I was singing along when two spandex big hair cuties noticed and thought I must be a huge fan to know all the words to a song, that wasn't even out yet!! Neil finally said, "I'm challenging the person throwing those bottles to a Dance-Off!" Everybody started laughing and it stopped. You need to take it all with stride! Walking off the stage you gave the bottle thrower exactly what they wanted.
You never take bottles being thrown at you "in stride." Anyone who throws shit at a band deserves to be beat down by the crowd around them. If the crowd doesn't step up and take care of it for you though, then the best way to handle it is to stop, make sure the jerk gets thrown out, and then continue playing for the people who are all now on your side.

In a room of a thousand people you are always going to have that handful of dumbasses that are intent on ruining the show for everyone. They are surmount to hecklers at comedy shows who try to one up a comedian or are attention seekers. The latter is usually true. A musical performance is no different. There are always unseen variables that take place that should be factored in. Bottles, people running on stage, technical difficulties while these suck a performer has to learn to adapt when these things happen. But more importantly they need to learn how to turn situations around. Never march off the stage like a diva unless you're J-Lo. When you do that the heckler, the person engaging in that tomfoolery wins. You give them what they wanted.

"we were having so much fun" so they're going to do the encore they never do. All it took was a bottle of water to hit the stage 3 feet from his feet and he's done. This is one of the softest moments I've seen from a band.

I've read a story about how Exodus was playing a show shortly after Zetro took over for Paul Baloff; and someone in the crowd tossed a full beer can at Zetro. Without missing a beat he caught it and kept on with the show.
Was at the California World Music Festival back in something like 77 I think and the opening act was a band called The Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof the guy behind the Africa Aid concerts was the singer. Those dudes got bottled off stage and I mean whiskey bottles no chicken shit plastic water bottles and they took it and played on for a little bit anyway, no Prima Donna stuff. Then again they were Irish so it was probably pretty tame to them.
I once witnessed Dee Cernile from Sven Gali , engage in a full knock down bar brawl that involved at least 10 people while he had his guitar strapped on his back with the wireless still screetching through the p.a. He hopped back onstage wiped the blood of his lip and continued to put on the best rock show I've ever seen. This however was not that.

Someone threw a keg cup full of beer at Steve Tyler in the early 80's. Tyler told the crowd to point out the loser, don't hurt him, just send him up here on stage. Forced and pushed by the audience to go on stage Tyler asks the guy "you think this is easy?'". Hands him the mic and says " ok then - go ahead - you sing". 15 or 20 sec of silence and the guy turns purple/red and all the guy says is "yo", everyone laughs. Tyler rips the mic out of the guys hand , tells him to get off stage if he won't sing and asks "anybody else want to throw anything?" Then, the show went on.......

Ed had every right to fire him. But no matter, how does a guy go from “we’re having so much fun” to “we’re done” just because one assailed threw a plastic water bottle? Just seems really soft to me.

I’ve played, promoted, produced and generally worked shows in light rain and yes even shows where some a-hole threw a drink. The chances of a few ounces of water creating a problem is not likely. I just personally feel his response was very soft. Your opinion is different and that’s ok.

I've read a story about how Exodus was playing a show shortly after Zetro took over for Paul Baloff; and someone in the crowd tossed a full beer can at Zetro. Without missing a beat he caught it and kept on with the show.

Was at the California World Music Festival back in something like 77 I think and the opening act was a band called The Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof the guy behind the Africa Aid concerts was the singer. Those dudes got bottled off stage and I mean whiskey bottles no chicken shit plastic water bottles and they took it and played on for a little bit anyway, no Prima Donna stuff. Then again they were Irish so it was probably pretty tame to them.
Rory Gallagher played Belfast during one of the heights of bombing and gun battles in that city. Now that’s showmanship 👍
I once witnessed Dee Cernile from Sven Gali , engage in a full knock down bar brawl that involved at least 10 people while he had his guitar strapped on his back with the wireless still screetching through the p.a. He hopped back onstage wiped the blood of his lip and continued to put on the best rock show I've ever seen.
This however was not that.
Throwing water bottles or anything else at the band is a douche move. But do you want to know an even bigger douche move? Punishing a crowd full of your own fans over a water bottle that bounced past your feet.

Tyler told the crowd to point out the loser, don't hurt him, just send him up here on stage. Forced and pushed by the audience to go on stage Tyler asks the guy "you think this is easy?'".
Hands him the mic and says " ok then - go ahead - you sing".
15 or 20 sec of silence and the guy turns purple/red and all the guy says is "yo", everyone laughs.
Tyler rips the mic out of the guys hand , tells him to get off stage if he won't sing and asks "anybody else want to throw anything?"
Then, the show went on.......

Collective Soul are the nicest guys on the planet. They respect people when people respect them. When you go to watch a band play, give the band respect. If you're going to be a shithead, don't go to the concert & fuck it up for everyone else. They are incredible down to earth guys & I would have freaked out too if I was in Ed's position. Also, to the people in the comments acting like they aren't relevant, maybe you should go to their recent shows. They are still constantly selling out venues.

The band wouldn’t even exist without him - he chose every single member & invited them in to work with him from the very beginning. Even his own brother Dean was invited by Ed to join. Collective Soul is Ed’s baby, hands down. Joel tried to take over creative control & Ed (& the rest of the guys as well, if I’m being honest here) didn’t like that he was trying to do that. Ed had every right to fire him. Also, bands give false statements about why band members leave all the time - stop acting like it’s just them that have lied about the reasons why a certain band member had to go.

If what you say is true, then thank you for providing more than the band ever did regarding Joel‘s departure. It’s not cool for a band to lie to their fans, and I was there for 17 years. But I’m not buying your story. As I said before, I was a big fan. I watched any interviews I could find with the band. Ed is an extrovert, and he enjoys hogging the microphone. I’ve seen Ed yank the microphone away from Joel. Joel is more of an introvert, and I don’t see him trying to take over the direction of the band. When Joel vaguely told his side of the story, I was able to believe it because I had seen over the years that Ed could be an egomaniac.
But if you have proof to back up what you’re saying, I would be more than interested in hearing what the real story was.

He’s changed over the years and not for the better. He used to be so mild mannered and polite. Hes not awful now, but not as laid back as he used to be. He even said in a recent interview over the last few years people have told him he was acting like a dick. I think that’s why there was a six year gap between albums. I think he was pissing the other guys off.
Never defend anyone who throws something on a stage. If you were walking past a painter who was painting on canvas in a park and someone threw a water bottle at him/her, would that be ok?
