I lucked out when I was new to riding. Went to a bike meet about an hour from home. They had a charity shop at the entrance, and one of the items was a used leather jacket. I tried it on, and it fit like it was made for me. It's heavy and thicker than you'd believe. I only paid $75 for it, and still wear it to this day, 15 years later.

I would also like to add: You want to see them actually list THE ARMOR as C.E. rated. Other wise they could be talking about anything from the pads to the dye. Last thing you want is to go down thinking you have C.E rated armor and it turns out it's just a foam insert.

When I was looking at my Scrambler Cafe Racer at the local Ducati dealership, they had a lone, couple year old leftover inventory black leather Ducati by Dainese jacket hanging on a rack, in a size too small for anyone else. I knew I wanted the Scrambler Cafe, and the jacket font matched the font on the bike so I took it down and tried it on and was a perfect fit. Talked the salesmen into throwing it in with the bike! Sure it didn't come with the pads the same way the jacket in the video doesn't but getting a $500 jacket for free makes up for it if I decided to get pads for it later.
I do have a pad filled, breathable mesh jacket as well that I wear during summer months.

When I first started riding I grabbed amazon jackets and pants... a full textile set... was like $100 for both peices. I expected it to be terrible but would let me get into riding on a budget in case I decided it wasn't for me. I liked them so much i ordered the mesh set as well. They have lasted fantastic, I still use the textile for riding all winter here in PA. I keep them for loaner gear and the mesh works great off road ADV riding as it is armored and flows crazy air. I've went down off road on my Super Ten without any issue but never tried them out on pavement. But over 2 years of constant use and no bad seams or wear at all. Took so long to replace them because they work so well. Just a thought for those on a smaller budget.

@@taliesinangling3564 like I said, I personally didn't volunteer to go for a slide on the street... however there are a good many anecdotal post of people posting online and TH-cam about their HWK brand gear holding up after a spill. All I can speak to is their durability after a couple years of basically daily use. No weak or popped seams, the included armor is CE rated with the correct moto numbers on it, even the zippers have been flawless. When I would handle and try on jackets at the local cyclegear, I couldn't see or feel drastic quality differences until I was into a $350-400+ price range. Is it as nice as my new Rev It summer jacket? No, but only marginally no. One main point of me posting this is, for $50 each for pants and jacket, there's no monetary excuse to not wear gear. Even/especially when just getting started.

I took a dive on my bike going down hill on a gravel road doing at least 35 - 40 mph. I was wearing leather chaps, leather jacket, helmet and steel toed boots (for work) as well as gloves. My helmet got ground down to the foam liner, my boots got ground down to the steel toes, my chaps had the snaps on the lower legs get ripped off, my jacket had the shoulder strap get ripped loose, and i had a "bursa bump" on my elbow. I was able to get back up and on the bike and ride home. The bike had superficial cosmetic damage. Thank God for proper PPE.

Bought the Icon Sanctuary hybrid leather/textile jacket when I started riding years ago. Still have it and it's been great, but it is very heavy and a bit chilly for colder temps (has vents that can't close and the removable inner thermal liner while nice, is a bit lacking). As such I've been looking for a more versatile and lighter jacket. I've settled on the Revit Sand 4. A nice ADV/touring jacket with plenty of protection, features, and vents to still keep cool in the summer but more importantly can close them when the temperatures start to drop to help keep warm. It's also a good bit lighter than my old Icon jacket, which I'll still keep around, as well as has a better thermal liner for keeping warm when needed.
The only negative is that it's not a cheap jacket, but with some shopping around was able to get a fair deal on it.

I find it interesting that practically all the Harley jackets now come with pockets for all the armor. They however only sell the armor separately. My first armored jacket was a leather First Gear jacket, that I bought at the time not the armor, but it was an actual women's fit and it fit perfect! I fell in love with the armor. Somewhere 20 years ago I went all textile, pants and jacket and I love my armored gear by AGV.

Whelp, I bought the Harley jacket. Yeah, had to sell one of my children to pay for it. It does come with all the pockets, beltloops and such and the fit for riding is perfect. Heavy as sin so the armour pads I added are a bonus. It bounces thrown gravel no problem. Wouldn't change it for textile. Mind you, where I ride we get warm to hot days in the 'summer' but for the most part the weather always has an edge. Winter - nah, park it or drown. I'm headed south to California this spring so I might get to see how it works in places where it really does get hot. Overall, great info and yet one more good, informative content video. I have two jackets.
The first is a Tourmaster 3. It's a great jacket for all seasons. The base part is Kevlar lined with pads and mesh for lots of airflow on hot days. However it also has a rainproof shell that zips to it and an inner liner for warmth. It's the one I usually take motocamping because it's so versatile.
The second is a leather motorcycle jacket. It has pockets for a back pad and elbow pads (which I still need to get though I could take them from my first jacket). This is kind of my everyday commuter jacket. Great in spring and fall. Okay in cold. Decent rain protection for commuting. Not so great when it's hot. Looks stylish.

I do wear "fashion leather" when I am on motorcycle and weather is cool but it is always on top of modern textile, aramid lined and D3O armored Richa hoodie/shirt which I wear ALWAYS when riding. But even the leather jacket is good, it is an oldschool "Marlon Brando" 1950s style motorcycle jacket made from very thick and heavy leather. While it is not armored itself but combined with the armored and aramid lined shirt I do feel very safe wearing it. Thick leather is still thick leather and provides good abrasion resistance but if it fails there is still the textile, aramid lining and D3O armor layers before my skin. Layered armor. 👍

I actually wear a CE Level 2 hoodie under my 'normal' leather jacket sometimes - especially when riding into town.
I also wear biker jeans , as well Level 2 - the great thing is, people don't even notice you are wearing biker gear.
I was wearing that stuff at work not just once and one of my colleagues did say to me that I'm brave riding without gear - then I showed him that it has actually protection.
I like a causal look but don't want to give up protection.
Also, I am not a hardcore, going fast rider, yes I have a early 2000 1-litre naked bike what snaps the speedo in just after 3 sec, but it the same with wearing a 500m water resistant watch - I will never dive 500m but I don't panic if it falls into the sink.

I went from shorts and t-shirt to full one-piece race suit always on. If you get one of the high end ones, it's amazing. Using stuff like Dainese undersuit D-Core tech, I'm 100% comfortable in both heat and cold (sometimes the same day - from the desert-like beach areas to the top of a mountain). Going to a restaurant and walking around for a while is not an issue. PERFECT. You can be safe and comfortable these days. But remember! Most damage/injuries are hip/legs injuries (including deep internal bleeds). Your jacket is just that, a jacket.

Go to your local Cycle Gear and try on a bunch of jackets and narrow down your fit preference. Personally I like my jackets on the snug side so the shoulder and elbow armor doesn't move around. try on different jackets and stick your arms out to mimic your riding position. You don't want the jacket to restrict any movement while you're riding. I recommend mesh for summer and leather for winter. You can wear leather in the summer, just make sure you find one that has vents to flow air because it will get HOT. A lot of jackets come with shoulder and elbow pads but not all will come with a C.E. rated back protector (it's usually a foam pad to mimic the feel of a back protector) so make sure you upgrade that

So I decided do a shot every time Spite says "fashion leather" in this video. LOL But this is actually one of my pet peeves, when you see a rider in some vinyl "motorcycle styled" jacket from TJ Maxx, that is clearly not designed to be worn while riding an actual motorcycle. The giveaways are always the sleeves riding up and the back of the jacket up around their shoulders flapping in the wind!
Not to hate on the women riders, but it's usually them rocking this fail, because they simply don't make a lot of cool moto gear for women. It seems to mostly just be retooled men's stuff - in HOT PINK. Who wants to wear that? Now there's a niche for somebody out there! Make cool looking, stylish, but safe and practical moto gear for women - with real women's bodies! Because I know women want to be safe and look bad-a$$ when they ride too?

I used to work for BMW UK in the warehouse, every year they would sell off ex display jackets and trousers returned by dealers when they re-stocked. I got Savanna 2 jacket for £40 a Tourance leather jacket for £50 and a nappa leather jacket for £30 because the removeable collar and some pulled stitches I also got a Full Gore Tex winter jacket and two summer textile jackets so the lot for just over £200, that was over 15 years ago and I still wear them apart from the textile summer jacket which no longer fitted. They stopped doing the staff sales a couple of years later and allowed the dealers to sell them off discounted but not at the prices I paid. I did check the new prices of some of them and basically I paid less than 10% of the retail price and the £30 jacket cost over £700 at the time.

When I was riding, in the 60s, my street wear was the same as my riding wear, usually jeans and T-shirt. Helmets were not yet required, and I seldom wore one. I had a motorcycle for transportation NOT for racing. I spun out once in the rain and ground the pocket of my left rump. I also got some brush burns on my hands. In seven years on my bike, that was my only accident, not counting off-road spills while fooling around. My experience has taught me that the most effective protection you have, lies between your ears.
I'm moving to Tucson this summer and, after 50 years, thinking of getting a bike again. I'm not crazy about leather and do not plan to do any touring. Your textile suggestions seem to be both prudent and reasonable. I'll give them consideration.

Living in SoCal, it's hot alot so eventually had to get a jacket with single purpose just so the armor wouldn't move.
