I totally didn’t just discover your channel, binge watched all of your epic the musical series, and then subscribed. I would never (jokes aside thought I love your videos keep up the great work)
Mr. Jorge did explain in a video once that he imagined the Sirens using their voice as a way to see memories of loved ones and such, so that they could seduce the sailors and other people into the water. But since Ody realized that there were Sirens before he got to them and had him and his crew plug their ears with bees wax, the memory seeing thing didn't go like normal. That's why there were "mistakes," like the Siren saying that he has a daughter when he has a son. Also, is it possible in future videos to check our BritPowwPixel's animatics? They are extremely good!
Dont forget another mistake of the siren was that he used polities instruments instead of Penelope because the sirens was looking for an instrument of someone he loved
So, obviously, Ody is bluffing his little Hermes-legacy heart out with the "Afraid of the water" stuff; but interestingly, a lot of good sailors going back to say the 1600s actually couldn't swim that well! I obviously don't know if the same was true anywhere across all the history we consider to be "ancient greece", but it was generally seen as - if you try and swim in the open ocean it'll kill you anyway, just be good at staying on board instead. EDIT to add: The only difference here that I can remember is that instead of stuffing his ears with beeswax, Odysseus has his men tie him to the mast so that he could hear the Siren-song but couldn't be lured. This is how he picks up the information in the original.
I LOVE that Jorge referenced his time miscalculation from "There Are Other Ways" in "Different Beast". "It's been 12 long years." "We've been away from home for about 12 years or so." (It was only a decade by "There Are Other Ways".)
Thunder Saga is SO good 🙏 Can’t wait to see your reactions for Scylla and Thunder Bringer! Your reactions are always so informative for someone who doesn’t have much of an ear for the technicalities of music
The one thing that always gets me listening to this is actually how many sailors couldn't swim (although technically they were soldiers who had to sail to the war) - even up until fairly modern day. I watched a documentary about the SS Edmund Fitzgerald the other day (which sank in the 1970s) and there was a comment there that one of the sailors on the boat had said that if ever he was on a ship that sank, he'd go down with the ship as he couldn't swim
Yeah, it's crazy to think most sailors, pitates and vikings could not swim! I mean... the vikings went around in pretty much upty canoes, man... can you imagine crossing the Atlantic like that? It's crazy.
In the original Odyssey, Circe warns Odysseus of some of the monsters he will face on his way back from the underworld and meeting with the prophet. Original story he visits with Circe again to figure out his next steps and stock up on suppplies and gets information from her before leaving. The Sirens being one of the formentioned encounters. Originally, Circe states that the men should cover their ears to not fall prey to the Siren's Call, and only Odysseus should be the one to hear them. For in Mythology, if a Siren Fails to claim a man when they hear their song, they die. Odysseus is then tied to the mast of the ship where he screams and fights to be set free to jump in the water and join the Siren's or what he believes is his wife calling to him. while the men hold him in place and continue to sail through the waters. only releasing him when he regains his composure after every last siren dies and stops following the ship. In EPIC, Odysseus does not revisit Circe and continues the voyage after leaving the underworld finding the abandoned ship. This version of Odysseus seems to know enough about the Sea of Monsters and figured out what they were and so they all cover their ears while Odysseus collects information on how to proceed forward. Following to cut the Sirens in half to show an example for the remaining Sirens to not follow them or try to call so they don't meet the same fate. In the background it's not only the Sirens screaming from being cut in half at the waist, but the sirens in the water also screeaming in terror as their friends/sisters corpses are thrown back into the sea. While in both versions the Sirens do die, EPIC has a more gruesome fate.
In the original myth odysseus is tied to the mat while his men have the bees wax in their ears. Ody hears the song, begs to be released, but his crew know not to let him go. They sail right on by leaving the sirens behind. However the myth of the sirens is that if a man heard their song and escaped the siren would die instantly. Either way the sirens didn't survive. I think Jorge made the sirens more impactful with his story.
“We’ve got a bass in our soldier’s chorus.” It’s Zeus! Joking aside it IS the voice of Zeus: Luke Holt. He’s been in the soldier’s chorus from the beginning. Really rounding out that sound.
One thing about "Suffering" that Jorge did was when one finishes a line with a vowel sound, the response starts with that vowel. "I can take the suffering from you, "Ooh, as good as that sounds, right here, I'm just fine." Another detail is Penelope's motif, the viola. It's completely absent in the song. One more is that "He will chase you high and low, so find a place he'd never go," is the same melody as "He will burn your house and throne," from "The Horse and the Infant".
The thing I like about Gigi's style for doing the Siren interaction is they often focus between Ody's eyes and the Siren's mouth as a subtle hint that he is paying attention and reading her lips.
To answer your question at 11:58 there is a video where Jay talks about how the siren's magic works. Because Ody's ears are blocked she knows that tune is important (Zeus in the Horse and the infant) but doesn't have all the context to really understand why or who. Thats why it is "awkward" for lack of a better word.
Congrats on your first house; that's exciting stuff. Now for something else exciting: how about a comparative analysis of Scarpia's "Te Deum" by different singers? Gobbi, London, Bastiannini and some other voices from the Golden Age?
I know by now you have probably reacted to the next batch, but Ill be vague for viewers sake. In the final chorus of Different beast, the crew changes up the lyrics. After his proclamation of "Let them drown" they shift from "We are the man made monsters" "He is the man made monster". They don't agree with that decision and distance themselves from the actions Odysseus is leading them on, which ties in well to the next two songs.
Iirc in the original Odyssey, Odysseus has his crew fill their ears with wax so they can't be tempted by the sirens, but he himself doesn't, and instead gets tied to the mast to prevent himself from jumping in the water, hoping that hearing the sirens song will reveal something important.
When the siren sings "he will chase you high and low" is mimic-ing the horse and the infant "he will chase you high and low" reference to the baby. I believe Jay answered that since Ody can't properly hear the siren (spoiler) that the siren's magic can't draw on his memories correctly, so she's drawing information blindly and missing the context of how it's relevant/important. I.e: he has a kid, but not a daughter, and trying to draw from previous songs without understanding their familiar context.
I love how some of the song titles subvert expectations, e.g. Monster (where I pictured a monstruous antagonist), suffering (it sounded ominous), and a song from the wisdom saga I will not name to avoid spoilers
The first line from the chorus that you hear in "Monster" is "Siren song". The rest spoil the rest of the saga, so I'll wait to comment what they are on those videos' reaction.
Jorge explained the nature of the sirens' powers as they are able to access your mind once their voice hits your ears, and that's how they know your desires. The beeswax jammed that ability, causing the siren to make mistakes (daughter, afraid of the water, etc.) Also, you mentioned the percussive elements. That's another mistake. Someone really important to Odysseus does have a motif that is a mallet instrument, just not Penelope. 🥞 It's really morbid that Polites's motif is a mallet instrument. 🤣
Animatics having the sirens cut literally in half (even excellently done ones like this) always bother me a bit. Now I've never been cut in half, I have never seen anyone cut in half, but I can't help thinking you'd die pretty quickly, certainly before you'd drown. I get that's where their tails typically 'start', but I think it makes more sense to cut off a little above their fins. The fact that they *can* drown suggests that either they're like sharks and have gills that only work if they keep moving, or they're like whales and dolphins and need to surface occasionally to breathe. Removing the fins would stop them doing either. I may have thought about siren biology a bit too much.
You know... he could of kept the sirens as offerings for scyla... unless there's something I dont know and its not possible besides possible food issues.
This saga messed me up to the point that I don't listen to it much. I'd go so far as to say it traumatized me. I've been looking forward to seeing your reaction to the context behind "Thunder!" for Gwendy's animation with Mortius and Casper 😆
In the Odyssey Ody's men use beeswax (I think it's still beeswax) but he has them tie him to the mast so he can hear the Siren's song. As he tries to command his men to let him go they follow his original orders and instead tighten the ropes to ensure he can't 'escape'.
