The only reason it matters is because he was the weak link in the movie *Apt Pupil.* The 1998 Bryan Singer version only got made because the originally intended version with Ricky Schroder from right around the time *Silver Spoons* went off the air ran out of money and Ricky outgrew the part before they reached a deal that gave them enough money to finish the film but not to reshoot existing scenes so the continuity would match. Ricky was in *Crimson Tide* (just barely), while his 1980s sitcom put him alongside two future *Simpsons* guest stars: Gary Coleman and Jason Bateman, one of whom got a whole third act to himself and the other was wasted on a two-line cameo that existed to promote a show Fox jerked around and whose Netflix reboot was ruined by a sex scandal. And there you have it: a joke that holds up and a joke that does not hold up in the same episode.

Outside of Russia there was Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. All of which were their own semi-autonomous soviet republics. The Soviet Union was the union of all of these separate SSR’s. That’s why it’s official name is the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

@Soul Studio exactly. What I see now more from the part of the West is a new rise of Russophobia - this time without the red scare, and a fetishization of and feigned empathy for Ukrainians, the new token white/European victim of an "Evil Country" (AKA Economic Rival to the US/"The West").
Other than those general points it's not in any way similar to the Soviet Union. The Russian as well as the Ukrainian oligarchy have nothing to do with Stalin let alone Lenin, and consider communism a "blind alley", like Putin had been quoted before. The only other comparable thing is imperialism, which the Russian Empire had before communism anyways, and wasn't invented with the Revolution, neither did it die after the USSR Fall. We can all see that NATO is an imperialistic force, the USA way more than Russia, and more deadly than any other, China is imperialistic too, etc. Not just those "filthy pinkie soviet commies" (read this in an cowboy accent), which "The West" still hasn't moved on from using as a boogeyman for justifying their delusions and desires of supremacy.
