Super Mario 64's story is something that is pretty much engraved in us. You jump out of the pipe, race to the castle, ignore Bowser, and launch into Bob-omb Battlefield as you hunt down the first star from King Bob-omb. But what if that didn't work? What if Mario couldn't get into Bob omb Battlefield? How would the entire story change if this was the case? Well, it gets a bit complex, but join me for another dose of overthinking video games as we remix the timeline from this Nintendo 64 classic!

If you /really/ wanna overthink things story-wise:
While this might be a bit of a headcanon, I would argue that the paintings are portals to actual place in the Mushroom Kingdom. Essentially, their purpose is to let Peach access places in her kingdom.
Hypothetically, if Mario were unable to access the portal paintings, I would argue what he'd eventually do is return home and book a flight or something-maybe call up Luigi while he's on it. He would then go on a more traditional journey around the Mushroom Kingdom looking for at least one star. Maybe just head on over to Bowser's castle and wreck stuff there.

@@Chillyxz It wasn't originally to Bowser's home, but he coopted those areas for his own convenience and/or set up his own paintings so he could leave easily after kidnapping Peach.
They are hazy maze cave was made by bowser and dire dire docks is also part of the real world

in the First Version you are able to Glitch on the Floor of the water outside the Castle, then you can enter the basement and complete the level

What if Bob-omb Battlefield was a 1-star door while Princess Peach's Secret Slide had no stars at all?
I think that would make more sense from a story perspective. For all Bowser knew, it was just an empty room, so why would it require a star to be opened? Meanwhile, we have the Bob-omb room, which does have a painting world that Mario could go into...yet it requires no stars to open. If Mario got just one of those stars, he'd be able to access Whomp's Fortress and take the stars there. And so on.

Sure, but that's ignoring the fact that no one can be kidnapped as much as Peach is by the same dude without them knowing the layout of their home. Bowser would have locked both doors... Besides, there's the fan theory that the "kidnappings" are, in fact, clandestine romantic escapes. In which case, Bowser making sure Mario can win makes total sense, as he only needs Peach for like 45 minutes a kidnapping.
I like the idea of Mario problem solving like a human, normally he just blindly runs through things.
As human as a 3'11'' creature that casually smashes through bricks can be.

6:30 one of the tutorial signs actually clearly states "you can't open doors underwater", so we can certainly accept the story that Mario would not be able to open this door.

Those doors are made from wood. Princess Peach might not like having some the doors smashed open or knocked off their hinges, but given that Mario would be doing this to save her, I'm sure she won't mind too much if Mario just went and grabbed a sledge hammer from a Toad Town shop or some such. And bam, problem solved. Plenty of levels to access now.
Or just punch through the door like Kyle punches through drywall since he can easily punch through solid rock like Chris Redfield.
@@kevgmei Actually you don't aim for the door silly. You aim for the lock the piece of wood that holds the door shut. (These days it's cylinder locks with pins that a credit card can swipe at if done correctly) but in those days it was a block of wood or a spring that holds the door shut when locked. There's a reason skeleton keys went the way of the dinosaur.

There are so many times I wish there were additional levels in the game. The one "night" painting on the stairs to the third floor, or even a whole new level to the castle entirely.

In line with going into absurd detail, I would imagine a better in-universe explanation for not opening the door of the moat: the pressure of the water combined with the fact it's a somewhat rusted heavy metal door.
Just think of it like how you can't easily open a car door underwater with the windows up due to the pressure against the car. Opening the windows and letting water in until the pressure is equal is how you can open the door

The easiest A press to hold without making him jump woulb have to be the very first text box.

I saw a big argument about this on the comments of another video. Apparently in Europe it's normal to have doors like that, I still think it's silly.

@@robertharris6092 Supposedly you can leave the key in the inside keyhole, and no one can pick the lock? According to my dad who came from mainland Europe, it's common to see roving bands of gypsies trying to break into everyone's house there. I once saw a scene in a European movie where a guy stole someone's house key by slipping a piece of paper under the door, poking the key out so it would fall on the paper, and pulling the paper back with the key on it, so leaving your key in the inside keyhole must be a normal thing in Europe. I guess you might also want to lock your kids in, which makes sense in theory, but in practice I don't think any parents in North America ever thought "gee, I wish I could lock my kids in the house from the inside." Some people also say that inside-locking doors used to be common in North America, but we got rid of them because they were unsafe, there were incidents of people unable to escape burning buildings or something.
My house had one of those one-way doors, ended up trapping myself in the garage thinking the door was unlocked.

Gotta say I'm impressed with your (and the hypothetical Mario's) determination to save Peach. Also kinda nice to know its possible to get on the roof and into Hazy Maze cave. Looks like Bowser's plan to switch the Bob-omb Battlefield paintings didn't work.

I remember trying to get into the waterfall as a kid... It would have been a cool world building tidbit if they let you at least see into the cave and catch a glimpse of what was to come.
I really like the concept of an AU where this scenario happens and Mario is forced to get a bit more creative and does this as his solution. I think it'd make the story a bit more interesting too, and it'd show why Mario constantly beats Bowser all the time; he really is good at thinking on his feet and coming up with solutions on the fly.

This video was so fun to watch. I like what you did by linking areas together to create a hypothetical way he could proceed.
It's not really possible from a realistic perspective for Mario to be able to open the door underwater, either. The pressure being exerted on the door by the water would be too great for him to be able to pull the door open, and even then it would flood the entire basement, making the rest of the adventure considerably more difficult as well.
But the water level is the same on both sides so no big pressure should be pressing on the door
But Mario can do anything.

You can get a star as a Goomba in Bob omb battlefield, you can use the cork box glitch to get the 100 coin star, I did it, the reason it can't be done glitchless is because the Goomba constantly has the A button held and most stars in BoB are terminating meaning you have to be not holding the A button, cloning is terminating, but if you break the cork box at the same time as it despawns it will give you the coins and respawn, this is non-terminating meaning it is possible, I have tried it successfully, I know this wasn't the point of the video but I still feel it necessary to mention.

Alright here's that one nerd that will disagree with the "unscientific" statements Mario would not be able to open the door underwater because the pressure would keep it shut with there being two bodies of water on either side
That would only work if there was a body of water on ONE side. That's why if your car is sinking in water you're supposed to wait until there's enough water in the vehicle to subside the pressure.

Go back into Hazy Maze Cave, and to the Metal Cap cave, slide down the waterfall and you're suddenly outside, walk into the front door and enter Whomp's Fortress, gameplay proceeds as normal.

The door wouldn't open because of the massive pressure difference between the flooded castle grounds and the unflooded basement. It's the same reason why emergency plane doors can only open outwards, but this pressure difference would be even bigger.
