@@2001himax Good morning Norman, when doing an oil change should I use oil from your local Motorcycle shop or can I buy the oils identified for mortorcycle (like castrol 10W40 motorcycle oil) at your local Walmart. The Suzuki dealer said that there was different additive in there oils than what you would find at your local Walmart is that true or was he feeding me a line. Thanks Paul
@@Paul-nj1sw Hi Paul, I see a lot of people use Wal-Mart Mobil 1 oil in their bikes. I use it in my Suzuki. Now for my 1970 Harley FLH I asked a man at Auto Zone if he could get me oil for the bike and he said he could get an oil for my bike and he researched it then told me that Harley oil has additives that only Harley has so I only buy Harley oil for the Harley. Check the difference in price for Wal-Mart oil and the dealer price. I don't think your dealer was telling you wrong. There could be different additives in it. If the difference in price isn't too outrageous go with the dealer oil. Hope this helps you. Norman

Hello! I just bought a Boulevard C50 and have heard about the dry spline issue. I figure it’s best to be safe rather than sorry and I decided I’m going to grease up the drive shaft. Thank you so much for this video, should make the process nice and easy. Definitely subscribing, keep it up!
I just buttoned everything up, it went very well. I wasn’t sure if I was going to do this in the first place but I’m happy I did. One little dab of grease on the shaft, and the spines were completely dry. I think I saved a lot of money, a huge headache, and possibly the bike tonight!

Thank you for this great video. I live in Pakistan and recently purchased a pre-owned 2013 M50. It had very less miles on it but I assume the previous owner was not very meticulous in caring about it. Your videos definitely give me the know how I need to maintain my Suzuki. Will surely take it out to my local workshop and ask them to lube the shaft splines for years of trouble free riding. Thank you.

Been awhile since this video, but I just got me 2005 M50 last week. Guess I'll check that drive shaft. Not so scary after this video!! Thanks. I have a Triumph Rocket III and when I had the rear tire replaced I did the drive shaft on it. But never hurts to see it on the the one coming up!!
Tom Patterson in Ohio. I got a 2005 Boulevard in September 2019. I started watching your videos and I removed the driveshaft and there was no grease on it, but it looked like new. There is 15000 miles on the bike. I have done or doing other things you suggest. Thanks for the info and keep doing the videos. Great job.
Hi Tom, I have been working on the idle problem that many others have too with the Boulevard C50s. Some took their bikes to the dealers and got no help. Have you heard of this? Watch for my next video on this problem. Still have not found the answer to this. Norman
I first checked mine at the same point, after I saw what could happen on the VR forum; as you said, I saw no grease, but the splines were pristine. I now do this with every rear tire change, but I use molybendum PASTE, and the splines still look like new. I use high-temp aircraft grade grease on the drive sprocket and axle.
I have been looking all over Google and TH-cam for 17:00, I took out the shaft on my 1981 Honda CB900C and the gears are very difficult to spin. But at 17:00 in your video you show how easy it is to spin them. So I need to fix or replace mine.
Hi Alec, Being a shaft drive your bike must have oil in the back end that you change like mine? I would try this first. Drain the oil, Have the drain plug out and the filler plug out. Then take a can of break clean and spray through the holes into the final drive while you turn the part that I show at 17;00 . See if that frees it up any. If it doesn't then I would put the drain plug back in and fill it with kerosene then turn it by hand and try to free it up. Next use break clean again to get all the kerosene out. Let it set and dry out. If it is still hard to turn put a stick of wood on the rear drive and put the other end on your ear and turn it slowly to hear if it sounds like it is rubbing. Last thing is I would tear the final drive apart and see what is going on with it. If you need a new final drive try looking on e-bay under used parts or salvaged parts. I found parts that are from wrecked bike that are a lot cheaper than new. Hope this helps. Norman.
Thank you for the great video,I am new to your channel, wanting to learn all I can ,I am looking to buy my second boulevard, with a sidecar for my wife, thanks again keep the great videos coming.

@@ElplebeTex , Me too. As I say in my videos, "It's what works for me." But I will trade work for money. I just hate having to take the gas tank off. Back when I was redoing my 1970 FLH Electric Glide I respoked the wheels. Four of them. Two on the bike, one on the sidecar and the spare tire. Talk about a pain. I first had the Harly bike shop do one. When I got it back and it was not running true enough for me so I redid it. Ask them and they said it could be out .030. I got it around .006 to .008. I just took more time to do it. Ride safe,, Norman.
Hey thanks for the video. It was very helpful for me in lubing my M50 driveshaft. I noticed that when I took mine apart that there was some RTV silicone residue on the metal gasket where the shaft bolts on. I also notice a little moisture seemed to have gotten into mine as there was just a bit of surface rust. I cleaned it all off really well and use some more RTV gasket maker when I put it back together.
Hi Robert, You did good. The rust may have been from the bike getting cold and then warm. Also if it sets on a cement floor it can draw moisture up through the bike. Put wood under the tires when not in use. If you take the battery out at any time set it on wood. Norman.

@@2001himax took my final drive off today, cleaning it up as you did in the video. Will any wheel bearing grease work or do I need a certain kind? Thanks so much for the video and the help. James
@@HotWingz08 Any wheel bearing grease will do. Better yet , marine grease is better. That grease is used for like boats where there is moisture. Auto parts should have it. Norman.
Hi Chris, Thank you for your comment. One thing to consider if you are thinking about buying the Suzuki Boulevard C 50 is they seem to have an idle issue. I have been trying to fix mine for a while and may have to take it to the dealer. There are some videos on You-Tube about this problem. Any bike you are going to buy look at reviews to help you make your choice. Norman.
Interesante video! Me puso a pensar que sería posible cambiar la relación del diferencial del c50 quizás por uno de c90 y así darle más kilómetros por litro, aunque le quite algo de fuerza.
Have you ever disassembled the end of the shaft at the tire end? I'm seeing a lot of posts on Facebook where it's all rusted out inside there even though it appears to be encased.
Thank you for watching. Leg is back to normal but Lois and I came out of Texas Roadhouse and I fell , caught my toe on the curb that was not painted yellow, went down hard on my left side. Hurt my hand and jammed my left shoulder. No broken bones but a lot of pain. Will take time to heal. Can't use my clutch hand. Always something. Norman.
I heard you say in the video that you have taken some previous ones down. That is a shame, as I was intending on using the valve video after I finished stripping the corrosion from the frame and swing arm. I hadn't found another video that decently addressed this.
Great video. I've got noise coming from mine..don't know if its coming from the differentials or what...I recently changed my gear oil and seen metal shavings in the oil. Thinking that's where the noise is coming from. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Casey, Shavings in the oil means something is a miss. I would take the rear wheel off and look over where the wheel and drive unit mate, then I would pull the driveshaft out to see if there any shavings on the front end of the shaft. Clean everything and look for wear or rubbed marks anywhere. When cleaning these parts I take them outside and use gas. Let them outside to dry. Watch my video "Fire in the hole" to see why. I also tell about finding parts on e-bay. Used parts are so much cheeper than new. Hope this helps, Norman.
What really helps is having your specific bikes shop service manual. It will help in reassembly of parts and to what specifications that they need to be tightened down etc. I had a Suzuki Boulevard M50 limited but never needed to lubricate the shaft as the grease that was applied at from the factory was in good shape.
I enjoyed the video, thanks. I am wondering about the splines on the rear drive where the drives shaft goes into the rear drive? Do you worry about lubricating that end?
Hi Paul, On my video at the timeline at 26;10 I show lubing the rear part of the shaft. All other parts like the pinion gear and bearings are lubed by way of the oil in the final drive of this unit. I change this oil whenever I do an oil change on the bike, every 3000 miles. Hope this helps. Norman
@@2001himax I did see that Norman but I was speaking about the rear end of the propeller shaft where it plugs into the coupling for input to the rear drive. I would think those matching splines or gears need grease periodically as well.
Just bought a Boulevard....2013....watched your video on the valve adjustment.....thanks got it saved.....I see the storage box on yours, can I ask where you got it?.....Thnks for all your information video's.....A BIG help......
Hi Bob, The bag on the back of the Boulevard was put on by my good friend before I bought it. It is a SHAD. You can find them on E-Bay. On the back of my Harley I have a box that was sold on E-Bay and was used as a police radio box. There was no radio in the box when i got it. I looked a long time to find one then saw a guy was selling three of them and he was from Texas. To me it's like a glove box. The Shad box= I can fit my full faced helmet with the Go-Pro on it and have a little room left. I just put a video up about working on my Harley. Hope this helps. Norman
@@NCHAAK I looked at the Shad boxes and saw that they come from over seas. If you are in the U.S.A. it may take some time to get it due to the virus. I am waiting on a cable to fix my Suzuki Boulevard from China. Taking 20 to 30 days to get it. Norman
@@2001himax Yes I saw that....WOW 20 to 30 days, unreal........I guess I have to get a pair of backrest brackets to mount it to....yours looks so cool especially how the backrest cushion is mounted to it.....thanks again.....oh by the way, there were so many to chose from, can you give me some measurements to make sure I get the right one...I noticed there was a double one, looked really big....lol...
@@NCHAAK The owner before me put the backrest on the bag. He simply drilled four holes and bolted it on. The size ( measuring on the outside of the bag) = 11 1/2" tall - 19" wide and 14" front to back. Hope this helps. Norman
Hi Hany, On the shaft and the end I put grease with my finger I use wheel bearing grease. In the final drive , at the rear wheel, I use Pennzoil SAE 80W-90 GL -5 gear oil or Valvoline SAE 80W-90 gear oil. It comes in a quart bottle and will do around three changes of oil. Auto parts stores have it and I think Wal-Mart has it too. Hope this helps. Norman.
Hi Richard, Great bike but as you can see by some of my videos some of the fuel injection Boulevards have trouble with the idling. Mine has this trouble. If I were looking to buy a used bike I would buy an older one with carbs. Carbs can be cleaned an if they needed to be replaced they don't cost a small fortune. My video on buying the Honda ST 1100 shows I bought it due to it having carbs. I got it for $1800 and yes I did a lot of work to get it back in shape. An older Boulevard would need to be gone over but once done would be a great choice. Just my thoughts. Look up on You-Tube about Suzuki Boulevard idle issue and you will see what I mean. Norman.
Hi Michael, It's a "Shinko" tire. I get around 9000 miles on these tires, that is changing them before all the tread is gone. When I change a tire I put in a new tube and rim liner. I get my tires from e-bay. Whitewalls cost a little more. Also you can check www.jpcycles.com I think e-bay is a little cheaper. When you have the tire, tube and rim liner off clean the inner part of the rim where the rim liner goes with a wire brush and spray some paint in there to protect from rust. Make sure the paint is dry before putting it back together. Some say that it takes 100 miles to scrub in a new tire. Before I put the new tire on I use soft scrub and a brush and scrub it inside and out to get the release film off that they use when making the tire to get it out of the mold. I take it easy for a little while with a new tire. Ride safe. Norman.
Loved watching your videos over the past 3 years since I became a rider. I brought a 2008 M50. I have been noticing when I start my bike after the clutch is depressed and gear in neutral, when starting the bike it moves forward. Can you please tell me what could be cause of this. Again thanks for your informative videos.
Hi Rich, On You-Tube put in "Two Wheel Obsession Full Clutch Adjustment". I would try this first. I tried to send the site to you but it wouldn't copy and paste. Norman
Great video! I’m wondering if this is why my driveshaft is making a low grinding sound in low gears and a high whine at high speeds. I have plenty of final gear oil so it’s not that. Any suggestions?
Hi Miguel, You need to find the problem. Get a workbook on your year and model bike. There are other videos on the driveshaft that other people have put up. Research all you can. Something is wearing out if it makes that sound. All my best. Norman.
I recently watched another video where a guy went a step further and removed the plastic oil seal/dust boot and circlip from the shaft on final drive side and lubed those splines as well. The guy mentioned that it was really important to do that, but it wasn't done in this video. Is it actually necessary or is it overkill?
@@2001himax Thanks for the reply, Norman. I'll order those two parts before I tackle this job. I'm going to also try changing both tires myself which I've never done either 🤞🏼
@@JW-bw8nj Just make sure the little round circle on the tire is lined up with the valve stem. That helps with the balance of the wheel. I have a video on using the Harbor Freight wheel balancer. I will find it for you. Norman.
Just bought a BL800, and am wondering if I should have the mechanic pull the shaft out to inspect. The mechanic suggested to do that when is time for a new tire. The bike is 2006 with 20000 miles and runs perfectly. What are your thoughts?
Did my Intruder m800 yesterday. The splines had NO factory grease whatsoever. Fortunately no visible wear either. Not sure I can say the same for the Universal Joint but that's for another day...
35:30. When you are reinstalling what you call the "subframe", are there torque specs for the bolts or do you just put them on tight with a little spot of blue thread lock.
Anything around the motor I check the work book specs. Around the frame and things like that I have been working on bikes so much it's more of a feel. That is my general way. Norman.
@@2001himax unfortunately, at the moment all I have is a Haynes Manuel, and they barely even touched on the subject of shaft/final drive removal. I've got to find a better service manual.
I just completed a clutch job for the first time but I do not have a bike stand. I have a very noisy transmission but she’s shifting great and it’s going in gear with no problems. I like to take my transmission apart during the winter but I need a lift to hold the bike up. Where can I order a lift stand to hold up my bike? What brand do you recommend? I like your explanation the video was great! my Boulevard has almost 44,000 miles I’ll be curious to see what the driveshaft looks like.
th-cam.com/video/zDWTYrXRRis/w-d-xo.html Hi DJR, This is the lift I use and love it. One thing is that the lift has to be on one side or the other to use. This could be a problem at times to get in where you need to be. Also you need to make a brace under it to make it steady. If you have the room and money the table lift may be a better choice for you. Hope this helps you. Norman.

Hi Mohamad, I buy "SHINKO" tires from E-Bay. Cheep tires but I get around 9000 miles on them. I balance my own tires and take time to get them near perfect. I have a video on this.
I haven't changed my fork oil on this bike. I have changed the fork oil on my Harley. The Suzuki have their forks upside down and my have to be taken off the bike. The Clymer book would be needed to change it. The book would tell how much oil to put back in it. There are two amounts of oil. One is if you would be taking the forks all apart as if you were rebuilding them and cleaning all the old out or if you are just drained the oil and were replacing it. Replacing it would take a little less due to the old oil that is clinging inside. Hope this helps. Norman.
It depends on the outside temp. and if you are riding in stop and go traffic or open roads. A hot day in town it will come on when stopped at a red light waiting to go where same temp. on the open road with the air flowing over the radiator it may not come on at all. Norman.
Great video. I did my c50 last yr. I used castrol Pyroplex ES2 Grease NLGI. Someone said it needs a grease eith Moly. Will I be ok? I've rode about 2000km since doing it. Wondering if i should do it again with a Moly grease.
I just removed my driveshaft (06 c-50) after watching your video. It was dry! I could see some lube inside the tube, but the spline was dry. Maybe there was some graphite at rear end where you cleaned with Q tip. I'm glad I checked! Another thing. Should there be Loctite on 3 acorn nuts and the Allen head at rear? Also, drained differential. Should it also have Loctite? Thanks for your video.
On my C50T 2006, the drain plug bolt for the final oil has a recess that goes around the end that had a washer like part in it. Small round piece that fit around the inside of the bolt end. Do you know what that might be? It came out in two halves and then I brilliantly lost part of it :(. What does that bold do besides act as a plug? Should I order a new one?
Hi Ed, The half that you still have, is it metal, rubber or plastic. With a recess like you describe I would think it's rubber. It is likely an O ring to seal between the bolt and the hole. If it is hard it became hard and brittle with age. You can take the bolt to the hard wear store and find an O ring where they have them for faucets. Find one that fits in the recess. Hope this helps. Norman.
seems like dry splines is a common thing, my Ural had dry also from factory. im sure grease is needed but i have never seen much damage to splines over the years.
I greased it when I took the rear wheel off to put a new tire on. I found out about this from watching "two wheel obsession" with Brian Glenn. He shows a lot about the Suzuki Boulevard. Check him out. Norman.

Norman

@@yvwic50 A little grease on the splines will take care of them meshing together.
Norman.
Not sure if I would go that far,, But with your Guidance , I would think about it!! Good Video Sir!!

Hey thanks for the video. It was very helpful for me in lubing my M50 driveshaft.
Norman.

Hope this helps, Norman.
th-cam.com/video/Ev5Pec3IErg/w-d-xo.html
What really helps is having your specific bikes shop service manual. It will help in reassembly of parts and to what specifications that they need to be tightened down etc. I had a Suzuki Boulevard M50 limited but never needed to lubricate the shaft as the grease that was applied at from the factory was in good shape.
It's best that people check their shaft end for grease. A lot of them have little or no grease. Mine was very dry.
Honda sells high pressure grease put on once that’s all you need I pulled my 750 Vulcan and the splice were starred rust
Thank you for the info. Norman

Hey... Somerset County PA here... clicked on this video because I'm looking to buy a boulevard
Norman.
Great video Norman Have to do this to mine. Thanks much.
Hi Jeff, Thanks. Norman
Very good video. Very informative and well told. Could you please tell us what brand is the new rear whitewall tire?
Ride safe. Norman.

Norman.
Thank you ,I have a 2005 c50t how warm does it have to get before the coolant fan comes on.I just bought it.
Hi Sean, I would wait till you put a new back tire on then put Molly on it. It will be fine till then. Norman.
Thank you for the video. Have you replaced the u-joint?
Thank you for watching. I have had no trouble with the U-joint. Norman
@@2001himax thank you.
I didn't put Loctite on mine but it wouldn't hurt to put some on. Just a drop. Norman
Norman.
I read that that bolt is magnetic. So, now I need to worry that something sheared off inside :(
Good afternoon! Great video
Hi Aranob, Thank you for watching. Norman.
Thanks for the video. Great explanation 👌
Thank you for watching. Norman
seems like dry splines is a common thing, my Ural had dry also from factory. im sure grease is needed but i have never seen much damage to splines over the years.
I greased it when I took the rear wheel off to put a new tire on. I found out about this from watching "two wheel obsession" with Brian Glenn. He shows a lot about the Suzuki Boulevard. Check him out. Norman.
Muchas gracias por el tutorial señor!!!!!
Hi Josemasergio, Thank you. Have a great day and all my best to you and your family. Norman
I like the Yamalube grease for this type of application.
Hi David, Use what is best for you. Last night here is Western Pennsylvania it snowed very lightly, 31 temp. I think we are going to get warmer for a while but winter is coming. Ride safe. Norman.
Awesome explanation!! Thank you.
Hi Jorge, Thank you for your comment and watching my video. Norman.
