      He said he was inspired by it, its not 1:1 to the exterior took design ideas from there, there is even a clip from spirits within in the video.

    I wish "orbital" was an accurate description. KSP ruined me for sci-fi. I can't accept an object sitting stationary above a planet.
    Cool build nonetheless.
    Edit: Just noticed upload date, not that there are orbital mechanics being simulated with the actual planets either.

    You know you're a halo fan when the phrase orbital cannon makes you think of the UNSC MAC Orbital Platforms and from 21:13 - 22:00 the timer block makes you think of the pills of Autumn and when the firing sound comes on around 22:00 you think of sound you hear when chief has his shields down

    Many people disagree with me, but it was one of my favorite movies of all time. Nice build of it!

      Unfortunately I do need to mention it since it is a very underrated movie, and not many of us are aware of it. It is just freaken epic : D

      XallZallRising Oh doesn't mean you didn't have to mention it ~.^.
      It's underrated because it got just absolutely horrendous negative feedback upon its release, though. Usually it's because of these two reasons below;
      *Because it was one of the very first all-CG movies, people were not used to it and it was an experiment of sorts. Many people thought it looked too fake because it was trying to look realistic, as opposed to other CG movies that focus on being cartoony. as a video gamer, though, I am used to such graphics so whatever. I will admit the animations used are a little 'off' in the movie.
      *It has final fantasy in the title yet it has nothing to do with a final fantasy game. In my opinion it harkens to final fantasy story devices enough that it should count, but that's what a lot of people were mad about.
      You could also argue that video game movies have a bad reputation, but I don't know how much that affected people's preconceptions of the movie.

      Yeah I didn't think of it that way since, I too am used to it, or used to video game graphics, I can image the people that were new to something like this just got freaked out or something along the line, or as you said, saying it looked fake.
      While people that were used to such graphics and knew about final fantasy were more or less let down that it had so little to do anything with the game franchise, besides the names.
      To bad though, I thought it was pretty epic ^^ and would recommend it to any sci fi fan.

    The hardest part of this is aiming without coords. its virtually impossible at 30KM, but the weapons are accurate way past there.

    Considering that 1 small block represents about 0.33 meters, it's safe to save that you were off by about 10 meters. And if the drone was a large ship, it would be closer to 20+ meters off.

    Dood, this is the greatest potential workshop item I've ever seen for any games!! It looks so awesome and the fact, that you hit a pretty small ship over a distance of ~30km and absolutely SHREKT it with a projectile without any explosives is really fantastic.. please make some more videos about it! Show us the maximum damage it can deal to bases or very large ships.

      Some good suggestions, I will try to show off all its capabilities, damage, new ammo types, how to effectively use it and how to effectively defend the base from such an attack, if that is even possible.

      What type of blocks used in projectile, blast armour blocks are another great block this type of weapon & could use rotors to attach additional fragments, giving a narrow spread to negate near miss results, creating a micro lotus

    Using the remote control block to centre the cannon is a great idea. I do feel like you could extend it further though by using the remote control block on the ballistic. This would home in on the target with perfectly accuracy and deliver a deathly blow. You don't have to do this, it was just a thought I had.

      I stumbled across you guys before creating this ship, I saw the whole 40 minutes of testing and experimenting the two of you where conducting. And all I could think of was how to improve the accuracy and that I wanna fire twice the distance. The whole ship was based around that very idea : )

      I am also still currently improving this cannon, I managed to get maximum accuracy, even at ranges over 500 kilometers, hitting targets on the surface of planets, but the piston and rotor bugs are making life difficult atm.
      And thanks, I wonder how your ship will look. Guessing it will be a pure vanilla build?

    Warheads will blow up from defensive fire even if the exterior armour is not breached.
    Arm your ballistic with blast door 'pillars' in the front, and if you want to sacrifice a little bit of accuracy for further impact damage, let a rotor spin 4 'arms' with blast doors.
    This will basically grind your ballistic through more layers of armour before it disintegrates itself through impact.
    Also it looks cool.

    Experiment with the center of thrust and center of mass, putting them in different places could help the computer get a steady shot instead of slightly overcorrecting.

    Maybe a variant that would launch a salvo of ammunition with a slight spread to hit targets. I was messing around with a couple orbital ships with mounted torpedos though there was a dispersion of around a kilometer. Maybe with programable blocks one could create a script to track a moving target and fire , though there is about a 6 minute travel time to the ground from 40km. A projectile made out of blast doors would be effective against heavy targets.

    Wow..... it's so impressive so see how realistic your weapon works! And even though the bullet isn't that dangerous, it still can make lots of damage! I've got 2 questions for you:
    1= how do the grinders ''know'' what they have to do?
    2= can such a bullet reach the surface of that planet?

      1. The grinders know what to do, because I set them up in a sequence.
      You can do this by means of timer blocks.
      What happens here is that when you press "fire", what it really does is activate timer block one, which in turn triggers several functions such as, extending the pistons and activating "timer block 2" then timer block 2 is delayed for X seconds, x meaning any amount of seconds. And then timer block 2 has its own set of instructions, such as turning on the welders and projector, and timer block 3.
      Timer block 3 has also a delayer and then when activated, turns on the grinders, retracts the pistons and activates timer block 4, and nr4 activates the gravity generators etc.
      In short: I am activating timer blocks that activate more timer blocks.
      And each activate other stuff in the mean time as well.
      Another example is a timer block activating itself, you can activate itself and say make a piston reverse.
      Like this you can make the piston go up and down, and you can alter the speed of that by the time delayed on the timer block.
      2. If you wanna see more about this cannon, and even a orbital strike on real planets, as well as shooting from 500 kilometers on a surface target, check out my video called "space snakes" in that, I do exactly just that : )

    wow, that thing is awesome. especially the accuracy. if this thing was to be fired on a specific house of a city on the planet it would maybe hit the neighboring house but probably not. it's very likely to hit the exact house that you want to hit. really great.
    and with 12 million kg it's actually pretty lightweight for such a big thing. my mining ship is probably about half the lenght and much more sleek and weighs about the same when it's empty and about twice when it's full. but then again my mining ship has the exterior made out of heavy armor (because it's supposed to burrow through asteroids) and obviously needs to be able to store a lot of material. and another thing is that it's not solely constructed as a mining ship as it has 4 refineries on-board which help to save space (at least a tiny little bit) by refining a few of the mined materials into ore while travelling to the next asteroid.

    with one of the recent updates, batteries spawn with some charge, you might find them a cheaper option than reactors for your projectiles :)

      That is a really damn good point, I did not even think of using solar panels and or batteries.
      If I could charge the batteries really fast, before the shell is fired, it could run on a single battery. The movements needed is minimal, unless it is being fired from an angle in which case more expensive ammo types are needed anyway.

      +XallZallRising Batteries as soon as they are built they have a 30% charge but for balance if you grind or salvage them you only get scrap metal back

      Omg thank you so much for pointing this out, now I recall this being mentioned somewhere before, I completely forgot about the 30% charged when constructed. This eliminates the expensive reactors and need of uranium.
      The energy needed is minimalistic. Gah I feel silly now. But thanks to you, all new shells for the upcoming upgrade of this ship will be battery based.

      : D Thanks man, I am working on new shell types. Only thing preventing me from making large progress is the piston and rotor bug, making testing of the new shells rather difficult. Every so often I fire, or for no reason at all, the pistons and rotor heads vanish o.O
      I managed to hit from 500 kilometers away as well. I wanted to actually release this Wednesday, but it was not possible. I hope tomorrow we get a bug fix patch.

      +XallZallRising your design is genius especially the targeting system. One word of caution (or advice) is that I've noticed with high velocity projectiles in space engineers is that sometimes the bullet passes through an object before the game registers an impact causing the bullet to phase through. On the other hand this can be used to your advantage because you would be able to have a bullet phase through a large amount of armor in which the game would eventually register the impact and cause large amounts of internal damage, sometimes with no entrance hole.

      A very good point. I did notice that the impacts were smaller then what I expected. I will try firing again with normal speed settings.
      I been really trying hard to get a new video out on this ship presenting new ammo types and a record distance shot, 500 kilometers, but the rotors and pistons are an absolute disaster atm, the heads of the pistons and rotors vanish for no reason. I hope thy fix it today so I can continue making progress.
      I love the feedback all of you guys are giving me, there has been great suggestions and recommendations that I can't wait for to try out.

    To fix the lighting issue, try increasing the radius on the lights, it will make them light up a larger area.

    When I get the game, I am building a cannon I have planned that is twice the size of this, and can target both planetary targets and large ships, and uses railguns as it's main weapon

      I would not advise it, it was reaching the point of being somewhat laggy. Exceed 12.000 blocks and you get lags, and I have a pretty high end computer. I'm just saying this to spare you the trouble, as I attempted to build the Nostromo from the movie Alien, but had to scrap it because it got to large to the point where it would seriously make the game lag so much that it was unplayable.

    The lights would be more effective if you messed around in there settings. They have brightness, distance, etc settings you can change.

    It's because of orbital strikes that I decided to build underground xD
    And it also save the trees :)
    (I used missiles launcher on a rotor to drill a nice circle in the mountain) after that Voxel hand is your friend to clean the rest and create more space to build.
    But I have to rebuild it once again because of the update.... the base wasn't "flat"
    Good luck destrying me from orbit xD

      Chances are that you will be safe : )
      Not being spotted is the best defense. However if the scouting drone does spot an underground base, depending on how deep it is, if it is not to deep, it is still in danger.
      However if you ever make the mistake of turning a beacon or antenna on, chances are that you will be spotted sooner or later.
      But a Orbital Cannon or anything for that matter, will not have really a chance of doing anything against you, no land vehicle, no plane, nothing really, if they cannot spot you.
      Maybe in the future we will get some sort of Radar to detect buildings and such.
      For now, the best Radar we have is limited to 50 meters, that being the sensor, which could detect you, if it flies over you, but it offers a way to little search area. I hope they will add in some sort of Radar : )

    Is everything here actually Functional. I mean the gyroscopes... Are they there to look cool or are they actually necessary.... Are there actually a certain number of them that you need in order for the ship to function properly? If so then this game is extremely deep, even deeper than I originally thought.

    I think you should have made it so a projectile is always in the chamber, and when you start it up it fires the round and constructs another one immediately for the next time, the speed of the rounds firing overall would be the same since its doing the same process but it would have a shorter time between starting up the missile system and the impact of said missile on target

      I made allot of progress already, I just have an insane amount of difficulty making interiors without mods, so I am struggling with that stage, the exterior is 90% done, the firing mechanisim is also around 95% complete. Just the damn interior design >.

      When you press "k" to open up the menu, search in the tabs for GPS, you can create a new one from there. The GPS will be placed where you stand or in case of being in a ship or in a drone where it stands.

      You either need someone to infiltrate, or a drone to bypass turret defences...
      There should be a way to laser designate coordinates.
      Something to measure distance and orientation from a ship would do, since you can add to your own coords.
      We really need a laser telemeter. :(

      I very much want that. Which is exactly why I choose to use drones to get the GPS, otherwise I would have went with a laser telemeter. But even with that, the issue remains is that you can only see so far. So the drone becomes your eyes. Any base with enough defenses can take out the drone. So the only way to increase the chance of getting the GPS coordinates is to make the drone more armored and faster so that even though it might get destroyed, it still has given the GPS coordinates.

      +XallZallRising i built an anti ship missile. it's whole job was to get close, then launch a bunch of decoys which will distract the turrets long enough to impact. there's also a multi warhead varient.
      it's big and ugly but it wrecks shit real good. also good for tagging GPS to jump in a MOAB

      Thanks man, I been continuing working on this, and am trying to hit a target 500 kilometers away at the moment.
      The maximum range for Antennas ^^
      I only shot once so far, around 200 to 500 meters off target @500 kilometers. So I'm looking for ways to increase accuracy.
      One shot traveling at 300 meters per second takes around 20 to 30 minutes to reach the target xD

      You can of course reduce that time by flying closer, but it takes a long time firing from the maximum distance due to the speed limitation. I can tell you one thing though, if it hits from such a range, it is really satisfying : D
      What I do is fire and put my watch on a count down. It warns me after 25 minutes, then I start looking for the shell with either the drone in survival or spectator in creative. And await the impact.

      It would be possible to put a camera on the nose of the shell, that would require however an additional remote control block and an antenna. It would make the shell expensive to produce in survival, in creative it would be no problem.
      However, I seem to lose control after 50 kilometers of the shell fired. So we could see up to 50 kilometers and then lose the signal.
      I could bypass this with a laser communications dish, but that would be even more expensive.
      But in short: it is possible.

      well... if you could get the Geostationary orbit right, and the angle... it could work, i mean, at that point you don't even need continual thrust once it got into the atmosphere... Accuracy from orbit is always an issue, look at Star Wars orbital strikes and such, always spread like an artillery strike. so maybe if you had more than one barrel and you were firing mutiple rounds...

    I think the moving parts are the problem with the accuracy. They slightly move the ship, too. And on that distance, already a small change in direction makes a difference.
    "we don´t want to move the ship at all" and a few seconds later "the camera rotates out of the way"... THAT and the pistons are the problem.

      +Aracnah Also another big problem with actual planets would be the gravitational pull. the projectile would do an arc. Without having seen the inspirational video, I guess that is the reason why they missed.

      I been firing with the planets update.
      Even with this method, which is a bit old compared to my new one, I been firing at ground bases. Currently off target by 10 meters. But I already found ways to get the bulls eye at any range.
      I will release a video about it when it is done.

    All in all awesome build, looks nice and good precision, but i think you can make it a bit better if you experiment with some slight tweeks. I say make a heavy armored projectile, fill it with loads of warheads, but you said that yourself anyway =) get rid of thrusters and/or gyros on it, they could actualy divert the flight path and make it less acurate in this case. Also the rotation of the 'telescope' can cause the ship to move slightly so try using the gps autopilot after you move it to the side. You can also have a shortcut that turns off all gyros and thrusters when you are done aiming to make it impossible to move the ship with the mouse...

      And indeed, I read this from a couple of people now and I am working on these ideas. Your in for a surprise in the upcoming update, especially in the ammunition selection. From cheap basic light block shells to guided cluster bombs capable of hitting literally bulls eye at 500 kilometers.
      I managed to hit targets at 500 kilometers with solid shells in space conditions. Explosives are proving to detonate and blast the ship in half. Looking for a way to fix that.
      And hitting surface targets is not tested yet. Working on that as well atm.
      Good idea with the turning every essential component off to avoid moving the ship.

    I don't have any experience with programmable blocks, but could it be possible to get the coords of the target and your own gps coordinates, make a vektor out of it and set it as target for autopilot?
    With this you could burn away from the target while actually getting the cannon perfectly aligned to it.

    Would it be possible to mount purely direction thrusters on the space station, so that it does not move forward while aligning in autopilot? That way you could leave autopilot on and it could track moving targets too.
