      Indeed. I'm glad the translators for Trails from Zero/to Azure got a job from the devs. Each of those games have more text than the LoTR book trilogy. Such a massive undertaking with no expectation to be compensated.

      They are. I used to do it. I never tackled a project as big as any of these RPGs, and let me tell you, it's hard work.
      I'm sure by now people have developed a lot of amazing tools to make some stuff easier, but when I did it you were literally opening a ROM in a hex editor and trying to make sense of it. We had tools to search for patterns which would HOPEFULLY reveal the font/text system. You'd find a word in the game, like "hello" and search for patterns in the ROM that had the same differences. H is the 8th letter in the alphabet. E is 5th, L is 12th, O is 15th, so the pattern there is --3, +7, +0, +3. So if you can find 5 bytes together with those differences, you may have just found the alphabet system in the game. So, apply a filter to the hex editor that says 0F=H, and extrapolate that below and above that value to map out the whole alphabet... you're still going to have to change stuff around and experiment a lot to find all the punctuation and special characters and weapon icons, and line breaks and other control characters...
      That's what you do for the very simplest of ROM hacks... what the people in the projects in these videos have done is likely about 20x more complicated than that.
      I haven't done it for MANY years, but some of the people who were doing it way back when I did are still at it and have really developed into professionals.
      But yeah, the level of work these guys do is nuts. It's really fun to crack the code and make it all work though, if you're into that sort of thing.

      @UltimateGamerCC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Wiegraf you dont need them, you start leveling up via the first battle then onward, the Leader has a spell called Egress, you kill all enemies but the main enemy, then you have the Leader cast Egress and start the battle over again.

    • @humanice2
      @humanice2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Wiegraf They level up naturally, they are very weak at the beginning, the strategy of the game is how you position your characters and use their abilities to your advantage, keep distance to avoid being surrounded, use potions and healing spells, for me the final boss of sceniario 1 was the most difficult battle in the game because of how few characters I recruited throughout the game, I played it a bit carelessly, buying items and going straight to battle and ignoring everything else. I finally finished scenario 1 tonight, starting scenario 2 tomorrow.

      What I want to know, is WTF happened with the music on every port and "upgrade" remaster? SegaCD (US) opening music makes the cinematic a thumping, exciting call to adventure. The others are like.. slow, smaltzy anime soap. And they replace most of the other absolutely rocking tracks. Just one of the best ever soundtracks, and every "upgrade" guts it completely. I prefered learning Japanese all by myself, so that I can play all Japanese games of history I want, instead of waiting for never coming translation patchs (or else, I could never have played "Tengai Makyou: The 4th Apocalypse" that I really, really enjoyed it, and I think that there are many other games on obscure systems like PC-98 that will never be translated). But those new translation patchs on Saturn are very good news.

    • @mariusamber3237
      @mariusamber3237 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      PC-98 is so obscure in the West that even fewer people know/care about it than about learning Japanese, and that's already few enough. I hope translation AI will reach a level one day where on-screen translation for those difficult Asian languages will be acceptable instead of mediocre, like right now, and I say that also from perspective of someone who knows Japanese to some degree... it's generally not worth it to learn it 'just' for gaming, since most of those games were obscure even in Japan in the first place, and frankly, most retro stuff isn't that good anyway, and what is was usually localized (Sturgeon's Law totally applies to gaming). Well, not big franchises like Tengai Makyou or Sakura Wars, which are generally quite professionally made, but the PC-98 stuff - absolutely, a lot of it was just reprehensible. I think there's a PSP project going on for Tengai Makyou: The 4th Apocalypse, which makes sense seeing that PSP was a much more popular console in the West.

Finding hidden gems is always fun, even if there aren't many of them. I hope he keeps doing so for a long time to come.

      @Rudolphhhhhh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mariusamber3237 Learning Japanese for gaming is a very good reason (not more stupid than for work or something): this is my case, I am learning Japanese for 3 years especially for that goal, so that I will be not stucked by language barrier anymore (unless I am interested in some Korean, Chinese, or even Spanish games for example). 🙂
      Between PC-88/PC-98/MSX/X68000 games, PC Engine games, Saturn games, portable console games, Playstation games, Nintendo console games, PC games, and even actual games (for example, on Switch, the adventure game "Buddy Mission BOND" by KOEI/Nintendo is not translated), there are MANY games that are not translated.
      Until we did not play those games, we cannot know if they are "not that good" (but even if this is the case, it remains very interesting to discover for me). I think the "Sturgeon law" is irrelevant to the situation: even if 90% not localized games are bad, if there are thousands or dozen of thousands of games, it remains dozens, even hundreds of interesting games to discover, more than we can all discover in a single human life.
      About the AI, first, I am not sure it will be really fonctional until my death. But anyway, I do not like depending on "machines" for doing something. Besides, even the AI may not give me some "cultural elements" to really appreciate games than playing it in comprehensible Japanese.

    • @mariusamber3237
      @mariusamber3237 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rudolphhhhhh Well, Chinese I'd say is one of the best picks regardless of what you want to use it for. With Japanese, looking back at my own 5-year experience, I'm more hesitant to say the same thing (though I like the language itself). Most of the games I tried weren't really very good and I wouldn't play them without a speed-up button... especially nowadays that almost everything of note gets localized and you get pretty much all the big-hitters anyhow. Maybe I'm a bit jaded, but I wish for more really great games like some of the 90s gems... Fallout, System Shock 1 and 2, Jagged Alliance 2 and the like. A bit of a longing for my PC-gaming days, haha.
      Well, sure, I will give you that - there are some genres where you have to know Japanese to play absolutely all the best games (like VNs), but those are usually genres which are fairly niche in the West in the first place, and like you said - very unlikely you could play even just all the good stuff anyway. Either way, I'm also really happy about all those fan-translations popping up, because way, way more people will play those games that way. The Western markets are huge, and it's way easier to localize/fan-translate games from English into other European languages, even if it can be a telephone game (I recall reading about the bad first translation of Final Fantasy 7 into Spanish!). Everyone can make that choice on their own though, naturally. So, that's that. :)

      @@jamesyu5212 Not for the Saturn, which is the topic of this video. Grandia used the English Playstation 1 script, as an example. Others have been painstakingly hand translated and localized, like Bulk Slash.
      I can't think of any Saturn translations that were just run through an AI algorithm, except recent talk about doing Baroque that way as a proof of concept, playable beta patch (all text is stored as images, so fully translating to English in the provided space would be extremely difficult anyway).
      I'm not refuting anything "obvious" because I have been following this scene closely for years and I know what those people have put into it. You're making it seem like this trival thing - just put the script through google translate! But that is not anything close to what has actually been done.
      A lot of these games don't even have a text script you can copy and paste into an AI, it's all saved into image tiles which then have to be manually translated pixel by pixel into English. Or worse, hard coded into a video file.

    As always, this is a great and informative video. Some of these translations are nothing short of equal to, or better than many early official localizations. The full on English dub of Bulk Slash, along with accurate subtitles, is insanely good. What really surprised me was Grandia. Having purchased it as an import game, it was never playable for me due to the lack of English subtitles. The PlayStation version wasn’t the same at all visually. It had lifeless water effects, a lack of building shadows, and mirrored sprites with less animation.
    Thanks to the new English Saturn fan translation version of Grandia, the bad port of the PS1 version on Steam isn’t needed. The emulated Saturn version of Grandia, running on Kronos, or YabaSanshiro, looks much better than the official HD port, which was actually supposed to use the Saturn graphics as a base, with the PS1 version’s English dub and subtitles.

    The Saturn has recently become one of my favorite consoles of all time. I was a Genesis kid who never had a Saturn (N64 instead) and then went to Dreamcast. I always felt screwed as a USA Dreamcast owner who saw so many games left in Japan. However Saturn owners had it so much worse. So many amazing games left in JP. Bulk slash now translated is one of my favorite games of all time. It's a short game with a ton of replayability and grinding for nice rewards. I recently started Sakura wars and it's a bit up my alley more than you, But I understand that's not for everybody. Sega of America really should have jumped on the JRPG craze of the mid to late 90s and brought games over. They wouldn't have beat PlayStation, but would have 100% done better than they did on the west. N64 left a big hole for RPG/2d game fans.
