I went through Sumter Boot Camp in south Florida in 1986 at 17 and it was no joke. They will, and I mean will, make you become a better responsible man. I was 150 lbs going in and 190lbs coming out . No smoking, drinking or partying. All eating, working and plenty of exercise. Teaching you skills to be successful also. I’m now 50, own my own business, home, and happily married with awesome kids (now young adults) who’ve never been in trouble. I look back and think what my life could’ve been if not going through that. Probably be in a cage or dead.

I was in Challenge Incarceration Program in the Minnesota Women's Corrections Facility, and it changed my life. For the people worried about tax money? Wouldn't you rather spend your dollars that are being taken regardless, to help people and lower the rate of recitivism? Instead of just spending on needs to basically warehouse prisoners so they can be released to re-offend and end up back in taking more money. Every single woman I graduated with, is still doing above and beyond their own past. CIP is an incredible program and I owe myself to it. Take it from someone who knows, who has been there, and lived it. It changed me, back into me. Helped me gain skills and confidence, and trust. It changed my life.

“Decades later numerous studies shed doubt on their effectiveness.”
These programs would work a lot better if there was some kind of follow on component that gave a little meaning and purpose to their lives. I joined the Marine Corps at 19 and it changed my life and Bootcamp was a huge part of that. Being a Marine for 6 years after bootcamp was also a huge part. Bootcamp gave me discipline and taught me a lot of lessons about grit and fortitude. Being a Marine gave me a reason to live my life a certain way after Bootcamp and that meant not engaging in criminal behavior, taking care of my body, and working to get better at my job within the Marine Corps.
These guys go through this program that gives them structure and discipline but doesn’t give them a place to focus that once they’re done.

This is 100% true. I went through a program in Illinois, got out and all I knew how to do was work out so that's all I did until I got hooked back on drugs. I finally got clean a few years after than and live a good life. It was a good experience and definitely gave me a big feeling of accomplishment. I think it's a great program but like the prison system as a whole, we need better integration into the real life component of society.

Many people don’t know these places or that this option is available to them. I had no idea. If you know anyone thinking about entering the Drug Court program, tell them to ask about the boot camp or the SIP (State Intermediate Punishment) program. That’s what it’s called in PA. Sooooo many people fail at Drug Court. If I was given the option of SIP or Drug Court, I would have taken SIP without even having to think about it.

You have to learn a bunch of things in the handbook they give you. I went there in September 10,2015 to march 2016. Now that I think about it,it was hard. I graduated from it bc I needed to go home to my family after doing 2 years upstate before getting shock. Yeah it's hard but you get use to it then it becomes a bit easier.

But this is good idea to try once. If they fail that is on them. And it should not be on society. One big problem is that for a lazy person who has no desire to better himself prison is 3 squares a day without any responsibilities. There are people who prefer prison to legitimate work.

Went to one in wisconsin st. Croix for 7 months and it was a trip to put it lightly! Most sergeants and captains served in war and they tend to take things a bit too far sometimes and not realize it. Other than that i learned more in that 7 months than i did most of my life😂 they teach you to teach yourself anything you want. But i was institutionalized the first day out. but I dont break the laws anymore so in that way it did what its suppost to do! But the Thinking for change prison program i think should be offered first as a 4-7 month program to get non violent offenders out and a more serious program for the violent offenders tbh

@@QueensCage Many fail all the time. I was there in 2000. Our platoon started with 77 inmates but only 40 graduated. You get evaluated every week for school, work, exercise, keeping your area tidy, your locker arranged and bed made, uniforms ironed, boots shined, etc. and if your scores are low one time too many you get ejected and sent to do your original sentence at a prison. I saw people from different platoons go home every week in the 26 weeks I was there. Then when we got home I saw a few guys violate parole within a week, one guy on his first day out.

I think high schools should be run like this; IT'S ALL A MATTER OF SETTING A VERY HIGH STANDARD AND GIVING THE PROPER MOTIVATION! We have set such a low standard of conduct for our Public Schools, that it should be no surprise that we have what we have today. How about mandatory Military service for all, right out of high school?
