Hey Jirard! It was a great video, but you might want to know that Sonic Advance was not actually developed by Sonic Team, but instead by Dimps, who made the entire Advance series as well as all of the Rush games.
Was looking for this comment! I follow another youtuber who is, himself, a dedicated Sonic fan and he did a nearly whole-series retrospective that included these games and he talked quite a bit about Dimps and their contributions to the franchise! The Geek Critique, if curious....He's also talked quite a bit about Donkey Kong Country and Metroid!
i feel people don't give amy enough credit in these games. i never once seen anyone mention all of her skills, while discussing this game. for example, you didn't mention that, if you hit springs with her hammer, the height the spring catapults you into the air doubles. additionally, while she can't jump into enemies the same way the others can, if you press b + down while in the air, she spins her hammer around herself, allowing her to damage enemies from above just as easily as any other character, while at the same time having the additional bonus of retaining her momentum and given her additional height, if she lands on top of an item box while spinning. honestly, given just how many useful abilities she has, she might even be one of my favourites to play as.
And this is something I never knew! I always thought Amy was supposed to be “hard mode” since she doesn’t have a spin jump and is vulnerable. Guess you can’t expect to know that when you’re 7.
I never actually played sonic advance, but me and my friends played an online flash game that used the assets. Hopefully sonic advance gets added to Switch online one of these days because they look like a blast
I really like the idea of the completionist checklist at the start. But the rating i think i enjoy better at the end, after hearing everything you went through to complete it
There actually is a save system in this game. Even when you reset the game, it saves which acts you've completed for each character. Just wanted to let you know!
I look forward to seeing you play the rest of these, because each game builds upon the last one really well, with new mechanics and creative level design
As someone who had 100% cleared all Sonic Advance titles back in the day, I can say that I love all the Sonic Advance titles and they did improve the design in Sonic Advance 2 & 3. These are amazing games and I wouldn't mind playing them all again! My favorite was Sonic Advance 3 though.
You don't have to beat the game in one sitting! The game saves after each and every act completion; you can then turn the game off and when you turn it back on, you get the stage select screen that lets you choose from any act you've started with that character.
An official rerelease of these games with a wider perspective, an official Sonic & Tails mode (not requiring a cheat, and Tails being able to carry Sonic), and Super forms for each character that can be used in normal zones would be really cool.
I like how we had a cast of sonic characters doing their usual thing in sonic advance and then we got to advance 2+3 with Cream and Cheese..the goddamn god of destruction lol
I remember playing the four player link cable part of the game with friends in second grade. Chasing them around trying to hold onto the chao until the end was so much fun.

I was lucky enough to own this on my GBA growing up. To this day it's still the only Sonic game I've ever beaten but I've probably beaten it about 20 times. I adore the art style, Sonic looks so cool here, and playing as Knuckles and Tails is super cool, but playing as Amy Rose bonking people with a giant hammer was my favorite.
This wasn't my introduction to Sonic but it was the first Sonic game I got to play myself, and for that I do remember it fondly. Nice to see it covered here.
It wasn’t my first Sonic game. However I noticed it in the game section back in the early 00’s and I had to have it. I was a Sega supporter who also had a GBC and GBA for Pokémon and only Pokémon. I was an extreme Nintendo HATER back then only liking Pokémon because of it being handheld. Dream Cast was on its deathbed and I needed something besides Sonic Adventure and playing Genesis games on that clunky Nomad that I got from Toys R Us that was also a battery eater. So when I seen Sonic was on a Nintendo handheld that I mostly just played Pokémon on I ended up getting it. It was so much fun! It was like a mash up of classic Sonic and modern Sonic except there wasn’t any differentiation between them back then other than 2D and 3D. And I really loved 2D Sonic gameplay and I loved the modern Sonic design. These and the Rush games for DS were truly special. Though Rush came out when I was nearly grown.
"In this game, the Chaos Emeralds are all shared by all four characters, so there's no need to collect all of them four times." What a fantastic design choice that I'm sure won't be royally fucked up in the sequel!
Man this makes me want to go back and replay the Advance trilogy again. Loved the simplicity of these games, more so the first one. Of course Advance 2 is better as a game, but to 100% complete...oh I am praying for you Jirad
I love the sonic advance series! It has gorgeous graphics and introduces Cream the Rabbit! I remember being on the computer and editing advance sprite sheets for hours!
Love Sonic Advance, just like almost all of his 2D games. Also, I like how he says "everyone is completing Tears of the Kingdom," while I haven't finished Breath of the Wild, haha.
Oooo definitely looking forward as you keep checking out the advance games (maybe even the off book Sonic Battle, though that one is for the story connection into Advance 3, might be a pain to complete Sonic Battle for all the Emerl stuff). My favorite I think is Sonic Advance 2, though Sonic Advance 3 follows pretty closely. And the music across the board is a bop (shout out to the twist to a classic theme in Sonic Advance 3)
This is one of the best GBA games I had growing up. I also got the 3rd game and that was fun with the tag team elements but it didn’t quite capture the excitement of the original.
The first sonic advance holds a place in my heart. When I got a gameboy advance one of the first games I can remember getting with it and putting hours in was the first advance game. I spent a lot of time in the farm but I had a great time playing the story too

I've completed all 3 Sonic Advances. Whew........collecting 7 Chaos Emeralds was a complete hell. But what matters to me are all three games made myself in younger age very happy. Then I listened to music cause it is very nostalgic. I'll never forget my rage after many deaths, many failed special stages, several hours of searching key/gold stars/Chao.
This is the only Sonic game I’ve played to this day, and I grew up on it. I never got all the Chaos Emeralds or got *too* too deep into the game, but I always had a good time with it! I always wanted to get Sonic Advance 2 because Cream was so adorable (and I believe that was actually her debut in the games), but I sadly never got around to getting it. I can’t believe after all this time we’ve still never gotten a Sonic Advance collection. I’d buy that in a heartbeat!
After growing up in the 90s on Sonic and desperately begging for a GameCube for the Adventure games, the Advance games ars where I really lost myself. So happy to see them being covered here! I *love* the Advance trilogy. Really hoping Nintendo will release them and Battle from the dungeon soon.
Mannnnn I miss Sonic Advance. I lent my copy to a girl in elementary school (in exchange for her Sonic Advance 2, which was way less cool) and then she moved away before we could trade back 😢

Only Sonic Advanced game I ever played was Sonic Advanced 3. I played it a lot when I was a kid and was really enjoyable. Easily the bjggest bite out of the Sonic franchise I had. Finding hidden chaos in each stage, and getting to have different pairings of the 5 characters of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and even Cream with each one added different mechanics. Definitely looking forward to seeing Jirard complete the other Advance games
I loved the sonic advance games when I was younger. I remember playing all of them so vividly and my brothers and I would take turns. My favorite was definitely Sonic Advance 3, I played that one more than the others. Over the years, I don’t know what happened to them, but most of my gameboy games got lost or maybe were given away/sold. I still have Sonic Advance 2 though.
A tip for totk if you do all the quests of Josh and robbie than he will return to his lab and then you can buy compendium photos from him. Hope this helps with completing the game
10:51 The Advance games (including Pocket Adventure and Rush) were all developed by DIMPS, who were ex-SNK, with Naka and the rest of Sonic Team merely supervising as Heroes was being worked on by the main team. 13:19 This is actually what the A button is for. Diving centers your character in the middle, so it’s easier to collect those rings laced between the bombs. It’s very trial-and-error at first thanks to depth perception. Initially, I also didn’t realize that you’re supposed to trick *after* you hit the boxes, and that collecting the Chao in the stages grant you extra lives. Fun fact! Sonic Advance holds the honor of being the first third-party game to make use of the GCN-GBA Link Cable, being a 2001 release. The very first game to support it is Animal Crossing’s GCN release, that same year.
Thank you for another great video about Sonic, I hope you consider doing Sonic Rivals 1&2 they are 2d platform games that were exclusive to the PSP and funny enough these 2 games were my first introduction to Sonic.
Sonic has always been a tug of war between Going Fast and Avoiding Obstacles. It's so interesting how each game tackles that war, some franchises seem to lament that there's a player at all. And religate "cool" actions to cutscenes or QTE.
The sonic advance games were fucking amazing I really hope we get a collection of them or they just add them to the gba app on the switch. These are still some of the best sonic games fr and sonic rush was always really fun I still have my copy of that though
So you decide to complete Sonic Advance one. I remember playing this game at a friends house. When it was new. Nowadays, I'm pretty sure I own this as a Virtual Console Wii U game.
Tip for those special stages - the spin move makes your hit box bigger abuse it for rings until you get better at controlling your character because depth perception is bad in those stages.
My favourite game on GBA. I loved the music in this game so much. This was a real reimagining of 2D Sonic games. So disappointing that they never re released these games or tried making new ones.
I remember I wasn't able to finish this game because there was a specific jump I couldn't make with Amy in a rocket ship level. Amy plays a lot different than the other characters, so as a kid couldn't figure out how to use that hammer high-jump move, which was needed to get past that part.
Big ups to Dimps who worked with Sonic Team on not just the Advance games, but also Sonic Rush and it's predecessors (yes, Sonic Colors 3DS and Sonic Generations 3DS are Rush games). Hopefully Jirard decides to follow through as the GBA and DS titles really don't get enough recognition amongst Sonic Fans.
This is the one game I got exposed to Sonic back when it released on the gba which I got on Christmas the same year. I was around 6 or 7 and the very special game I hold dear to me. Everything from gameplay, soundtrack, sprite work was and is still perfect.
10:54 Ok I did say this already in a longer comment but yes this is like Sonic 1, they were getting their footing. Partially cause new platform, but also... yeah it's not Sonic Team, it's Dimps, they made this trilogy (not sure about Battle which again you might need to play before 3), Rush games I'm pretty sure all 2d handheld Sonics going forward were handled all or mostly by them, even Colors 3ds was. Advance 2... smooth, and proves yeah Sonic does better with sequels like he did in Sonic 2 on the Genesis, again no spoilers but... I'm like 99% sure you will love it more... completionist criteria aside... it is a bit more grindy you will need all emeralds for all characters for some reason, but that's about the only flaw I can think of. Also the 1st appearance of Cream and a couple other characters without spoiling.
I'm pretty sure Sonic Advanced was my first Sonic game. But I remember Cream being a playable character, and she was super easy mode. She had Tail's flight power and could just have Cheese auto attack enemies on screen by pressing B button. Could be remembering a different Sonic game as it's been forever since I played it.
Just to point out some things in this video. The game does save after every act or at least every zone, so you don't have to do it in one sitting. The other thing to point out is that the Sonic Advance games aren't developed by Sonic Team, but by Dimps. Sonic Team were more of a supervisory role.
6:32... this will change and be a grind in Advance 2, not that it's really necessary outside of Sonic, as like this it unlocks a true final boss... but without spoiling Jirard... yes you will need them for all characters to be a true Advance 2 completionist. Hopefully no one else spoils it, it is a grind, it's kind of a lame completion bonus especially if you... not going to say more, anything I say could spoil stuff, NO ONE ELSE SPOIL IT FOR HIM, ADVANCE 2 IS AN AMAZING GAME, if you loved this Jirard you will love that, Sonic always does better with sequels. Advance 3 though you do not need to collect them all with every character... however I will also say Battle is semi important for Advance 3's plot, so maaaaybe you'll want to play Sonic Battle before then... which is a slog to complete I still haven't to this day. Advance 3 isn't as good as 2, but is still good in its' own right, and has MANY different ways to play, can't wait for you to umm... try all the combos is all I'll say, DANG IT'S SO HARD NOT TO SPOIL STUFF, I'm just so excited and surprised after all these years you know nothing of these games. 2 Doesn't suffer from an identity crisis, and this is why I said Sonic does better with sequels. They figured out what they wanted to do by 2, and it becomes a much better, and funner Sonic experience. 3 ehhh miiight, but still think it's a good game. I'd also see if you can check out the Flash version of Advance 2, not the complete game, but it had Shadow in it, don't think this is a spoiler as he isn't in the Advanced games outside of Battle, but if anyone wanted to, if it still exists, there it is, Ultimate Sonic Flash.
We desperately need a Sonic Advance Collection
Sega will find a way to butcher them

2:44 "The series started out as a 2D platformer **with an emphasis on speed and momentum**"
As Jirard shows off a freaking slow level.
So you decide to complete Sonic Advance one. I remember playing this game at a friends house. When it was new. Nowadays, I'm pretty sure I own this as a Virtual Console Wii U game.
Sonic advance 2 was my favorite 2d sonic growing up
Tip for those special stages - the spin move makes your hit box bigger abuse it for rings until you get better at controlling your character because depth perception is bad in those stages.
Stages 6 and 7 are PAIN
sonic advance music is so good. someone even went through and redid 1-3 and made em hq stereo etc
Hyped for this series, 3 is my favorite sonic game outright. Would love to see more GBA games, maybe the 3 Castlevainias?
Big ups to Dimps who worked with Sonic Team on not just the Advance games, but also Sonic Rush and it's predecessors (yes, Sonic Colors 3DS and Sonic Generations 3DS are Rush games). Hopefully Jirard decides to follow through as the GBA and DS titles really don't get enough recognition amongst Sonic Fans.
Colors DS And Generations: Blue Time aren't true Rush games. They lack the trick system and the emphasis on being stylish
@@LoliconSamalik Generations 3DS might not be part of the Rush series but I consider Colours DS as part of the Rush games.
Hard to believe I've been subbed since year 5, happy 10th anniversary.
Sonic Battle is an amazing GBA game, absolute nightmare to complete
Sonic Advance Collection with added perks. Let's go!
I love the Sonic Advance series. Please cover Sonic Advance 2 and 3!
I was just listen to the full OST today and then this video comes out.
sonic advance 2 is my favorite sonic game ever, the music is awesome and i find it on a flea market for cheap years ago
Jared has been a bit of a break lately, so I’ve been binging your content.
9:59 I see your mouse cursor!
This is the one game I got exposed to Sonic back when it released on the gba which I got on Christmas the same year. I was around 6 or 7 and the very special game I hold dear to me. Everything from gameplay, soundtrack, sprite work was and is still perfect.
Sonic Advance 2 is in my top 3 games, and my favorite 2D platforms of all time. What a fantastic trilogy this is
10:54 Ok I did say this already in a longer comment but yes this is like Sonic 1, they were getting their footing.
I have never played Sonic Advance and it looks like a great video game and I like your video Jirard
Cream was introduced in Sonic Advance 2
I never hear people talk about the portable sonic games, and I know they're not perfect, but I loved the Advance and Rush series.
"the pause button is just a pause button..... AND THE SNOZBERRIES TASTE LIKE SNOZBERRIES!"
Just to point out some things in this video. The game does save after every act or at least every zone, so you don't have to do it in one sitting. The other thing to point out is that the Sonic Advance games aren't developed by Sonic Team, but by Dimps. Sonic Team were more of a supervisory role.
The speed, art, and music in Sonic Advance 2 will blow you away.
6:32... this will change and be a grind in Advance 2, not that it's really necessary outside of Sonic, as like this it unlocks a true final boss... but without spoiling Jirard... yes you will need them for all characters to be a true Advance 2 completionist.
