As others have mentioned: 1965. Live performance. No autotune, no sophisticated audio filters, no retakes or dubbing. Just pure, raw, disciplined talent. I wish we had music and singers like this today.

No one has sung this great ballad composed by Alex North and lyricist Hy Zaret's "Unchained Melody" (1955). Then the late great Counter Tenor Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. On this night back in (1965) 58 years ago on the NBC Andy Williams Show. Bobby Hatfield gave an Epic performance many have called the greatest (Live) television performance ever! Brilliant!
Great reaction to one of Rock & Rolls greatest Counter Tenors Bobby Hatfield.

The duo called the Righteous Brothers comprised of Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. This was performed live in 1965 on the Andy Williams Show. Nobody to date has ever managed to match Bobby Hatfield's level of singing.

3:05 "The other brother, is he just kinda chilling?". The "joke" Andy Williams was telling before the solo performance. He asked Bill Medley why he wasn't singing on this track, and he said he didn't think it would be a hit. Andy asks him what he does during Bobby's solo, Bill replies "Find a little corner and kick myself a lot". Andy replies "C'mon, I'll show you the corner I sit in when I hear Tony Bennet sing "San Francisco".

A honied voice, warm and flowing gently, smoothly, effortlessly. Written in 1955 for a prison movie, titled "Unchained." This performance was a live television show; it has never been equaled despite the hundreds of times the melody has been covered.

This song was written for a movie that came out in the 1950s--about a man getting out of prison and hoping the girl he loves is still waiting for him. It's my song for my husband who was a soldier and we were parted 8 months while he was overseas in Germany. I lost him in 2020 and I cry every time I hear this song.

This song was done live on a 1965 tv show. The vocal was live, the band was live. Bobby was simply very capable of delivering a perfect vocal. This was a solo song for him, Bill Medley (the other Righteous Brother) is not on it.
Another excellent Righteous Brothers song to react to is “Just Once In My Life”, a massive hit in 1965.

Agree. Also later with the Blossoms singing background, Bill Medley solos on the Playboy After Dark TV show doing his song "Brown Eyed Woman". Lots of Shindig TV show b/w videos of the Righteous Brothers since they were regulars on that show from 1964-1966. That's where Bobby does his "Summertime" solo and both brothers sing "Little Latin Lupe Lu", "Your Are My Sunshine", "Bring It On Home To Me", etc..

Bobby nailed this song! His studio recorded version is different. But here he is live on national tv on one of the biggest, most watched shows of the time. He wanted to show is complete vocal range. No falsetto, he had a 5 octave range, and there was no auto tune back then. This is pure talent. You had to be able to sing!
The recorded version of this song was used in the 1990's movie "Ghost" which gave the song a new audience and a second time on the Billboard charts. It is the most covered song ever with over 670 covers. The song originally came from a 1955 little known prison movie called "Unchained". There were 2 other recordings of this song before Bobby covered it and made it his own and a giant success.

Each of them always had solos on their albums, because their voices were so different. This one just turned into a hit, kind of accidentally. Absolutely live vocal, and the music was live as well. The studio version was used in Ghost 25 years later, and it charted all over again. In their live shows they would trade off solos in between their duo stuff.

The musical arrangements on this song by the NBC studio orchestra of the Andy Williams Show (1965). Was off the charts magnificent. The Strings and Horn sections were so well in tune with the great Counter Tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. This rendition of the Alex North & Hy Zaret's (1955) collaboration of their song "Unchained Melody." Has gone down as the greatest (Live) television performance of all time.
