    One correction to the credits in today's video: while Jack Collins (our Script Supervisor) did make contributions along with Kyle, the bulk of the script was written by E.J. Daniels; the video description is correct. Everything else, so far as we're aware, should be "Perfecto!" :)

      a horribly fitting jacket. it is either huge around the waist or can't fit the arms inside it. i can't even out my arm in the XL jackets, but the XXL is like a tent around the waist. the leather and workmanship is great, i wanted them to fit so badly. the target audience seems to be guys with skinny arms and big bellies.

    I was about 17 years old when I was gifted a Schotts motorcycle jacket. It’s still a functioning riding jacket to this day. (Not for me because of jacket shrinkage or operator expansion). I’m 58 years old now. So yes, if the jacket is still being made with the same horse hide and technics it’s worth the investment. Not many things last decades of fun, abuse and debauchery.

      Schott has lost a bit in quality altough it’s still a great jacket and will last a lifetime for most people. However, for the price of a Schott horsehide you can get an Aero or a Simmons Bilt which are just on a whole different level than the modern Schott, both in construction and materials. I know many people prefer Aero, but Simmons Bilt takes the price for me because they have so much more interesting leathers. My SB jacket is my baby and will be passed down to my son a lifetime from today.

    I bought a leather jacket in the style of a classic perfecto for 110€ back in 2013. I've worn it very often and continue to do so. It still looks great and even comes with two interior pockets instead of just one. Buying a cheaper leather jacket is absolutely viable in my experience. Just make sure it's real leather.

    • @AndreMonz
      @AndreMonz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would say that this is the best option since it will not look as good when you are in your 40's , unlike when you are 25. 100-200€ doesn't buy the best quality leather jacket but it will be enough to cover 15-20 years of use.

    I ride motorcycles and put on quit a few miles a year. I bought a 118 10 years ago and it is one of the best riding investments I ever made. I wish I had waited and bought the horsehide version, but the 118 has done me well. Keep it oiled and polished and it has kept out wind and rain and has gone thousands of miles with me.
    Definatley a worthwhile purchase if you actually ride, and I would suggest going up a size for layering clothing under the jacket for cooler weather.

    I was just thinking the other day about how the Schott Perfecto would be great for a “Is It Worth It” video. Definitely a pricey item, but I agree it is worth it if you like the look. I would also like to see a video from you guys going over different leather jackets at different price points and see if there are any out there that are good without having to pay out so much money.

      I've never liked the look of these jackets. Although I openly admit that they are practical for motorcyclists in a number of ways, it is hard for a man to sale "the look". Like the black haired gentlemen in this video at around the 2:30 mark, the jacket looks like it is a size too small for him. He even tugs down on the jacket as if even he is unaware it is too short for his chest frame. And the multiple outside zipper pockets just take away from the look. I'm just one of those guys who prefers a cleaner less cluttered look in their leather jackets. The pockets I want in the inside and not out. The zipper not being in the center of the jacket, also gives it an odd look.

      I have a not Schott jacket with CE armor built in that looks like this one. I wouldn't ride just with any un-armored Schott or any jacket without armor for that matter. It looks just like a Schott, but it isn't. I spent a fraction of the price for a jacket that looks the same with more protection. This isn't the type of jacket to wear as a fashion garment anyhow. And if you did, you wouldn't need the price tag the Schott carries, unless money isn't a thing to you.
      I can see no advantage to the Schott over those that look similar for 10 times less money as far as looks go. Quality may be different, but is it 10 times different? I doubt it, but I've never seen a Schott jacket, so I could not make an informed decision. I give my jacket a 9/10. Even if I gave Schott 10/10, that would not justify the enormous $900 cost difference. @@GravesRWFiA

    Something about Raph wearing a Schott Perfecto and high waisted pleated trousers just isn't the play 😅
    As for your motorcycle gang, it would be called "the Sartorial Brotherhood" or just "the Gents."

    Kyle -> Ducati Scrambler Cafe Racer
    Chris -> Bimota Tesi 3D

      I really can't see Preston in a Goldwing, just too big and bulky, it wouldn't look good with his body type. But he would look really cool in a Bonneville, even more if it's a real vintage one.
      On the other hand, I could see Kyle in a Road King more than the Scrambler.
      And if they all show up together at the next DGR, they would absolutely steal the show 😎

    A quick statement as to the how and why’s motorcycle jackets were designed and how one is supposed to fit. As to fit I would return that jacket because it fit none of those who did wear it. Frist off let’s discuss the epaulettes, remember this jacket was purpose designed not as a fashion item but as a tool. Epaulettes are there to be used for the same purpose the military used them for. Some place to hold your gloves and the snap were to secure things hung over the shoulder. Sleeve length is supposed to be with your arms at rest at your side, cuff end should fall across the middle of the hand. This is how to properly judge jacket gussets should open when you point your arms straight out, there should be no pulling seen on them or the back of the jacket at all. Sleeves were designed to fit properly when your holding standard Indian or Harley buckhorn handlebars. That is why a properly fitted jacket when not riding looks like the sleeves are to long and the back looks to large, tool not fashion fit. So buy your coat considering the type of bars you plan on riding with. Remember this is not a fashion item it was designed as a tool. Leather or Horsehide was used for motorcycle jackets because it slides and doesn’t grab surfaces. That’s why racing riders wear leather suits which are made by Vanson the other high quality motorcycle leather company. Which in my humble opinion is the best American motorcycle leather company. The color black preferred by riders is supposedly due to it not showing road dirt ,oil, and it absorbs heat according to our folklore. As for that waist of the coat being tight, that’s not an issue it’s a design feature’s. Remember we live in a world of 55mph windchills, ever get a cold wind up the waist of your jacket at night. So if you haven’t realized that’s the purpose of zippered cuffs, wind control and cooling. Now if your considering one of these jackets consider this, road rash is unpleasant but scrubbing the blue stones out because you bought a fashion forward jacket instead of spending your money on real protection. Well either two things occur you will stop riding or you will never ride in shorts, sneakers, and a t-shirt and will buy a proper tool dressed accordingly. On the subject of t-shirts size your jacket for cold weather tolerance, if you can’t ride in a t-shirt in the fall but need thermals and a sweatshirt buy your coat with that on. Or do what those of us who prefer two wheels buy a Summer fitted jacket and a Winter fitted one. Yeah, it’s expensive but after fifty years of riding you sort of develop an expansive body and shrinking coats. Remember unfortunately the truth is if you ride long enough. There are two types of motorcycle riders those that have had an accident and those waiting to have an accident. Ride safe and for the sake of your hide wear something else’s hide over yours!

    Thanks for the history lesson. I’ve watched a ton of vids on motorcycle history, but I haven’t so much for gear history, so I actually learned somethin’ cool.
    That said, as a daily rider, style tends to go out the window unless it’s a perfect day. I wear a mesh coat in the summer and a heavy, textile coat in the winter (Merlin). Problem with leather is it generally doesn’t breathe very well and you wouldn’t think leather leaks, but.. yeah.
    I know guys who can destroy a leather coat in a couple of riding seasons (of what brand/quality, I couldn’t tell you). I usually replace my textile coat every five years. That said, I can’t claim style. I look like your dorky-looking, 40-something dad in the lame Aerostitch suit unless I planned to be somewhere nice (in which case style can overcome substance, but when it rains constantly and you’re on two wheels, you gotta just take the good with the bad.

    Perfecto is a really nice jacket. It's well crafted from high quality materials and will last a lifetime. That's said, I find it true of all Schott leather articles crafted here in the USA. I live in the north and have enjoyed the Casual Pebbled Weekend Jacket for nearly twenty years. It's generously cut for layering and has deep inner pockets for longer wallets, eyeglass carriers or CCW. I'm also very keen on the standard lapels as they tend to match more standard men's apparel.

    Excellent video. I like all the points you made. To me, Schott has been a useful "fashion" jacket, I personally own several of them. I must point out, the James Dean image in the video. He was wearing an LAPD cross zip horsehide jacket made by Cal. Leathers. Very different jackets from a quality point of view. In the same token, James Dean was photographed wearing a "Perfecto" label jacket type. However, some people believe it was made by an independent jacket maker for Indian motorcycles showroom retailers. Please keep on making your very informative videos. How about those CR jackets. There is a very nice history behind them as well!

    Really put mine through the wringer. Got the 118 as a teenager with my first salary. Didn’t even know about the history, but took a four-hour drive to a quality shop and the look and the quality just stood out, so I grabbed it. Wore it day and night for just about any activity you could think of and it still looks great today, albeit quite “vintage”. Had to take a pretty large one, because of my shoulders, which allowed me to “grow” into the jacket over the decades. Still fits like a glove. Owning the jacket taught me heaps about quality and ruggedness. Looks really great on Kyle 👌

    I have two Schott jackets, both made in USA. A distressed perfecto ( how incredible distressed from factory like a years o used one ) and a Cafe Racer. Both are the best jacket of my collection and if you look at 2000/3000/5000e italian or french designers leather jackets ( made in China ) all are poor jackets if you put a made in USA Schott besides them. Those Schott are the best leather jacket you can find and the price is cheaper if you know what you are buying.

    When they put some armor pockets in it, then it'll be "Perfecto". It looks good but I'm not paying $800 for something that offers me no protection on the ride.

    • @insertnamehere001
      @insertnamehere001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does protect you though, it literally originated for motorcyclists. This is what they wore before our modern, plastic armour. All you had was padding and tough leather.
      I understand though, you can get a Dainese or Alpinstars at that price, which comes with armour. I know because I have one.

    • @Topher7527
      @Topher7527 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@insertnamehere001 I'm aware of it's original purpose. But it only protects you from slides, not impacts. Most decent leather jackets can accomplish that. That's not good enough for me. This jacket won't do me any good when someone hits me from behind at a light because they weren't paying attention. This jacket was fine decades back when armor had yet to be fitted but I don't consider it to be acceptable protection today.

    • @Domitianvs
      @Domitianvs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Strong agree. This no longer fits the description of an actual motorcycle jacket. It was fine 50+ years ago, when most bikes would maybe do 60-70 mph downhill on a good day and had drum brakes. It is not fine today, when even a lot of standard middleweight bikes are pushing 100+ hp. And without reinforcements for the elbows and shoulders, it won't protect you very well in case of a moderate-to-high-speed slide either. It's just a fashion item now.
