Any idea why the standard cluster without the gauges has two illumination wires? Also does the wiring diagram that you posted also work for the Monte Carlo and Malibu?
I just stumbled across this video. I am very grateful that I did because I am taking a rally gauges out of a 1978 elcamino dash, and i'm putting them into a 1980 Malibu Classic with a 502 Big Block Chevrolet.
I’m currently in the process of swapping a ‘95 Silverado gauge cluster into my ‘79 El Camino. This video really helped show what I needed to start with. Thanks
Great Video Brian. My 80 Cutlass Supreme did not come with a clock from the factory, but I noticed while replacing lights in my cluster that it had the wiring harness in place for the clock and had power to it. I went to the wrecking yard and found a car with a clock and the correct wood grain trim piece with the cutout for the clock. I purchased the clock and the trim piece and installed them. Easy upgrade since the wiring harness was already there and hooked up.
***** Yeah i did the same on my 80 cutlass back in the day. Many options are plug and play if the wires are there. Courtesy lights are another plug an play upgrade. Same with trunk release.
Great video very informative. I remember doing this on my cutlass and I found it easier but took my time with it, to take the harness pins out and relocate them using the ralley harness as a guide.
Great video! Do you know if the screw holes on the green plastic housing are in the same position from the standard granny cluster to the rally cluster??
I just picked up a rally gauge, excited to install it in my 88 cutlass supreme classic. Do you know if the cluster needs power in order to reset the trip?
Hey love your channel is there a way I can install a inside door handle inside the 1979 cutlass Calais without taking off the door panel? and a way to diagnose why a electric window stopped working??
How did you handle the shift indicator? The rally gauge cluster you show does not have the shift indicator. Can you swap that from the original "granny pack" cluster? I am finding the rarest of things is a rally cluster from '86 - '88 that includes the shift indicator with "OD, D, 2, 1". What you show is a pre-'86 cluster with only "D, 2,1". Those '86 - '88 Cutlasses had some very weird option packages. Like cruise control with no tilt steering wheel. Or power locks without power windows. Another weird (and very rare) was the Brougham package (pillow-top bench seat, column-shift, & rally gauge/wheel package). Ahh...the '80's. Gotta love it!!
I try to follow along in this video but my 84 was a Chevy swap when I got it and everything has always been sketch and out of place ever since I got it.
What's up GMan, appreciate all your Videos, good work.. I got a quick question, I have a 84 El Camino, and my question is,,, I only feel the air comming from the floor, how do I get the air to blow from the vents??? We're should I start looking?? You think I have a bad vacuum leak?, bad diafram? I'd appreciate some G Body advice... Keep on keepin on with the Videos. Thanks.
carwasher420 Yep a vacuum leak. Start at your source of vacuum which is your engine and make sure your lines are good going to the vacuum bubble which is your source for the vents.
i started doin this. interesting how he skips removing 37 bolts and completely disassembling gauge cluster to get it out. cuz mine wont just pop out...how does the gearshift marker which sits vertically in a horizontal slot get removed w/o disassemling gauge cluster?
Please follow my dash removal video found in my Gbody How To Play List. You will need to remove the dash in order to swap a dash harness. Once the dash is out then it is easy to remove the old harness and swap in another.
Can you post a video on how to connect the cable that’s behind the speedometer cluster to the gear shift that shows park, reverse, neutral, and drive? Some one tried to explain to me how to do it but a video would really help. I have a 84 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham with a steering column gear shift.
Sometimes the cable breaks or the plastic tab breaks. You then have to remove the cluster and there are two 7mm hex head screws that hold the gear selector in place to the cluster, Remove them and find out what happened. The other end of the cable fishes through the dash down to the column and clips on the column sleeve. You need to remove the vent bezel under the column to see it. I can do a video but won't be for some time. Hope this helps you in the mean time.

You need the entire cluster with housing and then you need the correct main plug from the cluster so you know how to re-pin your main plug to work with the gauge cluster. Swapping sensors is the same as in this video.
Hi I just did the swap but havining problems with the oil pressure switch my old one has 3 wires. And the switch has 1. Do I splice all wires together or use 1 wire? Ifn1 wire how do I know which is the main.
Was following the video everything was going well until I went to put the rally cluster in. It looks like the speedometer is not lining up. The white plastic piece is in the way of the new one. So apparently the old one and new one don't line up when it comes to the Speedometer. I am going to try and take the rest of the back black part off to see if that can be adjusted. If you have anything on that, that might help it would be appreciated.
if the 78 malibu has the gauge package and you are just swapping the gauges it will work, if the malibu has only the speedo then you mus swap the entire housing and dash harness.

Will this swap work on a 84 Buick Regal?
Cutlass gauges will not swap into a Rega.
Classic G-Body Garage Ok, is it the wiring thats not compatible or...?? I ask because the bottom cluster is exactly like my Regal cluster.

Eduardo Santibanez join the Classic Gbody Garage Facebook page. A lot of knowledgeable people there.
Where can I find a wiring harness for 79 malibu?
The diagram? trying to replace with custom auto meter gauges.

You can still use factory gauges.
Any site that I can get get it hooked
diesel?
how much for a rally setup
moneymike785 $150
Doesnt seem that bad at all . Just need to locate some non-dummy sensors Lol .
Rockauto would have them
I am looking for a Rochester 4-Barrel mixture adjusting tool to adjust the dwell on a '84 Cutlass Calais. Can anyone help me? Bob Koniar
+Robert Koniar Try NAPA they still carry a lot of carb tools. I have bought my mixture adjustment tool there.
+Classic G-Body Garage I checked with NAPA. The, only, tools set they have is for carb adjusting on the bottom & sides. I need the tool to adjust the MMC - Mixture Control Solenoid located on top toward the engine.
So what if your doing the opposite I want to remove the rally cluster and switch it to the standard cluster
Autometer has a direct fit replacement for the Monte Carlo

Do everybody know where i can get new Gauges mines are 34 years old 😔 lol 😆
why new ones? They usually don't go bad, just things go wrong. check out my other video on how to repair them.
Who cares about the rally package? Its the last of the muscle projects available. I think the old gauges look more period correct! Add a drag racing tach if you want to make it a street machine!
Factory gauge cluster is best. Don't want a massive tach
Do you know the part number for those sensors
Can easily be found on RockAuto
