As a Genji main I feel acknowledged… all the memes aside u have to work really hard to play our character at a high level, and it’s been an increasingly uphill battle… Genji’s entire kit is based around elims, in a game where it feels like everyone EXCEPT the high skill heros, have high survivability. Like u said, aside from personal achievement there is no reward.
Yeah, Sam said everything in this video "why would you bother improving at Genji if a moira can just walk towards you and kill you?", and that's the truth with a lot of characters in overwatch, there's literally no reason to not play the ez characters if all you want is to win, and all people want is win, even on quick play people are fucking sweating and calling people words for not swapping
I main Doom, used to main Genji. If I want to play "sit still and shoot" I'd play cod or battlefield. Playing the high mobility/high skill heroes that made overwatch fun and famous is no longer fun. It's boring. Deleted the game last week
If big sponsors are pulling out because of the lawsuit and don’t want to be associated that changes the public perception and people don’t wanna watch plus there was already a downturn in viewership and it just made it worse
The most egregious sin was lying about PvE. I can’t believe people still play the game after that crime. It should have been a full on boycott or even a riot after that announcement. It’s unforgivable.
The reason skins are overpriced is as they are only for 1 of 34? Characters. Fortnite skins are just as expensive but you can use it constantly and mix it with other sets.

Remember when the community BEGGED for brig to be removed?? It was like the one single thing the entire community side shitters(their opinions should be ignored) agreed on… They could have saved the game AND earn the trust and love of every player worth a damn with a single push of a button….
3:42 I fully agree with you same, there is absolutely NO skill expression in this game. if someone is getting rolled on tank, they switch to the ez orisa spam, If they are getting rolled on dps, they switch to mei, reaper, junk (ez heroes), and if they are getting rolled on healer they go moira, mercy, or brig. Its bad when a moira can fade IN on an enemy team to get a kill with lil to no risk and moira has a soft aimlock...., meanwhile doomfist and genji gets punished instantly if they tried that, even though doomfist and genji have a way higher skill ceiling, and tgenji would have to play perfect to beat moira, while all moira does is hold left click, and get value.
I don't agree that there is no skill expression. Good players will still be able to climb ranks with good understanding of positioning and game mechanics. The problem is that the game offers little incentive to play high-skill heroes. Why even learn Genji when other broken DPS can do the same thing as you and support heroes can delete your entire kit with a click of a button? That experience is just horrible.
This is why we become 1 tricks. Even though it isn't optimal, learning to play every matchup on a hard character is more fun than swapping to braindead counters
I was watching your older videos and I just got hit with so much nostalgia with this video too. I remember I would come home after high school and grind the f out of overwatch and stay home an entire weekend for years on end, where I made so many memories and friends, good and bad. 18:00 this is so fucking real though, like i remember first hitting masters in season 12 and joining a team right as brig meta started, being so fucking pumped and excited to play the game and potentially go pro and then got immediately burnt out by how shitty the meta was, especially as a dps player.
Your absolutely correct my friend. I'm an F1 eSports player. This year ESL took over setting it up. They had a contract issue between F1 and ESL. The total Payout for ALL the winnings is only $750,000 USD. F1 is saying we are not making any money off this like they thought. They couldn't get anything done. So after only 1 race this season is has been canceled indefinitely. My thing is the NBA subsidizes the WNBA. Which is a millions dollar money pit each year. And F1 can't subsidize only $750,000. I love F1 but not F1 the organization. Bc they are soooo greedy. Off the Las Vegas race this year in the USA. They made a billion dollars. And they had 24 races this year. If anything they could put it in their advertising budget. Which companies speed billions on each year. Greedy organization.

Man looking at those early owl widow clips is so fuckn cool i miss that so much. I remember me and my friends watching owl with each other for the entire first season and we were so hype for it. Then the game got destroyed.
My wife and I saw the Inaugural Season's Stage 1 finals in Burbank. We were there for like 8ish hours. Sat in the bank for a few matches and moved to the front rows. Even got our faces on camera when they went to a commercial break during the stream. It was awesome. It's honestly depressing that this experience might not be relived anytime soon, and what sucks is that we would love to invite friends to go see it.
You say that the frat boy culture doesn't matter, but if it was a more traditional corporate styled hierarchy they might have actually hit some of those numbers that the sponsors wanted.
Ah yes, the frat boy culture was not in Overwatch. That's why many ex devs said it was, why many ex devs mentioned how crazy the higher ups acted, how many times they got told "do X thing" and then told to do something else days later and, of course, McCree got his name changed, cause that culture was absolutely never in Overwatch.
Jesse McCree himself never worked on Overwatch and was not a part of Team 4. Now the name for a cowboy was pretty good I won't lie - still in my head to this day. But there is a discussion to be had as to what was admired about him back in the day considering that they were working on different projects in the first place. On a side-note: In hindsight it's easy to take a jab at a whole situation, but if one of your friends was to be revealed to be a creep some day and you were totally unaware about it - would it feel fair to be bundled into a 'they knew but didn't say anything' category just because you spent time hanging out alongside them? I'm not saying that Jesse hasn't done anything terrible, but I am saying that not everybody who was around him is just as responsible as he is - if there is a chance they didn't know any better. Some people lie really well, and creeps hide around normal people all the time.
My only issue ever with OWL, was that the teams were pretty much never people from those cities. Pretty much every team brought in players from China instead which felt more like it was just China's league.
From what I understand from what the game was doing overtime: > OWL was introduced by Bobby. This caused competitive that was supposed to be fostered naturally and draw sponsers to instead make it occur quicker. What made sponsers not sponser was costs. > Jeff wanted the direction of the game being fun and introduce PvE hopefully. > Bobby despises this direction and tries to hinder it every step of the way all for OWL. > OWL runs out of money and dies? If I missed anything, lemme know.
I miss the overall uniqueness of those heroes back then there was ton of flavour even though it was not efficient. Example Torb picking scraps so he can throw armor packs to teammates or Symmetra having 2 ultimates even though teleporter was not used that often stacking heroes these were the things which made the game fun. But by making it into Esports and showing it down our throat with OWL and METAs they slowly added nails into the coffin. Once noone gave a shit about OWL because besides Seoul Dynasty for OWL and South Korea for International everyone was going mirror matches over and over and it got stale reaaaally fucking quick. After this debacle they started to casualize the game with braindead heroes which were not fun to play as because they were too easy *cough* Moira, Brigitte *cough* and even less fun to play against. If they let the Esport build itself naturally they could have a long spanning success like League of Legends has with its ESL or Counter Strike had with its leagues or Warcraft 3 , Starcraft 1 and 2 but they forced it rushed it and in the end squandered it. This is why OW failed.
I remember when League had a meta where 2 junglers would be played, Karthus and Yi. Not disimilar to what Blizz did with OW2 in terms of forcing a certain playstyle, execpt you know what happened? RIOT NERFED IT. The fact that they still cannot nerf heals if you have more than 2 on your team is baffling. The game doesn't need 6v6, it needs some good balancing for people to want to keep playing.
Canceling PvE is what started the downfall for all of overwatch including OWL. PvE wouldve brought a TON of new players into the community which leads to more money for development but with the lack of more players playing the game means less money to put into the competitive side of the game which created a huge snowball of bad decisions that got us where were at now.
I think it's pretty ridiculous to say that the huge lawsuit had nothing to do with OWL's failure. Because even if the lawsuit was just a convenient out for their advertisers, they likely wouldn't have all pulled out at the same time if the lawsuit never happened. And the advertisers pulling out one by one would have been a far more manageable situation. Also just because "team 4 had nothing to come up in the suit" doesn't mean the association in peoples minds wasn't there. I for one felt sick to my stomach anytime I'd seen anything by blizzard for a whole year after the fact because OW, CoD, WoW, Diablo were all inherently linked to that disgusting place. I unfollowed everything Overwatch related for a year because all I could think of was the harassment that Blizzard had facilitated.
I dont care what people say, ow1 - for me - was better. In a ton of ways. The best memories i had with the game was playing Rein Zarya with my friend. It was the kind of synergy that was just felt great. I only really ever played this game casually (granted, for over 1500 hours). And I miss ow1. Fck dude i miss it. I have said this before but WHY THE FCK did they remove so much? Borders that rewarded you for playing the game a lot? GONE. My plat border i played over 1500 hours for... GONE. For good. Not coming back. Im still not over it. A way of unlucking skins for free? Forget it. Were not doing that. An amazing way for finding people to queue up with? (LFG) GONE. Forever. For no reason. That one hurt a lot for me personally. I met some amazing people through LFG. People I still play with today. But no. Gone. Yeah overwatch 1 had its flaws... but this- this is worse. Like... just look at what they are doing. Locking broken heroes behind paywalls. Boring gameplay. (Mauga mirror matchup, i think we can agree that those fcking SUCK) So if i had the option to go back... dude i would.
The thing that annoys me most about this video is that they seem to pretend nobody saw this coming. Like no, Richard Lewis and many other industry experts called this train wreck coming back in 2017.

I never played ow1 but i can tell the 6v6 format is light years better of a format. I loved the feeling of overwatch 2 when it first came out, anticipated playing it when i got off work and now i despise playing it. Tank is the most miserable class to play. Dps is right behind it because i try and play genji as much as possible but the supports who dont have to aim ruin the game for me while i have to actually hit shots. And support is becoming autopilot if it isnt there already
I remember back in the day when people were talking about Blizz saying they did NOT want to run SC and sc2 tournaments and make a league, and I have to wonder, if they ever did that and learned, would OWL would have been a big of a flop? or would we even have ow with sc being killed by the change XD
Even if they bring 6v6, the entire game is changed - down to the engine and geometry, it will play like shi. Companies struggle to get things like geomtry and engine tuning to what ow1 accomplished on launch. This makes and breaks games long term. ow2 is flawed. Only way is to bring back ow1 framework back. Ow2 models are very out of wack and buggy. Example, you have mercy being taller than winston for example. or lucio as tall as winston.... maps were also deleted, shrunk or modified. The list goes on and on, including down to the code. You don't want to know the number of bandaids or suppression code they force in to make ow2 even functional. rip.
I hate so much on being right on this. The pandemic was a huge chance for E-Sport. While you missed the opportunity to do it life, it was the only sport you could host purly online. So if any executive would have cared about the league, they would have used the chance to embody it in culture. As they didn't do any attempt to do so, it was kind of obvious they were selling out. And the second one was that typical buisness world would not be competent enough to provide a game thats polished and stable enough to provide longterm value. That's why we split clubs, leagues and media in traditional sport. So the core game like football stays stable for a long term. And anything that moves much faster like a club, brand or sponsors are different buisness entities.
I was a religious overwatch player and I loved every aspect of it. I haven’t touched that game in 3 months now and it is depressing seeing rich morons ruin fun for everyone

I think they put it poorly, but what the chatter meant by "self-serving" is simply that you were going "facts" while they were playing your own quote. That's all, it wasn't a comment on the content of the quote. It's just a bit silly (as Peen says) seeing someone be their own hypeman, haha.
The fact that people defend the 2nd game is honestly depressing I barely play it and this game went from getting game of the year to being a trash marketing cash grab the 2nd overwatch literally ruined everything 😂😂
I'm not against designs of heroes like Moira, Brig, Mercy or Lifeweaver. But they must be trash and approached as low-tier meta. Attempts to make them viable for every rank is what made them broken and unfun to play against.
3:30 Sadly my friend. The suite is part of the reason. Not fully but that payout was massive any company would take a hit too that. We can't deny after that the funding dropped massively as well with "Cancel culture" being at such a high rn.....them being moved off mainstream media killed it even more so
It wasnt the game becoming more casual that killed owl, it was doomed from the start because of how cold and corporate it was.there was no passion no stories and there was no connection between the fans and the teams.
To me, it seems like Jeff Kaplan and Bobby Kotick has completely different visions of where the game should be headed. Trying to do both just means you fail at both.
The graphics/design upgrade from OW1 to OW2 was weird to me. Like, yeah, sure, looks a little better, but all of the character redesigns were just worse than their OW1 designs. The OW2 character designs are much more cluttered and messy
Honestly, I think both the community and the devs need to pony up an settle this once and for all. Devote an entire season if you have to, but have a 5v5 comp mode run alongside 6v6 comp mode (like that one season with comp CTF) and see which one actually comes out on top with the playerbase numbers.

15:33 literally, no you spitting facts my good sir
Isn’t it truly ironic that this is the story of Overwatch itself? Wild.
If big sponsors are pulling out because of the lawsuit and don’t want to be associated that changes the public perception and people don’t wanna watch plus there was already a downturn in viewership and it just made it worse
35:40 remember hearing this and going GG its gon be ass.
"These kfc wraps are really good btw"😂😂😂
The most egregious sin was lying about PvE. I can’t believe people still play the game after that crime. It should have been a full on boycott or even a riot after that announcement. It’s unforgivable.
The reason skins are overpriced is as they are only for 1 of 34? Characters. Fortnite skins are just as expensive but you can use it constantly and mix it with other sets.
Samito is my favorite content creator. He sticks to his guns and takes. He does his research and understands OW better than most. Speaks against what everyone wants/say because its right and better for the game. He's a real one and worth supporting. It makes me sad and angry to see what OW used to be and how far away we are from that. They absolutely killed this game.
I played OW for many years pumping in so many hours in to 5 accounts. Since OW2 came out i play a game or two then uninstall through pure pain of the experience. then come back for a game or 2 weeks after. then repeat, I keep wanting it to work for me, but the game is rot now..
Loot boxes made it so that you could feasably get all skins from just playing the game, shop is major downgrade
@jaber5345 It also just added an actual incentive to the game. It was so nice to see your level go up, get a lot box, and even if it was probably going to be all commons at least there was a chance you got something good. Really miss them hope they bring them back
Blizzard fucked up Overwatch more than Hi-Rez fucked up Paladins. EVERYTHING is broke in Paladins, but at least the gameplay is fun.
Casually, sure. Paladins balancing is dogshit.
True. I can't play that game competitively at all. I don't really know the metas and don't really care to know them. But I really do enjoy the game casually, with friends. It's worth playing. I really think it's a better 5v5 than OW2. @@ProfessionalSupervillain
@@OneTrickRipper I generally agree. My one gripe is that I’m practically a Doomfist onetrick and haven’t found anyone in Paladins that scratches that itch. Raum and Khan are fun though.
Overwatch always makes me think of "What it could have been" Its so insanely sad
I just want to leave this somewhere and I guess this video will be a good a place as any.
I haven’t touched Overwatch 2 since it released and I have no plans on ever returning either.
I used to love playing Zen and Reaper and just hop on and play for fun but I’ve actually just lost my love for this game and it saddens me.
This will probably be one of the last time you see me around too because why would I watch content on a game I no longer care about?
I wish you all the best and good luck in the future Sam.
40:30 Holy shit THANK YOU for saying this, I've been saying this SINCE the game was ever showned, complained about it and I thought I was going crazy 'cause nobody seemed to care? Jesus Christ, thanks for saying this.
Remember when the community BEGGED for brig to be removed?? It was like the one single thing the entire community side shitters(their opinions should be ignored) agreed on…
They could have saved the game AND earn the trust and love of every player worth a damn with a single push of a button….
Late answer but they should have disabled the character like they did with bastion in overwatch 2
I mean to be fair it’s not really easy to get value on reaper or junk on some maps. It’s all situational.
Even though it isn't optimal, learning to play every matchup on a hard character is more fun than swapping to braindead counters
this is so funny to read lol, hard for the game to express your skill when you have none
Guys seriously like and share this video, gotta protest.
bring back rank icons
fucking bring back 6v6 instead of rank icons
I was watching your older videos and I just got hit with so much nostalgia with this video too. I remember I would come home after high school and grind the f out of overwatch and stay home an entire weekend for years on end, where I made so many memories and friends, good and bad. I'm so grateful I lived through this stage of overwatch where the league and the competitive scene were peak. Made it to GM as a Lucio main. Telling my kids about it 🤣
I blame like 90% of it on Bobby, both for OWL and the game as a whole.
18:00 this is so fucking real though, like i remember first hitting masters in season 12 and joining a team right as brig meta started, being so fucking pumped and excited to play the game and potentially go pro and then got immediately burnt out by how shitty the meta was, especially as a dps player.
one of the biggest thing I missed in ow1 was LFG.
Apex.... What a series. Lunatic Hai, Kongdoo Panthera, Runaway, GC Busan. Legendary
You can't have easy heroes bring value with a single button shame on blizzard I feel bad for so many people who actually took time and tried to be very good at overwatch for stupid game design no flaw characters to ruin there dream
37:54 Oh really Sam?
Bobby is fired now.
Guess they'll get rid of their predatory "microtransactions" (that should be called macro since they're priced to the same price as indies and even AA games) now, right? Since Bobby was at FULL FAULT for the monetization changes, they clearly will push back now that he's gone, right?
Open your eyes, nobody is innocent there. They did this to themselves and nothing will change.
Glad someone said this, Bobby was just a scapegoat for team 4 being the worst dev team of 2023.
I remember watching every game during the Inaugural season, the teamwork between the teams everything was so good i loved it i even brought the lifetime subscription to the OW League good times nothing will ever come close to it.
"Who were the Bengals of the OWL?....probably the Florida Mayhem" maybe if the Bengals ever win a SB....
We complained a lot about OW1 without knowing that we were all playing it at its prime....
I honestly dont think we even needed new heros, just new maps
I'm gonna be honest. I'd ratter watch goats than wheat ever the hell we have today.
Seeing those Philly Fusion clips choking in the finals brought back some tough moments
You say that the frat boy culture doesn't matter, but if it was a more traditional corporate styled hierarchy they might have actually hit some of those numbers that the sponsors wanted.
You saying “facts” to your own statement is such a Samito thing to do hahaha i love it
well he’s right
I wanna know do the Devs actually play test things before they release them into game?
From what I understand from what the game was doing overtime:
> OWL was introduced by Bobby.
Think that's the first time advertising actually worked saw that chicken wrap and decided to buy one.
Not even 48 hours later overwatch esports is dropped on us lol
Canceling PvE is what started the downfall for all of overwatch including OWL. PvE wouldve brought a TON of new players into the community which leads to more money for development but with the lack of more players playing the game means less money to put into the competitive side of the game which created a huge snowball of bad decisions that got us where were at now.
Samito : I hate sunset maps and different lighting maps in multiplayer games
Hunt Showdown players : 🗿☕
(Mauga mirror matchup, i think we can agree that those fcking SUCK)
So if i had the option to go back... dude i would.
The thing that annoys me most about this video is that they seem to pretend nobody saw this coming. Like no, Richard Lewis and many other industry experts called this train wreck coming back in 2017.
that old school kentucky damn
i agree a lot with samito but i disagree with 9:15. what does it matter that new york plays london when all 12 players in the lobby r korean? always thought that was odd.
in football the whole field is either white or black… the whole french national soccer team is black… it’s not rlly about ethnicity, it’s about representing the city 🏙️
@@Glacier32 is this glacier the tank player?! I’m cash idk if you know me… I know in the third season of the league they started to try to make it so players matched more with the team but obviously kinda fell apart after that. I see ur point though
I miss ow 1 so much. The lvl system was amazing.
The stare bro.
I gotta say that I like the Ping System and the Hero Changes.. but everything else is worse, even the graphics!
but I think inaccessability of OW1 is what hurts Overwatch the most
Blizzard did the impossible, they did a game worst than the recents call of dutys
Jjonak literally has always been my favorite pro. God tier mechanics and game sense
I can't believe how upsetting it is to watch the history of OW now in hindsight. God what we had.
46:04 god damn that sign hits hard
Sam Sam Sam, these edits are phenomenal lately 💯
I was a religious overwatch player and I loved every aspect of it. I haven’t touched that game in 3 months now and it is depressing seeing rich morons ruin fun for everyone
i also stopped playing this shitty ass game, and it is sad cause i dont even miss ow
I was absolutely obsessed with this game from launch. Now it's been over a year and I have no desire to touch it. Blizzard took a goldmine and destroyed it
I think they put it poorly, but what the chatter meant by "self-serving" is simply that you were going "facts" while they were playing your own quote.
Super depressing stuff
3:30 Sadly my friend. The suite is part of the reason. Not fully but that payout was massive any company would take a hit too that. We can't deny after that the funding dropped massively as well with "Cancel culture" being at such a high rn.....them being moved off mainstream media killed it even more so
It wasnt the game becoming more casual that killed owl, it was doomed from the start because of how cold and corporate it was.there was no passion no stories and there was no connection between the fans and the teams.
Samito’s takes best takes
To me, it seems like Jeff Kaplan and Bobby Kotick has completely different visions of where the game should be headed. Trying to do both just means you fail at both.
I miss 6v6. I also miss loot boxes 🤷🏻♂️
in conclusion overwatch 2 is complete shit, there was no reason to kill overwatch 1 and fuck blizzard
The graphics/design upgrade from OW1 to OW2 was weird to me. Like, yeah, sure, looks a little better, but all of the character redesigns were just worse than their OW1 designs. The OW2 character designs are much more cluttered and messy
The only redesign I like is probably for Lucio, that's it.
ban feature couldve fixed almost every problem imo
This game is just turning into high rise - PC edition
Can we just get 6 v 6 back. Every game is a deathmatch game. No synergy . . . no anything. It sucks.
Good times, NOW it's gone 😭
I see the mills edit good work man
I wish the devs would listen to samito.hes right on so many things. We need 6v6.
Honestly, I think both the community and the devs need to pony up an settle this once and for all. Devote an entire season if you have to, but have a 5v5 comp mode run alongside 6v6 comp mode (like that one season with comp CTF) and see which one actually comes out on top with the playerbase numbers.
@@HasturBeta They literally had years to do this, they were letting OW1 rot in the sidelines thinking they were making a better sequel. Instead they wasted years and money promising us something that never came, while watering down the original game and ignoring the community. True incompetence at its peak.
I like how this video is out after Freedos video about the new Blizzard. Get em Sam.
