Also the street lights and bridge's wires are more stable on Saturn. Apparently the reason Saturn polygons were less shaky than PS1 was due to a lack of precision on floating point operations on the PS1, PS1 compensated in other areas.
At the Saturn side in 6:17 you can notice how the bridge columns and the rest of the modeling pieces, appeared one by one out of nowhere. At the PS1 side in 6:23, you just can notice the first colum appearing like that, the rest is smooth.

Except that the Saturn has poor occlusion culling for subpixel rendering. My personal comparison: FMV Cutscenes: I think PS1's ones are better than Saturn's ones. PS1 has more colours on screen, a better framerate and it looks less pixelated. I'd rather be able to see details and pixels and take note there's actually a wider screen in the Saturn. The car is just a slight bit smaller and wider and there's more area to view. Look at the PlayStation. The car is a little bit fatter and there's less viewing area

The differences seems pretty atypical for what one would expect from a Saturn vs Playstation comparison. The Playstations has some advantages like true transparency for the car's shadow. But honestly the difference's are are quite small, even with the superior 3d graphics of the Playstation the differences are small. Usually I prefer the Saturn version anyways because of the controller. You really can't beat that lovely d-pad
Saturn was designed to be a 2D machine, with a last minute upgrade used to make it closer to the Playstation. Thus where the asynchronous, wasteful dual Hitiachi processor design came from. Sega completely misread the market and paid dearly for it. But Saturn fanboys continue to pretend that it was "better" than the Playstation in 3D. About as laughable as saying the Playstation was built for 2D.
@Rap Lawyer yep, there still peoples stupids enough to say "Saturn was bulid for 2D and was upgrade at last minutes because the PS1" ....... it's obviously impossible, on the one hand because all the business plan and the financing will be compromise and on the other hand because it is not possible about the timing, the two consoles have seen their specs revealed to the press at the same time. And anyway stop believing that all this generation of console revolves around the PS1.
After playing the Saturn version with 3d analog controller, it's hard to go back the ps version even though the Saturn version has horrible hit detection bugs
The Saturn version looks smoother...but the highway looks like a river in some areas. The PS version has better texture mapping and lighting effects. I give the slight edge to the PS version.
"better texture mapping" sure, better textures, but not mapping. Look at the PSX version at 4:58 (the side of the bus, helps to pause the video) and compare to the Saturn version at 5:26 and you'll see that the mapping on the Saturn is far superior. This is down to the way the two systems handle polygons, Saturn draws them as quads and PSX drew them as tris. This is the cause of the nasty texture distortion the PSX suffered, and why you don't see it on Saturn.
The transparency on the saturn is the only drawback. From what I've heard it was a pain to program for the saturn and that's why psx gauge is transparent.
The video play on the Saturn looks so much better in color and higher resolution. I remember playing Road Rash on PS1 and watching the Videos that played in like 10 fps lol
Interesting fact is that the video encoder is somewhat better but it might be too soft in the playstation version but it won't make a huge diference in an actual CRT
Both versions are more or less identical, differences are minor quibbling. PSX has a slightly longer draw distance and shadow effect to hide polygon pop-up, but its screen image is strangely squashed. The Saturn version has the polygon pop-up, but it's minor and in keeping with the era, and its graphics engine doesn't have any wobbling or glitching. God Bless Playstation, but that system couldn't draw a straight line to save its life. Overall, I'd be tempted to give a slight edge to Saturn, but that's mostly out of pity. There are very few times where Sega beat Sony in the polygon contest. And once Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer 4 dropped, PSX pulled away for good and Saturn was left choking on the fumes. For most players, both versions appear to be the same experience and everyone should have a fun time.
Playstation has less pop in, no dithering on the shadows. Proper transparency effects the Saturn lacks. The Saturn to my eye, looks to be running slightly higher resolution. It also appears to me Playstation is pushing more colours, wider palette. In lit tunnels with how flat and one coloured the road looks on Saturn. Saturn's road textures and various textures may have more colour compression or just less colours. Saturn has better background sprite scrolling. Either seems fine but this game is a little primitive in general for PlayStation, It is really a Saturn game ported to PSX. Dedicated PSX racers by this time looked quite a lot better. E.G Rage Racer came out before this title, and it's another world in terms of visuals, blows this away
The Sega Saturn's mesh used for the shadows are one of the only ways I was able to tell them apart. Playstation has a lot more polygon break-up. The scrolling looks better in The Sega Saturn version. But the PS1 also covers the pop-in much better than The SS. I can't really choose a true winner in this.
playstation version has wobbly polygons saturn looks rock solid everything stretched on ps1 saturn has correct aspect ratio especially noticable on sprites saturn version better color playstation better transparency and fog playstation version better draw distance
Not a big difference in the two versions, but the ps1 looks better overall. My eyes see a slightly higher resolution on the ps1 and texturing looking more photo realistic. Do some pausing on the Car selection and you can see the wheels looking really rough on saturn and textures just aren't as clean as the playstation as well, and everything thing just looks a little duller on saturn. I have to imagine the playstation has further texture shading abilities which are able to give things a more organic look and not as flat.
On psx, shadow effects mitigate draw-in problem. Aspect ratio is better on saturn - on psx, everything look flattened. Colours look a bit better on saturn. FMV looks a bit better on psx, less grainy.
Neither looks particularly special, however the visible polygon seaming in the tunnel roofs and the more pronounced texture swim of the PS version are more important to me than the more muted colours, shadowy fade-in and transparencies, and as such the Saturn version does look a bit better, without taking aspect ratio into account. Also, I know the Saturn version benefits from having an actual background processor, but what is going on with the background in the PS version?
+exit planet dust "Aspect ratio is better on saturn - on psx, everything look flattened" Indeed! The PS1 version looks all wrong, like a SNES game. It's instantly noticeable with the counter at the botton right which is not round anymore but everything else looks flattened too. Sure such issue is not as bad with racing games as it is for others genres such as side scrolling games but still it doesn't look good. But on the other hand the PS1 version has real transparency for the car shadow and more solid 3D. Sound is better on Saturn, the sound fx (like when we overtake others cars) stand out more.
The pixels that make up the cars on ps1 are wiggly and always moving around, while on Saturn they know their place and stay steady. Yet ps1 seems a smoother framerate and slightly more detailed.
Ya, they didn't have a feature on their 3D chip that every other 3D card has(PC and console). I forget what it is called, but I think it starts with a V. I think it was a cost cutting measure. My memory is shady. Too long ago I read about it. That is why there is no 3D PS1 title without warping textures and "jagged" edges.
Seriously this game look good on both system. The PSX have fade in on the far polygons. But the far background moves choppy. I have PSX & Saturn but I never own or played this game. My first one was on Dreamcast.
@@queercommunist It is unfortunate. I was the ONLY one of my friends to have a Saturn. We all preferred the Saturn as far as hardware goes, mainly due to the fact that the loading times were half that of PS but, it was really hard to compete with the seemingly endless library on Playstation.
That's hardly a demanding game so I'm not sure it's a good example, If you look closely you can see a lot of the geometry has been simplified on the Saturn version, check put the tunnel walls.
Man, game looks way nicer on Saturn and so does its HUD, skybox and collor palette. PlayStation's quite nice, too; But I got to go with Saturn. Nice vid, man!
Saturn did better in japan for a reason. More in house releases that knew the hardware well. Apparently there were a lot of mistranslations and devs couldn't figure out a lot of important points. I think it isnt so much that the hardware was hard to work with, its more that they really had no usable reference.
The way the background layer jerks around on the PS1 version is very distracting. The stretched aspect ratio isn't cool either. And whilst the PS1 version has higher quality FMV, the colours don't look right to me. The skin tones especially look more natural on the Saturn version, plus the guy driving the car's gloves are almost pink in the PS1 intro (it's possible they could have been, but the deep red of the Saturn one is more likely).
I love the Saturn but if I'm being 100% unbiased, PS1 wins. The difference is so slight though I personally wouldn't care either way if I had to play one or the other. Chose PS1 due to not as much popup and shading looks a teensy bit better to me.
Sega Saturn has: - crisper video - sharper colour contrast - stable polygons (PlayStation polygons look "loosely" connected) - correct aspect ration (judging by the RPM gauges) PlayStation has: - smoother video - better frame rate - 93.23 millions more consoles on the market (according to Wikipedia)
Sony’s gameplay is more realistic because the “world's models” are gradually fothcoming from the dark, in contrast to the “sudden appearance” - on Saturn :)
yeah, only thing i noticed really was the difference in the road surfaces. The Saturn looked more animated/brighter and the PSX looked more realistic, otherwise everything else was negligible.
PS1 has better FMVs but apparently Saturn has more cutscenes. More importantly: once in-game (4:43) the PS1 version has bad aspect ratio, the graphics look all wrong, stretched like a SNES game. Does this game runs in the PS1 low resolution mode? On the other hand the PS1 version has real transparency for the car shadow and more solid 3D. The sound is better on Saturn, the sound fx stand out more.
Interesting observation seeing how the Saturn has primitive occlusion culling for subpixel rendering. This is most noticable at 4:47 when the large buildings suddenly appear immediately on screen whereas the PlayStation gradually (smoothly) fades them in.
Man this is really close but the Saturn version does stutter a bit, and the car textures seem a bit more detailed on the PlayStation, but the Saturn vehicle is zoomed out a bit more, and the draw distance on the Saturn seems a tad further, the PlayStation also has no perspective correction, and has warping in textures, while the Saturn doesnt...,overall there practically the same
odd enough it appears the Saturn had better lighting effects on this and the bridges look better. PS1 Cars look better though. Why is the lighting for the street lights after the lights on the PS1?
Pop in is a lot more noticeable on Saturn, typical shit shadow on Saturn, Dial hud is too big on PS1, though it is transparent on the PS1 and I like the camera been a bit closer on PS1.

The transparency on the saturn is the only drawback. From what I've heard it was a pain to program for the saturn and that's why psx gauge is transparent.
PS has better transparency, that is why the walls disappear in times :)
Draw distance is similar but pop up is hidden by the shadow effect on PS1
Tokyo? More like Smoke-e-yo, amirite? 👺👌💨
FMV better on the PSX
I can’t stop seeing the car shake so much on the PlayStation.
playstation version has wobbly polygons
saturn looks rock solid
everything stretched on ps1
saturn has correct aspect ratio especially noticable on sprites
saturn version better color
playstation better transparency and fog
playstation version better draw distance
I honestly barely notice the dithering on the Saturn version, so I doubt you’d notice it on your typical crt back in the day
Sucks they didn't take the time to get smooth draw-in on the Saturn like the PSX. It could be done!
I have to imagine the playstation has further texture shading abilities which are able to give things a more organic look and not as flat.
saturn has better colours but playstation looks sharper with better backgrounds i'm going with tie
Also, I know the Saturn version benefits from having an actual background processor, but what is going on with the background in the PS version?
i'd rather play the version where the roads are not spray painted blue and yellow to poorly simulate the effect of lighting.
That "lighting" doesn't affect the vehicles in the PlayStation version, so it's kind of moot, really.
+exit planet dust
"Aspect ratio is better on saturn - on psx, everything look flattened"
Indeed!
Sound is better on Saturn, the sound fx (like when we overtake others cars) stand out more.
i can't see any lighting in both for one to say only saturn is faking it.
Ps1 is better. Less pop up, clearer and smoother.
lol no its running at a lesser resolution and frames per second than the saturn
@@nick13b and has no perspective correction ...
Proves that the further saturn development got, even third party developers started to match the playstation with their efforts.
Unfortunately the Saturn fate was already sealed in 97
@@queercommunist It is unfortunate.
Since the first Panzer Dragoon, the Saturn had nothing technically to envy the PS1 ....
Saturn
FMV and transparency better on PS but the ps version has glitches in the sides where camera goes off of course
The way the background layer jerks around on the PS1 version is very distracting. The stretched aspect ratio isn't cool either. And whilst the PS1 version has higher quality FMV, the colours don't look right to me. The skin tones especially look more natural on the Saturn version, plus the guy driving the car's gloves are almost pink in the PS1 intro (it's possible they could have been, but the deep red of the Saturn one is more likely).
saturn has a much more stable picture, for some reason on playstation polygons are constantly spazzing the f out
I love the Saturn but if I'm being 100% unbiased, PS1 wins. The difference is so slight though I personally wouldn't care either way if I had to play one or the other. Chose PS1 due to not as much popup and shading looks a teensy bit better to me.
Sega Saturn has:
- crisper video
- sharper colour contrast
- stable polygons (PlayStation polygons look "loosely" connected)
- correct aspect ration (judging by the RPM gauges)
PlayStation has:
- smoother video
- better frame rate
- 93.23 millions more consoles on the market (according to Wikipedia)
>Playstation
>better frame rate
XDDDDDDDDDDD
Sony’s gameplay is more realistic because the “world's models” are gradually fothcoming from the dark, in contrast to the “sudden appearance” - on Saturn :)
Saturn: Slightly better car models
PS1: Better road textures
yeah, only thing i noticed really was the difference in the road surfaces. The Saturn looked more animated/brighter and the PSX looked more realistic, otherwise everything else was negligible.
I love saturn but the music in psx is better.
PS1 clear winner for me. The car looks better, draw distance much further so no pop up, generally clearer and crisper looking.
*PSX fixed the overpixeled problem bluring its graphics. Saturn had better colors and lights.*
Both are close but the Definitive version to play it’s on Sega Dreamcast known as Tokyo Xtreme Racer..
Colors on Saturn are preferable.
Road also has more detail.
The old Shutokou Battle 97 for PS1
Texture warping in psx is criminal
Yes. That's why I hate this console despite its good library.
Holy shit! If I'm not mistaken, even 3do didn't have the problem!
The house of the dead, bro!
Saturn version has a pixelated "shadow"
It's called dithering! Yes, unfortunately dithering was showing a lot of presence on the Saturn.
@@moonwalkerboy162 saturn couldn't do transparency due to its use of quads instead of polygons
Serrilhados, etc.
the pS1 looks sooooper SHakey
Car Shadow on the Saturn says it all
saturn
Think Saturn version just edges it but both look playable
Car PS1 Type-1?? Saturn Type-RS. I have no idea why Sony not put RS instead of Type-1 , 2, 3..
Man this is really close but the Saturn version does stutter a bit, and the car textures seem a bit more detailed on the PlayStation, but the Saturn vehicle is zoomed out a bit more, and the draw distance on the Saturn seems a tad further, the PlayStation also has no perspective correction, and has warping in textures, while the Saturn doesnt...,overall there practically the same
Very similar experience
This is better.
odd enough it appears the Saturn had better lighting effects on this and the bridges look better. PS1 Cars look better though. Why is the lighting for the street lights after the lights on the PS1?
I actually liked the dreamcasy version.
Pop in is a lot more noticeable on Saturn, typical shit shadow on Saturn, Dial hud is too big on PS1, though it is transparent on the PS1 and I like the camera been a bit closer on PS1.
Very close. To me Playstation just because the shadows aren't dithered.
