Remember, this was 1965. No auto tunes. Live performance. This song was written in 1955 for a movie "Unchained". It has been recorded by hundreds of artists but NOBODY could sing it like Bobby Hatfield. It will always and forever be his song. Bobby passed away in 2003. Just weeks after The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. RIP Bobby.

Hundreds of singers have done this song but none better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version used in the film 'Ghost' was great but this live version was stupendous. No auto tune or gimmicks just pure talent. He had a cold, his mother was in the audience watching him sing professionally for the first time and he suffered with stage fright.

This song was written in 1955 for the prison movie 'Unchained' it's been covered hundreds of times by hundreds of different artists but this one by Bobby Hatfield is considered the best. Bobby had a remarkable three and a half octave range (B2 to Eb6). His ability to sing that high without using falsetto means he was a counter tenor ...a very rare type of singer. His partner Bill Medley is a bass baritone, just as rare but at the opposite end of the scale - they both did outstanding solos but could combine their voices with amazing harmony.

Best version hands down of this classic song. Absolutely loved the Righteous Brothers. Sadly we lost Bobby Hatfield about 20 years ago. He had a beautiful one of a kind voice. Home Free recently did a great version of this song. And Austin Brown also did a very beautiful tribute of this song about a couple of years ago.

Bobby had a head cold and still nailed it. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages. Bobby by far the best version in my opinion.

Is it just me or is his sound very low?
Bobby Hatfield had one of the rarest voice ranges in music. He was a countertenor which means he could sing notes that usually only a female soprano could sing and he did it easily.

Nice that you had the longer clip of the show. Apologies if someone else had said this: The song was from a 1955 movie called "Chained" about a chain gang prison. It was sung by a black opera singer named Todd Duncan (one of the prisoners) - it's on TH-cam. The song won an Academy Award in 1955. For the 1955 versions, check out Roy Hamilton and Sam Cooke (on TH-cam). But this version was the one that really took off. Bobby was the one that started singing "I need your love" up an octave.

Home Free did a beautiful cover of this song based on the original version, not necessarily this rendition. The original was from like 1955. It was written as a soundtrack for a movie called "Unchained" about a prisoner trying to figure out whether to attempt escaping prison or doing his time to go home to his family.

Bobby Hatfield had a very rare voice called a counter tenor. Most men who had his voice throughout history were Italian opera singers centuries ago called castrati, meaning they had been castrated to preserve the voice. He had a 4 and a half to 5 octave vocal range and extremely good control, producing notes and changing between them as usually only classically trained opera singers can. He had no formal training. On top of everything else, he had a head cold that night of this live performance.

If you want to hear them both, try "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling." Ranked by BMI as radio's most requested and played song of the 20th century. There are 2 versions of "Lovin Feeling" on You Tube. The one that starts out blacked out, then a single spotlight is better. Bobby's version of "Unchained melody" was used as the background music for a love scene in the 1990 movie "Ghost." The public reaction was so great that the album was rereleased. It sold over a million copies in many different COUNTRIES. It was a hit in the'60s and again in the '90s. You might also try Bobby's solo of "Summertime." He really shows off his range in that one.

Hard to believe that you never heard of these guys before. You're pretty young. But these guys were at the top of the charts in the 60's. Unchained Melody is Bobby Hatfield doing the solo. Bill Medley also would do solo's like "Old Man River" and together they would do You've Lost that Loving Feeling. Maybe you've heard that before.
