  • This video will show you how to install a set of gauges in a car. This is a three gauge set consisting of the oil pressure gauge, water temperature gauge and the volt gauge. The gauges fit into a bracket that is bolted to the bottom of the dash.
    The oil gauge consists of a plastic tube that connects from the oil gauge to a connector fitting in the block, which is located in the back of the motor.
    The temperature gauge has a wire that connects from the back of the gauge to a sensor that is screwed into the block.
    The volt gauge connects to the positive (switched power) and a negative ground.

    pre-setting that little brass compression fitting, outside first, is such a winner in what could be a fiddly mistake to ruin the function of the gauge, thanks for that tip, among many others here!!

    I'm 14 and have been working on old cars for about 3 years and your video are helping a lot with little that I don't know or understand yet thank you. If you where wondering I mess with mopars and chevys I have a 1977 k20 and a 1970 Plymouth Duster with big block in it. I started working on cars at 14. My brother and I took off every bolt that we could get at on a 1950 Chevy. My dad was pissed off. I wanted to start driving at 16 so they would not pay for anything but would teach us now to fix everything on the car including the body work and painting. I was lucky.
      Go for it. You will save thousands over the years fixing your own cars.

      I have a hard time to believe you hence. You do not know how to drive yet, and not old enough to get insurance under your name. Just, because you have a truck and a car does not mean legally its yours, unless your name is on both of those titles. Which I hardly believe, a DMV or Motor Commission Center will issue one, hence you do not have a driver license, nor you are old enough to get a permit.

      On a Chevy engine, it is way in the back behind the distributor, hiding.
      You have to remove the oil pressure sensor in the block and that is where you install your adapter and connect your plastic line. If you can get a copper line at the hardware store it would be better, it will last forever.

    Use shrink tubing for electrical connections - never black tape (it will dry out over time and slide off the connections exposing the wires to shorting out or causing a fire). Also, when passing wires or tubing through the firewall, use a grommet to protect the wires and tubing from sharp edges and vibration, never black tape for the same reasons. Shrink tubing and grommets make for a really well done install, one your customers will really love. Black tape looks ugly and sloppy on somebody's cherished muscle car. I may be a "shade tree mechanic", but my customers always come back to me

  • @lomgshorts3
    @lomgshorts3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Use shrink tubing for all your solder joints, they will not slide off with engine heat like black electrical tape eventually will as it dries out.

    ok you did a pretty good job on doing everything. but i was wondering in the beginning of everything on why you had drilled a hole and did not install a rubber grommet to the fire wall to protect your lines hoses and connections??? this would have been better to do than taping up your wires. just a food for thought.

    Is there a reason why they didn't make the temp gauge wire removable from the gauge end? I saw it is a larger wire, Obviously with a spade connector on the gauge end you could have just run it from the engine bay through the grommet with the other wires into the cabin then clip it to the gauge. You wouldn't have to worry about drilling another large hole in the firewall. Obviously, there is a good reason for that type of connector. Oh well... Great video. Thanks!

      If it's anything like Auto Gauge then there is a small sticker on the back of the temp gauge that says absolutely do not remove the line from the gauge because it will ruin the calibration.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Gabriel Hernandez There are no stupid questions. If you are asking, it means that there are several others that want to know but are afraid to ask questions. The green fluid is prestone (anti freeze) and not water, other manufacturers use yellow. It is recommended not to just run water because water causes rust. The prestone helps in the winter to stop freezing and helps in the summer for cooling. The older cars recommend more then 50/50 fix but the new cars require less. Each car is a little different. Check the owners manual or call the service manager at your local Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Honda, etc., and ask them. Evey better, ask your local auto parts store.

    I wonder why you did not use tee's to install both of the gauges (new and car gauges)?
    I put both in so that I have a back up warning so that when someone drives my car and does not watch gauges they still have the warning lights to tell them that there is a problem. Unfortunately there are many drivers nowadays that know nothing about gauges, but understand warning lights.
    I also have used the electric gauges and done the same as I do with the pittock bulbs and like the ease of installation that they provide in the newer cars with very little room for anything that you add for safety.

      I had one but I did not use it for a long time and the batteries died. When I went to buy new batteries they were more expensive than the drill, so I am back on electric. It is a pain sometimes but it always works.

      I don't like the flat black. Moon gauges where made in Oklahoma, USA. I have an old 70 Chevelle, might as well keep it American. Now I know I made the right choice.
      Some Comments on the Harbor Freight website:
      =====
      I don't even have the installed yet and having issues , tightened up the
      temp gauge and the sensor broke , I have never had that issue ever.
      ======
      amp and oil gauge worked temp gauge cable was broke off at sending unit
      was not worth taking it all back off to take it back to the store, makes
      me wonder of the quality of other products.
      ======Water Temp Gauge had Metric Fitting, so that gauge was useless.
      =======I bought these to mount on my tractor. They work great. They are a
      great deal for the price, and they have held up well under heavy use and
      vibration on my tractor
      ==========
      Installed on a 1971 case backhoe. Installation went smooth all parts needed were included. Amp guage doesnt work but the hoe dosent charge either.
      =======
      I'm repairing and driving an '83 f150 and I want every little bit of
      info on what's happening under the hood; I feel this set gives me a
      critical view into my machine and it does so without costing an arm and a
      leg. As to the ⅜" fitting, look for a brass weatherhead ½ to ⅜" fitting or
      buy a brass plumbers ½" to ⅜" bell housing and a 1¼" x ⅜" threaded
      nipple, which worked like a charm on my 4.9l inline six!
      ==========
      Easy to install. Temperature gauge screws into engine in place of the
      old gauge sender or dummy light sender, and oil pressure gauge has
      tubing that connects to a fitting you screw into the block that takes
      place of the factory oil pressure sender.
      ===========
      If you wanted, you can upgrade the plastic/nylon tubing for the oil
      pressure gauge to some copper tubing that won't wear out and leak after
      awhile. The temperature gauge just has solid copper "line" that
      transfers the heat to the gauge. No actual antifreeze flows through it.

    Appreciate the video. Don't you wish to arrange the cluster toowards the driver so that the gauges can be easier to see by eliminating parallax errors? I never trusted "idiot lights" because by the time they light up on the dash cluster, the damage is already done and you feel like an idiot for trusting them. Oil temps on engine and transmission are important to know, besides oil pressures and water temps. Mechanical gauges are more reliable than electronic measurements when the computers go bad. An hour meter on a truck is a useful item, too.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not think about the location when I installed the gauges.
      When I was a kid, I had a 57 Chevy and the oil light light came on. Then the engine stopped for good. If I would have had gauges, it would show low oil pressure and I could have shut it off before it killed the engine. Live and learn.

    WARNING These gauge install vids are ALWAYS done on old cars for a reason. The newer the car the less likely it is that you will find gauge ports to access for install of after market gauges. CHECK BEFORE BUYING.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That way you would get a warning with out glancing over all the time. Most of the time, the gauges never move. But the temperature gauge is good for me because I have factory A/C and sometimes I have to turn if off the A/C when the engine temp gets to high, when it is super high outside. I let it cool down and then turn it back on again.
      What do you want from these old cars - 1970 Chevelle Malibu? Still fun to drive.

    • @modeljetjuggernaut4864
      @modeljetjuggernaut4864 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      so if you had to do it all over again, would you still hook up the oil or voltmeter? I think I would like the voltmeter because I doubt the GEN light on my 70 Lesabre works. I was driving and didn't realize I was running primarily off my battery until it died. Never had a GEN light, and I know the bulb works because it comes on with key in accessory position.

    • @davidlis6709
      @davidlis6709  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To do it over again, I still like all the gauges but I would go the the hardware store and get a copper tube versus the plastic one I installed for the oil gauge. Who knows if the idiot lights work. I don't think mine work because they have never come on.
