    Haven't heard that the chain should fail after 200K km on M57. I have a M57TU2 3.0 with 197 HP from 2007 that has run 354.000 km and the timing chains have never been changed. I have owned the car for the last 6 ½ year driving more than 160.000 km myself. Of course I service and repair this car myself meticulously, which is probably the reason I have not had issues. The N47 2.0 should be more prone to this issue.

      Yes it is , but it is really rarely . 90% of the time the valves bends , because they are much weaker than the connection rod . Either way , if you have bended rod most of the time , the piston will have some damage too .

    That timing chain was just a baby snapping at such low mileage, the M57 chains in a reasonably maintained engine should see 300k miles+ easily and a well maintained engine serviced every 5k miles with quality oil will see the chain outlive the car. Judging by the sludge leaking out the head at 11:37 the previous owner obviously tried to run a champagne car on beer money. I sold my 2004 e46 330d with 290k miles four years ago and it's still going strong. Sorry dude but that poor guy bought this car from a complete idiot.

I watched them all and now I do my maintenance more in detail but since I do that on my last oil change I found some small particles of aluminium and 3 small shavings in the oil filter. Engine runs as it should pulls fine starts fine no problem. Since it has 210k km would that be the case that chain is rubbing in the timing case and produce that debris in oil filter? What a bummer guys. Up till now, I can't device why BMW didn't use a decent chain in some engines. Some say for after-sale. But in my opinion they are destroying their reputation this way. But some other brands, like VAG group, acting the same way. My question, for a long time is; what price difference exists between a good and a bad timing chain? For after-sales purposes, you can put other less disastrous bad parts in a car......Dutch regards, Nico.

    @Xarior 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello, first of all, in my expirience the M57 is a very reliable beast. But only if serviced very strictly and on time. In my opinion failed timing chains mostly are a sign of neglected engine service. Another indication is a leaky engine. If oil isnt changed for a long period, oil pressure can be to high, causing gaskets to fail.
    The most important thing to improve engine life (including timing chain of course) is regular engine oil service at least every 15000 km. The original intervals are way too long because the specs for LL04 today require very thin oil. Also the additives usually become already quite used up in that range, of course this depends on your driving profile. That in combination can be fatal, because when oil is getting near its end, engine wear goes up dramatically. As for BMW, engines failing after a couple of years or above 100k km is no big deal to them, as this is no longer covered in their warranty. If the services are being not taken seriously and the oil is even longer in there than the original 30k km then that is superbad for engine wear.
    Long service intervals have been introduced mainly are because of business fleet service cars. If companies can save money because of longer service intervals, they are more likely to buy them for their fleets. Of course they change out these cars at regular intervals, so they will never suffer the backlash of this policy.
    Another big aspect: Fuel quality and regular change of fuel filter. The high pressure pump in the center of the engine is lubricated by diesel. If the fuel quality is bad and/or the diesel filter is not exchanged regularly, they may fail and so the chain breaks as the fuel pump is stuck and the engine tries to rotate further.
    My M57 now has about 300k km on it. Still first chain and no issues whatsoever. The previous owners serviced the car strictly and so did i. I even halved oil change intervals to 15k km, because of what i said earlier. Also i use oil that is not officially listed as LL04 but is perfectly suitable for my style of driving and this particular engine. I do not recommend this in general, because you need to know what you are doing then.
    Hope this is helpful to other M57 owners.

    • @crank3646
      @crank3646  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you are right. The biggest issue is the service intervals, which I have talked on most of my videos. About the OEM oils, it seems that something got wrong with them. I don't know is bad timing or not, but owners that want their cars to be serviced with it, have issues with their engines after that. I have client that have bought brand new BMW and all the services are made with different than OEM oil (not going to say which one), and the car is running strong after 200k kms, while others have major engine failures.
      About the HPFP on M57, they fail really rarely, you need to really abuse your car with strange fuel to make it fail. Most of the time they start to leak, but mechanically they last forever.

    • @Xarior
      @Xarior 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crank3646 In some countries, diesel is required to contain up to 5% Biodiesel. This is probably the main reason for fuel pumps seizing. They can really clog up with residue sometimes. I've not seen this in BMW engines so far, but in VW Diesel engines. Oil is mainly now very thin because of emission regulations. Engines are supposed to run at high efficiency and very clean, this requires basically for thin and low saps oil. You can go for mid or high saps oil, but i recommend getting rid of particulate filter then, because it would clog up very fast. Also EGR and other things that are bad for engine life. At least, EGR rate can be set very low via BMW diagnose software, for countries with legal issues about this. (e.g. german TÜV)

    • @mrsweete9065
      @mrsweete9065 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Familiarise yourself with the sound of a loose timing chain, we're lucky that on the M57 engine that the chain is at the front of the engine so you have a good opportunity to hear it. However, realistically speaking you typically know only when it's too late. The chain can literally just snap and the damage will be done so fast. If your lucky it might slack and you'll hear it, or very rare but it may get slack and skip a tooth slightly making this out of time.. Keep up oil changes about every 6k and you have a descent chance at it lasting.

I have also just bought a 2009 E70 with the twin turbo M57D30. It has an engine knock at idle and is a little noisy when under load, but the noise goes away completely when coasting/decelerating. I put it on the hoist and it sounds like it's coming from the bottom end but haven't confirmed this yet. Is it possible this could be injector noise as it goes away when the engine is decelerating? Thanks in advance

      Hello Antaris !
      It is always a good idea to check the quality of your injectors , when you buy a car like this . Yes you can see the condition of the conrod and main bearings without removing the engine . You need to remove the oil pan + the oil pump . Probably only the last main bearing will be little bit tricky because the bolts are little bit close to the cap of the rear crankshaft seal .

    is it possible on this engine just change 1 long timing chain from top of engine ? I think 2 small chains don't break often... I cannot raise the car. my engine has 240k...

    • @crank3646
      @crank3646  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is ofc , but it is not worth it . You need to remove the timing chain cover to do it , in this situation it is going to be pretty easy to change both ones ( especially if you keep in mind , most of the time , the lower timing chain fails )

    crank here is idea for you. if you create full step by step videos of your repair, with no cuts needed, you can make these videos private and sell the enter code. if you price those videos repair cheap 5-10 eur,, you can have lot of views, because these cars break all the time..haha

      It is a good point because the chain is not meant to be "load bearing". The question of why it broke is not answered. It just suggests there something different with this engine or something different happened to it. A post mortem doesn't always give a clear conclusion.

      Talk about yourself, your Balkan mentality and your ability to maintain those kind of cars. The car is not from Balkans, as you can see in the video that this is a vehicle with right-hand drive steering. The vehicle got full service history and barely reached a 100 000 on the clock. It didn’t reach the factory maintenance specification for chains change.
