I own 2022 Avalon and I agree the Crown seems to be a step down interior wise but it’s increased ride height is something I’d trade my Avalon for. If you have back injury or just grow old, you will greatly appreciate getting in and out of the car easier. Also, AWD in states with snowy months is a great bonus. Nice to see every Crown is AWD. I’m not in love with SUVs so this is the car for me. Curious on pricing. It should be priced below Avalon since interior quality went down but I suspect it’ll be even more expensive. Great vid!

My mother is currently driving an '08 Ford Taurus AWD which has a fairly tall seating position (for a sedan) and I've been looking for something similar for her. True, a change I hadn’t noticed since I drive a “normal height” sedan for 15 years until I got a 2022 Avalon. Sure the Avalon is nice but after driving it for a few months I realize it’s too low to the ground for me. However, as you said, all newer sedans are low to the ground now so I got decided to pull the trigger on my 2022 Avalon. I wish I could have held out for the Crown. All it takes is one back injury or growing older and you will look at low (now normal) height sedans differently.

@11:06 Living in Colorado not having a rear viper is not a good thing. 21in wheels also not going to help in CO potholes. Hope high trims offer smaller wheel option for functionality and let non car people buy 21s for the looks..😁 Same story for 2 tone color scheme with a black roof. I prefer not to have a black roof on hot days. That steering wheel and door panels does not seem it belongs to the "Crown" name. Pretty much that interior looks like its in the same Corolla / Camry class. That odd placement of volume button is pretty bad design imo. May be all that cheapness to keep the price around $30K-35K? Toyota Hybrid “B” mode on the gear selector is NOT “Re-gen”. It is engine braking.
It does not increase, it REDUCES the amount of electricity generated.
It sets the CVT transmission into a ratio similar to a low gear on a standard gearbox, slowing the car down by making more parts spin harder.
The re-gen brakes are attached near the wheel, and take some of the effort off the standard brakes, which are reduced in size.
The disadvantage to this is when the battery becomes completely full, there is nowhere to send the extra energy, putting stress on the standard battery and brakes.
“B” mode is only for going down massive mountain passes or long steep roads once the hybrid battery is close to full. In these rare circumstances, using it will extend the life of your brakes.
It should not be used for everyday driving because it will only make the engine work harder, use more gas, and regen less

Many people buy SUVs and vehicles with a bigger ride height for visibility except everyone is doing the same thing for the same reason so it makes their reasoning negligible, hence more pickups on the road and lifted pickups, meanwhile drivers like me that don't like SUVs, drives my sedan to work or for short trips and only uses his pickup for utilitarian purposes. Get stuck behind these towering vehicles with people behind the wheel that feel like they're 'kings' of the road unable to see around them and almost getting taken out because they don't check blind spots or look down to notice I'm there. Happens when I'm on my motorcycle too. Now they're making "taller sedans".

    1. Higher seat height but normal step in height is great for people with bad backs
    2. Toyota is probably going for great power/fuel efficiency/price balance with 340hp
    3. Sedan will be quieter than an SUV and the loss in practicality is probably acceptable given the audience is less likely to haul big bulky things
    4. Huge wheels and normal ground clearance help to give the sedan a sleeker look for people who aren't fans of the SUV

I can't imagine paying a premium for a full-size sedan and get an economy level interior.
This Crown is simply shifting the luxury scale towards more to the Lexus for consumers who wants both premium exterior and interior.
The Avalon was a great happy medium of exterior and interior quality for consumers who wanted Toyota luxury without spending Lexus dollars.

  • @CapitalJ25

The interior seems so incongruous to the exterior, like the design and materials were pulled out of the Toyota parts bin. The exterior design, powertrain, and tech look dope.

The crown used to be the affordable version of lexus LS400. It's super reliable, quite, very comfortable on long highway trip. Looks and feels premium. Now I see it more like a fancy version of Toyota corolla.

After so many decades, Toyota does not finally create boring cars. And especially in relation to the German VW still makes reliable cars. Because Made In Germany died in 1992.

Subaru called this type of vehicle a Sport Utility Sedan, or "SUS" in the early 00's when they gave the legacy the same treatment.
I am not a fan of it; I don't like CUVs, so why would I like something with all of the shortcomings of a CUV (high ride height, crap handling, worse fuel economy) with none of the advantages (cargo capacity)? Performance wagon please & thank you.

Nice job Tommy! This car is weird. It is tall like you would need if it was an EV with a skateboard platform. Maybe an EV version will come. As is this thing to looks like a flop waiting to happen. The Ioniq 6 will be kind of tall also. I would so choose that before the crown. The space looks just as good and the interior of the Ioniq 6 and being an EV make this thing look like it is from 5 years ago.

The Crown line is a family of vehicles. This high-roof configuration makes more sense with the wagon or hatch variants. From what I saw in the media we will eventually get those too. It's confusing that Toyota leads off with this sedan. It doesn't replace the Avalon nor does it provide the utility as other Crown models do. Perhaps Toyota's product line is just getting too complex.

Funny thing, the Crown was the top line model in the 60s and early 70s imported into the states it was luxurious, so selling it with hard plastic interior parts is kind of a letdown.

  • @texasclawhammer6578

What I’m not sold on is despite being taller than a sedan it’s still low compared to an SUV or Truck so you’re not gaining a better view than either of those vehicle types. 2nd. One of the advantages of a sedan is better handling, will that be true of an elevated sedan? I do think the exterior looks good but the interior finishes are not acceptable if the price point will be over $50k fully loaded.
