I thought it felt a bit jarring at first, but I agree, it’s good fun for a second run or something. Really changes things up. In a way it reminded me of playing Maverick Hunter X as Cell instead of X.

Ice Mountain, Music Plant & Toy Kingdom would have been better. Different tropes instead of repeating a Beach level and a Night city level
Generations 3DS was such a wasted opportunity, not helped by the fact that it feels like such a massive downgrade from the console version.
The Music Plant and Toy Kingdom concepts are so rarely used within Sonic games...like at all. More weird level concepts would be good for Sonic.
Agreed, that levels should be awesome. Music Plant is one of my favorite Sonic levels.

One thing I love is that there's a bit of continuity between the first and second games, namely in Tails' Act 2 clear animations, where he pumps his fists in the air and then jumps and twirls around. In Advance 1, he loses his footing during the twirl, lands butt-first on the ground, and sits there rubbing his head in embarrassment. In the second game, he successfully completes the twirl by landing on his feet and, upon realizing this, jumps up and down excitedly. It's a cute little touch.
chimerschang I only know about that Sonic Advance 2 sprite with Tails because it's his taunt in Super Smash Flash 2. Still a nice touch though!

Notalgia bias on my part but I love Advance's OST and could probably name *any* track from any of the three games. My favorites from each game:
1: Egg Rocket
2: Ice Paradise
3: Cyber Track
Dafuq? Even as a kid I always thought Egg Rocket and Cosmic Angel were fucking easy. And it was my first game period. The boss was cheap as fuck if you weren't Tails or Knuckles though.
Lol. That's odd. I find it so freaking catchy. Act 1 in particular was very atmospheric and made me feel like I was trapped in a computer, though not the claustrophobic feeling I got with Techno Base in SAdv2.
Route 99 would be my close second for favorites in 3 though.

As a kid, I marvled at advance 3's presentation, but the team/hubworld system confused me, and I died constantly because of the level design.

I loved all the Advance games but I think I actually liked Sonic Advance 3 the most, which is funny because for whatever reason, I didn't expect much from that game and was very pleasantly surprised. The bosses were very creative and some of the music, specifically Ocean Base Zone was fantastic!

As someone who speedruns all three, advance 3 easily has the most complex and interesting level design that gives room for the crazy team mechanics that advance 1+2 and even the genesis games don't offer ( a speedrun uses ~15/20 teams, which shows how ridiculous the diversity is in both the teams and levels). That being said, the crushers and enemy placements are still pretty bullshit, though I would say advance 2 has way more level-design issues for the most part than advance 3 IMO.
I think a lot of the level design issues in advance 2+3 would've been more resolved if we had a bigger screen to see farther ahead, but on a GBA handheld that isn't really realistic so it's kind of an oversight. Ultimately they're all far from perfect games but I enjoyed all three a lot (especially 3), and they each offer something unique (and also have their own weaknesses), so everyone will have differing opinions on the entire trilogy

For me... Advance started out fine, was great in the middle, annoyed me near the end. Advance 2 is... boring, and the bosses are annoying. Didn't try Advance 3.
My favorite Sonic handheld game is actually Colours DS. I *_VASTLY_* prefer it over the others... and I think this is because of two things: a) Better level design, and b)... something you mentioned, that being the camera being further out - you can actually *_see_* more around Sonic.
These were easily the best Sonic games since the classics and the best ones since. Colors might take the title though, and Rush was pretty neat as well.
I love speed running Sonic Advance 3's levels as well.

Back then I missed out on the series... now I finished Advance, which starts out neat, is then great, and turns urgh towards the end... and today I tried playing Advance 2, and the game feels bland and the bosses annoy me to no end. I don't think I even want to finish it.
Dunno if I should even bother with Advance 3... so far, the Advance series left me rather disappointed.

Something subtle about Sonic Advance 3 I liked was that they reused some of the Emerl music from Sonic Battle for the final fight scene and good ending music.

You know when I got Advanced 3 as a kid (yea it was my first game) I always thought that image of the master emerald in the opening cutscene after Eggman presses the button was a gameboy advance. So basically these games are for the most part incredibly fun to play... so long as you're not worrying about getting emeralds and just focus on getting from one stage to the next and having fun. Too bad they never brought them to Wii U GBA VC. Maybe on Switch?

Wow, I think the "what you like most in Sonic games plays a big role in which Advance game is your favorite" theory of yours is really spot-on, at least for me. Advance 3 is my favorite, and sure enough the 3D games, especially Adventure and Adventure 2, are very close to my heart.

Xcalibur64 Some songs are kinda forgettable, yeah. But Secret Base, Ice Mountain, Egg Rocket, Cosmic Angel, those have to some of the best songs I've heard in any Sonic game.

I found 90% of the themes awesome.
But tbh the Advance Trilogy together has a fantastic overall soundtrack.
My favorite of the trilogy was Advance 1 by far. I wasn't a fan of all of the gimmicks 3 had, and 2 was very difficult to control, as it was mentioned in the video, as well as the side scrolling boss fights in every single level. Advance 1 was the most truthful to the Sonic formula and it pulled it off very well. I loved Advance 1 when I originally played years ago when it came out, and I still love it today.
Wow, seeing that Nintendo Power #154 cover takes me back. That was the first issue of Nintendo Power my mother bought for me when I was but a pre-teen, and soon after I was subscribed all the way until the magazine's discontinuation in 2012. I still remember how excited I was when Shantae's long-awaited return was announced in October 2009, seven years after the original was released...and nine years ago before now. MAN, does that make me feel old.
I'll admit, i started crying when i heard the Advance 3 credits theme after YEARS, i played the fuck out of advance 3, i didn't mind the level design, granted i was a kid but the team up feature kept me going, i had a blast with the game regardless, & can i also say the music is absolutely AMAZING for a GBA game? & again, funnily enough, Advance 3 was the first game to make me cry, after going through the hell of getting everything & hearing that credits theme? perfect ending to me, i didn't play Advance 1 or 2 but i don't care, 3 will always be my favorite handheld Sonic game, period.
Funny, because the same thing could be said for Advance 2 for me. I haven't played that game in years, but I will always recognize the music in the game.

@Ben Link: It's definitely not the Game Boy audio. It crackles at the "B", "S" and other popping sounds you can do with the mouth.
You guys really put a lot of work and effort into these games. As a Sonic fan from Day 1 almost 30 years ago (holy shit), I really appreciate that. I just got the trilogy for the first time this week, so I’m finally getting a chance to experience everything I missed. So far, it’s impossible for me to argue any points you make!

Let me tell y'all a story, back in the day when sonic advance was fairly new I was having a hell of a time trying to get all the chaos emeralds while I was playing it at the YMCA until one day on the way back to my moms car I accidentally dropped my game boy advance SP and when I went to pick it back up the final zone was unlocked. I don't how that happened but I took it
Sonic Advance 3 was one of, if not, my first ever video games that I played on a friend’s DS as a child and I fell in love with it instantly. God so much nostalgic memories with this one. I never played Advance 1 or 2, but I bet they were amazing too

The Sonic Advance games are great. Sonic Advance 1 was my first GBA game. I like Advance 1 and 3 the most.

I played it. That was one of the first DS titles I sold.
I really didn't like it, as it felt like either more of the same (which is obviously strange) or flat-out dull.
Ah, shame. Granted it's been years since I last played it but I had fun with it at the time.
The Satellite i loved colours it's my favourite rush game (haven't played adventure)

I never will understand the overwhelming dislike for sonic advance 3. Tbh the level design that people hate in SA3 also seems prominent in SA2 (well second half of SA2 anyway) and the special stage/chaos emeralds in SA2 I would say is 100 times worse than in SA3. Other than that I prefer the music in SA3 way more than SA2 and the gimmicks of the teamplay in SA3 isn't that bad. I feel it's overexaggerated alot simply because it doesn't feel normal. But the game gives you many choices. Want to play knuckles normally, chose knuckles and tails. Want to play as tails normally choose tails and sonic. But I digress, i'll never really understand the dislike for SA3 XD
