He was a counter tenor, one of the rarest singing voices. Remember, this was live, no auto tune, no second takes, just talent. He even had a cold that night!
Bobby was the real deal. He was unique, with a voice straight from heaven and a personality that made you just want to stop whatever you were doing and watch and listen. He was hypnotic, mesmerizing, and addictive and the best performer I have ever watched and listened to. Just a bit of side information, he could have been a pro baseball player, he was being scouted, but chose his music instead. I'm glad he did or we would not have had this one of a kind, heaven sent voice to listen to!
One of the greatest live performances everr. Broadcast live to millions on the Andy Williams Show. No edits; no autotune; no sampling; no filters; just pure unadulterated talent.
This is one of the best live performances there has ever been. Been a singer and into all my life, I am 66, and I have never found a better one. And that is true voice on the highs, not a falsetto.
I shall never ever forget Bobby Hatfield singing this sensational song, infront of the audience. He was most certainly so talented, what more can I say? 💝

That's our Bobby. Absolutely incredible. No one ever came close to his amazing talent. Bobby sang all his songs with feeling, passion from the depths of his soul. Women wanted him and men wanted to be him.
Right. I feel for anybody that attempts to do this song. They'll always be compared to Bobby and come out on the short end. It's like Ray Charles version of "America". How can anybody even think of singing that and know that they'll be compared unfavorably to Ray Charles?

I received a newfound appreciation for this crowned jewel of a song.... seeing this live performance. Bobby Hatfield’s vocal range was stellar ! The passion, poetic, fire, love personified! ⭐️🔥💛
The reason this live version is so much better was because when he started to rehearse with the orchestra he realized how great the accoustics were in that studio. He told them he wanted to make some changes. You heard the differences for yourself. I think that lip bite and smile at the end was because he was right. It turned out exactly the way he wanted it to sound. Plus his mom was there to watch him do a live performance for the first time.
Knowing his vocal range and breath control he wanted to take full advantage of the acoustics and he nailed it. This is considered one of the very best live recordings of all time.
@@jessepischke7094 It IS the very best because Bobby was the best of the best! We miss your glorious voice, and your unequaled personality. You owned any stage you stepped on. And that one and only "Bobby Smile!"

I’m not really disputing your story, but if he did suggest making some changes, it was probably because he knew the hall already and knew what would work. He certainly sang the hell out of it. This is one of those moments that will live on in memoriam. This epic live performance of composer's Alex Norths [1955] 'Unchained Melody' done back in (1965) on the 'Andy Williams Show.' Provides us with how great the 'Andy Williams Orchestra' was. The arrangement of having the strings (violins and Cellos) section prominent in this version gave for what I consider the greatest rendition of this beautiful ballad I have ever heard. The violins were kicking it in this version...And then you add one of the greatest tenors in rock and roll history in 'Bobby Hatfield.' And together they have created one of the greatest live performances in television history. This performance alone cemented Bobby Hatfield's legacy as one of the greatest tenors in music history. What you just witness was greatness! May he rest in peace.
There will never be another Bobby. It wasn't only his amazing voice, but also the feeling, emotion, and soul that Bobby put into every song. And his face was SO expressive. And his eyes, so kind, and that smile, which I call the "Bobby Smile." No, there will never be another Bobby.

Both of them would do a solo on their albums. Bill's version of "Old Man River" is priceless. It's his baritone that digs deep and then rises into the upper range of the baritone pitch and delivers soul from his gut that gives the growl he's known for.
This has been covered hundreds of times by various artists and in my opinion they have all been found wanting. This song belongs to Bobby Hatfield RIP Bobby
Yep, Chad! thank you -- the amazing Bobby Hatfield -- he actually was nervous to sing this b/c his MOM was in the audience (also, I read that at some times he suffered from "stage fright" - though you wouldn't know it here_) ... lol -- I'm sure Mom was proud -- what I love about his singing is that he is virtually effortless -- he doesn't strain or scream -- he just hits those notes as if it's nothing...
I can see your appreciation for this great artist--this is a classic that many generations have loved, and ladies will swoon as Bobby Hatfield performs this beautiful love song. This is what I see as perfection and there is no one who can match his unique style, so filled with heart and emotion. He has many more solos I believe you will enjoy--all on You Tube--All his songs show a different side to this one of a kind talent. Hope to see your reactions to some of these. Thanks, Cathy
I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the war for the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Dress Uniform, and having my comrades forming the sword tunnel helped. I must have done something write because we're still together and she still puts up with my singing. With 4 children and 7 grandchildren, we got busy on 3 of our baby's when I was home, we adopted the young afghan woman and her 2 daughters at the end of 2015 after they saved my life in Afghanistan (a story for another time), and we are so much better for having them, we love all our family and that is our strength. I served my Queen and Country for 34 years in the Royal Marine Commandos and later in the British Special Forces, and then 2 years in hospital, and she stuck by me even though I'm mainly wheelchair bound now. We do actually have a song by Queen called "Your Me Best Friend", a very apt song as she has been my best friend since we were both 15.
I was 15 when I watched this live on the Andy Williams Show with my parents. I started collecting their vinyls in 1965 and started listening to them in 1962.
Elvis sang a cover of this and is fabulous, but Bobby owns it! Keep reacting to more of the Righteous Bros. songs! You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling is awesome!
The quintessential love song and it LIVE. No one can sing it like Bobby Hatfield. Many have tried. This was actually written in I think 1955 for a Prison movie. You put him and Bill Medley together and you have the greatest duo of all time. I remember when this actually came out . I was 15 at the time. You want more? Listen to them do Soul and Inspiration, You’ve lost that Loving Feeling which was the most listened to song of the 20th Century. Also Rock And Roll Heaven, Ebb Tide. Thanks for playing that timeless classic
In 1965 I was just nine years old. When I heard this song I became aware of a whole other dimension of love. I remember thinking "maybe some day there would be a boy who could love me like that!!!! "Got goosebumps then and every time I've heard that song since then.
The song was written for a 1955 movie titled "Unchained". It's about a prisoner hoping his love was waiting for him. Bobby Hatfield had serious stage nervousness especially that night since his parents were in the audience. The little lip bite and grin at the end was him knowing he nailed it. When the song is played in movies, (Ghost and Top Gun both, I believe), were from the studio recorded version. This live performance was one of the few times any live performance has so completely surpassed the taped rendition.
I grew up in that era and remembering the young ladies saying his voice was like VELVET,BUTTERY SMOOTH his sang with all his HEART AND SOUL THAT IT WOULD PULL YOUI IN!
"Angelic" might be the most common word to describe Bobby's voice in these reaction videos. He could sing anything--in addition to the other suggestions here, you'll enjoy listening to him sing "Something's Got a Hold on Me" (wailing blues), both Bobby & Bill belting out soulfully: "Try To Find Another Man" (original), "Turn on Your Love Light," "Island in the Sun," "Harlem Shuffle," more blues duets like "Crying Blues" and "The Blues" (originals) and other Bobby solos that improve on the original versions: Great Pretender, Only You, Ebb Tide, Come Rain Or Come Shine, etc., etc., etc.
I describe his voice as "honied." Dripping with sweetness. And the suit is "Ivy League." Bobby wears it very well. You may have heard this song on the radio, in the movie "Ghost," but this live television performance is on another level altogether -- heavenly.
You're not going to offend anyone by saying he does or doesn't sound like Elvis. He's not meant to sound like Elvis, he's meant to sound like Bobby Hatfield.
Bobby Hatfield did this song solo. NO one will ever do this song like him. ARTISTS before him and after him have done this song but no one will ever do this song like Bobby. This performance was live sheer perfection. Many fell in love to this and with him.Bobby and Bill did solos in their careers. Each had their style Bobby was tenor and Bill was the baritone voice they shouldn't have blended together but they did and it was pure magic. Same for their solos. They were inducted into the ROCK and ROLL HALL OF FAME in 2003 unfortunately Bobby passed away a few months after. Bill Melody still sings and performs today.
Right. It's slightly different than the original recording, but so much better. Bobby simply pulls out all the stops and delivers one for the ages. His name is forever linked to Unchained Melody. It's his. Full stop. The greatest version ever. He defined it, pure and simple.
No me canso de escuchar esta cancion y su explicacion es excelente ciertamente ya no hay esta clase de musica cuanto añoro esa epoca saludos desde Guayaquil Ecuador
I love how people always stop in the beginning, saying how great it is, before he has even started to really use his voice. And you can't stop thinking: "Just wait for it, this NOTHING compared to what's about to come "
This is known as stand and deliver. And, he did. Love your reactions. Spot on. Jonny was fabulous. I am 80 years old and still get a thrill from his live performance. Thank you.
The caliber of talent back then was phenomenal. The love and respect for the music was on a different level. Now a days it's just write the song and get it out to make money.
That's exactly what I thought "is that even possible". Voice of an angel. Could be the best live performance ever by a solo male vocalist, the purity of his voice and he was in total control all the way through. Puts a lot of today's music to shame ... so much of today's music sounds manufactured whereas this was completely genuine, straight form the heart.
It can't be brought back. Because there are no artists with the unique talents of Bobby and Bill, Elvis, the Everly's, Platters, etc. Or the dedication to the art. It's too easy to rely on auto tune and other techniques to enhance their mediocre voices. I know there is a lot of great singers, they need to be played more on radio and TV.
Grew up with the Righteous Brothers in the early 60s. Use to see then all the time growing up in Pomona Ca when they were first starting out. Two songs that where big for them in the early days that nobody talks about were "My Babe" & "Little Latin Lupe Lu"
Bobby Hatfield was a 4-octave tenor. Lovely voice. He's 25 yrs old here. He made this song a hit a second time when he sang it years later in the movie "Ghost " First artist to ever do this.
On live TV in front of a TV studio audience (including his mother, apparently). One man, One mike, No studio, One take, BAM! Beautiful. Surely close to perfect.
Hi there Chad L. Summers. I hope this finds you Well and reasonably Happy. That being said... Isn't this just Amazing?! Somehow the Angels and Dreams got together, all at once & at the same time for this performance to unfold. Thank God that we had the technology available, at that time, to record this in such a way that we are able to enjoy it and be a part of it today! I recently read that this song, "Unchained Melody." has been covered by more than 607 different artists throughout the years and while that is pretty amazing by itself, what surpasses that is the fact that the only version that anyone ever hears, is this one! This Song and Bobby Hatfield were made for eachother. I still get emotional, every time i see and/or hear this. I, of course, have to stuff those emotions down, so it can't be seen, but it's not always easy. Thank you for sharing this with the reast of us. Don't ever doubt if you are appreciated, because you certainly are. Take care and... Keep Smiling... Cheers...
Great reaction to one of my favorite songs ever. Besides those already mentioned, I suggest the Righteous Brothers "I Just Wanna Make Love to You," "Just Once in My Life," and the live performances of "Summertime" (another Bobby solo) and "Bring It on Home to Me."
You are right about the music being filled with feeling and they really put there hearts into the songs. You don't see it that much today unless it country music and that just isn't the same anymore either. Bobby Hatfield had a world of talent. His voice was so pure and effortless that it just flowed out and there was no strain to sing and hold the notes. They sang from the heart and you could tell that. Bill Medley was the same. They were an amazing duo and there will never be another like them. There version of Unchained Melody will never be done better.
How much devotion and effort went into making your video so wonderful and beautiful, it moved me like this. Even if many years pass and everything changes without a trace, I hope that your wonderful and wonderful video will never be forgotten. Thank you to the universe-like algorithm that made it possible to watch a good video at this time. The autumn wind blows softly and a blue landscape is seen by the window today, giving a heart-fluttering feeling. I comfortably watched your videos on my small phone while holding a guitar in my arms and drinking a hot Americano while looking out the window. The scent of your video still lingers in the early morning cafe window while I am watching your video, so I play the guitar and play the harmonica. I would like to say to you that it is a very strangely attractive quality where you can clearly feel the colors of your video. Thank you for making it such a happy time. From the time when you accidentally led me into the video you made on the night when the morning mist was blue... Your video gave me only one great happiness. Your video stories on my phone right now are so dreamy and give me great joy. I am amazed at the excellence of your skills and thank you for taking the time to warm my heart and make me feel comfortable with your sincerity and hard work in watching the video.
Bobby performed this on the Andy Williams TV Show. It was Valentine's day, hence the pink suit. His mom was watching him perform live for the first time so he was nervous. He ended up giving the greatest live performance ever. I bet he didn't have a clue how much an impact it would make.

That note at the end is a low-high C6 octave note. You're right, very few people can reach that range.
@@mayloo2137 according to the guy on Pegasus that does reactions it was a G7 or sharp of a G7
Appreciate your reaction. That you understand how great Bobby's performance was in this clip.
This has been covered hundreds of times by various artists and in my opinion
they have all been found wanting. This song belongs to Bobby Hatfield
RIP Bobby
Yep, Chad! thank you -- the amazing Bobby Hatfield -- he actually was nervous to sing this b/c his MOM was in the audience (also, I read that at some times he suffered from "stage fright" - though you wouldn't know it here_) ... lol -- I'm sure Mom was proud -- what I love about his singing is that he is virtually effortless -- he doesn't strain or scream -- he just hits those notes as if it's nothing...
One of the MOST BEAUTIFUL VOICES ever. Beautiful song.... beautiful man. Gorgeous
Performed lived on The Andy Williams Show. Pure talent, nothing more. Back in the day when you either had it or you did not. And he def had it.
Try some of their songs that both sang. His partner has a deep voice. Harmony was so good.
_👍That's quite the story. Thanks for sharing and trust you and yours are doing well during these uncertain times._
Elvis wished he could sing like Bobby Hatfield...
Sin palabras,es realmente increíble la tremenda voz , talento puro , realmente una obra de arte, maravilloso!!!
I was 15 when I watched this live on the Andy Williams Show with my parents. I started collecting their vinyls in 1965 and started listening to them in 1962.
Sie haben .....das... live gesehen???
Wahnsinn...😮j
This song basically died with Bobby!😢
@@proverbs35-67 Amen to that brother.
@@proverbs35-67 This what I call
"Bobby's Song," Because he made it all his own.
In 1965 I was just nine years old. When I heard this song I became aware of a whole other dimension of love. I remember thinking "maybe some day there would be a boy who could love me like that!!!! "Got goosebumps then and every time I've heard that song since then.
Chad do somewhere please.
Live performance hearing Bobby Hatfield's incredible voice and talent!
Love your reactions so natural this is an amazing song and never ever get talent like that today x
You've Lost That Lovin'
Feeling" was in Top Gun.
Tout est dit.... C est un joyaux,......Bobby, a jamais, au paradis.... 🙏
Wail?? Just watch him sing "Summertime." It's a video from a show called "Something Special."
The greatest performance of all time. Totally effortless!
You need to do YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE.! One of the best Duets ever!❤
EXCELLENT REACTION & WISE COMMENTS!!!)))))))))))))))))))))
You're not going to offend anyone by saying he does or doesn't sound like Elvis. He's not meant to sound like Elvis, he's meant to sound like Bobby Hatfield.
Agreed!
Better than Elvis!
Absolutely nancy no one could either then or in this era. Bobby was a very blessed person with such a voice, and range.
Yes, it is possible! With Bobby Hatfield it is! What a voice he had! Really miss it!
THAT PERFORMANCE BY BOBBY HATFIELD IS WHAT WE NOW CALL "X-FACTOR PLUS". SUCH VOCAL CONTROL AND MUSICAL GREATNESS. SO AMAZING AND SO BEAUTIFUL
You've heard the song, but what you hear in this video isn't the same version. To me, it's even more brilliant.
Right. It's slightly different than the original recording, but so much better. Bobby simply pulls out all the stops and delivers one for the ages. His name is forever linked to Unchained Melody. It's his. Full stop. The greatest version ever. He defined it, pure and simple.
Thank you for going back then....I grew up to this kind of music...brings back memories
Thank you.
Pure talent!! This is Bobby’s song. Bill sang the title song Time Of My Life in the movie Dirty Dancing
The caliber of talent back then was phenomenal. The love and respect for the music was on a different level. Now a days it's just write the song and get it out to make money.
What a beautiful song. Wow. A classic!
This song was a hit twice in1965 and 1990. They were the greatest duo , no one else was ever as good, or ever will be.
If you could read my mind.the song 🎵 Gord light foot.it is a masterpiece.Vonnie.❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Bobby killed this live performance.
2 full octaves in this song and effortlessly. And no autotune ;-)
3 octaves, 20 notes.
@@dawnaberry8452 - last time I checked, 20 notes is less than 3 octaves.
I like your reaction at the end there - "was that even possible? What did I just witness?" Love it!
I agree with you! Bring it back!
Amd on that note "Bring Back That Loving Feeling" is another wonderful Righteous Brothers son!
Angels are real!!
Oh Bobby ❤️❤️❤️
Grew up with the Righteous Brothers in the early 60s. Use to see then all the time growing up in Pomona Ca when they were first starting out. Two songs that where big for them in the early days that nobody talks about were "My Babe" & "Little Latin Lupe Lu"
The best love song of the history. Bobby the best.....
They were not afraid to sing with and show emotion back them. Thankyou I never tire of this era in music.
Cheers...
Soul and Inspiration. See both brothers. Awesome!!
Love that song😊
Listen to these guys singing Go ahead and cry,it’s live and a great song!
One of my favorites ❤️
All pure talent...
Great reaction to one of my favorite songs ever. Besides those already mentioned, I suggest the Righteous Brothers "I Just Wanna Make Love to You," "Just Once in My Life," and the live performances of "Summertime" (another Bobby solo) and "Bring It on Home to Me."
Yep! And don’t forget the extremely passionate but still tasteful “Ebb Tide!”
Just witness? You just witnessed one of the most amazing live performances (unenhanced) ever made. He was astonishing, amazingly talented.
Bobby performed this live. No autotune
Yes, this song featured in “Ghost”, and another Righteous Brothers song, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”, was featured in Top Gun.
"Is that even possible? Wow" Great question...and exclamation! Can you believe how lucky we are that this was captured!!!!!!
Great reaction Chad. I haven't seen a better reaction than yours. You said it all.
Bobby performed this on the Andy Williams TV Show. It was Valentine's day, hence the pink suit. His mom was watching him perform live for the first time so he was nervous. He ended up giving the greatest live performance ever. I bet he didn't have a clue how much an impact it would make.
October 25, so not Valentine's day.
I’m 73 and grew up with the best music ever in my opinion. Bobby Hatfield and Bill medley were exceptional. Another Fav of mine was Jay Black, check out Cara Mia, along with some of his other songs. He was know as “The Voice.” I think you’d love him.
Jay and the Americans. I remember them.
Absolutely loved your reaction and comments to Unchained Melody!
