Honestly, I'm with Eurylochus -- I think I could take Polyphemus but I wouldn't stance a chance against Circe 😆 Early access to all Epic videos will be available on Patreon!
Exactly this. Odysseus would have been turned into lunch meat if Hermes hadn’t showed up and Eurylochus knew that. They had no idea Hermes was gonna show.
Eurylochus has an higher tone than usual because he is talking as Odissius friend and not as his second in comand, so he is more vulnerable since it’s a less ufficial scenario
Yeah, I think it's carying over from before too. Because back when Teagan was pulling double duty as both Athena and Circe, she'd use a British accent for Circe to help differentiate between the two.
Some fun facts about Wouldn't You Like and Hermes Why he might be helping: 1. Hermes is also a god of travelers and has trickster/chaos vibes, so he does tend to just give mortals magical stuff to see what happens 2. Ody is Hermes' great grandson 3. Not sure of this one but Hermes and Circe might be ex's Also, the belting at the end is actually Ody and is supposed to represent the Holy Moly kicking in and giving him some god-like power
Fun fact, that wasn't Hermes belting out during the final chorus of Wouldn't You Like, but rather Odysseus! In the canon of the musical, it's supposed to be how Odysseus is being empowered by the Moly's effects.
The guy who voices Eurylocus actually met Jorge at the Puerto Rican Hamilton auditions - neither got in - but this song really played into that bit of their history, playing to that experience and ability.
People mentioned in premiere chat, but, yes, that’s Jay. In a livestream where he presented canon visuals, after Odysseus eats the flower it says “Odysseus begins to glow. POWER UP!” Him being able to sing on the same level as a god/belt so high shows the moly taking effect
I once saw a comment under Wouldn’t you like that went as follows: “Hermes? *Demented Cackling*” That’s the only thing I think of when I hear this song.
To this day, one of my favorite details of Epic is making Hermes's motif the lyre. He invented it, then gifted it to Apollo as an apology for stealing from him. He was a kid at the time, too. Apollo got robbed by a kid and accepted an instrument as an apology. 😆
"Wouldn't You Like" has definitely become one of my favorite songs in the whole musical. It's very fun and a totally different vibe from everything else. I'm dancing the entire time and Troy's voice is just incredible. Hermes is a very chaotic god mythologically, so Jorge's songwriting and Troy's portrayal are very cool! You should listen to some of Troy's solo stuff, specifically "Unlucky Lady". It's very funky and it always puts me in a good mood!
26:18 the British like accents were a stylistic choice to make Circe and Hermes sound a bit more ethereal and other worldly 😊 (Jay also gives gods and more powerful characters electronic elements in their instrumentation for similar reasons)
33:45 it's a personal headcanon that Circe can actually hear them outside of her palace and decides to vibe with Hermes 😂 like checking out what in Hades these boys are doing in her yard or something lmao
32:46 - If a regular human character sings, the background vocals are diegetic or are present in the story. If a god character sings, they can summon background vocals out of nowhere at any time.
I'm aware of this! It's been present throughout the show. But before this, it's always been in the form of a full choir (as far as I can remember), but in this case it's just a few specific voices singing harmonies
@@PeterBarber-it definitely sounds like Talya/Circe carrying the feminine harmony to me. Others have suggested it’s Teagan. My suspicion is it would be fully in line with Hermes’ character to conjure Circe’s voice in this moment-both to troll her and further bait Odysseus.
I always enjoy Eury going into "Military Cadence"... at least that's what I call it. Also yeah you called it sooo... umm... Eury's right, she can't be killed. Technically she can get heavily disabled but not dead. Edit: If I remember right he shows up and essentially says "Athena says you need some help... so here's the downlow and a gift." Also the most accepted heritage for Ody is that Hermes is his Great Grandfather on the Maternal side.

This was a fun vid, i appreciate you.
33:28 Oh. My. Gods. Jay said that harmony is his favorite part of this saga, and he described it as "crunchy and punchy", so hearing you use the word crunch made my jaw drop.
Oh my gods. I checked Circe's Wikipedia to refresh my memory on who her parents are (there are two variations) and I saw under "Consorts" both Odysseus AND Telemachus. Obviously, that's not the case in Epic, but I found that funny. Like father, like son. 🤣

You know, sometimes people forget how messed up and evil what she does to the men considering she invited them in. Plus the fact she fed them one of the last men who was unlucky enough to end up on her island. All this said her two songs are some of my favorites

@28:32 is entirely the reason I love watching your content, your reactions are fantastic lol. And okay, not entirely, you're one of the few musical background reaction channels that actually apply your musical background knowledge to the content you're watching, and I'm all here for it
The number of times Peter has called a guitar a harp and a harp a guitar... :person_facepalming: But in all seriousness, loving the analysis on all of these, really cool to see.
Oh my god, I just realised something. I watched the following reaction first, and Peter was confused about Circe and Ody becoming creatures in that battle. And here, Hermes is literally saying "You'll manifest a being of your creation, all you need's imagination." I'd never made the connection, I feel so dumb 😅 I just thought it was a cool animatic for Done For.
Is it just me, or are the plucked notes in the intro of Puppeteer the same melody as 'Full Speed Ahead'? I heard the notes and my brain started singing 'Ithaca's waiting... and 600 men can make this whole place burn...'
So, I just noticed you can hear some of that "We should try to find a way no one ends up dead" at the start there, and then followed by some "how much longer till your luck runs out" after Ody goes "go make sure this island is secure."
I just know that if Jorge ever watches this he will be delighted that you picked up on him making the backing-vocals for "wouldn't you like a taste of the magic" /crunchy/. In the short he put out about putting that together, along with the effect he referred to it as "crunchy and punchy, like a tootsie roll" (and then started laughing right after because he has a habit on putting on voices when he explains things)
Oh, a thing I forgot to mention back in "Keep your friends close" that I was reminded of now that you said how good Talia and Teagan are: Jorge specifically advertised all his auditions as "You can audition for any of the roles no matter what gender you are" because he wanted to be absolutely sure that they found the voices he felt could best portray the characters. So Talia, for instance, originally sent in an audition for the role of Zeus. And I believe the singer of Aeolus was on a song (that was later cut) called "let me be your light" where she was voicing Polites (it was prior to the casting for the role). Another example is that I believe the guy voicing Antonious (one of the suitors) originally auditioned for Thiresias but Jorge suggested the other role as he thought that voice would fit better for that role.
"Wouldnt You Like" is such a bop, definately one i pop on during very short car rides. Hermes is one of my favorite characters solely because of how FUN & full of life he is, his god song is unlike Any other god song in EPIC, he's just a funky lil' dude
11:13 "Believe it or not I have never seen...." wHY did I expect him to say "a woman"????? I was waiting for a joke- A PUNCHLINE- and I was ROBBED nwfujia /silly
Hermes was DEFINITELY a party god lol. He probably had the most demigod kids out of the entire Olympic pantheon lol. He's pretty much the only true trickster god the Greeks had, as you can probably tell considering he was the god of thieves, merchants, and shepherds all at once. So shepherds would pray to Hermes to keep thieves away from their animals and to get a better deal from the merchants, the merchants would pray to him to cheat the shepherd and stop the thieves, and the thieves would pray to him to get away with stealing from both the shepherd and the merchant. 🤣 He was also the god of travelers, sleep, language, luck, fertility, and music. He's exemplifies the old quote "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.". He was one of the very few gods to be on good terms with everyone and shared the title of Zeus' favorite kid with Athena so he could get away with pretty much anything!
Hermes' singer Troy sounds completely different in his own music which is also pretty good, but the best is that Troy has taken on the identity of Hermes and features him in his short videos / tiktoks . XD. best choice of Hermes.
Also, Hermes isn't "creepy" in the source material. However, He is a trickster in the way fairies are said to be, very Puck-ish. He is the Traveller. He watches over travellers, merchants, messengers (and thus smooth talkers), thieves, the recently deceased on their journey to the underworld. The staff with double-twined snakes we associate with medicine is actually His, because doctors get diplomatic immunity, and ambulances travel. (Medicine has the single snake of Hermes' nephew Asclepios)
The thing about Hamilton is that Lin-Manuel Miranda doesn't put anything in without meaning. He had a few historical mistakes because he forgot about certain things that in the long run aren't entirely relevant to the show, but with the music, everything has meaning, right from the opening music. There's an insane amount of stuff to cover, so as good at noticing musical details as you are, even you won't catch everything. Not to mention the visual details.
Honestly, I'm with Eurylochus -- I think I could take Polyphemus but I wouldn't stance a chance against Circe 😆 Early access to all Epic videos will be available on Patreon!

Some fun facts about Wouldn't You Like and Hermes
Why he might be helping:
1. Hermes is also a god of travelers and has trickster/chaos vibes, so he does tend to just give mortals magical stuff to see what happens
2. Ody is Hermes' great grandson
3. Not sure of this one but Hermes and Circe might be ex's
Also, the belting at the end is actually Ody and is supposed to represent the Holy Moly kicking in and giving him some god-like power
Also in The Odyssey (which in this case has become non-canon for Epic) he shows up specifically because Athena sent him to give advice/aid.
I'm a Hellenic Pagan, and I have another reason I think he helped. He's the trickster god. He knows chaos is going to ensue, and he wants in on it. 😂
They're not exes in mythology, just in the modern book by Madeline Miller who seems to confused her for Calypso in a bunch of ways.

Is Mason editing for these vids?
I so love these!
The voices are Hermes using his godly backup vocals power to add some flair.
11:12 - I smell a crossover with Open Arms Reactions.
9:11 Maison (sorry if I I spelled it wrong) spitting facts!
He was also the god of travelers, sleep, language, luck, fertility, and music. He's exemplifies the old quote "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.". He was one of the very few gods to be on good terms with everyone and shared the title of Zeus' favorite kid with Athena so he could get away with pretty much anything!
funny you mention Barcelona, at this point in the Odyssey he is not too far from Spain.
Hermes' singer Troy sounds completely different in his own music which is also pretty good, but the best is that Troy has taken on the identity of Hermes and features him in his short videos / tiktoks . XD. best choice of Hermes.
Honestly, I hate reactors that don't pause. It drives me insane. 😂
If I remember correctly in one Greek Myth (I think an Aphrodite one) it explicitly states that women are a curse onto man by Zeus
I don't think the nostalgia is from the chords specifically, but more from the lush chords under the gently plinking piano melody.
Thank you for doing these, I really enjoy your videos. I can't WAIT for you to get to Thunderbringer and I hope you cover it.
