow and transcribe, only to abandon it because of the aforementioned non-teaching approach. It is actually more rare than not, for someone to be able to teach vs being good at what they do. So just know, I appreciate you and your true teaching ability. Cheers, Cat-

    I'm having a problem with the tool. When I make a selection of a person and place another colored layer under it, the top layer is a smaller. It looks like the select and mask tools makes the original picture size a few pixels smaller. Any idea?

    Hi Colin - If you're working on refining the model's hair (in Select & Mask) - which I thought changes the mode to Object Selec. - how did you get your "Real-time Refinement" checkbox and word in the Select & Mask Properties not to be greyed out? Mine is greyed out. In my UI, I can see the box is checked on, but that line in Select & Mask Properties is greyed out. Yours shows as fully bold and accessible in your video. Thx.

      @@photoshopcafe nope …I surely did but I wanted you to show the information not using a plain background . • @stalk05
      @stalk05 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@graham_T Most people never do show them on busy backgounds. They all choose Studio quality images on plain backgrounds to "Show you the tools", yet us in the real world have to work with poor quality images and ones with the busiest backgrounds known to man. None of these techniques shown here are even New or revolutionary, but i get your point, as most never show them on a new plain background either, as it will show that the selections are not that great in the 1st place. Most times we have to brush in hairs, use overlays or substitute images, then blend them to get a nice result. The decontaminate colours actually ruins the ends of hairs and make them blocky

    • @photoshopcafe
      @photoshopcafe  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@stalk05 I can't speak for other creators, but my goal in this tutorial is to clearly and simply teach how the tools in Select and Mask work. Cluttering it up with 20 minutes of other techniques doesn't make for a clear tutorial. I have made lots of other tutorials on making selections on difficult backgrounds using appropriate techniques for those tutorials, because that was the focus of those tutorials. It's not that this tutorial is wrong, it's that you are watching the wrong tutorial. :)

    • @photoshopcafe
      @photoshopcafe  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@graham_T Gotcha, I have many other tutorials on difficult backgrounds, those will be more useful for your current needs than this tutorial which isn't focused on that topic. This tutorial is about Select and Mask to refine selections that you have already made.

    We often have this problem with smooth hair ....

  • @ivan_12345
    @ivan_12345 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Decontaminate colors is the stupidest setting, because it's destructive (just fills the layer). I've asked Adobe on their forum to change that (about two years ago already), but things are still there... P.S. I could post a link to support this idea, but I doubt TH-cam allows it in the comments

    • @chasebros4948
      @chasebros4948 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Decontaminate colors is destructive so you wouldn’t want to apply it to the original image without making a copy first. Make two copies of the image. The one on bottom will have the subject cut out without decontaminate colors. The one on top will have the subject cut out with decontaminate colors. Throw away the mask on the decontaminate colors layer and then clip it to the bottom layer. Doing it this way might not be ideal but it’s non-destructive.

    • @ivan_12345
      @ivan_12345 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chasebros4948 that's a bit stupid, isn't it? I'd rather do it manually in a more controlled way.😜 I doubt you know that, but there's about 10 ways to reduce fringing.

    • @chasebros4948
      @chasebros4948 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ivan_12345 how can you doubt that I know something without knowing my level of experience in Photoshop? I am fully aware there are multiple ways of reducing fringing. There are always multiple ways of solving any specific issue in Photoshop. I was just offering one solution to use decontaminate colors in a non-destructive way.
