@@PJxBuchwild It goes to show the power of advertising, especially when you're a kid. You know, now that you mention it I don't remember seeing any Dreamcast games at my local Blockbuster or Hollywood video either.
2D and 3D hardware are similar in design. Both do the same thing, 3D just has additional features of scaling, rotating, etc. 5th gen consoles are the only case where 2D and 3D were a separate design. At that point hardware had still heavily limited processing power and designing 2D-focused chip allowed to push significantly more sprites. In case of Dreamcast and later consoles, 3D hardware got so powerful that it could process more data than any previous 2D console while having at least 6x times more RAM. Saturn and earlier consoles had really limited 2D capabilities. They could deliver great 2D graphics, but only if developers followed strict rules. Starting with 6th gen hardware developers could put pixels anywhere at any time. Such hardware allowed for older techniques like tilemaps, that were simulated by textured quads. Multiple big textures could be used a multi-layered framebuffers and there were sprites (as textured quads) on top. Everything could be scaled, rotated and have other transformation applied. The only thing that Dreamcast and newer hardware lost was palette tricks, since graphics was generated in 24-bit color palette. It was possible to simulate palette tricks, but it wasn't free like it was on older hardware. Also keep in mind that 2D isn't lightweight technique. PS4 and Xbox One were the first consoles that could do almost unlimited low-res Pixel-art. They still required some optimizing especially with heavy transparency scenes. However there are scenarios when PS5 and Xbox Series X won't keep 60 fps in pixel-art graphics.
On a small screen and LCDs the Dreamcast looks better. However, a huge number of 2D games on Dreamcast were artificially pushed to 480i/p output which made them blocky and pixelated compared to their Saturn counterparts at 240P. Be sure to check if the game you’re interested in does this and doesn’t include some sort of scan line options
Whatever capture you used for the Saturn did not do it justice I can confirm that the lighting for all these games are not that dark and are on par with the Dreamcast
Can't help to be impressed all over again, by what the Saturn is doing with Street Fighter Alpha 3 - it looks amazing even by today's standards for this type of game. Beautiful artwork. 😍
Great video. How bittersweet the Dreamcast period was. Sega finally did it and delivered everything hardcore gamers wanted but the casual gamer didn't care or notice.
@@RetroComparisons I must admit that for years I had a lot of resentment towards the casuals who suddenly became gamers when the PlayStation was released. They were now deciding what failed or succeeded. It was the end of the old ways. They had no knowledge of the gaming past really. It's a lesson that a company can make a great, A+ product but people might not buy it.
@@simon41978 Yeah that's the unfortunate reality. Just because something is great doesn't mean it's popular in any medium whether it be games, music, movies, etc.
Nah even the casuals loved the Dreamcast, sega just bombed so hard with their decisions from 95-98 that they were losing major money despite the Dreamcast selling very well in North America
The Sega Saturn is still extremely competent, especially when it comes to 2D graphics. But Daytona USA CCE, Virtua Cop 2 and the soccer game still look pretty good, all things considered.
I used an OSSC at 4x for the 240p games. I didn't really notice it until I started getting some comments about it but I think something went wrong when uploading as I've used some of this same footage in other videos from the Saturn and it looks way better.
You can see proper SS usage in 3D with Virtua Cop 2, which stand still against a conversion made for a console (DC) probably 20x times more powerful in 3D. Of course Daytone Usa SS conversion was done with next to no knowledge of SS hw, ence the bad clipping & 20fps (which was addressed already with the next AAA racer, Sega Rally, and later releases)
Yea, Daytona with its large sweeping vistas and multiple cars was not a good fit for Saturn hardware, it crippled it. Sega Rally was a smart move, only short draw distances needed due to short straights and lots of turns, not to mention only 2 or 3 cars on screen at any one time helped big time. The team who made Crash on PS1 made the same smart move with twisting corridors.
As a Genesis kid I love how they kept the basic design of the 6 button controller and added shoulder buttons. It made playing ports like NBA Jam TE feel like an easy transition from one generation to the next.
Both the Saturn and Dreamcast were missed opportunities due to the arrogance of Sega of Japan. I really enjoyed both systems and if things were done differently with them, then I think Sega could still be around today as a contender to the existing trio.
Asteroids takes the graphics cup once again!!!!!! Damn this game looks badass with its vibrant colors, high quality vector graphics, and lightning frame rate!!! Daaaay e tooonaaaa, the Dreamcast this this game so good. I did not know my fav Street Fighter game was on Dreamcast. Loooove Street Fighter Alpha 3. Dang and Virtua Cop 2! I loved that game, played the heck out of it on Saturn. Awesome showing even there were many lazy ports. Freakin love the Dreamcast and wish I had it still! Nice work on this one man!
Hahaha once again you should stop after Asteroids because it's unbeatable. Daytona USA looks like crap compared to an unaltered Asteroids port. Street Fighter Alpha 3 is such a badass game and looks great on both. I've gotta give the overall win to Virtua Cop 2 just because I love that series so much. When I got a Saturn in the early 00's the first Virtua Cop was the first game I went out to buy. Oh man I forgot you don't have a Dreamcast anymore. I hope you can get your hands on one for a decent price some day.
@@RetroComparisons I have to agree with your overall winner being Virtua Cop 2, such an amazing game that ported so very well to home systems. Honorable mention would be Asteroids followed by Daytona. lol I saw one comment about the Saturn being a bit more washed out or dull, didn't really stand out until Sonic the Hedgehog was played. Anyway it was interesting AND the game on Dreamcast looked way better than any version I had seen. Not sure why but it was an interesting thing.
@@mikec3260 Lol! I mean Asteroids has to be top 3 on any list. So I was getting some more Saturn footage last night and it looks great on my TV so I think something went awry when this got compressed to youtube. I didn't understand what people were saying but it looks worse on here than it does on my uncompressed finished video. Very strange as I've never seen it be the drastic before.
Just curious but are these captures from actual console hardware? Or through emulation? I ask because in some of the smaller, less complicated games I noticed the sound was not what it should be (for instance the game columns). One of the two consoles had music that didn’t sound as it should and imo being that both of these consoles had more power than the Sega Genesis (which has really great sound) then my immediate thought must be that one or both of these consoles was emulated as that usually is the reason for differences in sound or graphics. At least in my experience.
Yep these are all from actual hardware. The Saturn is running through the OSSC with a SCART cable and the Dreamcast is using the VGA output via the DCHDMI. A lot of these games including Columns are part of compilations so it's possible that's why they sound off. Or I have a bad .bin/.cue file.
@@RetroComparisons ah ok. Yeah I could see how compilations might sound differently. Kind of like when Final Fight (or many Sega CD games) were reworked for the Sega CD add on. Makes sense..
Great comparison, Bill. I was a few years late to both the Saturn and Dreamcast parties (Summer '99 for a new, discounted Saturn at a closing K-Mart and May '01 for the Sonic Adventure + Sonic Shuffle Dreamcast bundle at Wal-Mart), but I did want both in their launch early days but just couldn't afford to get either then (I could have bought the DC with my summer and part-time jobs, but then I never would have built my late-'99 PC, which helped lead me more towards my career). I don't know why, but I'm just not as keen on the Saturn as I used to be, even though I bought a Pro Action Replay 4-in-1 cart and imported a fair games when I got to college in fall '01 and over the next few years. I loved it, and I still do love it, but it's dropped down from my favorite system of all time. I still play it sometimes, and I do love it...man, I wanted it so bad at the time. But, I definitely play the Dreamcast more, and I also play the N64 that my sister and I got at Christmas '97 more. I don't know why...I've got a lot of games I love on the Saturn, and I wouldn't trade the experiences I had with it with friends in those days late high-school and college days for anything. But...I generally just prefer the Dreamcast and wish it could have lived longer. Some spots where the Saturn wins, IMO, is Columns (the Saturn version has the broader color palette of the arcade System C2 release), Phantasy Star 2 and Sonic (besides Virtua Cop 2 and Sega Swirl, the Smash Pack games on the DC are...less-than-good), Outrun (60fps is a great option on the Saturn), Twinkle Star Sprites (Saturn has more everything though admittedly I've barely played the DC version, which I don't own; I own the import on Saturn due to Mark at RetroCore's recommendations around 20 years ago...really fun game), and the original Saturn release of Daytona USA (I much prefer how it controls over the Daytona CCE on Saturn and Daytona USA 2001 on DC; however, saying that, the Dreamcast is definitely the winner in content and presentation, plus it was really fun online the little bit I got to play in '01; dad, my sister, my friends, and I had fun playing it over the summer; and we had fun in the dorms with it too for a while). Many of the others are effectly ties (though Cleopatra Fortune depends on whether you prefer the original pixel art or the 480p-remade art...I like both).
I have no comment on the Japanese-only games that require better knowledge of the language than I have (and I took 3 semesters in college to satisfy my foreign language requirement...forgot that pretty fast lol) and that I've never played. IMO, the Dreamcast wins with Power Drift, the Smash Pack's Virtua Cop 2, and seems to be better with Super Street Fighter 2 X/Turbo (I've not played a ton of either port: in terms of home ports, I've played a lot more of the port in Street Fighter Collection on PS1 and the 3DO port since I own those and not the DC/Saturn ports...I prefer the non-Turbo Street Fighter II games, especially Champion Edition [also, I have SF Collection on PS1 not for Super/Super Turbo but for Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold).
But, aside from the super scalar ports, Virtua Cop, and Daytona, I think the biggest comparison point is Street Fighter Alpha 3. I bought my DC in May of '01 and Alpha 3 was one of the games I bought the same day. I had played the arcade version a few times, and I had played a ton of the game at my friend Josh's with the PSX port. When it came out and everyone online (mostly GameFAQs forums) were saying how arcade-perfect the port was, I wanted to import the Japanese Saturn port of Zero 3. But in '99-'00 that wasn't really a possibility for me. So, I was very excited to have the Dreamcast version, and it is much better than the PS1 port in all things, except maybe the World Tour changes...well, and except for the Dreamcast d-pad absolutely eating up your thumb. At first, I just had official controllers, but a couple weeks later I ended up picking up some MadCatz DreamPad controllers with a 6-button layout from EB based on some online recommendations. Those didn't murder your thumb at least, but I'm also not a fan of the very 'meh' d-pad design on those either. I ended up ordering a Total Control 3 adapter from lik-sang to use a Saturn pad on the system, but since I only ever ordered 1 of them, someone always had to play with either an official DC pad or one of the MadCatz ones. There's some hate for the DC port online, but it's a nice port with the graphical data properly resized for the 320/640-wide resolution to maintain the correct aspect ratio of the sprite and tile-work.
Buuuut...in some ways the DC version is innaccurate to the arcade and inferior to the Saturn version. And, for that, I'm going to give a slight nod to the Saturn version. Part-way through my first year there in college in '01-'02, someone traded a copy of Zero 3 for the Saturn in at the local import and used-game shop down on the other side of town.
I had already bought one or two import Saturn games there (Macross Do You Remember Love was my first, and I think I had bought Dead or Alive by then) along with an Action Replay 4-in-1. I paid a bit over $80 for it, which is probably a good price these days but was rough for me then (don't spend all of your summer-saved-money, part-time job cash, and excess student loan money on games, mmmmkay, young'ens: you'll thank me later).
It would have been really great if SEGA had released an enhanced version of Burning Rangers on the Dreamcast. Why is the Sega Saturn captures contrast like this, the blacks and color definition are actually really bad. Couldn't you notice this while capturing (if you actually capture all games) and while editing?
I'm using a high quality scart cable going to the OSSC at a 4x output. I'll have to watch some other videos with a similar setup. Maybe there's something off with the settings on the OSSC?
dreamcast was the first console that really pushed 3d graphics. first time you can really see details in faces and clothes on characters and more. what a beast.
Not really. Just look at character models in Virtua Fighter 2, Anarchy in the Nippon and Dead or Alive for the Sega Saturn, or Perfect Dark and Turok 3 for the Nintendo 64. I get it that Soul Calibur still looks fantastic and is way ahead, but the right programmers were able to add lots of details on Saturn and N64 games too, when they knew what they were doing.
@@RetroComparisons I also just realized that the Ferrari logo is inverted depending on whether you turn left or right. I imagine that for reasons of software space optimization.😆😆😆
It's on the Sega Smash Pack compilation along with some other Genesis games but as a heads up it's not very good. All of the games are emulated and they're not emulated well especially when it comes to the audio.
I thought so personally but I've been seeing a lot of comments saying otherwise. I use a high quality scart cable going to an OSSC upscaling it at 4x so I thought I was getting the best possible quality outside of maybe the extra benefits of the Retrotink 5x.
dude I love the idea of your videos and the work that comes with it, but I can't grasp why do the audio like this. there's no easy way to compare them and it makes my headphones drive me crazy. may I suggest panning from one to the other during the section of each game?
Thanks for checking this out! I appreciate the suggestion. This is one of the most divisive things on my channel where everyone seems to either love or hate that the audio is split hard left and hard right. I don't have these particular games as separate videos but for a majority of the compilations that I do there are short individual videos for each game where I have 30 seconds of each port before splitting them.
@@RetroComparisons maybe people who have balance knobs on their sound systems, but on headphones it's just objectively dissonant, especially when the games "desync". and on a mobile speaker it's indistinguishable. I truly believe you'd get a bigger audience by changing that. even if it's "divisive", people who hate it will not watch it for this reason (like me, unfortunately), but people who like it certainly won't leave if you change it.
It would be great if there could be an indie scene for the Saturn like there is for the Dreamcast, the Saturn was a great system. I miss having my Saturn.
That would be awesome! From what I've heard it's hard to develop for that system so we'll sadly never have the same robust homebrew scene for that the way we do for the Genesis or Dreamcast.
@@RetroComparisons yeah, it's because of how it has the 2 processors on it that make it more of a challenge to program for. What's interesting, though, it's that the jaguar also was a bit more complex to program for, but there are some indie games for it.
@@mattnordsell9760 That's cool that there's a scene going on for the Jaguar. Between the complicated hardware and the fact it was never popular to begin with makes it that much more surprising. But then again, the Saturn is only 32 bits and the Jaguar is 64, do the math. On an unrelated note, no no, I wasn't one of those kids that fell for advertising like that, of course not...
@@RetroComparisons i don't know of there being too many games that have been made for the jaguar, but I do know there have been some that have been covered by some retro tubers.
This was a shorter list than I thought it would be, and a huge amount of what is here are ports of much older games each of them happened to tackle in their own way. When Sega left the Saturn period behind, they really didn't look back! (By comparison, a "Wii U vs. Switch" video would be two hours long and for the most part indistinguishable between the two consoles. Sega took a fantastic but commercially disastrous console generation and buried it; Nintendo chose to recycle it instead.) There was also just not a lot of overlap between the two consoles time-wise -- there was an actual large gap of at least a year if not more in North America, but even in Japan where Saturn did much better, I think Sega moved on quickly once Dreamcast was announced and didn't continue to make a lot of Saturn games like they did in the previous generation. Unsurprisingly, the biggest standout differences here occurred in the more demanding 3D games, which were absolutely the Dreamcast's forte and were absolutely NOT the Saturn's. The original "Daytona USA" is probably the most glaring improvement, though Saturn Daytona was a rush job and hardly Sega's best home console work. The "Daytona: Championship Circuit Edition" showed how the Saturn could look with a bit more time and programming know-how, and the difference there, while still noticeable, was less glaring. "Virtua Cop 2" looked very good on both systems, but better on Dreamcast, while the 2D games from Capcom were basically identical. I did find the very subtle upgrades in the Japan-only RPGs and visual novels to be an interesting touch -- probably a small courtesy that would make gamers feel like they were getting a little something extra when they bought an older game for the newer console. This period of gaming history is filled with both a lot of nostalgia for me and a lot of "woulda, coulda, shoulda"s I'd like to time-travel to shout at Sonic's handlers, but I can appreciate it for all that it was.
I really thought there would have been a lot more overlap too but when you stop and think about it you're right, there was like a year of almost nothing coming out on the Saturn before the Dreamcast at least in North America and Europe. The Saturn had some awesome games but it doesn't carry the same nostalgia for the general population as the Genesis and doesn't have the horsepower of the Dreamcast so it's still kind of lost today. It would have been interesting to see what the Saturn was capable of had there been a full focus on the console until around 2000. The woulda, coulda, shoulda is strong with this console. I know everything was going 3D at the time but we could have had something on par with Sonic Mania or SOR 4 twenty years before they came out.
A similar thing happened with the switch from the OG Xbox to the Xbox 360 for Microsoft, suddenly no Xbox games were being released at all, similar story with Gamecube. While PS2 still had games released for it well into 2007-2009 and some beyond even (mostly sports games).
@@MoonOvIce It's weird how there was so much crossover between the NES to SNES but then after that there were only a handful of cross ports from the SNES to N64 and N64 to GC. There were a lot for the GC to Wii but that's a little more understandable considering the Wii was almost a glorified GC with motion controls.
Unlike how the Genesis vs PS1 comparisons showed the Genesis to actually outclass the newer PS1 in several cases, this comparison shows the newer Dreamcast almost always outclassing the older Saturn. Interesting difference. These videos must be very time consuming. The work required to put out this video is noted and I thank you.
The Dreamcast was a huge step up and with the 480p output I think they still look great to this day. These are very time consuming but with so many people enjoying these it's totally worth it. Thank you so much for watching because it really means a lot to me:)
Genesis was competition with Nintendo not PlayStation. It was the genesis vs Super Nintendo. What Genesis games were better than any PlayStation game graphics wise?
@@RetroComparisons Just wish the Dreamcast had the same amount of buttons as the Saturn. It closed off a ton of extra ports it could have gotten. I could have forgiven the rushed release if the controller wasn't such a huge downgrade. D-Pad is actually pretty good to use though, despite how it appears. It has the trademark membranes SEGA is known for that makes diagonals feel like butter.
With the Sega Smash Pack on Dreamcast. You'd be forgiven that the music in the games on this collection sound like it was a bad American Genesis game soundtrack done in the Gems sound engine.
Daytona USA of course looks better on the Dreamcast but I don't like how the rear tires look on the Dreamcast version it looks silly. However that is how it looks on the Arcade version too so...
I'm a little surprised at how good Daytona USA: Championship Edition looks on the Saturn. Obviously it is better on the Dreamcast but it looks better than I thought it could on the Saturn especially compared to Daytona USA.
Has nobody ever wondered why on earth sega rereleased those same old 16bit classic arcade games on both the sega saturn and dreamcast??? If you already had many of those games on both the genesis and 32X, then why would you ever want those games on those nextgen systems??? I just don’t get it what sega was thinking no matter how really good those conversions are. What sega should,ve done was focussing more on translating their 2D games into the 3th dimension. Even atari and nemco are guilty doing the same thing by putting their 8bit classics on both nextgen systems wich is a shame because at the time everybody was into 3D,so why focussing on old classics?? As if they had nothing better to do and just throught “ we don’t have the time and efford to make new games for those systems and we don’t know how to fully utelize those systems but we don’t wanna let gamers in the dark with no games so let’s bring those old games to the table” And with that in mind 1996,1997,1998,1999 felt like to be in the “i don’t what to do but let’s have deal with the old shit we already have and try to have fun with it” age. In all seriousness that’s how it felt like to me at the time, i already believed that the best part of the 90’s were over. 1990 was boring but It was 1991 till 1995 wich were those heeey moments in my life🥲
Looks like the capture of Saturn is not properly normalized... If it's from S-Video, it should expand the range from limited(Y16-235, C16-240) to full(0-255) If it's from RGB, then the signal probably not terminated properly or have wrong impedance matching, all Sega consoles before Dreamcast have out of standard signal level and impedance... I had to make a conversion board to feed the signal from my Mega Drive into my Sony Trinition WEGA CRT TV...
No one was buying either of these consoles to play ports of atari arcade games or 3 in a row gem drop games to be fair,. A lot of these Japanese rpg games look very interesting.
The only differences I can notice is that Dreamcast is brightest, sharpest and sometimes a bit more fluid than Saturn, other than that, they are identical.
Yeah that one is kind of a grey area but since Dayton USA 2001 is a semi remaster of the original and Circuit Edition I didn't want to leave it off because I thought I may get called out on it if it wasn't in the video.

Kind of a rip off that they made you buy the same games again on a console 4 years later that were already old games on the saturn and some of them look worse?
In a lot of cases too, the Saturn outdid the Dreamcast for buttons. I am sure the reason they didn't shift the SotN port over to Dreamcast was because it lacked the necessary buttons to play the game, unless they had made the code from the ground up to incorporate a hold feature for transformations. But I still find it ridiculous that the Dreamcast had fewer buttons. If not a second joystick, at least have bumpers. People said the GameCube had very little already. It is no wonder nobody wanted to bring games over to the Dreamcast.
The saturn 3d capability was added when the console almost launch since it need to compete ps1 3d that why it was so difficult to programs and the fact they gave 3rd parties developer not so great kit to optimize the game but some developer that did pull it was looking way better than ps1 game like panzer dragoon 2
Why on earth did sega ported many of their arcade games to both the dreamcast and sega saturn if many of those arcade games could be also played on the genesis??? Whether it’s outrun, power drift, space harrier, after burner or sonic the hedge hog etc,,, Why would sega had believed that they could make some cheap cash grabbing money games by simply porting some of their old arcade games to those machines??? ,they should,ve saved that time & money for making atleast 32bit and 128bit versions of it and/or to be a sequal to it, Am mean just imagine if you just bought a sega genesis (including the 32X and sega CD),sega saturn and dreamcast to only play those old arcade games on it,well then i feel very sorry for you because why would you ever want to spend 4 times the same amount of money for something you already own🙁
They had the GTA V model down 20 years before Rockstar lol. The Saturn had a lot of arcade or Genesis ports sold as 1 or 2fers that I hope were heavily discounted. The Dreamcast at least had a lot of these games on compilation discs like Yu Suzuki Game Works Vol 1 or Sega Smash Pack Vol 1 so I could see those being worth it. Well maybe not Sega Smash pack as that emulated Genesis games pretty terribly.
They are three completely different games. Original Daytona Saturn conversion. Championship Circuit Edition on Saturn and Daytona USA 2001 on Dreamcast. The first Saturn port is closet to the arcade original. The second Saturn game handles the best and the Dreamcast game has the best visuals unsurprisingly and you can sort the handling by adjusting sensitivity in the options. It's kind of like Daytona 1.5
@@robsmall6466 I completely disagree. The original Saturn Daytona port is what Virtua racing on the Mega Drive was to the Arcade. Everything could be scaled, rotated and have other transformation applied.
The only thing that Dreamcast and newer hardware lost was palette tricks, since graphics was generated in 24-bit color palette. It was possible to simulate palette tricks, but it wasn't free like it was on older hardware.

On a small screen and LCDs the Dreamcast looks better.
That port in particular does age so well
Great video. How bittersweet the Dreamcast period was. Sega finally did it and delivered everything hardcore gamers wanted but the casual gamer didn't care or notice.
Exactly. It's finally getting the love it deserves but I wish that happened when it was relevant.
@@RetroComparisons
I must admit that for years I had a lot of resentment towards the casuals who suddenly became gamers when the PlayStation was released.
Yeah if those were the only versions of the game I think they'd still be popular because they're good enough.
something is off about the capture of the Saturn.... what did you use to capture the Saturn.... retrotink? framemeister?
I used an OSSC at 4x for the 240p games. I didn't really notice it until I started getting some comments about it but I think something went wrong when uploading as I've used some of this same footage in other videos from the Saturn and it looks way better.
I wanted to do this myself with 2 monitors but stumbling on this video is super helpful! Thanks!
I appreciate you checking this out:)
Dreamcast was such a beast. Still love it.
Dreamcast resolution and image processing is AMAZING!
I can’t believe how good those animations look on J League Pro Soccer Club.
Great video ! 👍
The Dreamcast was ahead of its time... I LOVED THAT CONSOLE TO DEATH
2d games were far more enjoyable on the Saturn, if only because of the Dreamcast's awful controller.
As a Genesis kid I love how they kept the basic design of the 6 button controller and added shoulder buttons. It made playing ports like NBA Jam TE feel like an easy transition from one generation to the next.
If I'm not mistaken all of the old arcade games on these machines were ports rather than emulation.
Hmm that's interesting. I just assumed they were emulation so that's cool that they're actual ports.
@@RetroComparisons I COULD be mistaken, but the lack of glitches make me think they're ports.
Honorable mention would be Asteroids followed by Daytona. lol
I saw one comment about the Saturn being a bit more washed out or dull, didn't really stand out until Sonic the Hedgehog was played.
Thanks for watching:)
@@shotgunl I give up...will this even post?
It would have been really great if SEGA had released an enhanced version of Burning Rangers on the Dreamcast.
Why is the Sega Saturn captures contrast like this, the blacks and color definition are actually really bad. Couldn't you notice this while capturing (if you actually capture all games) and while editing?
Very strange. My original Saturn on a CRT doesn't look so dim and muted like these videos do. Saturn Emulator?
@@james2175i agree with OP, i had a saturn and N64 and while i loved the 64 , the dreamcast graphics were a huge step up for 3D gaming.
The Ferrari logo has been removed from the car of Outrun Dreamcast 😄😄😄

@@RetroComparisons I also just realized that the Ferrari logo is inverted depending on whether you turn left or right. I imagine that for reasons of software space optimization.😆😆😆
Sonic 1 Dreamcast? Its that a part of collection? Where can I buy it for Dreamcast?
It's on the Sega Smash Pack compilation along with some other Genesis games but as a heads up it's not very good. All of the games are emulated and they're not emulated well especially when it comes to the audio.
@@RetroComparisons Is the emulation good?
@@Bjoern020184 By today's standards not at all but for the time on a console maybe it was considered at least decent.
My saturn looks like that too. Is that just the way its supposed to be?. The reds and greens are like kinda muted. But some games look great.
The Dreamcast was AHEAD of it's time
Hardware isn't enough because it really comes down to who dose the ports that determines how well they look, sound and run on each platform.
The dreamcast was a beastly system
Two of the best machines of all time, home to some of the best games of all time.
Absolutely!
Cool

I'm a little surprised at how good Daytona USA: Championship Edition looks on the Saturn. Obviously it is better on the Dreamcast but it looks better than I thought it could on the Saturn especially compared to Daytona USA.
I think it's a pretty underrated port and the Saturn in general is pretty underrated.
As if they had nothing better to do and just throught “ we don’t have the time and efford to make new games for those systems and we don’t know how to fully utelize those systems but we don’t wanna let gamers in the dark with no games so let’s bring those old games to the table”
And with that in mind 1996,1997,1998,1999 felt like to be in the “i don’t what to do but let’s have deal with the old shit we already have and try to have fun with it” age.
In all seriousness that’s how it felt like to me at the time, i already believed that the best part of the 90’s were over.
1990 was boring but It was 1991 till 1995 wich were those heeey moments in my life🥲
The Dreamcast's graphics are obviously much brighter when it comes to 2 D games. But less well animated.
Primarily a result of the capture. Have played many of these on my own television and can confirm the Saturn can look equally as bright in many cases.
I see only they did not overwork most games, just run the old games on the new system.
Battlezone is barely playable on the Dreamcast (and I'm assuming the same on the Saturn), due to a lack of two thumbsticks.
Looks like the capture of Saturn is not properly normalized...
If it's from S-Video, it should expand the range from limited(Y16-235, C16-240) to full(0-255)
If it's from RGB, then the signal probably not terminated properly or have wrong impedance matching, all Sega consoles before Dreamcast have out of standard signal level and impedance... I had to make a conversion board to feed the signal from my Mega Drive into my Sony Trinition WEGA CRT TV...
If Sega reproduces Saturn and Dreamcast as minis, Sega will earn a lot. Both systems were great. It's pity sega is out from console market.
That would be incredible if they did that especially if they include some previously unreleased games.
No one was buying either of these consoles to play ports of atari arcade games or 3 in a row gem drop games to be fair,. A lot of these Japanese rpg games look very interesting.
But they are in japanese language.
You forgot Vampire Savior. What did you us to capture the Saturn? My Saturn with S-Video looks better than that.
The only differences I can notice is that Dreamcast is brightest, sharpest and sometimes a bit more fluid than Saturn, other than that, they are identical.
The 480p output really made the Dreamcast visuals pop.

Most modern phones can emulate the Dreamcast easily and somewhat the Saturn but the Saturn is harder to emulate
Por fin sega sacó una versión decrnte del daytona usa con la dreamcast, los dos de saturn fueron muy malos gráficamente hablando.
Yeah I love that version of Daytona.
Daytona USA had an awful draw distance on Saturn
In a lot of cases too, the Saturn outdid the Dreamcast for buttons. I am sure the reason they didn't shift the SotN port over to Dreamcast was because it lacked the necessary buttons to play the game, unless they had made the code from the ground up to incorporate a hold feature for transformations.
But I still find it ridiculous that the Dreamcast had fewer buttons. If not a second joystick, at least have bumpers. People said the GameCube had very little already. It is no wonder nobody wanted to bring games over to the Dreamcast.
Cropped Atari games on the Dreamcast? Are you kidding me? Even the Saturn is full screen.
The saturn 3d capability was added when the console almost launch since it need to compete ps1 3d that why it was so difficult to programs and the fact they gave 3rd parties developer not so great kit to optimize the game but some developer that did pull it was looking way better than ps1 game like panzer dragoon 2

your Saturn capture is very dim which ruins it

Why on earth did sega ported many of their arcade games to both the dreamcast and sega saturn if many of those arcade games could be also played on the genesis???
Whether it’s outrun, power drift, space harrier, after burner or sonic the hedge hog etc,,,
Why would sega had believed that they could make some cheap cash grabbing money games by simply porting some of their old arcade games to those machines??? ,they should,ve saved that time & money for making atleast 32bit and 128bit versions of it and/or to be a sequal to it,
Am mean just imagine if you just bought a sega genesis (including the 32X and sega CD),sega saturn and dreamcast to only play those old arcade games on it,well then i feel very sorry for you because why would you ever want to spend 4 times the same amount of money for something you already own🙁
They had the GTA V model down 20 years before Rockstar lol.
I mean technically the Dreamcast is 32 bit as the CPU in it is a 32 bit CPU. No such thing as a 128 bit console. Same goes for the Gamecube and Xbox

Dreamcast's color pallete is much better than Saturn's. Even if the games are identical, they're going to look better on Dreamcast.
the Sega Saturn footage is compressed...
..and people argue that Daytona was better on the Saturn 🤦🏻
They are three completely different games. Original Daytona Saturn conversion. Championship Circuit Edition on Saturn and Daytona USA 2001 on Dreamcast. The first Saturn port is closet to the arcade original. The second Saturn game handles the best and the Dreamcast game has the best visuals unsurprisingly and you can sort the handling by adjusting sensitivity in the options. It's kind of like Daytona 1.5
@@robsmall6466 I completely disagree. The original Saturn Daytona port is what Virtua racing on the Mega Drive was to the Arcade. It plays similar but looks awful and the 20fps gameplay was an early nail in die coffin for our beloved Saturn.

Saturn has much more bright than this for example daytona usa totally desconfigured the monitor bright, comparison tendecious
드림캐스트 진짜 잘 만든 게임기였는데 플스2 그 구라 스펙 때문에
Ridiculous comparison....we see old or Emulation of games ....DC has soo much better hardware
Only Outrun wins on Sega Saturn, just for Ferrari Testa rossa, due to Ferrari Copyrights held by SEGA at time....
