Actually he doesn't go any lower in that song than in this one. The only song where I would call Zeus a bass is the horse and the infant. The other two are more of a baritone range
@Mecha_Neko also morning makes it easier to hit low notes, it's pretty much what all bass singers do when recording really low stuff. So he likely used to also help him hit the really low notes like the Eb2 in Horse and the Infant
Fun Fact: Zeus is one of the only gods that doesn’t have his name vocally said. He doesn’t need an introduction. The thunder and lightning are his intro.
@@kasspn4631nope, he is processed by an "eagel" cry and thunder, or as here with thunder in god games ever one else gets called out, but with him he just says me, and thats enough
Fun(?) facts for the song: - Everyone was on the boat in the canon animatic. Zeus destroyed it when he killed the crew. So, Odysseus was floating aimlessly in the ocean. - As the crew is rushing Odysseus Eurylochus’ sword would’ve been the one to strike him down if Zeus hadn’t killed them first. - The tune at the very end is called “Telemachus’ Lullaby”, after Odysseus’ son. - Luke called this Zeus’ tone of voice “the prince”, like he’s putting on a front to mask the monster he is. It lasts until the very end when Zeus is killing the crew. He lets the growl of Zeus’ true nature come through. You’ll hear it better in God Games.
@ just the end part because, as Odysseus starts to fall deeper into the water, he sees memories of himself, Penelope and Telemachus, then him and Penelope
Canon aside, I would like the narrative and directive choice of Eurylochus not charging while everyone else does and him and Ody just staring at eachother while the rest of everyone is charging before the lighting hits
I love this animatic for how it depicts Zeus as truly a force you don't want to reckon with, and Neal Illustrator does great character design in general, but for the future songs it is fairly important to know that canonically this confrontation took place on their ship, and the ship was destroyed in the blast. Odysseus being adrift in the sea sets up the next time you see him
@TNJenni42 oh yeah, so many great depictions of characters across their animatic catalogue. I will always recommend Neal for confrontation scenes. But as this was the animatic that got their name thrown in the ring with the other top animators in the fan community, I do think the addendum of how it ends may be called for
13:21 i heard another interpretation of this where odysseus’ not saying “don’t make me choose” he’s saying “don’t make me SAY it” as if he is certain of what he’ll pick but doesn’t want to say it out loud.
Yeah, there is no choice and everyone knows it😂 Ody is just a little hypocrit he is ruthless in his heart from the start, je just wants to be seen as better. He does not care as much about his Crews death and having to make the choice verbaly, cause then he cant hide beeing it being out of his hands
@@SingingSealRiana Oh come on, they betrayed him, the opened the bag, they stabbed him, they don'T fuckn listen, every time they all suffer and die it is because of them not him. No one in their right mind would have choose them over one self.
@@SingingSealRiana that is not what to take from this at all lmao, its hardly hypocritical to choose to save yourself when a literal god gives you an ultimatum, people are going to die either way, sure he could sacrifice himself, but that is not "the right choice" because there isnt one, and you cant EXPECT someone to just give up his life for you
@@comandantethorn9929 yeah, especially when you just STABBED HIM and he spent all his time yelling at you not to Do The Thing that brought this doom upon you all.
Zeus wasn't being generous by letting hime choose, the point was to expose his true nature. Which was what he was ranting about in the beginning of the song
from the beginning of the musical Zeus wanted to break Odysseus, putting him on impossible situations where neither choice is right, so its not hard to choose self-preservation, but you still have to carry with the survivors guilt
I honestly love how Jay envisioned the voice of Zues having so much more to offer than just “D E E P.” And Luke puts forth this wonderful blend of depth in his voice but also elegance- and regality. He really sounds like a king.
I am always impressed by the vocals, but also by how Zeus's character is both amazingly powerful and authoritative, but also amazingly sleazy... because it fits so very well with his character in mythology!
He is soooo gross and creepy, and weirdly compelling, like this is the best portrayl of the character I ever came across, that showes both that he is worse then just a manace but also, charming enough to get why people fall for him despite knowing better
@@SingingSealRiana Yeah, I get seriously 'lawful evil' vibes from him. Creepy, knowing no one can call him on it, and happy to make sure all the laws are on his side.
Get in the Water is probably my favorite song in all of EPIC. Not because it's amazing, but because it shows just how petty the gods can be. Poseidon held onto this grudge for a decade, then gives him a threat that sounds like an ultimatum. "Get in the Water. Get in the Water. Or I'll raise the tide so high, all of Ithaca will die." "I'll take your son and gouge his eyes, that is unless you choose to die!" He's telling him to give up or he'll sink his home.
Eeeee the line “a gruesome fate to the Thunder Bringer” right into the chorus like that gives me CHILLS Luke Holt is phenomenal and Jorge’s song writing is incredible
"Here to ring your ears until you're deaf with fear, and spear you while your death is near! Lightning Wielder, here to yield your time for you have passed your prime, sublime you for your act of crime!"
I think that shows how much more cruel Zeus is in Epic. He’s already stabbing Ody by killing his crew and is twisting the knife by giving Ody an illusion of choice.
I actually heard somewhere he couldn't kill Ody anyway since it's sort of "fate" for him to return to his homeland, the question is just "when." So really this was just pure sadism by giving him the illusion of choice
Keep in mind that this in big parts Eury's fault. In the song, "Luck runs out." Ody took Eury aside and was like, "You HAVE to trust me and stop questioning me." and then Eury Opened the wind bag when they were in sight of Ithaca, because he thought Ody was hiding treasure. Not the storm that they sang about just before Luck Runs Out. This lead to Ody's mom performing an early self termination and they getting delivered right into Poseidon's hands where he killed so much of the crew. While Ody isn't with out mistake, he made plenty. Almost all of it is due to Eury's lack of trust in Ody from the beginning. Note on Neal's: They took liberties by putting the crew on the beach. In the story they were at sea and the ship was destroyed where Ody was left afloat in the ocean alone with the wreckage.
I was about to post something similar although I would also add that. This specific scenario in this song is also Eurys fault. He and the crew mutinied and Eury proceeded to lead the crew directly to killing the Sun gods cows which led to Zeus killing the crew. Literally the songs and incidents with the largest body counts (Ruthlessness & Thunderbinger) were due to Eury making terrible decisions and not trusting/listening to Ody.
To be fair, eurylochus was right to question ody, ody felt all attack seeing it as eurolyceus planting seeds of doubt but that was not what he was doing, tue Crew had already doubts ans he as the second brought them up, so ody can sooth those doubts, but ody chose not to. Odys hybris just got polites and a lot of others killed, as well as cost him his patreon and making all of them a godly nemesis . . .ody is messing up and eurolychus is worries about him. Eurolychus messed up with the wind bag and cows, but neither of those things would have even happened, if ody had not messed up with Athena and polyphemus beforhand!!! Odys unwillingness to engage with his crew is what costs him their loyality.
@SingingSealRiana How did Ody get Polites killed? Ody did everything he could have to get everyone out of that cave. But the Cyclops chose aggression instead of the Peace that Ody offered. Odys ONLY mistake in that whole Cyclopes situation was revealing his name to the Cyclops in a fit of anger after Athena struck a low blow by bringing up Polites death immediately after it happened not understanding that it would evoke some raw emotions out of Ody causing him to make the mistake in question.
@SingingSealRiana All three of the trio made major mistakes that led to the deaths of the 600. Polites started the chain by insisting that they listen to the lotus eaters who sent the crew to the Cyclops. Ody makes the mistake of revealing his name and home to the Cyclops who gets word to Poseidon who creates the storm Ody successfully barters with the wind goddess to get the storm placed in a bag but of course the Eury has to go and open it right when they get to Ithaca which leads directly to Poseidon killing 557 of Odys men then they make landfall at Cerseis island which Eury gets several of the men turned into pigs and tries abandoning them Ody successfully fixes that situation and then later Ody decides to allow Scylla to eat 6 of his men to allow them safe passage but of course Eury and the crew Mutiny and Eury is placed in charge and immediately follows the Mutiny up with making the same mistake Ody did with the Cyclops which was killing an animal without questioning the why they were there Ody tries talking him out of it but Eury again refuses to listen which leads to himself and the last of the crew getting killed
@@SingingSealRiana heres the thing, what odysseus did with Athena and Polyphemus were mistakes yes, but they had some backing, Eurylochus has no reason to distrust Odysseus after their 1st loss in 10 whole years, you gotta remember the first time they ever lost men was against a mythical creature who caught them off guard, if it wasnt Odysseus leading them, managing to make Polyphemus drink the wine and sneaking in the Nobody, and then making them blind Polyphemus, the most likely outcome wouldve been of the whole team dying and the rest of the crew starving right then and there. Odysseus ditching Athena was a logistical mistake? yeah, was he also grief-struck against an emotionless goddess who puts salt on the wound at each turn she could?, also yes. You gotta remember, the reason why he told the cyclops his name in the first place was because Athena kept trying to push him and manipulate him into doing what she thought was right, completely ignoring how Odysseus felt and what he had just gone through, the last time he blindly obeyed what a god asked of him he killed a baby, and that haunts him throughout the whole story, and in that moment he decided to take the reigns of his own life, even if just for a little moment he wanted to make his fallen friend proud.
I read a version of this in highschool. I forgot some of the events but overall had the idea that Odysseus was a hero. Through listening to this I've also been looking up the source material to see how close it is. As an adult I'm looking at events very differently. Remember first that Odysseus tried to pay insane to get out of going to war in the first place. He thought Helen wasn't worth the effort. So he's got one goal over all the years: get home. But even so some of the choices he makes show weakness of character. His pride with the cyclops is the root of most of their problems. After that he chooses the least of two bad decisions, but that does include sacrificing six of his men. So we are this idea that he's not a great man of virtue, he's "just a man". With the specifics of this choice, he warned his men. He told them what would happen. They ignored him. For him to fall on his sword for them after that is silly. I think he made the right call. Ultimately i feel like the Odyssey is (as a product of its time) a cautionary tale to know your place and follow the teachings of the gods. A warning to the people to keep the status quo and do what authority figures tell them is best.
So in The Odyssey before killing the cow Eury says something along the lines of: I'd rather risk the wrath of the gods and beg forgiveness than starve to death. Eury knew he was dead as soon as shit happened when he atked that cow. Edit: That Zeus attack was much more like "Big Bang Attack!" than Kamehameha 😝
I know it's been mentioned, but just in case you haven't seen it by now, if you remember from the last song, the crew had already rushed out to sea, trying to put enough space between them and the sun gods island, so Zeus actually caught them while they were in the middle of the ocean. So when Zeus struck everyone but Odysseus down, he actually destroyed his ship as well, sending Ody into the water, slowly losing consciousness. I would recommend checking out versions by duvetbox or theearteest on your own.
Thank you for the nerd out session from a fellow vocal nerd! The piano motif at the end is known as Telemachus' Lullaby (to pack even more of a punch in the feels). Congrats on "Styx" and can't wait to hear your take on the big guy, too!
Neal Illustrator's character design for the gods is unmatched. I highly recommend seeing all of their animatics for Epic, especially God Games. They're also currently working on "Get in the water AND 600 strike" It's going to be incredible!!
Yeah, the only real problem I have with this specific animatic is that it ends on land. If you remember the end of the last song, it makes it clear they are back on the ship and trying to row away as fast as they can. So, by the end of Thunderbringer... Ody does not even have a ship. Zeus blasted the whole thing apart, leaving only Odysseus alive. He's now adrift in the sea, possibly drowning, no ship, no crew 😄 I really love this animatic and Neal's style in general, but the choice to leave the crew on land still, may confuse people who aren't yet familiar with the storyline.
I think it was a logistical choice. The Thunder Bringer animation took like a week to slam out out and waves may have killed Neal after watching Ruthlessness lol
@@thingmate7361 Haha, I get the feeling that they are a perfectionist, of course they wouldn't be happy with half-assed waves, no, they need to make a fully animated ocean xD
Believe it or not, Luke Holt is actually more of a Tenor (according to casper fox who knows jim personally quite well), he just has great control of his lower range so he is able to pull off this Bass-Baritone part. If you listen to his speaking voice its actually quite light and nothing like what you hear in this song
This animatic is my favorite. Zeus being this massive just marble carved creature not even choosing to step down to the level of Odysseus here just showing up like he's scolding a child its just immaculate. Also I love the touch of having them simply not reach the boat like they were in a dead sprint towards the ship during the full speed ahead reprise at the end of mutiny. Also Eurylochus just resigned to his fate while everyone runs past him is such a great cap to his part in the story. Like hes finally understanding that hes been the problem this whole time. From full speed ahead and his "take what we need" perspective getting them in hot water with the cyclops, Not listening with the bag, wanting to run from Circe and the parallel between that and Scylla and finally not listening with the cow. Odysseus didnt sacrifice the crew. Every step of the way Eurylochus's pride, distrust, and cowardice killed them. Neal is also the only one ive seen that doesnt sorta... for lack of a better word, twinkify Odysseus which is definite preference imo. Its just my favorite animatic by far
Please note: if you don’t watch the live stream for the wisdom saga; it is NOT, I repeat, it is NOT in Odysseus’s point of view for the first three songs. A lot of reactors have mistook the characters and have become confused early on and have to back track. X
I'm honestly so excited about when you'll hear God Games because that just blew people out of the park with how deep Luke went in that song! And his normal voice sounds so different from Zeus 😂
Nealillustrator is just amazing, please go check her “Ruthlessness” animatic because is just *chef kiss*! Also, as always great analysis, very happy to have found this channel!
i just spent the past two days watching all of your epic reactions. i LOVE them! your insight into the music is so unique and i leave every video having learned something new. i can’t WAIT to see your reactions to the next two sagas!!!! you will have so much to say, it will be amazing! :)
Peter can we please get a Master Class where you just teach us about Music and Vocal techniques and ranges and Music Theory and everything?!?!? I know very very very little about the technical side of music but when you explain everything, it makes sense to me and I appreciate you so much for that because I am wanting/ trying to get more into singing and bettering my voice.
Something to keep in mind for the next saga (thought it won't be relevant till the 4th song) Odysseus's ship is actually destroyed in the canon events of Thunder Bringer. They were already on the water when Zeus shows up. Odysseus is flung unto the water at the end.
Oh my god ! No wonder you re my favorite reactor of all times ! I AM OBSESSED WITH princess mononoke and ghibli s piano music is just PERFECTIONNNN ! And yes i noticed that the last piano part resembles ghiblis but it s not the only thing , the first part when zeus enters is sooo much like naruto s fight battle music , it gives konoha s vibe so much
Love the reaction as always Pete! Luke has ALOT more power-belting to show off in the future, just you wait! Question about the Dragon Ball Z reference you made; have you ever seen the fan project "Legend: A Dragon Ball Tale"? It's not really anything related to vocals so it probably wouldn't fit much on here, but it is truly a love letter to Toriyama's creation, and a really fun take on DBZ's lore for an 8 minute animation! Even if it didn't become a video, I recommend it to you and any other DBZ fans in the comments. Can't wait for the wisdom saga next!
I enjoy musicals but I never understood the technical aspects, your reactions/comments make it much more easier to get and it's fun to hear your professional opinion! an overall amazing video :)
so points i like making 1. eury opened the bag causing the chain reaction, this not only is this an un waranted betray of trust mind you not only is he the captian but the king BUT also his brother inlaw (married to ody's sister) 2.he was willing to leave more than 40 men behind on circes island 3. HE was the one who told ody the gods were dangerous. but still killed a cow on an island with nothing but cows and a god statue on it.
1. I mean if you want to look at it like a chain reaction it started with Odysseus not killing Polyphemus and telling him his name, there probably wouldn't be a storm if not for Odysseus and even if there was Poseidon wouldn't have shown up to kill everyone so it would just have taken a bit longer to return (also if Eury didn't open the bag Poseidon probably would just go to Ithaca to take revenge instead). Not saying it wasn't a betrayal of trust just that I don't think you can put the blame for the chain of tragedy on him (you didn't say he's solely responsible but I have seen a lot of other people put the death of the 500 men on him). 2. It's not said in the song but I seriously doubt Eury took 40 out of the 43 men that were left to scout out Circe's island, more likely he took the minority and was willing to leave them behind for the majority that were left, especially since he had no way to know Hermes would turn up to help and doesn't know how to turn pigs back into men. 3. Fair but at that point he had pretty much given up on going home.
@@katherinesanderson8990 1.true however WE know this, but in the perspective of characters the storm could have been natural instead of divine, at that point none of the crew knew any better. 2.. again fair but once more he was more than willing to. ody at the very least wanted to see if something could be done as he stated in mutiny "it was you who left behind no man" 3. even if they gave up on going home ody warned him outright it was the home of the sun god
@@1nn3r3V1L Fair points. I absolutely don't want to insinuate that Eury did nothing wrong or always acted reasonably and I don't really want to play the blame game, I love the way the tragedy occurs bc of how the characters' flaws play off each other and that's why it could never end any other way. I'm just tired of some people using Eury's flaws to excuse or lessen Ody's.
@@katherinesanderson8990 agreed ody could have avoided the whole thing had he either killed the cyclops (as athena said) or left it alone with out giving his. granted the purpose of giving it was to instill fear and the thought that it could have been worse (atleast in epic i don't remember why he did in the source) . i also want to believe that athena some what instigated this. which is really why i love we'll be fine because it shows the growth in her character that she realized she did make a mistake.
Yessss please do talk more about vocal ranges and things of that nature. I know next to nothing about them and how you point out the different notes and explain things makes it all really understandable!
OKAY this is because I have seen too many reactors not get this. Next saga is called the Wisdom Saga, it starts with ODY’S SON Telemachus, with Legendary, NOT ODY HIMSELF pls don’t get confused pls and ty
The biggest difference between Ody with Scylla Vs here: scylla the crew didn't know that Ody was planning to sacrifice them(which he then made, unknowingly, eury do) here the entire crew was their to watch their captain knowingly sacrifice all of them
Oh, a comment of mine made it into a video😅 This is kinda my favorite song as a perfect characterisation of zeus, then the dark color in his voice even if he sings pretty light and bright cause there always is a hint of threat shining through with his classical training . . . It is just a compleatly different sound then you get outside opera and I am very partial to opera. I learned from listening to opera, making this my favorite to sing too, even if I of cause have to sing it higher, this compliments overall my voice best. He has such a nice playfulness in this whole thing I can not pull of, switching between very different styles . . . I am throughfully charmed by this, even though I fucking hate zeus, and he is an absolute monster. The soft delivery is such a deceptive bitchmove . . . He delights in torturing ody here, while presenting himself as the good guy but . . . Zeus is such an ahole but luke interprets the whole thing so skillfully and charming . . . Wo yeah, I waited for you as someone with an opera background to analyse the preformance as an unique perspective
The guitar plays the same tune as the tune that plays from 'My Goodbye' when Athena leaves Odysseus! It gives the air that Athena isn't there to intervene and give Ody her backup
ALSO Penelope singing that line from Suffering is almost 100% likely to be Zeus using his divine shapeshifting ability to coax that choice out of him! That golden light is almost ALWAYS associated with divinity even in Greek Mythology and it's same shade of yellow as Zeus' EYES in that animatic!
Also, someone might have mentioned it but still, Eurylochus in the original myths/the Odyssey is Odysseus' *literal* brother-in-law. He was married to Ody's sister
BTW, loved your reaction, loved your Zombie cover with Tegan (woukd love to hear a cover from the two doing something a bit more open and classical-ish like "The Prayer"), cant wait for your reaction to Wisdom Saga with her. She really is brilliant.
1:46 Gotta give Jorge props here. He puts a LOT of thought into the musical composition. Every character has something unique to their music, something unique to them. Just to list a few I remember him mentioning, feel free to reply with others. Zeus gets electric guitar and drums, cause god of thunder and well, thunder and lightning. Polites gets marimba. Penelope gets viola I believe (unsure). Eurylochus is always backed by the crew vocally. Odysseus’ instrument changes based on his emotion. Point is, Jorge puts an immense amount of thought into the instruments he’s using for each character. Down to the fact that Poseidon’s songs all have crashing waves in the background the entire song. Man has been a nerd over his own musical composition a lot, pointing out all the hidden details and effort.
EEEEE IM SOE XCITED TO LISTEN TO YOUR REACITON!!! *wiggles excitedly* Edit: It's always amazing listening to you nerd out about music composition and vocal techniques. Makes the videos you make very fun and interesting. Along with hearing amazing music, we get to LEARN too?! Yes please.
I usually skip when the reactors pause the animation lol but as someone who is part of a chorale singing group, your insights are so good that I didn't mind watching the video all throughout.
Ohhh yeaaaahhh i can so see this work as a Broadway play....i just hope for first run Jorge includes them original vocalusts brothers and sisters in arms. Wanna see Luke do Thunderbringer as much i wanna see Hermes on stage
😂😂😂 I fucking hate Zeus and I am aro ace but I sure have an unhealthy obcession with lukes interpretation of the character . . . Like damned, that voice plain melts me, eben though the character gives me the creeps. I sure get now, first time in my life, how Zeus managed to charm so many partners despite everyone knowing what an abysmal choice of partner he is . . . .
The first lyrics are lighting Wheeled her and thunder bring her And then afterwards it is lightning Wielder thunder bringer It's a play on words on how zeus's is a skumbag
''Thunder bring her Through the wringer Show her I'm the judgement call The one who makes her kingdom fall Lighting wield her (- not wheeled her) Use and yield her! Show her what she can't conceal for true nature will be revealed'' ''Thunder bringer here to ring your ears until you're deaf with fear and spear you while your death is near Lighting wielder here to yield your time for you have passed your prime sublime you for your act of crime''
@@SingingSealRiana in a twitch stream with him and Casper he specifically stated he is more of a tenor. He has good lower range, but considers himself a tenor, and when you hear him speak you can tell he has a naturally higher voice
If he's a tenor he's not a very good one. A proper tenor should have far higher than an A4. Seems more likely to me he's just incorrect about his voice type, same as Geoff Castellucci insisting he's a baritone
my vocal range is probably somewhere in alto or whatever the term above baritone is haven't done music theory in over a decade so i'm forgetting the order for male vocalists. but i have greater comfort and control in and around luke's baritone range than the higher registers. can still get up a bit higher but his range is my comfort zone. so singing his songs/verses are not as hard as someone like jay's highs and thanks to panic at the disco/brenden urie's song saturday night/say amen i learned i top at around b3 or b4 if i remember the notes right because i can't even screech at that note.
The song is actually a metaphor about Odysseus’ pride and foreshadowing to something in the Vengeance Saga but that’s all lll say for spoiler reasons ❤
"sacrifice yourself to save the crew?" Well, here's the thing. Tiresias said Ody *will* get home. It's as set in stone as greek prophecy gets, and even Zeus doesn't have a lot of sway there. Ody dying here was never an option, I think. He was also the only one to oppose eating the cows, the crime lies solely on the crew for this particular screw up. They'd have been dead either way, I think. The only difference that could have been made is, had Odysseus thought more properly, which I don't think he was in any headspace to do, seeing as the last time he had seen zeus it was pretty traumatic (having to yeet a baby off a wall) + zeus absolutely would manipulate and pressure ody into making the choice of sacrificing the crew (Penelope in this animatic is very zeus colored), but had Odysseus though it through, he could have denied needing to make a choice at all. Zeus *can't* kill him. The crew would still get smote, almost guaranteed, but at least Odysseus wouldn't have been saddled with that weight on his conscience. Or at least, not quite as much weight.
My only critiques about this animation is that when Ody makes the choice, the way his face is animated makes him seem apathetic/uncaring and almost smug after saying "I know." which doesn't line up at all with the way Jay says it. And the fact that they are on land instead of on the ship where they ended on the previous song :/ Not to say that Neal isn't a fantastic animator, because they totally are and I adore their God Games animatic, but truly the only things about the animatic that I would have made a different choice visually.
I have been waiting for you get here and listen to "Telemachus' Lullaby" since the saga dropped. (And you didn't even break it down, sadly) I need to know, the way it ends makes it sound different from the other saga endings, more hopeful. What is happening there? Do they resolve the chord when they haven't previously? Is it the chords used that are more for hopeful pieces? What is it? Most of the other sagas end on more of an ominious or abrupt ending, but this was the first one that seemed to end with his sort of emotion and I wanted to know what musically was different?
Last I heard, Luke Holt isn't a Bass singer! He has more of a mid-range, and his speaking voice is far from the front for Zeus! Jorge helped him lower it for Zeus' character!
The part that bothers me about this song is the crew expecting Odysseus to sacrifice himself for them after his crew stabbed him, Mutinied, tied him up, his best friend admitting that he was the one who opened the wind bag, and killed the sacred cow even after Odysseus specificly warned them that it would get them all killed! They act like he is a horrible person for choosing to save himself, but even if he isnt the best person, why in the world would he sacrifice himelf for a crew that literally just betrayed him, and had admitted to betraying him before?? 😅

Actually he doesn't go any lower in that song than in this one. The only song where I would call Zeus a bass is the horse and the infant. The other two are more of a baritone range
Luke Holt's beast mode is INSAAANE!
Fun fact: Luke recorded that right after he woke up so it would sound extra gruff and aggressive

I love this animatic for how it depicts Zeus as truly a force you don't want to reckon with, and Neal Illustrator does great character design in general, but for the future songs it is fairly important to know that canonically this confrontation took place on their ship, and the ship was destroyed in the blast. Odysseus being adrift in the sea sets up the next time you see him
I like their animatic for a later saga song. (keeping it spoiler free)
@TNJenni42 oh yeah, so many great depictions of characters across their animatic catalogue. I will always recommend Neal for confrontation scenes. But as this was the animatic that got their name thrown in the ring with the other top animators in the fan community, I do think the addendum of how it ends may be called for
BritPowwPixel has some cool animatic themes for this too. Check them out
13:21 i heard another interpretation of this where odysseus’ not saying “don’t make me choose” he’s saying “don’t make me SAY it” as if he is certain of what he’ll pick but doesn’t want to say it out loud.
Yeah, there is no choice and everyone knows it😂
Ody is just a little hypocrit he is ruthless in his heart from the start, je just wants to be seen as better.
I honestly love how Jay envisioned the voice of Zues having so much more to offer than just “D E E P.”
And Luke puts forth this wonderful blend of depth in his voice but also elegance- and regality.
I was surprised when "Get in the Water" hit lower than "Thunder Bringer" and i immediately thought "Ooo Peter's gonna have fun with this song!" lol
I have really been looking forward to hearing what Peter has to say about this since his first EPIC video.
12:38 well, Zeus in Epic was REALLY generous, cause in canonical "Odyssey" he killed Ody's crew without a choice.
The surprising thing to learn was that Luke Holt is actually naturally a Tenor, but he has a range that goes all the way down into Bass range.
Glad you picked " Neal illustrator" version of Thunder Bringer
Worth noting that in canon, this happened on the ship and the ship was destroyed. Causing him to be lost at sea.
No, zeus's attack was dropping the soap
I know it's been mentioned, but just in case you haven't seen it by now, if you remember from the last song, the crew had already rushed out to sea, trying to put enough space between them and the sun gods island, so Zeus actually caught them while they were in the middle of the ocean. So when Zeus struck everyone but Odysseus down, he actually destroyed his ship as well, sending Ody into the water, slowly losing consciousness. I would recommend checking out versions by duvetbox or theearteest on your own.

Peter: "There's my Ted talk. There will surely be more of them in this video."
Zeus: "Sure."
Ever since we got Zeus’s vocals in the horse and the infant I have been dying to see you react to thunder bringer!!
Same, now we wait for god games
"Shout out to my fellow 90s babies!"
I feel seen 🥹
Dude, I am pumped! I've been waiting for you to get to Thunder Bringer since I first heard it! Let's go!!!
Neal at least made up for it with their God Games animatic heho
I think it was a logistical choice. The Thunder Bringer animation took like a week to slam out out and waves may have killed Neal after watching Ruthlessness lol
@@thingmate7361 Haha, I get the feeling that they are a perfectionist, of course they wouldn't be happy with half-assed waves, no, they need to make a fully animated ocean xD
What’s that? A Peter Barber cover? Yes please.
Love the thicc guy and great hair appreciation!
Believe it or not, Luke Holt is actually more of a Tenor (according to casper fox who knows jim personally quite well), he just has great control of his lower range so he is able to pull off this Bass-Baritone part. If you listen to his speaking voice its actually quite light and nothing like what you hear in this song
Yeah, man has range but he’s apparently a tenor.
Zeus: "Choose. You or your crew"
Ody: "There are other ways of persuasion. There are other modes of control"
90% chance that would've worked though 😭 Zeus will go for anything with a pulse
Please note: if you don’t watch the live stream for the wisdom saga; it is NOT, I repeat, it is NOT in Odysseus’s point of view for the first three songs. A lot of reactors have mistook the characters and have become confused early on and have to back track. X
That final piece with the piano is apparently called Telemachus’s Lullaby.
I love Neal Animator's style for Epic the Musical.
Now I want to hear Peter make a cover of thunderbriger
I'm honestly so excited about when you'll hear God Games because that just blew people out of the park with how deep Luke went in that song!
And his normal voice sounds so different from Zeus 😂
He didn't actually go any lower though- he just added distortion
I love that you are getting so into it, your facial expressions show you feeling the godly power😂
I really want to hear you do a cover of this sing in full operatic voice
Great R&A, as always. The music on these is very nice.
So glad to hear that :) I try to make these videos like a music lesson with some entertainment added in
Something to keep in mind for the next saga (thought it won't be relevant till the 4th song)
Odysseus's ship is actually destroyed in the canon events of Thunder Bringer.
I enjoy musicals but I never understood the technical aspects, your reactions/comments make it much more easier to get and it's fun to hear your professional opinion! an overall amazing video :)
so points i like making
1. eury opened the bag causing the chain reaction, this not only is this an un waranted betray of trust mind you not only is he the captian but the king BUT also his brother inlaw (married to ody's sister)
2.he was willing to leave more than 40 men behind on circes island
@@katherinesanderson8990
1.true however WE know this, but in the perspective of characters the storm could have been natural instead of divine, at that point none of the crew knew any better.
2.. again fair but once more he was more than willing to. ody at the very least wanted to see if something could be done as he stated in mutiny "it was you who left behind no man"
3. even if they gave up on going home ody warned him outright it was the home of the sun god
Love your analysis (and the edits made it feel like a pop-up video with all our thoughts) ;)
The biggest difference between Ody with Scylla Vs here: scylla the crew didn't know that Ody was planning to sacrifice them(which he then made, unknowingly, eury do) here the entire crew was their to watch their captain knowingly sacrifice all of them
lol I love the editing in this video, I don’t know if there’s editors or if it’s all the same person but the conversations are fun
Mason (who also edits for Mortius, and Open Arms) is my editor
Oh, a comment of mine made it into a video😅
This is kinda my favorite song as a perfect characterisation of zeus, then the dark color in his voice even if he sings pretty light and bright cause there always is a hint of threat shining through with his classical training . .
Sounds like you need to cover this ❤❤
I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO REACT TO THIS AAAAA
I would love to hear a cover of this song PLEASE 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
YAY I’ve been WAITING for THiS!!🎉❤😅
not a 90's kid was born in 00's but toonami dragonball z is still what got me into anime toonami was the show of a generation

Alright, all caught up! Looking forward to my favorite saga, up next!
ETA: Extra props for a fellow Princess Mononoke fan!
Shoutouts to Tom on Toonami!❤
Other comments have pointed out that Poseidon gets trumpet.
I did enjoy it very much. I hope you do a cover!
The thunder ball is less kamehameha and more genki dama (spirit bomb)
Came back to this video to see it again and-
"I am a HUGE nerd"- Peter Barber (2024)
Great reaction!
Luke sings, his sound is straight, but I no longer am. It's that simple.
😂😂😂
I fucking hate Zeus and I am aro ace but I sure have an unhealthy obcession with lukes interpretation of the character . . . Like damned, that voice plain melts me, eben though the character gives me the creeps.
I sure get now, first time in my life, how Zeus managed to charm so many partners despite everyone knowing what an abysmal choice of partner he is . . . .
Haha toonami. Man that was a blast from the past. Used to stay up late to watch it.
Came for the voice analysis, stayed for the mild bi panic when Luke impressed him. We've all been there man
I developed this kinda way to sing when I was in my teens... Now im a trans woman and its a really fun reaction the one I get when I sing.
The first lyrics are lighting Wheeled her and thunder bring her
And then afterwards it is lightning Wielder thunder bringer It's a play on words on how zeus's is a skumbag
''Thunder bring her
Through the wringer
Show her I'm the judgement call
The one who makes her kingdom fall
Lighting wield her (- not wheeled her)
Use and yield her!
Show her what she can't conceal
for true nature will be revealed''
''Thunder bringer
here to ring your
ears until you're deaf with fear
and spear you while your death is near
Lighting wielder
here to yield your
time for you have passed your prime
sublime you for your act of crime''
@darkwolf9536 Yeah what he said
3:37 Zeus is a banner and odyessus and his pal is a 9❤
The real surprise is when you learn Luke is actually a tenor not a bass
. . . What?! He is a Bariton , a bad would be way lower and a tenor way way higher
@@SingingSealRianaCasper Fox (who knows him personally) has said he’s a tenor.
Hope you do the Neal God Games video!?
YEAH !!!!!
PRINCESS MONONOKE IS THE BEST!!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
The song is actually a metaphor about Odysseus’ pride and foreshadowing to something in the Vengeance Saga but that’s all lll say for spoiler reasons ❤
"sacrifice yourself to save the crew?"
Well, here's the thing.
And the fact that they are on land instead of on the ship where they ended on the previous song :/
Not to say that Neal isn't a fantastic animator, because they totally are and I adore their God Games animatic, but truly the only things about the animatic that I would have made a different choice visually.
Please do a version of thunder bringer
Actually no Zeus's lightning ball is a actual real world phenomenon which can be extremely destructive and destroy buildings if you are unlucky
Lets goooo🗣️
Imo nealls ver of Zues is tbh perfect
So….are we gonna tell him that Luke is actually a tenor? 😬😅
I have been waiting for you get here and listen to "Telemachus' Lullaby" since the saga dropped. (And you didn't even break it down, sadly)
I need to know, the way it ends makes it sound different from the other saga endings, more hopeful.
You're gonna lose your mind near the end of God Games (the ending song of the next Saga).
Also hell yeah Toonami was peak cartoon block time.
In cannon from the live stream so jorge cannon they are on the ship as well so not just the crew but he loses his ship as well
Oh i cant wait for you to react to zeus' later part
Very fun analysis. Super saiyan 3 zeus!!!
ahhhh i cant wait till you react to god games and hear what else Zeus does with his voice
Is there a possibility for a cover of this?
