      Any idea why the standard cluster without the gauges has two illumination wires?
      Also does the wiring diagram that you posted also work for the Monte Carlo and Malibu?

    Great Video Brian. My 80 Cutlass Supreme did not come with a clock from the factory, but I noticed while replacing lights in my cluster that it had the wiring harness in place for the clock and had power to it. I went to the wrecking yard and found a car with a clock and the correct wood grain trim piece with the cutout for the clock. I purchased the clock and the trim piece and installed them. Easy upgrade since the wiring harness was already there and hooked up.

      ***** Yeah i did the same on my 80 cutlass back in the day. Many options are plug and play if the wires are there. Courtesy lights are another plug an play upgrade. Same with trunk release.

      You must remove the door panel to do any work like that. Test the power to the motor, if there is 12v then the motor is bad or the switch

  • @chrislaswell5572

    How did you handle the shift indicator? The rally gauge cluster you show does not have the shift indicator. Can you swap that from the original "granny pack" cluster? I am finding the rarest of things is a rally cluster from '86 - '88 that includes the shift indicator with "OD, D, 2, 1". What you show is a pre-'86 cluster with only "D, 2,1".
    Those '86 - '88 Cutlasses had some very weird option packages. Like cruise control with no tilt steering wheel. Or power locks without power windows. Another weird (and very rare) was the Brougham package (pillow-top bench seat, column-shift, & rally gauge/wheel package). Ahh...the '80's. Gotta love it!!

  • @dogbyte555

    It would appear that the rally cluster is intended to be used with a center console floor shifter. I don't see any PRNDSLs on it.

    Can you post a video on how to connect the cable that’s behind the speedometer cluster to the gear shift that shows park, reverse, neutral, and drive? Some one tried to explain to me how to do it but a video would really help. I have a 84 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham with a steering column gear shift.

    • @ClassicGBodyGarage
      @ClassicGBodyGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes the cable breaks or the plastic tab breaks. You then have to remove the cluster and there are two 7mm hex head screws that hold the gear selector in place to the cluster, Remove them and find out what happened. The other end of the cable fishes through the dash down to the column and clips on the column sleeve. You need to remove the vent bezel under the column to see it. I can do a video but won't be for some time. Hope this helps you in the mean time.

    Is that car or was that car a true diesel? I have never seen one in Canada. Diesel that is. I have had quite a few Chevy's over the years. I never did own a 80's G body. The closest to a g body I owned was my 1978 Chevy Impala 2 door with the wrap around rear window. I owned that car for many years and I did a lot of things to it. I installed a 383 stroker, A built up turbo 400 and installed a Ford 9 inch rear diff just to handle the power. It was a heavy car but also a fun car. I had a toggle switch under the dash connected to the electronic ignition so no one could steal it. Well I thought anyways. It was stolen about 1 month after I had the turbo 400 rebuilt for the second time. The transmission shop were the only ones who knew where the toggle switch was. About 2 weeks after it was stolen, the police found the car minus the engine and trans in a back alley many miles from my home. Someone from the transmission shop needed it more then I did I guess. I was pissed to say the least and was out $10000.00. I got the shell back, threw a 350 and a turbo 350 from a junk yard into it and sold it. I was not going to go through this again. Sorry for the long story but the 1970's through the 1980's were some of my favorite Chev's.

    I dunno why didn't NHTSA outright ban these granny style clusters and mandated tachometers instead. This is what should've been done in response to the oil crisis instead of the ridiculous 55 mph speed limit and 85 mph speedo.

    How do you remove the speedometer cable from behind the cluster?

    • @ClassicGBodyGarage
      @ClassicGBodyGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clip on the back side. You need to unscrew the cable from the trans and the small bracket that holds it to the master cylinder. You need slack on the cable first. Remove the cluster and the cable slack comes with it, then push the tab on the back of the cluster.

      You need to swap out the entire gauge housing for a Malibu/Monte and also repin the plug. Swapping the sensors and adding the tach harness is the same.
