    My father was at this concert, and he had no idea why Ed lost his shit and got so enraged. After reading comments, he found out that Ed's wife left him for another band member, Ross. Is it possible that the guy Ed screamed at didn't know? I mean, it's not like the breakup was a huge news story. My dad is a big fan of CS, and he did not know anything about Ross & Ed's wife until now. Maybe the guy was a big fan of Ross and just didn't know the past history. Hope Ed finds some peace with it eventually.

      Ponette hard to say because we don’t hear what the fan was saying that made Ed so mad in the first place. We do hear Ed say the fan didn’t know what he was talking about, so maybe the fan said something like “Ross should still be in the band” or “you guys never should have fired him.” Then again, Ed called the guy the most disrespectful person on the planet, so maybe he did know and brought up Ed’s wife or something.
      I don’t know, I’m just glad I wasn’t there for this.

    • @ja8ames
      @ja8ames 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, that's a good point. It's not something that was ever explicitly said by anyone 'official,' nor really surface-level common knowledge. A fan could easily not realize what a loaded proposition it is to bring up Ross.
      At the same time, from the standpoint of the new guitarist being right there on stage, I wonder what that guy in the audience said...

    • @Criminal.Lawyer
      @Criminal.Lawyer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ed has been giving to the fans for a quarter century and if you've followed the band you know he cares a lot about his band. Jesse was relatively new and by far the youngin in the band. It's no wonder he found it disrespectful that the person said "bring back Ross"; he was sticking up for Jesse. Ultimately, someone who comes to a collective soul show and refers to Ross is a fan who goes way back. It may be appreciation for Ross, but it's kinda disrespectful to the current lead guitarist. All this is before you even add in consideration for the backstory. Ed was kinda right to lose his shit.

      I love collective soul music too, but the Ross era stuff. I did not know until tonight about him leaving the band or why. I saw some of the videos of 99 woodstock and thought.... hmmmm there is something missing and has been since that classic sound they had there... why...? So I searched around and found out Ross left. Then searched some more and found out he was kicked. Searched some more and read lots of rumors why. Then I searched some more and I find this video. Very surprised. I am not a music trivia or drama person, so I didnt know any of this.

    This is really sad to see; I hadn't been aware of this concert moment before now, and really this is the first time that I've seen/heard/read anything emotional from the band, not just hearsay or secondhand things or sanitized statements. That's a lot of raw emotion, understandable but eye-opening just the same.
    First of all, Ed has plenty of reason to be upset and I don't begrudge him that at all. At the same time, we fans are always talking about Ross because the music that the band made with him was magic, beautiful and meaningful to a of our lives.
    It's just deeply sad that it all fell apart in such a divisive, ugly way. I don't know the people involved personally. We're all human and we all make mistakes. Sometimes, the details are such that people go their separate ways and things stay sour. I have to admit that this is disheartening, because while I wouldn't dream of dismissing the hurt that's in the past here, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't dreamed of Ed and Ross musically reuniting someday. Apparently that's not ever going to happen, which isn't surprising, but I didn't realize just how raw that nerve still was.

Yeah, he was a great guitar player and his stuff with the band was just killer but still. I think we'll just have to accept that he'll never play with the band again. Sometimes things happen that are so bad they cause a massive rift that can never be repaired.

      Ross had an affair with ed's wife according to Pierre Robert from Philly rock station. Hard to get over and forgive a guy that breaks up your marriage. Ed is still awesome and married a nice faithful wife. He has every right to kick out morons from his concert and his band. 19 number one hits and he made his own record label. All the artists complain about the business side of things but Ed is the man as he cut the business leeches off of him with his own record label. Pearl Jam tried to fight concertmaster leeches but Ed actually beat these leeches and still makes the best music.

    My two cents for what its worth. I have followed CS since I was 9 years old when i remember my sister bought their self titled album. Since then I have become a huge fan. Part of the problem is in 2001 when the band went through changes with Ross and Shane, the band communicating nothing that had happened. While you can argue its not really our business, if people don't know then it forms nothing but hearsay and gossip. I feel like enough time has passed that Ed or someone in the band should tell the story. Shane we know left for drugs because there is his testimonial on youtube, but nothing between Ross and the band. Many speculated years ago from an article written in guitarist magazine that the reason Ross was let go was because he wanted to be a bigger presence in the band, but Ed and his brother had some legal contract that said they were like 60% shareholders in the band after they left Atlantic Records, producing 7th year itch which was Ross's last album. This meant Ed and Dean could direct everything from concerts, to travel, to song writing, to media appearances. This is the first video that I have seen that pretty much admits the affair even happened.

    • @langdonalger9219
      @langdonalger9219 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      kreamowheat you know what's weird to me? Ed and Stephanie (his ex wife) are friends on Facebook. She has pictures up with their son which Ed has liked. It's so weird to me that would happen since she cheated on him/left him for Ross. Wouldn't he hate her as much as Ross? I get they have a kid together, but would you be Facebook friends with your ex if she did that to you and like pics she posted?
      I have a theory, which is my own. Stephanie and Ed's marriage was in trouble and when it ended, she ended up with Ross. Meaning Ross never broke up the family because the marriage was already over. Having an affair is much different than getting together with a friends wife after the marriage was over. Btw, Ross and Stephanie are no longer together. She's with some other musician guy now. She must really love musicians!

    • @ja8ames
      @ja8ames 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, as you say, it's been tricky for fans because no one in the band has ever--that I'm aware anyway--spoken about it in any direct detail or with any emotion before. It's understandable that they wouldn't want to speak about that stuff publicly, but from a fan perspective, beloved musicians go their separate ways and there's very little communication about why, thus very little closure, thus you keep hoping that someday it might all come back around.
      If one has kept up on 'the story' by googling periodically over the years, then one likely knows that it was an affair between Ross and Ed's wife that caused the schism. But that's sort of a trail-of-rumors thing and maybe not everyone knows.
      Anyway, it's too bad. I've never stopped wishing in my heart-of-hearts that Ross might play with them again, because they made musical magic together. Ah, well....

    Okay, so perspective here. It's clear most of you have never been cheated on, or if you have, it wasn't with a friend. My first wife slept around on me for the last couple years of our marriage, and when I found about it I was pretty angry, but angrier still when during a period of trial separation I learned that one of the men she cheated on me with was someone I considered a friend. I later remarried, and so did she, but not to any of the men she was fucking when we were married. By the time she remarried I had let go of most of the anger toward her, primarily because of the fact that we had children together. After ten years married to the true love of my life, I can safely say I hold absolutely no enmity toward my ex-wife. My former friend she fucked? Well, I've forgiven him too, but that's not the same as being ready to be all buddy-buddy with him again. There's something about knowing that when you were in a really bad place, a guy who's supposed to have your back was instead taking advantage of it.

    I can definitely see Ed being more edgy than Will. Let’s be honest Ed’s written all the songs and has done all the heavy lifting throughout.
    I liked Shane’s style better but Jesse has done well. Shane had a heavier style but he’d be the first person to tell you that Johnny is a better drummer.
    Like all things that age, time changes things. I preferred the more raw side of the band when they were younger, but almost all the great rock bands were better when they were younger - the first 3 Aerosmith albums or the first 2 Cars’ albums are good examples.

But it is sad that the world is a little worse without the original lineup creating music; that's not on Ed alone to fix though and he shouldn't feel guilty continuing to put out the best music he can. If there were a magic want to heal all the wounds and rifts that would be wonderful, but it's not the way life works.
    I AM quite happy that Jesse seems to fit a bit better than Joel and the sound is a little closer to classic again though. That's not to hate on Joel at all, he's a plenty capable guitarist who I'm sure I would enjoy immensely in another band; he just didn't quite 'Gel' with CS.

      Simple Chronology the reason he's flipping out is cuz Ross the original lead guitarists had an affair with his ex wife Stephanie. Her and Todd married 3 years after her and ed divorced, they I believe had one child, her and ed had one son Lindsey, and ed has since remarried to michaline, I can never spell her name right, and they have an almost 9 year old son named Lennon he's 8 will be 9. But ed needs to get over the affair that happened 17 years ago his ex Stephanie and Ross divorced about 3 years ago. So ed the wise thing to do would not act like a sissy onstage, I get your still pissed after all these years but now that your ex wife is no longer married to Ross bring him back will, and Shane still talk to him. If you can't bring Ross back at least bring Shane back.

+Krystal Marra I'm not glad....My god, the guitar playing they could have had on their new stuff would have been amazing with Ross..... It's just sad that he had to screw around with Ed's wife, who was NO angel herself, and then get kicked out of the band..... It's just too bad Ed can't get over it and make a great business decision to bring Ross back.... But, like I have always said, that's never going to happen.... so Jesse it is. I'm just glad Joel is no longer their guitar player, his leads didn't do it for me

      He got really angry and defended his current band member (who didn't deserve to be harassed for something he couldn't control), and then he swallowed his pride and apologized in front of (and to) the entire audience - all in the span of two minutes. I know people who wouldn't apologize for something they did in a week, a year, or ever. So, I thought that part was pretty professional. He didn't have to apologize, but he did. He was right to defend his band member and his frustration is certainly understandable. Some of his language may have been a bit strong, but I think that's what the apology to the crowd was about.

      @@nerdbot37 Ed Roland sure as hell did. He says it all of the time, as a matter of fact, when he refers to the song "Shine". Don't try to give me that indie music snobbery here either, because I am a huge fan of indie music and full well understand that bands don't necessarily need to be top 40 to be loved by many, but in the case of Ed Roland and Collective Soul, this mindset totally does not apply.

    • @nerdbot37
      @nerdbot37 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samuelbasye3508 I'm not saying all popular music is crap. No indie snobbery from me. There are many factors, many aspects of music that make it either quality, or enjoyable, or - ideally - both. Interesting song structures, unusual phrasing, intelligent lyrics, a great voice or engaging personality fronting it all, etc. Collective Soul have none of those things (to my ears; clearly your mileage varies; taste is subjective). They were, and seemingly remain, 90's re-hashed butt rock. Grunge-lite. Utterly useless and boring to me.

    Vá com calma Ed, você está muito nervoso, isso pode lhe dar um ataque cardíaco. Não é assim que as coisas são resolvidas. É uma pena que isso tenha acontecido entre você e Ross Childress, mas você tem que entender que isso foi para o seu bem e não pena do seu mal. Deus faz as coisas perfeitamente. Parece que você não manteve os ensinamentos do seu velho pai, o reverendo Roland. Se algo muito chato aconteceu foi porque alguém não merecia sua confiança e certamente não era culpa total de Ross Childress. Você deve entender que algumas situações ruins levam as pessoas mais amigáveis a cometer erros contra nós, como álcool, drogas, etc ... Não que os membros do CS usassem essas coisas. Outra coisa: o perdão sempre se encaixará nas situações mais extremas. Não odeie Ross Childress, Ed, isso só perturba a carreira de sua banda. Não ofenda Ross Childress porque ele nem estava no seu programa para se defender. Você deve usar o silêncio em resposta ao fã exaltado e não ofender o seu ex-amigo da banda. Ross Childress é um cara legal, e ele sempre foi um excelente guitarrista, o mesmo guitarrista que ajudou você a aumentar o nome de sua banda nos 5 primeiros álbuns do coletivo Soul. Não se esqueça de Ed nunca. Nós, fãs brasileiros de CS, amamos a música de sua banda e amamos o trabalho que Ross Childress também fez com você. Não importa para nós o que aconteceu nos bastidores da vida, o que realmente importa para nós é o trabalho da Alma Coletiva, bem como o trabalho de Ross Childress, Joel Kosher e outros ex-membros do CS. Nós amamos você Ed, nós amamos Ross Childress também. Espere pelo perdão de Ross e perdoe-o quando seu orgulho ferido se curar. Entenda que o que Ross fez de errado com você foi um favor para você. Hoje você tem uma linda e adorável esposa e ela parece ser compreensiva e terna para você. Ela te ama e merece seu respeito também Ed. Tenho certeza que você a ama também na mesma medida. Entenda que você não perdeu, você ganhou e Ross também do outro lado da história. Deus não constrói histórias de perdedores, apenas para os vencedores. Perdoe Ross Childress, seja dentro do seu coração e não através da sua própria boca, ou cale-se com Ross. Não guarde rancor no seu coração, não denegrir o seu ex-amigo. Aprenda a transformar seu outro rosto em seu inimigo, mas não se esqueça de que Ross nunca foi seu inimigo também. Não traga os mortos à luz porque você não é Deus. Não traga problemas antigos já enterrados meu filho! Em vez de fugir com Ross Childress por causa de um terceiro, ore por ele Ed. Ore pelo seu ex-amigo, ore por quem se atreveu a trair você ou o que aconteceu. Vá em frente com sua banda e com seu talento porque eles foram dados a você por Deus. Pare com isso, Ed Roland, você é maior do que qualquer briga estúpida com uma mulher ou mesmo por causa de dinheiro, brigas e bobagens que separa amigos e pessoas que você amou. Reconheça que Ross Childress é de fato um excelente guitarrista de rock, um excelente músico, assim como você é. Atire a primeira pedra àquele que não tem pecado, meu amado! Fique em paz Ed, fique em paz Ross, não briguem pela febre dos fãs fãs do Coletivo Soul. Isso pode ser algum conselho que seu velho pai lhe daria para Ed. Entenda isso como uma mensagem espiritual dele para você, meu amigo. do fã brasileiro de sua banda: "Não atire no Ross, ele é apenas o guitarrista da sua banda" lol! (Não atire em mim, sou apenas pianista) Wilson Alexandre - Fundador e Dj do Fofinho Rock Club, desde 1971 do Brasil.
