The Ultimate Schott Perfecto Guide

  • Few things are as iconic as the Schott Perfecto. You can see it from a mile away and its one of the few garments that instantly transforms someone when they wear it. Since the history of the Schott Perfecto, or more specifically the 618, 613 (One Star), and 113, reaches back into the early 1900s it can be confusing to find information.
The asymmetrical zip model began as an aviation jacket, and early versions begin to resemble the current evolution of the 618/613/118 models. This jacket was extremely useful and soon found a new home in the world of motorcycling. In these early days the "Perfecto" sub-label of Schott was extensive, including wool jackets, country-style jackets, and many others. It wasn't until later that Schott reserved the Perfecto label for their motorcycle jackets only.
With some models being discontinued and reintroduced like the 613 One Star, and others changing their fit and dimensions like the 118, finding a Perfecto to suit your needs can be difficult. Below is a quick reference guide for your use:
-118: More generous fit, 1" longer hem, Schott logo on snaps, snap for belt buckle, softer leather made of "naked" cowhide.
-618: Slimmer fit, 1" shorter than the 118, Schott logo on snaps, no snap for belt buckle, made of steerhide or horsehide which are both stiffer than the 118 leather.
-618: same as 618 but with starts on epaulets, no logos on snaps, made in either steerhide or horsehide.

Nothing beats a Schott Perfecto. Got my first Perfecto after working the Summer of '82. With that came a new pair of Levi's and West German made Adidas sneakers. Going back to school that year never felt better. We had style.

It fits really nice ( I went with the website's suggested size), hopefully I don't outgrow it too soon, especially after dropping a grand for it. I was looking at the schott website to find specific care products for veg leather, they're not specified. Everything about it is really well made, no fraying or lose ends. What are some storage suggestion? Would it be best to store on a hanger with a cover, place on a microfiber bag to keep dust out, or something else. I bought a Perfecto few years ago, it's a 618 size 40 and honestly, compared to my biker's jacket, (Ixon Vortex with shoulder pads and aero bubble and dorsal protection, forearms shells, etc) it's the same weight! The leather is super heavy and high quality, the zippers, virtually unbreakable and as long as the leather is taken care of, it stays like brand new for years. paid 600€ for it, but I don't regret my choice! Long Live Perfecto!

Luckily I live in the NYC area. Schott holds annual factory sale in NJ. The sale consists of everything new at a discount but the real discounts are the extra overhead they cannot get rid of, one off prototypes, & some slight cosmetic issues. I bought my classic black 141 & an antique brown 585. My sister hit paydirt with an aviator Top Gun style leather jacket for her son my nephew. It was an old jacket that never sold. Apparently there was a nick on the front (jacket is distressed so I couldn’t find the nick for the life of me). Anyway a typical Schott runs around $600-$700. My sis paid $80!!!! It’s an amazing jacket. It’s the same leather as my 585 which is distressed. This was aviator style as opposed to my 585 which is classic moto meets army style. It’s a cash only final sale event every first Saturday in December. It’s always my highlight around Christmas time. There is also a $50 & under room. Picked up some awesome peacoats & vests too. No I do not work for Schott I just love their merchandise.
