thanks, my light module went bad so I had no windows headlights turn signals dash lights, one headlights out one tail lights out, well this morning I accidentally held the key fob button down and two rear windows went all the way down. no way to get them up. I took off the door panel like you showed here but I unplugged the motor, and took the two top terminals on it and used my fluke voltmeter leads as jumper wires and hooked them up to a 12 volt battery booster. I got the window up. did the same thing on the second side and only took me 5 minutes from door off to door on. going to get my module fixed on eBay for $52. 2011 328xdrive, 217,000 mi and no major problems other than this.
I appreciate it, I wasn't sure how to get that vertical pull piece off.

This was an extremely helpful guide for my 2008 i335. BMW dealership wanted $600 but I fixed it for $50 in 2 hours flat. Two issues that I had: First, I was unable to push the window up to push back the clip, so I had to snip the old regulator cable. Second, the new Dorman regulator had 2 rubber pads on the receptacle that made it impossible to push it into the clip. After I removed those rubber pads, it was possible to clip it on. Thanks for the extremely helpful guide!

Thank you for this comment. I'm working on my husband's 335i while he's deployed, and you saved me multiple steps, and (I'm sure) a ton of frustration, by mentioning the 2 rubber pads.
      Thank you again!

Mine just broke right now, legit 5 minutes ago and called bmw and they wanted to charge me $500 without labor so I’m sure it would’ve been $600 total out the door, but good video definitely gotta but the part now!

I've looked at a lot of the other videos online and by far this one seems the best. Now I'm going outside to try this myself!
Ok, I did the job. It took about an hour. This video was indeed helpful. I ran into a few issues but worked around them well. When I went to test out the unit, I wanted to observe the opposite rear window in that how far down it goes into the door before it stops. Well, behold, I discovered that the left side rear window is now stuck with a bad regulator and won't budge. So once I got it all back together on the right side, confirmed it's working, I am now ordering yet another regulator for left side to do in a few days. At least now I am expert at doing this job!

appreciate the time and effort in putting this together.. I got a quote from BMW for $670... but with your help I got it done with $60. ($10 for the t20 rachet tool). And I showed my boys how to do these small things themselves...that piece was invaluable. Keep it up!

Watched this vid a couple days ago. Thank you for educating folks. Kindness like this is invaluable. My window hadn't been working, but I wasn't ready to fix it. I had a lot to do yesterday. As I was driving my window fell and then fell completely in. I ran over to a spot and the dude had an attitude while quoting me $160 just to open my door up and "diagnose" the issue. Because of you I already knew what the issue was. I went back in after 5 min and took my keys back. went to Pep boys to get tape and pliers, but then remembered the video. While in Pep Boys looking for tape, I noticed one of those suction cups lol. Went back to my whip, had a dewalt screwdriver that happened to have a torx screw adaption and I opened it up, popped the machanism off the window, because it wouldn't pull up, suction cupped it, put the door back together and I will fix it at my convenience because of you. Bam!

Thank you 🙌🏾 Thank you 🙌🏾 this video was AMAZINGLY helpful! I am a 28yr old female with no mechanical experience at all and i was able 2 complete this by myself in just 2hours. Saved my hundreds as well. My local dealership wanted $560 however i spent $80 on parts & tools and got it done myself. Thank you!

Still relevant. Changed both rear door window regulators today - original ones lasted 12 years, or 122k miles, which is pretty impressive! Now with a set of new ones, I hope to drive another 122 ;-) Thanks for sharing this video, helped a lot, and saved some money, too!

Here's a checklist summary just in case you like to have things written down to work off of.
    Tools Needed:
    T-20
    10mm socket wrench
    Phillips Screwdriver
    Packing/Duct Tape
    1) Remove wood trim panel
    2) Remove Front of handle trim panel
    3) Remove the 3 T-20 screws located under the trim panels.
    4) Starting at the part of the door near the hinge and on the lower area, slowly pop each of the tabs out that is holding the door in place.
    5) Undo the Wiring for the speaker and power window
    6) Pull out the lock rod
    7) Undo the door handle cable from the door actuator.
    8) Peel back the insulation. It looks like it’s glued to the door with roofing tar but the black stuff isn’t too sticky. Pull insulation off.
    9) Roll the window down about ½ way. Position window so catch from window is positioned in the hole of the regulator.
    10) Push tab of window catch so it disengages the window from the regulator and slide window back up so it’s closed. There is a circular hole in the glass that you have to push the tab through.
    11) Tape window in that position. Tape on the outside or it could tear your window tinting.
    12) Undo the wiring from the regulator motor. It has tabs to push to release.
    13) Remove the foam block next to regulator by undoing the 2 Phillips screws from it. Pull block out. You have to remove the block so there is enough space to pull the regulator out.
    14) Remove the 3 10mm bolts that are holding the regulator in place.
    15) Remove the regulator from the door.
    16) Put the motor off of the old regulator and attach it to the new regulator.
    17) Put regulator back into the door. Lock back into place with the 10mm bolts. I found it easier if you get the top bolt into place first.
    18) Lower the window glass back down manually until the circular hole in the glass is over the tab. The tab should snap into place.
    19) Plug the motor wire back on.
    20) Reassemble the door in reverse order of how you pulled them out. Don’t forget to put the 3 T-20 screws in like I did.

There is another version to how this job goes, I just did the rear passenger on my 330i. And it went like this.....the window was right down and would not budge, even once I had removed the covers and could try to lift it by hand. So that immediately scratches the idea of putting the window in the position where you can easily access the green plastic clip to release it from the glass. I had to undo the three bolts holding the actuator and once it was loose spend quite a bit of time moving it about while trying to access the green clip. It eventually worked, after some considerable time and effort. Ok all good from here, I thought. Put in the new actuator, very easy, but when I lowered the glass into the green holder it would not go down far enough to allow the plastic beak to click into the hole in the glass. After a whole lot more time finagling and head scratching I decided the only way it was going to work was to remove the small rubber seat the glass seats on inside that green holder. Maybe it´s there as an optional adjustment, though I doubt it. It´s made of soft rubber which the glass is presumably meant to push down into. I tried all sorts of things to make that happen but it would not cooperate. Removed it and the glass slotted right in and seems to be working fine. Which is all by way of saying that the version in the video is excellent.....just as long as Sod´s Law doesn´t kick in for you for you!!

Tip: If window is stuck, just cut the cable in front of the window motor to move the window halfway up. Excellent vid. I really liked how clearly you demonstrated how to separate the window from the regulator by depressing the tab.

Brilliant video, cheers Jack, only cost me HK$480 (US$61) for the spare part. Your'e a star!. However after re-installing panels etc the window regulator on my BMW 323i 2008 had a memory problem. Tried your way and didnt work, but discovered another way without having to dismantle again......Close all doors, turn on the engine, then hold down the window switch with window in the open position for 17 seconds at least. This will then de-initialise the memory. Now when you try to bring up window it will only go in short bursts, ie no auto up function, but it wont have the problem of going all the way up and dropping a few inches. So to re-initialise memory, hold it in the up position for about 5 seconds.....voila memory reset! Hope this works for others.

Thanks so much for your detailed video. It took me about an 1: 15 minutes because I took my time and also had to modify the styrofoam block sense my window regulator was not Factory and made a little different. All in all it wasn't a bad job. I spent $25 for the regulator and installed it myself. Not sure how much I saved compared to dealer, but I'm very very happy!

Very helpful video, thank you. One thing not shown in the video that I encountered. Before putting the regulator back into the car, make sure you lower the clip that holds the window to around the midpoint first. The clip on my regulator was at the top so when I tried to put it in I wasn't able to line up the screws.

I remember buying used E46 regulator for $80 on the forum 10 years ago. I needed one for E90 so I figured around $100 bucks for aftermarket. It was $25 bucks new. I don't know how they make profit off of that. Probably cost them $5 to make?

Followed everything perfectly and got the window to roll all the way back down, but it wont go back up. Do you think it’s the motor?

Yeah I did. I had to tighten the screws that hold the regulator in place and had to wash off the window because some residue from the duck tape that held the window up was screwing it up.

Only thing I didn't catch was why this malfunctions. Like do the cables just get stuck and stop pulling or what, especially since in most cases the motor still works.

Nice video. When you say (to reset window) that it might take a couple of times...Do you mean you may have to do that procedure a couple of times with the switches? Or do you mean you may have to roll window up and down a couple of times for it to learn the memory? My rear window needs to be reset so I appreciate your info on this video. Thanks.

By replacing the window regulator does the warning light go away automatically or will you have to take it to the dealership or local mechanic shop to reset the warning light?

Hey EmerikanESLB I'm not the one made this video and you might've figured this out already but if you were still wondering: I've done this replacement before and the warning light went away automatically :)

This video is excellent. Thank you for your help. One thing though. My e90 is a 2008. Do you think that specific regulator will be compatible or will I have to do a search?
