  • In the world of diesel engines, we've seen a lot of interesting changes and trends throughout the years.
    But, BMW took it a step further by introducing one of the weirdest diesel engines you'll ever hear of: a 3.0L inline six diesel with not just one, not two, not three, but four turbos.
    So, today let's take a dive into the BMW B57 quad turbo engine and see what it's all about.

      To be fair, VW Group did offer an amazing 4L V8 TDI twin turbo on several models in Europe until a few years ago. And in the past, they sold a V10 TDI and the 6L V12 TDI twin turbo. In recent decades, even in North America, engines have been getting smaller on average. In the past, big V8 engines were an American classic, but now they are rare. Some of the only new cars with a V8 are, for example, the Corvette, and high performance versions of the Mustang. But those are sadly only gasoline, not diesel engines. Certain pickup trucks and very large SUVs are the only place you'll find big displacement diesel engines in the 6L range. But even GM is only selling a 3L diesel these days on new large models.

    One thing that B57 make happy is it share simillar block construction to B58. So BMW make both diesel and gasoline engine on simillar cylinder block. And diesel usually run with higher boost from the factory. Thats make B58 very strong because the block has same standard as B57 does.

    • @soundseeker63
      @soundseeker63 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That explains why they went back to the closed deck design for these engines. They need to handle the high compression ratio and torque output of the diesel versions, so are perhaps over-engineered for the petrol versions.

  • @Losingsince
    @Losingsince ปีที่แล้ว +161

    I really wonder how reliable these new high-output designs will be in the long run. The new 3.0 Duramax is especially interesting because it uses an aluminum block. Then again, the diesel engine that powered the Soviet T-34 tank also had an aluminum block and it lasted a while....

    One of my colleagues from university has a mechanic shop in which he does mostly BMW's. This 2017 750Ld came in the shop with some turbo problems. The quirky thing about it was that it was an ex-government car and it came with a 40 horsepower bump from factory. I got chauffered around on a little test drive in the most important place in that car, the rear right seat. Even with its faulty turbos, it glued me to seat and was quiet all the way up to the redline.

    6:28 the 10 injections per engine cycle thing is a staple of modern common rail direct injection diesels, basically fuel is injected gradually instead of all at once, which improves power, torque, performance when cold and emissions.
    It was actually pioneered by FIAT who patented the JTD system (jet turbodiesel) which later evolved into JTDm/Multijet and later still into Multijet 2 and 3, which is used on FIAT group (FIAT, Lancia, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Jeep and so on) diesels up to this day. This system was sold by Bosch and formed the basis for all contemporary crdi diesel engines including VW group's TDi, Peugeot group HDi and BlueHDi and BMW and Mercedes diesels

The previous N57S engine did have some issues, specially when tuned. Tuners did not understand the 3-turbo engine then and overdone it. The M550d B57S can safely be tuned to 480HP and 900NM (even 1000NM, that is the ZF torque limit). Alpine still uses this engine in the D5S, it's a real gem.

The only reason this engine is complicated on this level because it was trying to survive the Euro 6d and in the meantime it became a ticking time bomb. My 2011 335d M57 sequential turbo is a ton of fun. Quick but very expensive to maintain. I fear the infamous #1 main bearing failure though. My wife’s 2006 MB320 CDI OM648 is much more reliable. It can be “hot-rodded” to 300 hp/550 lb/ft of torque at the wheels while getting 40 mpgs.

Right now im in the process of replacing the thermostat, and swirl flaps delete. I saw a little leak from the small oil line from the small turbo. And also saw the vacuum lines are becoming brittle that also needs to be replaced. Overall the car runs excellent. I minus test all the glow plugs too before winter comes.

      @@shadowsiren3058. Couple of more things, examine the harmonic/dampener balancer very closely. If it is bad, it will take out the main bearings pretty quickly. Look for cracks in the rubber portion. If your AC quits and the charging system light comes on, it is about to leave the “chat” if it hadn’t already done so. And lastly, change the oil/filter every 5K miles. The 09s and 10s appear to have less problems than the 11s do. I think BMW sold about 10K of the 2011s versus maybe 2,000 for 2009 and 2010s combined. Since there are about 5Xs of the 2011s may explain the higher bearing failures. Some speculate that BMW may have received some faulty main bearings. Fun cars to drive though. Look up Santger Performance Development (SPD) on TH-cam. He has a 335d (probably 800+ hp) that he drives to the drag strip, runs 9s and drives it home.

    about the after market power upgrades, you can get 530hp and about 830NM from that engine with a stage1 a stage 2 where you remove the dpf would get you about 570 and almost 900NM. However that engine and its predecessor were made to make a diesel engine "feel" like a petrol engine. I personaly have the f10 m550d and its running with a stage 2 490hp 872NM for 4 years without problems though I removed the AGR, "Drallklappen" as we call them in German and did a few other tweaks to make the engine last longer. But after market wise you cant upgrade the Turbo chargers as far as I know due to the architectur of the blowing system I think am not so sure about that topic tbh...

    This is why ICE is dead. The ever increasing complexity to meet emission regulations or improve drivability makes these things unreliable and expensive. Electric drivetrains consist of a battery and an electric motor plus a simple one-speed transmission. If battery technology gets better at the current pace there is soon no business case vor an ICE car anymore.

    I think you got something wrong with the emissions regulation. It's not correct that they sacrified due to the fact that the engine is emitting more than 95g of CO2 per km. In fact most (larger) engines don't. And it is allowed to produce such engines anyway.
    In fact what counts in Europe are the over all emissions of the brands fleet. If your company fails to meet the emission goals then your company has to pay penalties.
    So many companies sacrified their larger engines - especially those which sold worst. And those two facts came together for the x50d or the 760i. Both emitted a lot of CO2 AND weren't sold very often. Combined with even stricter upcoming emission standards (Euro 7) that marked the end for this fascinating engine.
    Funfact: when I bought my G31 (btw you forgot this model in the lineup ;)) I was struggeling with myself which 6-cylinder diesel to choose. In the end I decided to go for the 530d as the 50d is faster in acceleration and that is about it. This only pro argument for me stood against higher maintanance cost, more parts that could fail, higher buying price and so on.

    How would the reliability be? It would be a disaster to fix or maintain considering there's 4 turbos. It would be smarter to have what Audi has set up or better yet have 2 electric turbos instead of 4 in a sequential set up for more reliability and lesser complexity for maintainence. That way you have that instant torque without the need of more moving components which will increase the chances of a break down. They could've also done a single turbo and single auxiliary compressor like how Volvo does it or better yet just have the same twin turbo I6 in the 50i series and attach a electric compressor. No more turbo lag but good performance.
