Hard to watch but it's mild really, I must have a talk with two 1m paroons who attacked 1.5m piraiba

  • The 5ft / 1.5m piraiba got attacked by two 3.5ft / 1m paroon shark catfish, who were not supposed to be hungry but maybe it is the breeding season that drives them to doing things like this. Paroons do have a bad reputation from some peers of being outright killers and predators, which is coming more and more true with years in our own experience. They will need to be separated from tank mates and maybe even from each other at some point, if it continues like so.

    This is what makes the difference on keeping a specific fish in mind or keeping a community tank. But for me I wanted to focus more on one fish and that's what I did. No one has a massive piariba in home and u shouldn't lose urs brother to make ur mark! I'm sure u understand what I am talking about bud. Hopefully he heals well!

      Yea, it worries me too. I really need to get more large tanks, the sooner the better. Gotta find $10K to buy the front window for the unfinished 10K but such money don't lay around.

    Couldn’t it be a defensive attack? It’s difficult to believe they could eat a 50% bigger fish. Also, Piraíba can’t defend itself?

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No because no one attacks the paroons, except an occasional advance by the moody Jau boss. The paroons don't reason that way - can I or cannot swallow the prey - this is decided after the prey is killed. No, piraiba's mode of coping is flight.

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may be right. I tend to think this was rather a predatory attack, so if I feed them more, this may not repeat itself.

  • @zrass9
    @zrass9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The paroon shark is for me the most agressive catfish in the world . Iridescent shark are way more calm and gentle giant , they can live with smaller fish and wont eat them if you feed them well . I hope that what you did will be enough to stop attacking the piraiba .
    Not in the context : have you ever keep black ghost knife fish or aba aba knife fish ?

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paroon have the same personality as iridescent shark = timid. The huge difference IDS is utterly non-predatory while paroon is utterly predatory. How this coincides with timidness, IDK, but it does. My working hypothesis is paroons attack only for food and no other reason, except they maintain hierarchy with other paroons. ... We have had one BGK for the last 3-4 years. Never aba aba.

    These fish almost need a tank of their own. They're just too intelligent and aggressive to be kept

    I said it before, and I will say it again, if you insist on keeping predatory monsters like paroons, make them a tank of their own. You can't make yourself alpha in a world that isn't yours to reign in.

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you. Why hadn't you told me that before we rescued the 6 paroons in 2016? :) That may be true but we are still trying to ride out and balance this act, will try to feed them more as well. I wish the 10K was finished already. It takes years to build new large enough tanks. ... I don't know what this reigning accusation is about. I am trying to work with what is given and make the best of it. The result is extremely far from perfect, that's agreeable, but I'd like to think that on the scale of years we have been progressing.

    • @snowleopard1831
      @snowleopard1831 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No offense intended, you do amazingly well. I'm merely stating the obvious, you are a land dweller and cannot be inside that tank 24/7 to keep those monsters from killing each other.

    • @Fish-Story
      @Fish-Story  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the clarification. Now I get it. I thought it might have been sarcasm. Sorry. Yes, agreed. Everything I know about paroons tells me it was a predatory attack because they don't attack other fish for any other reason (except other paroons). So feeding more often than 1x a week should help.

      Right. Well, this is just experience based - after a stressful shake up fish tend to change their behavior. For how long - I address it in the video. The main idea is to feed them more and see if this solves the problem. Together with the initial shake up.
