  • We were lucky enough to get this bike early... then the weather cleared, enough snow melted so I could escape for a weeks worth of smashing on this bike.
    The New Marin Alpine Trail Carbon 2 is a great All-mountain/Enduro full suspension mountain bike with 150mm rear suspension and 160mm travel fork.
    I ride the bike, talk about fit, geometry, componentry, suspension performance and even talk about a couple technical glitches I had.
    This $5499 bike is phenomenal value!
    Bike Bros. is a Canadian Bike Shop selling Marin, Giant, Rocky Mountain and Pivot.

      Hi. I'm 6'1" with pretty long legs and I see that you are riding the size L which is what I'm thinking of buying too. The seat tube is short at 42.5 and I have the Bike Yoke 160mm dropper. Do you think it will fit this bike? What I worry is that if I set the dropper too far out I might no java enough minimum insertion length below.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop

      @@kevinlei1969 I think you will fit the bike but like me, you might be pushing the limits of a 150/160mm dropper. My plan is to install a 210mm dropper, both because there is easily the room for it and to get more post insertion.

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop

      I think it would work. The suspension kinetics are the same on alloy and carbon and they obviously designed around coil or air compatibility. I know the Marin product manager did a lot of testing on the coil version so they definitely designed around that.

    Good day Bike Bros, Mark here from Saskatoon,SK been watching your videos on Marin bikes since I’m getting one through my local shop. Ill be getting a rift zone 2, could have gotten the 3 but didn’t like the non Shimano hubs and out of budget too. Question though, would you upgrade the stock rims to we are one carbon and keep the Shimano HB400 series hubs? Im on the budget so would that make sense? Or just save for the whole wheelset since carbon rim plus sapim? Spokes will cost something too?

    Its a very interesting bike for Marin. Nice job on the drop on prospector mid way through, I've never figured that one out, I"ve seen guys come off nose heavy and bottom out, rear heavy and squirrly, you went right in like a boss! I'm in the middle of trying to figure out what to replace my 2019 Slash with, this bike in the XR guise is up there! Marin rims seem like a concern, with a double down casing and high psi you still dented it, interesting!

      Thanks. Me and another shop guy were the first 2 guys to hit that drop - Blue was leading us through the trail when it was still a bit of a secret and he hadn't done it yet.. so had many years to figure it out. On the wheels, I think I must have hit something really weird. They aren't great but we've seen a number of people on those wheels without incident. I personally like where they put the money into the bike, leaving me able to put truly high end wheels on and still spend less than bikes with similar spec and only mid-range wheels.

Prospector is one of my favorite trails as well, some nice upgrades this year, I enjoy that 2 little drops on the climb midway up now, fun stuff!! I'll have to figure that drop out someday, having a long\slack bike with a big fork sure won't hurt it! I hear you on the wheels, it can just be total chance to get a ding in it like that, I put a stick through the top and side of my tire on Cox this year, the big bikes do encourage you to charge extra hard and take lines you would not normally! Lifetime warranty weareone wheels are hard to beat! Really good spec on the Marin bikes, its nice they took some chances on a really aggresive geo bike at a great price point to get some brand excitement!

For the history books: first drop (Michael who used to work at the shop) did it on a prototype Marin XC race bike (that never made it past prototype stages) on a night ride with Blue I think the day after Blue first showed us the trail. then it snowed and Blue filmed me hitting it the next day with a couple inches of snow on the ground. Hi, i am in te market for stable enduro bike for chunky, techy terrain. Mainly intrested in bike around 160/170mm. But this bike drawn my attention due to value of the build. Do you have any chance comparing it to trek slash or something similar? And also as you were riding did the bike feel balanced? It has quite short chainstay how did it affect riding? Thanks in advice

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have any experience on a Trek. Other long travel bikes I've ridden are Giant Reign 29, Pivot Firebird 29, Rocky Mountain Slayer 29. Of those, its geometry felt closest to the Reign but for ride feel it reminded me more of the Slayer (which is a huge compliment). With lighter wheels and tires I think the bike could feel more like a Reign but I think the double down tires, overall weight is what reminded me of the Slayer. It is a case of the bike being a bit heavier with thicker tires actually being a good thing to calm the bike down when hitting rocky/rooty sections at speed. It pedals quite efficiently and has an incredible geometry.

    • @loiczeq5551
      @loiczeq5551 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really appreciate your help. There is one more question on my mind. Did you feel like the rear wheel was not as stable and could more easily get knocked around because of shorter chainstays? Have you noticed any negative aspects of that geometry number?

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@loiczeq5551 I didn't feel any negative from the short rear end. I am a fan of short rear ends which means I always choose bikes with them so my opinion is biased because I haven't ridden any new bikes (like Specialized Enduro) with long rear end. I think there's obviously pluses and minuses either way.

      I haven't ridden the new Altitude yet though one of the mechanics at the shop has. We compared feedback and it seems like there's a lot of cross-over. Altitude offers so much ability to fine tune performance with adjustable chainstay and geo ( which is awesome) combined with being the lighter bike. I really struggle to compare these two bikes... in spite of being 10mm different in travel numbers, they have geometries that make them behave differently so no true advantage. Huge adjustability vs simple and stretching the budget.

    What is "bio-pacing"?

    • @BikeBrosBikeShop
      @BikeBrosBikeShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if this is a common term, but it is a sensation you feel if you have too much antisquat in the suspension which causes a strange sensation that you feel when you're pedalling. The term comes from the feeling you got in the late '80s/early '90s when the first generation of oval chainrings came out. Some had very extreme oval shapes and felt strange to pedal - Shimano's version of the oval chainrings was called Biopace. It is less common on current suspension designs but it goes hand-in-hand with pedal-jack which means if you pedal really hard it actually jacks up your suspension to ride higher than the sag point in your rear shock.

      I’d visit bike bros shop and measure you up, my local bike shop fitted me and compared my old bike to the new Marin reach numbers and gave ma a good tip on which size to choose.

      I would think you're an XL. Trying the bike would be helpful but these days with bikes being so scarce that may be difficult. I'm 6'1 and went large but that is (counterintuitively) because I have long legs. If I had short legs or more even proportions an XL may have been more appropriate (horizontal reach is primary concern)

      @@BikeBrosBikeShopGreat in-depth review! I am 6 feet 2.5 inches, with a 6 foot reach and 3 foot inseam. What size would you suggest for me please? I am based in Australia, our retailer is online only. If I purchase I can send the bike back for a full refund if I am unhappy with the size, however of course I would prefer to get the size correct first up. Particularly with Covid stock levels, it may add a few additional months wait time to get a bike if I get the size incorrect first up! Thanks very much for your help.

      @BikeBrosBikeShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rides great ;) Better on the ups than expected for a bike with 63.5 degree head angle (due to the 78 degree seat angle). On the downs it is planted, and balances playfulness with stability well. The frame and fork are both very stiff which combined with the thick tire casing and grippy compound makes the bike somehow feel like you're going slower than you actually are.

      @@BikeBrosBikeShop When you say it climbs better than expected - do you mean easy transport stretches back to the top for enduro downhills, or does it manage technical climbs well too? How does it climb rooty, punchy, rocky stuff? :)
