      I mean to be technical the compressed versions on the N64 have a lot of the higher frequencies cut off. While with most sounds it won't change much, due to how sound works sometimes removing those high pitch harmonics can cause the sound to be VERY different.

    The cannon sound was also used in Mario galaxy. I recognize the sound now that it’s so high quality.

    If y'all are having a hard time hearing any differences, I recommend getting some good headphones or earbuds. A lot of the noises can be subtle but very interesting.

    At 3:16 or so, in HQ you can totally hear that the flying sound is mostly a foley artist sucking in forcefully. Awesome.

    This is how Mario 64 would have most likely sounded like if they went with CD roms for the Nintendo 64 with the CD-Quality audio.

      Cartridges are only good for one reason; they load faster than CDs. That's one of the reasons Nintendo still went with cartridges. Unfortunately, 64MB of storage V.S. 700+ MB of storage is just too little for game data. I wonder how much compression had to be done for Resident Evil 2...

      @@enowebot_ayuk Final Fantasy 7 would have fit on a cartridge without its FMVs. Cartridges are not the enemy, and even if they were, the console has 240 megabytes of addressable cartridge memory space on top of 64DD's 64 megabyte disks.

      I don’t know if it’s necessarily good but they also can include batteries in them for game saves and stuff in without having a need of memory cards. It used to made it pretty difficult and expensive to duplicate or pirate the games since they really weren’t lenient on piracy. The decisions was also made to prevent the younger side of audience easily damaging the game with a subsequent error. Unfortunately not only did this made them lose bit of quirky third party looking forward to ride on PlayStation due to using CD that was 10x powerful and cheaper to reproduce, but this came at cost of lowering some profits Nintendo had for this decision with the Nintendo 64.

    The musics should be completly remade with the original uncompressed samples from their originals synthesizers. Some people have already done this for the DKC trilogy, some Chrono Trigger and FF7 themes too.

    Yoshi's Story has a high quality version of the piranha plant death sound, and as far as I know it's the highest quality version available. Unfortunately I don't know how to contribute it to Github.

      I know where the source of this sound is, it's even listed on the Sound Effects Wiki. I purposely EQ'd it to sound close to the original but enough to show a noticable difference. I haven't played Yoshi's Story so I wouldn't know what it actually sounds like or if it's any better, so do please show an example.

      I *think* there's now also an HQ version of King Bob-Omb's laugh in Mario Kart Tour, but I have no idea if that's the best version of that sound out there, and I don't exactly know if it's even uncompressed at all.

      I want ALL the n64 games on PC, but that's VERY unlikely to happen, unfortunately. Imagine Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the keyboard + mouse! (there are ways to do this with the emulator, but it doesn't work as good as it could).
      The Zelda games also would be awesome to have this same treatment.

    1:37 The Low-Quality cannon sound was used for memes, and the high-quality version of this SM64 sound effect was used in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and Super Mario Galaxy. Apparently, in fact, the high-quality sfx is cool

    2:02 Cannon movement sound is also longer. Part of the sound was also used for moving platforms in Quake 1. Never thought Mario and Quake would share something.

      Quake also has the sound that plays when mario enters a non-painting/wall level (like the bowser levels). In quake it plays when you enter portals

      Though Odyssey uses some sounds from SM64, all the sounds listed in this video are from SM64. The HQ versions just sound newer or clearer because they aren't compressed like the original.

      @@Replicant_ Not much, but for example the sound that playes when you collect a star in the Mushroom Kingdom is the same one found in SM64. And as @MilesBound said, the correct solution jingle is used too I'm pretty sure, but take that correct solution jingle one with a grain of salt because I'm not entirely sure of that entirely lmao. :)

    Ye, the difference is big. I know. But not a high impact as changing models, this is why I'm for stream audio. Also, some SFX in HQ doesn't look good for the properly experience.

      The original sounds had a lower sample rate, meaning the higher pitched parts of the sound weren't recorded.
      So the sounds themselves are the same pitch, it's just that the higher pitch PARTS of the sound are missing.

      7:09 Interestingly, Mario’s falling sound is lower pitch in this game. The sound was reused for Mario Sunshine where it was higher pitched when falling

    Tho can you fix some of Mario’s voice clips? Because some of his voice aren’t pitch corrected like his scream for example. His scream wasn’t meant to sound low pitched.
    Can you correct the pitch of some of his voice clips to match how they sound like in the original recordings?

    Quake and Hotel Mario have the warp sound. Not sure what your source for that one is, but I'm assuming the sample library can be found fairly easily if we look.

      Hotel Mario is an underrated and overlooked gem - a spiritual sequel to the original Mario Bros. Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon are also good.

    most likely audio had to be compressed due to the ROM disk space. probably in SDK carts had loads of space.

    some of these sounds have gotten an upgrade while others not so much. like the inside of the castle. you can hear mario having much more going on in the higher eq range but the reverbation itself did not get the same treatment. and it is stereo but doesn't spread out of the center. it's very unfortunate. I don't know if that room effect can be fixed to expand to full width but that would be a big deal.
    Other than that a lot of the other modifications are very impressive.

    Strangely enough, even though the newer camera sound is obviously much more high quality, and probably what it originally sounded like before it was downsampled, I prefer the older one. Maybe if it was muffled a bit or given some other tweaks, it could sound closer to the original while still being higher quality.

      @@robbiewalker2831 Nah, don't got that. I just prefer the emphasized lows of the original sample. When upsampled It's much more noticably high pitched. Most of the other samples are vast improvements. I love how Bowser sounds more like Godzilla when he loses.

      I don't mind the HQ sound but the old muffled one was less distracting, I would just lower the volume on that sound effect if I could
