Do write your own opera. My daughter is studying musical theatre, she has just written her 1st musical theatre show, (hoping to put it on as a student production, it's a jukebox one as she doesn't write music . Although her friend does and there maybe plans on them to work together on one.) she has also written 2 plays one more serious and one a comedy. Love your reactions to epic
I genuinely appreciate how many of the EPIC reactors have undertaken their own projects, seemingly inspired by EPIC to do so. If you end up making something, yourself, I’d definitely love to see it!
I love the way Ody just flops next to Circe on the bed to bemoan how much he misses his wife, completely oblivious to the fact that she just tried to kill him and is in fact still holding the blade. 😂 He’s just so wrapped up in missing Penelope that he doesn’t even notice. Also oblivious to the fact that she had to scooch out of the way so he didn’t fall onto her. 😂
I don't know if you do song covers, but I would absolutely love (once you've gotten through it and seen the animatics) to hear a cover of Thunder Bringer from you, honestly.
Lots of Carmen you say... well that makes sense, Circe is widely considered one of the first Femme Fatale, maybe even *the* first, in literature. Edit: In The Odyssey they make a deal (if you're not looking at a version translated from the Roman translation/version... they hated Ody for some reason). Essentially Hermes told him when he gave him the Moly that he can't truly defeat her, she's a Goddess he has to get her to release his men... so he should sleep with her when she makes the offer (her greatest weapon sort of thing). Ody agrees on the condition he and his men are allowed to leave unmolested. What follows is either Ody being a bit of a bastard or Circe liking him enough/being petty enough to place a minor enchantment on him so he and his men stay and relax for a year. At that point either Polites (who is still alive in the original) or Eury remind him they're trying to go home and he just kinda goes: Oh yeah! Time to go boys!
same!! that's what got me interested in mythology in the first place. though having not read the source materials, my head is a mess of people's interpretations but i am still loving it lol
I don't know? The book was entertaining, but for me it felt like the Circe in it was quite passive and woe-is-me? Things just kept happening to her and she just reacted to them, she never really seemed to take action on her own? I was hoping for a badass lady, and felt like I got something like that, but in a much more kicked-puppy way. It was a bit depressing to me to see her just being used by absolutely everyone around her, or discarded by them. Her relatives didn't like her, she didn't have friends, her nymphs were ungrateful little brats, Nereus, Hermes and Odysseus all used her as they pleased, so on, so on. I can't really blame who she ended up with on the book since that's taken from the classics too, but even that felt kind of like she just somehow ended up together with her ex's son, with not much agency coming from herself. Maybe I remember some story beats wrong, it's been a while since I read it, but well, it was an interesting but a bit depressing read to me :D
I love your analysis videos for Epic, because you aren’t just reacting you break down the songs and use your music background to highlight stuff I wasn’t aware of. I wonder if you’ll catch up before the epic is over as their are only 2 sagas left to be released.
EDM meets opera?! *in opera voice Yes please! This is a much different foray than what takes place in Homer's 'Odyssey' where Ody and his men are literal and metaphorical pigs taking advantage of almost every female form they encounter, *gag. I can understand Jay's decision to keep them faithful in this adaptation. That being said, the gods are just as bad *ahem Zeus *cough cough. I love Luke Holt's voice in Epic though, perfect! In fact, the opera 'Semele' is all about Zeus falling for the mortal title character...I remember working on some of her material when I was still actively training.
the Chimera and Cyclops were summoned to fight for them. Hermes warns in the previous song that she can do this. "She can conjure up a monster that'll grind you to the bones." So he offered him the Holly Molly so that he can summon "a being of your creation, all you need's imagination. though its only for a moment, 'till you've beaten your opponent." That is why Ody needed to eat the root, to temporarily give him the power to fight her. "I just ate a flower, one that claims your power." "Now you and i are evenly matched, our fates are intertwined, they're attached."
I am learning so much from these videos. Thank you so much for pointing out the tune at the beginning of 'Done For'. It's been bugging me since I first heard it why that sounded so familiar. Also yeah it goes differently in the original Odyssey. I don't remember all the details of how it went down, but he does sleep with her, and she doesn't try to stab him there.
No joke, i appreciate the Habinera Info. I didnt know it was a musical ish thing... Wait, is that what an Opera is? Odys weird guitar might be the same one at the very beginning of The horse and The Infant. Sounds the same to me. This Done For is pretty cool because the fight scene is pretty cannon. Jay shared his reference vid with us. Same goes for Circe going to stab Ody right there in There Are Other Ways.
Are you asking if an Opera is a musical? If so, the answer is no. They're both distinct art-forms from each other. Opera is like 400ish years old and developed in Italy. It was sort of a callback to the old Greek-story telling style and is very orchesteral in style and technically demanding. To this day you'll find Opera's performed in Italian due to it's roots. In an Opera the entire story is conveyed through song. Musicals are shy of 200ish years old and can have spoken lines, dance, different musical styles, and different vocal techniques (modern musicals employ a lot of belting, for example). The story is conveyed through dialogue, blocking, set pieces, choreography, and song. I'd liken it to a Ballet vs a Musical. There are strong dance elements in some musicals with distinct choreography meant to help tell a distinct story. But it's not a ballet.
Holy crap i appreciate the hell out of you. That makes so much sense! great, a new rabbit hole for me to dive into. lol! Definitely going to figure out how to see Habinera. and check out other operas.
@@yuukinoyuki9064 Hey to be honest, opera is just a posh, old form of musical xD Different style, one is classical, one is pop/rock usually, but the point is, people are dramatically performing a play through musical means in both genres :'D (There are definitely musicals where all the dialogue is sung equally, so I wouldn't say the presence of spoken lines etc is a definite distinguishing factor between the two either)
@@elieli2893 I mean, I was just giving a quick-and dirty explanation since trying to go into the singing techniques and stuff would have been a lot. Traditionally Opera was only sung-through, although I know there are more modern genres that can have spoken parts. But Opera came first, so technically Opera isn't a musical. But some musicals can try and argue they're Operas.
At the beginning of this whole thing I was not quite sure how this was going to go. But I will have to say as the story has progressed along I have truly enjoyed your explanation and the information that you have passed along on this series of videos for Epic! This has been a great idea thank you so much for covering this.
This is my favorite saga as a whole, though individual songs place higher. I believe that Circe decided to help him not because he trauma-dumped on her, but because he has the goodness and loyalty in his heart to resist her seduction (even moreso since it's been ten-feels-like-12-years).
I've seen this There are other Ways animatic several times, this is the first time I noticed the guy on the roof when the men were released. XD The legend lives!

Not me excited to see your reaction to Talya's last high note XD I'm no professional, but hers is one of the most impressive vocal performances I've ever seen :)
You gotta remember Odysseus grew up on an island and the only woman he’s ever even batted an eye at was Penelope. He doesn’t recognize when someone is coming on to him 😂
In fairness. cannon Odysseus was doing whatever it took to get home to his wife. Hermes outright tells him that he will die if he doesn't engage in her other ways. that winning the first duel will force him into the bedroom and that he MUST impress her if he wants to survive and must do more to save his men. and Calypso traps him on an island for 7 years. arguably he was raped twice. compelled into a sexual act he didn't want and wouldn't pursue for himself by another person who wields power over him. the first time to save the lives of his men. literally complying to save hostages. and the second in a way all too common even today. by being stripped of his other choices and trapped against his will by someone more powerful than him. Penelope also sleeps with a few of the suitors in the odyssey to protect Telemachus. however we rightly identify that as rape. which is not cheating. being raped or coerced into sex against your will is not unfaithfulness. here his men are hostage to a powerful witch he has no command over. winning the duel means the very power he used to win is gone. even in this continuity "but it's only for a a moment till you've beaten your opponent" the moment he says "you've lost." the power is gone. the only purpose of the duel at all is to force her to reconsider. and in her doubt she uses sex to try and find his true animal nature planning to kill him during the act if she finds it. it is him being a fairly generous lover that changes her mind. and He DOES talk to her about his wife and that he would rather not do this in the odyssey. she doesn't care. the real change in this story is that she actually accepted when he said no i have a wife. his deep abiding love and faithfulness to his family is the entire point of the Homeric poems in addition to being a general cautionary tale about getting mixed up with the gods (a common Greek theme) and the virtue and vice that both Hubris and Wisdom can be. there are other external materials that make him seem much more eager to step out on his wife. and his other son by calypso is an invention of one of those. but in homer's work itself. this is not the case. that was changed in this story yes. but allusions to the original storyline are in these songs. what do you think Hermes was alluding to when he said "deep in the night the fight last for hours you can be hurt or you can beat her?" their duel last for all of a few minutes in this continuity. that line is a reference to the cannon poems where hermes tells him me must make love to her all night long. and that if he loses control for even a moment he will be killed and there is nothing anyone can do to save him. though only a short line the song makes it very clear what the choices Cannon Odysseus faced.
He gets forced, coerced, and preyed on. Hes faithful to Penelope, and taken advantage of and cornered every time hes been intimate otherwise with someone else. When he and penelope have laid with others, it was always to save the people they love and they've never wanted or truly consented to it. A hesitant yes is still a no.
Arguably, by Ancient Greek (and their contemporary) standards, even canon Odysseus was remarkably faithful to his wife relative to “the average man” (or at least average king or warrior). He took no concubines during the Trojan war. He had no male lover. He only slept with Circe and Calypso after over a decade separation from his wife-and no assurance of her survival coupled with a knowledge (conscious or otherwise) that after he’d been gone for some time with no word, *his* death would be assumed and she’d be pressured to remarry. Even when you strip away the other factors (his desire to save his men from Circe or Calypso’s enchantments) people with the most stalwart strength of character will falter in the face of those odds and unknowns.
Hey Peter, I've been loving your EPIC reactions. You mentioned feeling inspired by this to pursue your vision of bringing EDM into opera, and I know you've reacted to K-pop in the past, so I was reminded of a video I think you would find very interested in. 24:13 And now, we as the Winions are obligated to mention that Jorge has confirmed a mistake in this lyric, Ody has been away from home for *_10_* years not 12. The lyric is supposed to be "10 long years"
Something I wonder is how much you know about accents and how they work due to your musical and vocal training. So here’s something funny: it’s actually been 10 years but Jorge made a miscalculation about the time and thought it had been 12 so when people brought this up it was already too late now oops😅
And here i am laughing manically over whats to come. Great reaction! Cant wait for the next
I love when the editor hijacks a video.
Did you notice in the flashback there were four nymphs but in the present time there are now three nymphs
An opera from you would be lovely. And you'd be starting it just in time to fill the void of Epic's production being done!
can yall imagine how much insight we'd get when he listens to the wisdom saga
I love the way Ody just flops next to Circe on the bed to bemoan how much he misses his wife, completely oblivious to the fact that she just tried to kill him and is in fact still holding the blade. 😂 He’s just so wrapped up in missing Penelope that he doesn’t even notice. Also oblivious to the fact that she had to scooch out of the way so he didn’t fall onto her. 😂
I'd be a dead man because I'm folding to Gigi's Circe in a heartbeat 😂
My heart wouldn’t even have time to beat.
I don't know if you do song covers, but I would absolutely love (once you've gotten through it and seen the animatics) to hear a cover of Thunder Bringer from you, honestly.
I’m LOVING the double feature. It flows SO well 🎉
Always love watching you react; and your MOVES when the House drops?! Need more! XD
Moly gave him the power to summon a creature of his imagination, and the strongest creature he's met at this point is the cyclopes.
I just love how the puppeteer's instrument is a string instrument
Man, I'm your editor's biggest fan lmao, he always makes me laugh with his little notes in the videos XD
I'm definitely Gay for Circe
Epic seems to really inspire people to do projects like it. You're the third reactor I've watched that wants to create their own thing
I love the book Circe.
same!! that's what got me interested in mythology in the first place. though having not read the source materials, my head is a mess of people's interpretations but i am still loving it lol
Maybe I remember some story beats wrong, it's been a while since I read it, but well, it was an interesting but a bit depressing read to me :D
at 9:08 when he said that i started thinking oooh… you’re in for a treat
I love your analysis videos for Epic, because you aren’t just reacting you break down the songs and use your music background to highlight stuff I wasn’t aware of. I wonder if you’ll catch up before the epic
is over as their are only 2 sagas left to be released.
I would LOVE to see you and Jay just talking about this stuff!
At the beginning of this whole thing I was not quite sure how this was going to go. But I will have to say as the story has progressed along I have truly enjoyed your explanation and the information that you have passed along on this series of videos for Epic! This has been a great idea thank you so much for covering this.
Done for, definitely feels like a bit of a tango
This is my favorite saga as a whole, though individual songs place higher.
I believe that Circe decided to help him not because he trauma-dumped on her, but because he has the goodness and loyalty in his heart to resist her seduction (even moreso since it's been ten-feels-like-12-years).
I am overjoyed that you immediately picked up on the Operatic elements of the Circe Saga.
Loving the double features!
Another brilliant reaction, I always learn so much coming here. Thank you so much for these.
EDM opera would be absolute fire!
Can't wait to see your reactions to the underworld saga soon.
EDM opera: Do it do it do it
Why did i just now notice peremidese on the roof with a cup of wine as the other two run out!! 😅 33:52
I think that’d be Elpenor! (or however you spell his name) he got drunk on her roof, fell, hit his head and died
11:29 I’m sure you learned in your Underworld Saga reactions that you did like… today 😅 that he doesn’t ALWAYS do this
Musically aside... A classical tragedy character opens and is humble instead of bragging, and it goes ok for them... what a concept XD
I've seen this There are other Ways animatic several times, this is the first time I noticed the guy on the roof when the men were released. XD The legend lives!
So glad you got to hear this saga at last! this may be my favorite saga, though cyclops is a close second. cant WAIT for you to hear thunder bringer. and Athena absolutely BRINGS IT in Wisdom.
I can't wait to see the following reactions :)
Earliest spot of Habanera I've ever seen! Props!
peter: *just after seeing circe take her clothing off* i love the strings, and i love the bounciness
OKAYYYYY
Hey Peter! This is my first time finding your content and I loved it!
Oh man I can't wait for you to see No Longer You. I have a feeling you'll really appreciate it
Loved the harmonies ❤
Not me excited to see your reaction to Talya's last high note XD I'm no professional, but hers is one of the most impressive vocal performances I've ever seen :)
You gotta remember Odysseus grew up on an island and the only woman he’s ever even batted an eye at was Penelope. He doesn’t recognize when someone is coming on to him 😂
Great reaction and premiere stream. Love you work. Keep it going brother.
Epic Odysseus is particularly different from _Odyssey_ Odysseus in that he's faithful to Penelope in Epic.
That on and off is actually Circe’s theme if you wanted to know
Oooooo Underworld Saga next! Yessss
ACT 1 FINALE SOON!
Hey Peter, I've been loving your EPIC reactions. You mentioned feeling inspired by this to pursue your vision of bringing EDM into opera, and I know you've reacted to K-pop in the past, so I was reminded of a video I think you would find very interested in. It's a song called Burn the Floor by Super Junior, which is an incredible blend of classical waltz, brass, and EDM that is stunning. I highly recommend the performance video, it is a work of art.
I Will Survive is the vibe I get from There Are Other Ways.
Thx for the reaction
24:13 And now, we as the Winions are obligated to mention that Jorge has confirmed a mistake in this lyric, Ody has been away from home for *_10_* years not 12. The lyric is supposed to be "10 long years"
Something I wonder is how much you know about accents and how they work due to your musical and vocal training. You mentioned that universal language (can't remember for the life of me the word) and I had to look that up for study eventually cause I love languages, so that was pretty neat to learn about.
I also would love to hear an EDM opera, that sounds dope as heck!
There Are Other Ways-good grief, Talya ❤
im really interested in this EDM opera idea lol, hopefully you can find time to work on that soon, godspeed!
