I'm just wondering why people want to attach the power bank at the back of the steam deck, just put it down. If you feel restricted, then buy a longer cable. I think it's good enough.

Haha I think the same thing I mean when you charge ur mobile you don't wanna attach the power brick on that so why the steam deck plus the power brick gets hot while charging ur device so why would you wanna attach it to the back where ur steam deck needs to have air. You have such a great point glad it's not just me thinking that lol

Agreed, just put it in your pocket and use longer cable. Let your body carry that extra weight.

Convenience, mostly. You can get some pretty slim power banks. And it's easier to carry 1 device versus 2 and a long cable

    Some clarifications from the comments:
    1. My unit may have a thermal problem that can be corrected by replacing the thermal pads and thermal paste
    2. The game resolution in the game CAN be changed. Before launching the game, go to Properties -> General -> Game Resolution
    Thanks for letting me know!

I'm using my Deck mostly for commute and it's basically a teleport device for me as I just press the button and the next station is my destination. And this is exactly the reason for me against ROG Ally, where you just cannot switch it off and then start from where you left it (including cut scenes) like on Deck - ROG Ally doesn't have reliable sleep mode which kills it as a portable device for people who want to use on the go. Plus ROG Ally not even close to the modifications available for SteamDeck - from custom community controllers layouts and all the way to the 1200p screen, hall-effect joysticks and custom casing.

I have the Ally and I switched the sleep mode to hibernate instead and it works from starting where you left off. Been doing quick 15 minute sessions at work and it's been fine so far. It crashed once, but I always save before I have it hibernate.

    • @nathanlamaire
      @nathanlamaire 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

You need to use hibernate mode instead of sleep on Ally. On the restore state can be less ideal since it's longer process but it works.

As a almost 34 year old the steam deck got me into pc gaming. As a bonus i got to put various systems from my past on it as well thanks to emulation i honestly can't complain about what it is. Hopefully the next version will fix some of the issues the first gen has like you mentioned perhaps battery life and no longer having a border with a much better screen.

I said similar things on my channel. The reason that the Steam Deck was useless for me is because every game that I play on the Steam Deck could be played on my laptop which is also a portable device that I could take everywhere. And of course, I could do a ton more things on my laptop CONVENIENTLY a keyword. And I tend to like old games. I don't need a SUPER powerful system to play those. And even if I want to play new games, my laptop could still handle it. So, I'm planning on selling mine.

I have a killer gaming rig, but I play my Deck way more. Laying down /playing away from a desk/ having to do something mundane/ socializing/ - while gaming can not be understated. The suspend feature alone is a God send to the people who have children or are constantly interrupted for any reason. Plus it's Valve.

💯 agree with the retro use 👍 Mine arrives Monday and will be my raspberry pi replacement that's been sitting in a box. This will be my new retro depository that will let me easily play the classics again! I have no intention of playing new AAA titles on this, so will be happy playing older games that look great & get hours of battery life out of it.

I never mind the fans at high speed. I can tune them out pretty easily. Plus, I mostly play docked so AAA games (at least from the previous gen and older) are still very enjoyable.
I played and beat Red Dead 2 entirely on the Deck and loved every minute of it, but I can definitely understand if people feel differently based on tolerance, patience, and quality preference.
I'm also a big fan of portability in gaming, so the fact that I can play an abundance of high quality games anywhere I want at such a low cost is incredible to me.
If you haven't already, and you decide to keep the Deck, definitely check out the ability to optimize it to get the best experience out of every game, with stuff like proton and cryotuilities, among others.

I think god of war runs just fine on the steam deck I dunno why you have an issue with it tbh. I love the steam deck I use my pc for cod but every other game I play on my steam deck it's just nice to be able to sit on the sofa and watch TV and play games at the same time and honestly I think the price of the steam deck is a steal I got the 64gb and upgraded it myself I love that that's an option where it isn't on the ally and honestly the price of the ally I'd rather get a pc. The steam deck isn't just get for people that are use to pc and isn't scared to tinker but it also is great for a person that just wants to play cozy games and the community is amazing and are willing to help. You don't see that kinda thing for the ally. Plus steam are constantly making improvements and customer support is pretty good too. I highly recommend the steam deck to everyone that's my view on this but thanks for the video.

To each their own. I have a decent pc and run games at 1440p but I also work on the same PC. I do enjoy my big titles there, but at the end of the day I just prefer to stretch on my couch and play something on my steam deck for a bit. I dont even use it outside of my home. If I want to play more demanding game I may stream it from my pc via steam. As a bonus, I discovered emudeck and had a blast playing most of armored core titles before release of a new one. I am enjoying AC6 on a big screen for story missions and play it on steam deck when I want to replay a mission on a work break or before going to bed. Steam deck became my daily companion and it is helping me with my huge backlog right now.

Deck replaced my laptop. It is lighter, holds battery much better, and I enjoy the form factor. Every weekend I go to house out of town, and when I do, I find time for games, but often get interrupted. I do have easy access to charger, but we expect more power outages due to russian attacks. Planned power outages were about 4 hours each, sometimes longer. Laptop could only manage 3 hours if reading and hardly reached an hour playing indie games. Deck has no issues whatsoever pulling 4 hours playing the same games that made my laptop stutter... And all of that at same cost as my old laptop! (About 4 years old)
I have a strong PC at home as well, and I tend to gravitate to it. After workdays, I am not bothered much, too. But I intend to try game streaming from it onto deck, i can see it being comfy in winter, and making it so much easier to play old games I can't be assed to get working on deck.
Honeymoon period wore off, I do play it less. But I didn't touch the old laptop since I got it, so it fit my use case pretty much perfectly

For me, the primary factor was price. I cannot afford to build an actual good gaming PC right now, so a docked Steam Deck is both my gaming PC and my workstation (all I need is Google Docs and some very basic editing, so it's good enough for that). And after coming from being a Switch gamer for a few years, even the upscaled FSR resolutions look a lot better than what I am used to, so I don't mind that - to me it's absolute magic and I love that the game instantly looks better for a tiny cost to performance. I'm also enjoying actually being able to customize the hell out of everything, tinker with mods again just like I could when I had a PC as a kid, get all the plugins for the Deck itself, and enjoy Steam's prices instead of paying the Nintendo tax. P.S. I see a ton of people who use their Deck more even though they have a more powerful gaming PC - just to be able to play it in any room, in bed etc. Plus in that case you can just remote play the games and be unrestricted by the Steam Deck's specs at all. So it's worth considering keeping it for that.

    • @trysometech52

As for having two devices - I used to play Steam Deck in my bed before bed too, but the thing is, before I had this handheld, I used to read a book there. And I'm sure it's better to have time for both games and books. So it makes no sense to me to keep a handheld in my bedroom

I have a gaming PC, and a Steamdeck. I barely use the Steamdeck, as if at home I use my PC. When I travel I'm with my family so I don't have much interest in playing games. I bought the Steamdeck Dock 'because shiny', and hoping it would inspire me to use it more. It hasn't. I bought a PS5 controller for the same reason, it hasn't.
The battery life with the games I want to play is poor (1 to 1.5 hours). I would have taken a bigger bulge on the back for double battery life for example.
I bought a USB stick and windows to try and dual boot, but haven't got around to it.
I simply prefer to spend my time using my PC. As a 40+ that is obsessed with PCs so much my career is in IT, I thought I would love it. I just... don't... because I have other options. It even reminds me of my game gear, with massive external battery pack that I loved as a kid, but I still struggle lol.
If my job took me away, it might fit the bill, but then I suspect a gaming laptop would be better.
Your video made me try it again tonight, but I should probably just sell it lol.
Edit: Also seems silly to me to buy such a powerful device and then play real basic emulated games. May as well have bought a cheaper device at that point.

I like staying in my bed, playing video games on a smaller screen, besides that it stays better in my hand than even dual sense, I like the feeling I get, visually it looks marvelous for me, many people find it large, for me, it's the perfect size. Furthermore, I beat Elden Ring on it, 30 fps, high video quality, I loved every second of it and I spend almost, 720000 secs on the steam deck... Of course, I don't like the idea to be restricted to 30, cos I don't care so much about 4k or other higher resolutions, yet I wish I could spend at least 6 h playing Elden Ring with 60 fps without being tied to the socket. However, I love playing indie games too, like 2d platformers, metroidvanias, rogue likes and sort of, and here you can easily play 4 h or even more, which is perfect to me.

Review is alittle lop sided. Been playing RDR2, Witcher3 and some other games that are older. Playing new games is an amazing experience. Cant say I can agree with your "just get a console" for the newer games statement, because this is not what portable gaming is about. Being able to play those console games on settings that are at the same fidelty or slightly less is an amazing experience.
Also the battery is a mute point since most use bring a portable battery with them that will extend their gaming session from 2 hours to 5 or 6. More than enough. Ive been using it as my travel gaming device and its served me swimingly

      @trysometech52  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, my review is subjective and I was sharing my experience and it doesn't have to be the same as yours :)
My point was that the mentioned RDR2 looks amazing on PC. And it's just a whole other level of gaming experience playing on a large TV, even compared to a 34" monitor. That's why it's hard for me to perceive such games on a 7". So if a person plans to use Steam Deck mostly at home, a PC/console would be a better choice
But if you are happy with it, I don't mind and I'm not trying to change your mind. On the contrary, I was wondering how others use it

Sure, owning both devices is useless when you’re alone and don’t game on the go. Then you can just sit at your pc. If you have a girlfriend who doesn’t game, kids or travel a lot on public transport then having a portable device that plays and syncs the same games as your pc is super convenient. I can play my pc games everywhere I want, just as easy as picking up a book. When my kids play in the living room, I’m playing a relaxing puzzle game. In the evening, when my wife is watching a show, I immerse myself in a game whilst I set right next to her on the coach. Otherwise I have to pick to be with my wife, while she does her thing or be on my own doing my own thing. Now I can do both!

If graphical fidelity is something you care about, handhelds just arent for you.
Even powerful devices like the Rog Ally become pointless the moment you realize battery can almost completely drown in 30 minutes. Its ridiculous.
Handheld devices are at their best when you value portability to play anywhere regardless of graphical compromises.
I own a PS5, Xbox, Meta Quest 2 ans Gaming PC. And my Steam Deck is my most used device. Do games look the greatest? Heck no. But the Steam Deck opens many gaming opportunities I would otherwise never have. Play games alongside daughter or wife using the TV for some quality time? Great! Got a few minutes to kill at a long line like the Car Wash, Bank, or School waiting to pick up daughter? For sure. Oportunities that would otherwise never exist without the Deck.
Theres also the argument I work 8 hours a day in front of a desk. My idea of not fun and rest is NOT to sit in front of another desk to play games. Lying down in bed or in the couch with a Steam Deck? Much better.
