    Quick thing - it's a chimera Circe summons, not a manticore. Manticore is human face, lion body, tail with some form of sting, usually a scorpion.
    And when Circe says "I have been in love once before", that was with Glaucus, but he loved another nymph and asked Circe to make him a love potion. In a fit of jealousy Circe cursed the nymph and transformed her into a monster. The nymph in question - Scylla.

    I don't see a lot of people mentioning, that in "Wouldn't you like", Hermes tells Odysseus that the power of the Moly flower is "Only for a moment, till you've beaten your opponent".
    In "Done For" Odysseus says the line "You've Lost" after beating Circe's Chimera. Its at this moment when the Moly wears off, and Circe knows this. Which is why she moves into trying to bring down Odysseus's guard in "There Are Other Ways" to try and end him and cast a spell on him. But as we see the love for Penelope is too strong even for the spell.

  • @AirQuotes2962
    @AirQuotes2962 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +330

    To clarify for the story:
    Hermes is not mad at Odysseus for not killing Circe. He actually helps him again a bit later. Also, Hermes helping him doesn't seem to have any ulterior motive in the story. Instead, it's likely because in the Odyssey Odysseus is Hermes's great-grandson, so it's a family thing.
    Also, yes, Odysseus manages to convince Circe to help them by recognizing and appealing to her better nature. She was never a full villain in the Odyssey story, she was actually more of a guide who helped Odysseus and his men before and after the Underworld. Honestly, I love Percy Jackson, but I do find it a bit annoying that Circe was portrayed as a one-off villain in Sea of Monsters. Because, like, in the Odyssey story, after everything with the pigs went down and she turned them back, she let Odysseus and his men chill and recooperate on her island for like, a year. And even after the Underworld, they stopped again at Circe's island and she gave them some directions and supplies before sending them on their way. She was way more of a help than a hinderence to them in the original story.

    While odysseus does not betray his wife here, he does betray his men. This is the first time he is explicitly putting his wife above his mens' lives.
    Circe presents him with a dichotomy(though unknowingly); "betray your marriage and save your men" or "dont, and leave your men behind as pigs", and Odysseus chooses the latter.
    He is willing to risk his life(as seen in his response to Eurylicus) for his men, he will compromise on himself. But he will not compromise on his family.

    In reference to the "maybe I'm a god like you" that Odysseus retorts to Circe,
    Circe is technically an immortal, since she is the daughter of the Sun Titan Helios (look closely back at the animatic and you'll see that Anni hid some sun iconography in Circe's apparel). Her parentage to Helios is also often cited as where her magic abilities come from.
    Odysseus' sincerity and loyalty to his wife are what win over Circe in the EPIC version of the story, as Circe realizes they are more alike than either realized and, as you said in your reaction, if ever there was a time to break the cycle of cruelty and make for a safer life for her nymphs, this is as good a chance as any.

    One of my favorite little touches: in There Are Other Ways, right after Odysseus says “I can’t!”, the violin plays Penelope’s leitmotif. Literally every time before this that someone has mentioned “Penelope”, her name is always sung as the same four notes, and the violin echoes that note progression here as Odysseus firmly reminds himself of who he’s fighting for.

    • @revenantravings
      @revenantravings 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am aware, however making those changes didn't alter Circe's actions up to the major story change. It feels strange to just out of nowhere have Circe intending to just be trying to get his guard down when the 'act of passion' IS how she originally figured out he meant no harm. If anything it leads to the sole issue I have with a project I otherwise adore - in adapting it to a modern audience and adding new themes, the original story becomes muddled. How can Odysseus 'become' a monster when he was already a war criminal that pillaged temples to keep the enemy from praying to his goddess? Let alone framing the man that forced him into the war just so he could have revenge? Is Circe capable of giving a second chance when overpowered but spared, or will she promise her body just for a chance to cut down someone already favored by at least one god, despite no notes in the song implying she meant betrayal and only the theme of ruthlessness making that apt?
      I can understand Odysseus being changed for a modern retelling, especially since the Odyssey doesn't focus on war crimes and just the consequences of pride and bad choices, but the dagger remains fanon until Jorge says otherwise, and feels wrong for Circe's character.

The opening sound (the strings) for "Alexander Hamilton" and every other "How does a..." song is a door creaking open, but in "Your Obedient Servant", the door is slamming shut. Circe is the child of a sea nymph (lower divinity) and the sun Titan (Helios) old but fallen divinity. This places her in a shaky area surrounding her divinity. She has power and her parentage is such that she exists between elements and thus can bend the physical form. If she is a full goddess or more of a lower divinity is up to interpretation, but one thing is for sure, she is NOT human

  • @SIMPLY_GJ

    In the Original Odyssey, Hermes tells Odysseus that when he points his sword at Circe, She will ask him to go to bed with her and that he's supposed to say yes in order to get his men back, its not cheating because he didn't like any of it and was obligated to sleep with her to get his men back and she realizes this therefore she decides to gives his men back and offers them to stay a year at her palace before sending them to the underworld so they can know what to do on their journey
    In Epic the musical, Circe tries to distract Odysseus by seducing him taking him to her in an attempt to kill him by using his sword and stabbing him behind his back (she's about to stab him in this part 15:22 where you can hear the "paino" noise going down scale) but before she can stab him Odysseus backs away since he was uncomfortable by the whole situation and tells her that hes trying to get back to his wife whom he loves so dearly to these words Circe realizes hes being genuine and that as you said, not all men are "pigs" and therefore gives his men back and helps them

    I have so much love for "Done For", it's an awesome way to depict the confrontation between Odysseus and Circe! The fact that neither try to hide what's at stake for them makes it all the more tense - Circe making it clear immediately that she's just protecting her nymphs and herself from intruders, and Odysseus answering that he needs to aid and protect the men under his command. The way it's revealed too that Circe is doing this for an actual reason (that she and/or her nymphs have gotten hurt before because they welcomed strange men into their home) really hits home; they got hurt before, and it has caused at least Circe herself to see men as little else than pigs. That, uh, Hermes implies that the people turned into pigs are eventually eaten is... yeeeaaaah...
    And again, once again, we see Odysseus getting cocky and not 100% thinking before he tries to bluff his way through a confrontation... The fact that he even tried to lie to Circe about having acquired the moly by himself is nnnnot his smartest moment, really...
    Honestly, the fact that "There Are Other Ways" immediately opens with Circe pretty much admitting that she's about to be deceitful - "There are other ways of persuasion, there are other modes of control; there are other means of deceit". Odysseus was... admittedly a bit distracted, let's be honest. It's implied that the power of the moly wore off very quickly after he summoned the Cyclops to fight the Chimera, which leaves him a bit more vulnerable. But he didn't even come to think about the fact that Circe would attempt to kill him when she was seducing him. The only thing that saves him is his devotion to Penelope - but even that was so tested there. "Who's to say, with the mistakes I've made, that they will be the last mistakes I ever make?" Right there he's seriously considering giving in, and then it's followed with his repeat of "I'm just a man". Classic little excuses some people give for being with someone else than their spouse, right? It does speak to his willpower that he manages to push back enough and hold on to that devotion!
    I'll never be over the fact that Jorge mistakenly wrote "twelve long years" rather than "ten years", though. His admission of that being a mistake, and then retconning that mistake into "Oh, Odysseus is trying to win sympathy from Circe" rather than it seeming like Odysseus can't math because Temptation... It's too good. It's just too good.
    Can't wait for your reactions to the Underworld saga! Especially "No Longer You", honestly!

  • @drayiskewl
    @drayiskewl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    In my head, the switch happens from when he says, "I can't"
    Circe is implied to have been hurt by men, and was only attempting to seduce Ody to kill him. Ody, despite over a decade of not seeing his wife, didn’t give in. I have a visual of her with her exposed chest, waiting for him to... have his way with her, but he, instead, takes off his little cape thing and wraps it around her shoulders to cover her chest, basically saying "this wont work on me, and because im not your lover, i don't need to see you in this way." Circe, in this moment, is overwhelmed that a man didn’t take advantage of her, let alone one she was inviting into her bed, and that's why she flipped.
    This is only my interpretation though

    So before going into the underworld saga, although you may have already, a couple of tips. In the Odyssey, Odysseus and his remaining crew stayed one year at Circe’s palace.
    Jay confirmed that the souls in the underworld sing the last thing they were thinking before they died. It isn’t a part of Jay’s musical but in the Odyssey, Odysseus does meet Achilles in the underworld. It’s not really important to the story, just a cool Easter Egg if someone has read all of Homer’s works. Also, get ready to cry! I know who Odysseus meets in the underworld, and I still cried.

    She's one of the children of Helios, the Titan of the Sun (literally the Sun incarnate) and his wife Perseis.
    That, I guess, is why in the "Done For" animatic the artists added some sun imagery to Circe's design.

During the line at the beginning when she sings "If you make one wrong move then you're done for." you can actually hear the sound of a big cat's roar in the music! It represents Circe summoning her chimera. Just like when Circe and Odysseus sing the line "You've made your one wrong move, now you're done for." together, you can hear the roar of the cyclops which represents him summoning one to fight Circe's chimera.

    On the debut livestream where they play the same clip, after odysseus says "I CANT" narration reads on the screen that circe hides the knife away without odysseus noticing.
    So circe's seduction and the "ok, I'll let your men go" was a lie and a distraction, and she was planning to kill odysseus. Only upon odysseus calling back to his wife and pleading Circe has a change of heart (probably the line "I have been in love once before" explains why)

    Just ever so slightly too early, as a full animatic was put out for There Are Other Ways like a week ago. XD Pretty wild that The Underworld Saga basically had full animatics right out of the gate. It was really just that good. Plus Jorge loves the animatics and skits people do with his songs.

    Please🙏 when you react to "No longer you" keep in mind the animation made by Krieo right now Gwendy's (which I also love) is very popular but I liked Krieo's interpretation of Tiresias words more.

    Amazingly enough, each of the "underworld saga" songs already have very complete (and very great) animatics. Considering that there are only three songs, I suggest making a single reaction video for the whole saga.
    I really enjoy your reactions and can't wait to see the next one.

    I'm glad TH-cam recommended your channel to me. I'm now all caught up on your Epic reactions and I really like your insight on the musical side as well as everything to do with Polites. We forever love our sunshine boy!
    (Also it's just nice to see another Percy Jackson fan.)

    I've just made an animatic to the second song of The Underworld Saga, with captions. Looking forward to your next reaction video none the less😁
