As far as I know, this is the full list of Saturn 3D platformers: Croc, Ninpen Manmaru and Ninja JaJaMaru-kun. There are several 2.5D and isometric platformers, but that is all in terms of *true* 3D platformers. Tomb Raider has some platforming in it but is really an action/adventure game overall. Burning Rangers also could be considered to have some platforming but is overall action/ 3rd person shooter. Very heavily edited this post since my original was actually horribly inaccurate. Also added 2 Japanese exclusives I originally missed. So yeah, there are a whole lot less 3D platformers on Saturn then I thought!!!
Its it weird that I like that The Saturn's version is 20% zoomed in more than that of the PS1... make it makes you feel like you are really in the game
Another comparison that is much closer than I would have expected. I would give the edge to Playstation, thanks to its more luminous colors and balanced lighting. Saturn version has the exact same geometry, but the color palette is slightly smoothed out in places, watered down in others. In addition, the contrast is much higher, resulting in darker visuals in the underground stages. I think this is really a matter of artistic choice. The game's camera appears to be "zoomed in" a bit on the Saturn version as well, which I would chock up to artistic license. Really, my only problem with Croc are the tank controls, which are inexcusable in a post-Mario 64 world. If I could just walk around like Mario, I'd be happy. Yes, you can move around as is, but it's slower and more labored and not as much fun. Such controls might work in a more cerebral game like Tomb Raider, but doesn't quite fit here. Overall, while PSX gets the better Croc, Saturn owners should be pretty happy at having a quality 3D platformer. The differences between these two are very slight, far less than most gamers in 1997 would admit. Nintendo 64 fans, of course, would just laugh and go back to playing Banjo Kazooie.
and ps1 has a tad bigger screen. While Saturn is smaller and it's zoomed in while ps1 can handle a bit more zoomed out so more on screen going on from the background. 2D saturn wins. 3d ps1 wins
@@JustRememberWhoYoureWorkingFor Tank controls have the character turning his body to the left or right instead of running in that direction, then you press "up" to move forward. Pressing "down" makes you back up while still facing forward. While not the first game to use them by a long shot, Resident Evil made the control style famous. Before that, they were used mostly just for games where you controlled a tank (such as the Atari 2600 game Combat), thus why they're referred to as "tank controls" to begin with.

Just look at 10:18 for example! I think that looks way more athmospheric on the Saturn.
That is just a different choice of camera angle. The resolution is the same on both versions. Edit: Well maybe, but the Saturn glitches the edges of the textures less.
PSX was the lead platform here, so the game was going to look better on that console again. The Saturn version its pretty decent for what it is, but it simply the PS1 takes the cake here with higher res and better transparencies, along side the more stable fps. And no, PSX was not more powerful at 3D, it handled better because it was easier to develop, not because it was powerful, in fact, it was underpowered back then, but Sony always give great dev tools for the companies, but anyway, its clear that PSX wins this comparison. I had this game on my PS One two years ago, and its pretty good, if you can adapt to the cluncky control scheme and weird analog movement. Its a fun, and very underrated 90's platformer, and that's sad because it has a great soundtrack, nice graphics, and decent gameplay. I suppose that the resolution on PS1 is 512x240p as many standard PSX 3D games, and Saturn due to the dropping resolution, it probably renders at something like 352x224p or 320x240p... I wonder how Sonic X-Treme, Sonic Saturn and Croc 2 would looked on Saturn with more time of development, if it weren't cancelled :(
The saturn could be more powerful to deal with 2D, for the 3D the psx is more powerful, it has neither arguing against it. The PSX has better gpu, conversion of dedicated geometry and decoding and transparency by hardware, in addition to that it can illuminate textured polygons and saturn suffers with it, as well as many other things. When people think that saturn's hardware is better, they are not analyzing the in-depth system specs. The limitations of the game croc in saturn are not because the game is a port, but because saturn can not handle all the requirements of the game and then many things need to be adapted, the same thing applies to pandemonium and so many others.
TheUltimateSEGAman hardware wise, its no doubt more powerful than PSX, but on this game, PSX wins with better textures, high resolution and more stable fps, not to mention the nicer transparencies. The Saturn port was a good effort, but we know that it could be much better.
Nelson Julio Meloni the Saturn' VDP1 and VDP2 used with both CPU's properly give superior results than any PS1 game, the PS1 GTE its better when devs only use 1 CPU and not optimize both properly, like a capable developer, for example: Treasure and Team Andromeda. Not to mention that Saturn can push higher resolutions, more pixels on screen, more sprites, effects mainly with the VDP2, better polygon calculations (to avoid most of the time the texture warping, which isn't that common in comparison to the awful affine texture warping on Playstation, due to the lack of perspective correct texturing and a Z-buffer render), and had higher fill-rates. Everything on PS1 is much worse. PSX only had good graphic because it was popular at the time, and was easier to develop, but Saturn and N64 were on a league ahead the PS1 capabilities technically speaking. Nothing on the PSX can touch Radiant Silvergun, Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Saga, those games used PROPERLY the Saturn's dual Hitachi SH-2 (combined in parallel, give faster 3d rendering than playstation. 2x 28.6 mhz CPU vs 1 33.8 mhz CPU, there's no deny that PSX was significantly slower). Not to forgot that PSX had more dev kits on its lifespan, and Saturn only had less.
@@Crystallums the 3D engines are comparable. They mussed up the artist decisions a bit on much of the SAT port though. Thank you for admitting the PSX has a lower resolution. I noticed that's in almost every game. It uses it's 32col mode the whole time. PS2 also uses a lower none square pixel res which nobody notices.
@@iwanttocomplain Both are very good, but there are many color or artistic differences, perhaps it is due to the capabilities of each hardware itself. Although I think that the PS1 version could be a little more balanced.
@@Crystallums I'm curious, what would you change to balance the PSX version? I'm not seeing any better frame rates in this game. Argonaut haven't used any features or the 2nd cpu but they run about the same. The changes are for reasons we may never know.
Ok so I wasn't going insane when I played the Saturn version and the PS1 version back to back. The Saturn version does indeed have a SIGNIFICANTLY more zoomed in camera creating a sort of screen crunch effect. Also the Saturn version felt harder to control but that may be an extension of the fact it has that zoomed in viewport?
I'm gonna say the PS1 has a slight advantage with the camera being further behind Croc, but I don't think that's down to a hardware limitation on the Saturn, I think it was just programmed that way, although it appears the Saturn version is running at a slightly lower resolution, it's hard to say for sure. Also, the vibrant colours of the PS1 port definitely fit the style of the game, that's not to say the Saturn's moody visuals are bad, I think it looks better during the underground scenes and maps containing lava. Performance wise, they seem to be running at the same frame-rate. I'd have go for a draw here, but I'd personally like to pick up a copy for the Saturn due to the complete lack of traditional 3D platformers (Tomb Raider being action oriented, and I'm not sure how to describe Burning Rangers).
Their pretty much the same but for some reason the contrast seems really off on the saturn. Far as I can see geometry is pretty much the same there is an odd texture every now and again though.

the Saturn could actually do things like croc better, the hardware could do more than the ps1, but because the Saturn was incredibly hard to program 3d games for, most dev's didn't have the skill to get the job done.
The most logical explanation ever!
PS1 definitely wins! textures, colors, presentation, resolution and field of view are wider. Saturn is not bad but this takes the gray console.
Saturn is higher resolution.
@@iwanttocomplain Yes, but with worse textures and almost no lighting effects on the polygons.
Playstation wins in expected areas, but the Saturn game doesn't look like a bad version.
PS1 has the edge in this one. Better camera and the 3D seems a little bit more stable.
I'll vote ps1. Thanks, as always for making a great comparison video
The jumps at 3:45 are much easier on the Saturn
Just a regular game for the library of PSX, but for the Saturn Library it is one of the best platform games.
Ótimo game, ótima comparação
3:27 Why do saturn games often have contrast issues like this?
Besides some lighting in caves the 2 dont look that different.
The Saturn version's music is redbook audio. The PS1 port uses compressed music files. The tracks are longer on ps1, but I really do prefer the uncompressed audio of the Saturn version.
That is compressed cd-audio streaming. a hardware feature.
@@iwanttocomplain Isn't that what I just said? It probably uses .xa files. Haven't checked. Don't care enough to do so.
@@AfterBurnerTeirusu well it's like redbook audio. I think it's just streaming adpcm.
@@iwanttocomplain Too bad the ps1 sound chip is a bit... dull. Proper Redbook would have sounded better.
@@AfterBurnerTeirusu No idea why one would have it and one didn't given cd's all cost the same.
The PSX sound chip is fine and can do 16bit sound or streaming redbook (full quality cd audio).
PSX seems a bit more polished, can't go wrong either way tbh
The PS1 version is more polished looking. I owned it for Saturn years back and it was a bit dull, also some graphics were quite unstable and would freak out.
Looks like the PS version has slightly better textures but overall pretty much the same.
Just bid on the Saturn version on ebay lol
💙Sonicroc💚
I dont agree the saturn version is better to me even the end level screens the text has wonderful effects colours which is missing in the psx version the saturn version colours have more depth and it's bigger main char. also the lighting is better and bright. Croc is allways bigger on the saturn making it more n64 like mario.
Saturn ver looks nice, but bigger character is also accompanied with less view range, field of view. PS1 displaying more picture. Its like Fv command in quake. More also requires a little faster hardware
PS1 wins!
The biggest difference I notice is that the sprites are a lot bigger in the sega Saturn version and that the camera is more zoomed in towards croc then the PSX version where the camera is lagging behind much more
PS1 easy.
Uuuh, as a saturn fan.. I have to say, crap you're totally right.
@@zero-theaveragegamer1159 Saturn fan too. I never paid too much attention to the ps1 versions, now I see I don't really like them that much. I like close up polygons and dramatic colors rather than far away normal colors
2 awesome consoles. I didn't play this game... Just looking to it I see Saturn zoomed just this... Who has gaming experience with this I read they say PS version is better and more playable. So who am I to say more than them??
Saturn colors look more saturated. PS1 wins in my opinion. But that wouldn't stop me from buying the saturn version either
Developers didnt want to deal with the complex Sega saturn therefore CROC 2 was never released PS1 for the winn
The saturn could be more powerful to deal with 2D, for the 3D the psx is more powerful. The PSX has better gpu, conversion of dedicated geometry, video decoding and transparency by hardware, in addition to that it can illuminate textured polygons and saturn suffers with it, as well as many other things. When people think that saturn's hardware is better, they are not analyzing the in-depth system specs. The limitations of the game croc in saturn are not because the game is a port, but because saturn can not handle all the requirements of the game and then many things need to be adapted, the same thing applies to pandemonium and so many others.
the Saturn could actually do things like croc better, the hardware could do more than the ps1, but because the Saturn was incredibly hard to program 3d games for, most dev's didn't have the skill to get the job done. Getting the VDP1 and VDP2 to work together in such a way as to pull off something good was like trying to force the horse to drink from the water. Do-able, but hell on earth.
I meant is not representative of the true specifications of the system. The Saturn is more powerful hands down. Bernie rangers put any through the platform or on PlayStation to Chef
@@costumeninja1914 Nah, Burning Rangers does some interesting thing, but looks messy and unstable unfortunately...
@@raiverns9620 VDP1 will never match the Playstation GPU for polygons... VDP2 helps a lot in some cases, but can limit the type of 3D engine in many ways. When it comes to 3D, PlayStation is just superior. But Saturn is more interesting...
saturndual32 for polycount? Yeah, it could. But because of how the vdp1 drew polygons, it inherently couldn't could not do certain things in hardware the playstation could do without help from the vdp2, so i'll give you that.
They both look good. They both run good. What more can you say? Both consoles had their quirks. Two totally different architectures, amazing results.
The Saturn here defiantly looks better but on top of having a camera that's way to zoomed in, it also has a big more lag when jumping for some reason.
Long life to the Sega Saturn, the best.
I never had any console, I'm a PC dude. And I never played Croc even on PC. For me, the PS version looks much more better.
Saturn has WAY too much cropping.
PS1 has higher quality models and textures, and the sky changes, but it's sometimes slower than Saturn.
PS1 also has better lighting.
Yeah, why is the Saturn version cropped in like that? Perhaps so it doesn't have to render as many polygons?
It's simply a much lower FOV, so it has to render fewer polygons on screen. PSX could render more polygons.
Funny...I bet you were a snes fanboy who never noticed how all the games were cropped in comparison to the genesis versions.
Saturn has better zoom
@Joshua Paul that’s not true
Playstation Wins.
Both
I think the Saturn has better sound. But the PSX version is smoother.
Now I'm a leet difference spotter I can see the PSX is in 32col mode and the SAT is in 40col mode. The Saturn lacks a 32col mode.
the saturn version looks really unfinished compared to the ps1 version
Is just me or Saturn looks kinda better on gameplay???
How about including PC version to comparison?
PSX wins this round rather easily. Although I was a huge PS guy back in these days Saturn IMO is more enjoyable today. That said if they were the 2 main consoles on the market again I would still take PSX.
Very amazing Sturn port. Seems it dont lack anything
UOOOOUU
Looks better on ps one imo
I like how even though you kept purposely being late to do something on the Saturn side, it STILL had better load speed than PS1.
I’m so glad I grew up with the PlayStation version
ps1 takes longer to load
PS1
For this game, I prefer Saturn version.
A jogabilidade deixa a desejar.
Well this is easy, Genesis Wins!!
Ps1 for the win this time

The controls of the dual anolog stick is better, but the old polygons got to go.
As much as I like the Sega Saturn, boy is that version ugly.
didn't see much of a difference really. mostly colors.
Veteran Child None of those old polygons aged well. Back in the day PlayStation was better because with dual anolog sticks allowed the player to look up and down and all around.
@@attilathehun0 game did not support dualshock on a real psx
@@attilathehun0 It was late invention, and the saturn had the 3d controller.

Wasnt aware 3D multiplatform games were so mich better on PS
Better graphics, sound, game-play and presentation The winner is Sega Saturn.
Sega wins, the controls were smoother/easier, I own both copies.
