Brent Spiner NAILED that role perfectly, every bit as much as Leonard Nimoy did as Spock.. I loved it in the movie Insurrection when Riker shaved his beard and Data noticed it, and Riker replied "Smooth as an android's bottom!" obviously leaving Data taken aback. Later Data asked to touch his shaved face, and when he let him Data shook his head as if to say "Nope, my butt's smoother"
It took Brent Spiner time to settle into the role though - his performance wasn't always that good. In Seasons 1 & 2, for instance, he often demonstrated far too much emotional response and never really came off convincingly as someone who was trying to understand the nature of emotion. From Season 3 onwards and in the TNG movies though, he was spot on, although I'd argue that the emotion chip made Data less interesting as a character.
Honestly, I always found Nimoy's performance in general in the TOS episodes vastly overrated - the emotionlessness just felt too forced (and as you say, unconvincing in early episodes), and pretty much every one of Spock's story arcs was about him breaking out of that emotionlessness, lacking any kind of subtlety at all. The Motion Picture didn't resolve this. It wasn't until The Wrath of Khan where Nimoy's performance saw a kind of "enlightenment" - Spock became less of a character who couldn't feel emotion and more as part of a society that had made emotional action and expression a social taboo. It was sheer brilliance. Data was always supposed to be the mirror image of Spock. He's not supposed to be completely emotionless, as he needs typically human traits such as curiosity, awe and motivation to drive him to discover the other emotions and endeavour towards humanity. As I said, he didn't really keep it to those three emotions in the first couple of seasons, but he absolutely nailed it in Season 3, especially in The Offspring.
yeh, all through NEX GEN whenever they're in trouble & Data is around, i feel ok lol. *DATA = SAFETY* Mr Data Saves The Day Loads. fave moment: in FIRST C0NTACT when he jumps really far down then lands & gets hit by machine gun fire, looks up at the lady and says "Greetings". hahahaha! ….0h! also Drinking Some Alien Beverage in 10F0RWARD - "0000HHH!!!" "ERRRR! I HATE THIS!" ..."more?" …"PLEASE!" (cant remember which movie that is lol) hahaha brilliant stuff Brent mate! U-Da-Man!!! :)
He won't look at you he will simply process all the information on the Romulan society, he wll prepare for the task of impersonating a Romulan. Would you like him to discontinue?

laughing at the first scene. After Data's remark about his composition, I can't help but think to myself "Dude, you just tried to headbutt a man sized starship!"
i think the point of data's character, is that his kind of intelligence is exponential by nature and has to be bounded very difficultly in a way even data isnt so good at comprehending (damn). so, i think what the "emotion chip" does is literally upgrade data with a new loop with new principles that contain the exponential nature of experience without losing the basic complexity for the massively varied field of sensation beyond curiosity, confusion, and motivation itself.
data does feel. the problem is. he doesn't care. he does, but it doesn't hurt him. it hurts us, and he comprehends that on a level that justifies the way we feel. computers this good, need to be treated like data. they deserve it. fuck your organic fascist specism.
My dad being a huge trekkie, Data was my very first crush as a small kid. Watching 20 years later I have absolutely no regrets (and perhaps a rekindled crush)
My dad was so happy that I loved watching TNG with him when I was a little kid. He thought it was me being into astronomy and technology and stuff and that I would grow up to be a scientist, when in reality I just had the biggest crush on Data 😂
When he says, "I will not look in your direction," his gaze actually lingers, even as most of his body first turns. He turns with the rest of his body and yet glares at Picard before moving his head and his eyes away. He may be an android devoid of emotion, but he was chock full of incongruous HIGH-larity.
Brent Spiner is clearly one of the best actors I've ever seen but I still don't think his talent alone was enough to make Data such a popular character. I'm sure his personal charm and his striking good looks had a lot to do with it as well.
Definitely not....its much more than rikers, its closer to Lt. Commander argyle. The chief engineer before geordi, who had a beard, also before Riker did. He got fired when he solicited fans to write supportive fan letters to paramount. He wanted to be a permanent character but the mail coming in was about his character. Problem was the mail was received before his episode even aired giving it away. Somhe was fired...but the point is Riker copied him, not data copying riker.
His look in 8:10-8:12 is pure gold. Actually Data is pretty human here, he looks to Picard with an expression of "what type of wacko is this guy". I am not sure if this is possible for an android who does not "feel" but this is star trek universe...
Sadly he was great as data, but none of his other stuff, was any good. Night court was funny but its a side character. Seems all star trek actors have been type cast. Only good in star trek, never has to get a job again, which is good cause no one wants them. Outside star trek and Shakespeare
"I am sorry if I was disturbing you sir, I will not look in your direction" *Ever so slowly turns head like he wants to keep looking at him or he was just in the process of moving a file and was like: "But I can not leave it here while I turn around" and moved ever so slowly, because again, he wanted to keep looking. There is a fanart where Data is watching Geordi while he tries to sleep but he feels his eyes on him. Then Data says he wonders how people look like when they sleep. It was funny how he stared at Geordi
And I see you're a SuperLockian. Tell me. How is it like to be part of three shows that have the most known & shippable couples? I need a second opinion
My favorite was when a time-traveling thief/con man trapped Data in his small ship in an attempt to abduct him to an earlier time. The door could only be opened by his hand print. He held a phaser on Data, and when Data refused to follow the man's instructions, the man fired the phaser at Data, but it didn't work. In anticipation of the thief's plan, Picard had secretly disabled it. Then in his usual, cordial, matter-of-fact manner, Data said, "I assume your hand print will open that door whether you are conscious or not." AUTHOR!!
I FREAKING LOVE a scene in the episode where Data kills a Borg and for a breve moment he felt angry/ pleasure ¨killing¨, so he goes to Troi to ask about this feeling... and he said he tried everything to make himself angry again or feeling of pleasure, and one of the things he did (with other words) he watched porn and Troi kinda laughed but kept a straight face because she wanted to help Data.... man... I love Data.
Best show ever. I still watch it over and over from start to finish when I'm in bed. Great thing about it is you can pick up anywhere you want and it doesn't really matter.
It made data interesting as a character that he was existential about being a robot. I know this theme has been done before but data was one of the best.
In a subtle way Mr Data DOES have a sense of humour, you see it when someone tries to hit him and he casually talks about his upper spinal column and skull being made out of super strong materials 😂
YES!!! I was suprised when I watched the episode where he goes back in time (where Gunin meets picard and where Mark Twain is) he wrote a letter left handed, I found it great! I had a fear of them when I was very little (I think I still have). I vaguely remember walking probably with my mum in one of those department stores that sell women's clothing and one of those things were there all dressed up with the latest styles I am sure (for the 60s). I noticed a lot of things not everyone noticed - I happen to notice a black band around the lady mannequin's wrist and it freaked me out. I probably was only about 3.
Brent Spiner really shine in this role on screen. That character was created just for him for sure... And Marina Sirtis is so cute and lovely... Her laugh when she quit the room is priceless 🤣🤣
They never said what ultimately happens to Data. I'm guessing with maintenance he could live forever, maybe living to see the Temporal Cold War and beyond.

*proceeds to slowly turn towards the side but keeps his eyes on Picard*
lol
It cracked me up xD
He was just so intrigued by a man with such power and intellect and why he needs sleep. He was just simply observing.
I think about that scene randomly sometimes and laugh to my self.
Do you know what episode it is from?
Ballbusting processors operating well within acceptable perameters.
Brent Spiner NAILED that role perfectly, every bit as much as Leonard Nimoy did as Spock..

I met him this past Saturday at Boston Comic Con
Let's not mention Brent said it was the easiest role he had.
To be honest I would actually feel safer knowing that Data is staying awake as I sleep on a Klingon ship...as long as he doesn't look at me.
true, may be creepy being emotionless and just standing there. but you know your safe cause u got a bodyguard who can guard you 24 7

My new goal in life is to have a valid reason to start a sentence with the line.
"When I stroke the beard thusly...."
How he kept a straight face through that scene I'll never know!
Tough one, you will have to grow a beard first.
Nickelodeon81 Or go find somebody with a beard to stroke
You just did.

It actually makes it quite impressive that he remained not only conscious, but coherent.
Crispin Cain I want to be friends with that Klingon. He'd be great to party with, I think.
“Let’s headbutt that bulkhead, that’ll work”
How is it this guy has NO emotions and yet makes us all smile? We love this dude: he's so relatable. And, in his own special way, charming. 😋
Data has emotions all right. He's just very mellow and reserved.
Arguably one of the best fictional characters EVER.
No doubt. Data is legendary
The most endearing and expressive character in the entire Star Trek franchise can't feel emotions (couldn't)
Can not (could not).

that scene was sexy...lol!
It's funny... but Data is "acting" on something he may watched or read. That's the beauty of Data becoming human.

Star Trek TNG is simply the story of Data becoming more human, much to the crew's entertainment.
with a beard he looks like Keanu reevs
Nope, like Kevin Durand (guy mostly known from LOST, The Strain and Vikings)
OMG, I had the same thought!
It made data interesting as a character that he was existential about being a robot. I know this theme has been done before but data was one of the best.

I die laughing every time I see the scene with picard and data on the Klingon ship. it killes me, its so damn funny.
For some reason I don't like it when Data tries to act human. I prefer him to be just plain old "naive to human behavior" Data.
Well that's his goal. He just does it for the sake of trying to be human.
I think when they try to make him act human in the show it's more to inject levity than anything else. And it tends to fall flat.
when he's rolling dice it was awesome
It felt a bit corny if you ask me. Data should act like he did in the first clip here. You get absurdity and humour when he act so stiff and casual.
Yeah, kinda like how one-liner, deadpan comedians are
I’m not familiar enough with the series to really understand why he snaps with the dice but it made him look damn cool
I think that's just something you do when rolling dice and trying to look cool
the picard and data scene at the end got me
