It's specifically a joke about the 1960 Nixon-Kennedy US Presidential debate, the first to be nationally televised. The average viewer thought Kennedy to be young, handsome and trustworthy, whereas Nixon was perceived as old, sick-looking and untrustworthy: he sweated like a pig under the studio lights, had a visible five-o-clock shadow and wore a light colored suit that blended in to the background on the low-res black and white TV sets of the day. The actual debate was very cordial and they basically agreed on most of the topics, but Nixon came off far worse on primetime TV, which, to a guy like Homer, is all he needs to know.

Totally agree. This was the era when The Simpsons was the ultimate anti-establishment show, brilliantly written and multilayered. Once it became part of the establishment it totally lost its purpose. I'm surprised no one realised after the movie it was time to call it a day
I feel bad for Homer. All the man was trying to do was not let Barney drive drunk and Barney told them to do the breathalyzer as payback. Yes, it was likely a little too much tough love, but Homer could have gotten them home at least this once.

I love The Sopranos and Breaking Bad, but Golden Era Simpsons is as good as TV ever got. So many jokes and they all land. It's also so multi-layered, there are surface jokes, subversive jokes, just so much happening that you can literally watch it dozens of times and catch something new every time.

The first 8 or 9 years of this show were truly some amazing and hilarious TV. As you said, they really knew what they were doing.

This was when it’s stream of consciousness/ ‘run on’ form of comedy (just go with it/ one absurd thing after another) when it works it’s pretty funny
If you want a taster of how they tried this type of humor- go back to the Tracey ullman show (which coincidentally features Dan and Julie from the Simpsons) they tried to attempt this so many times - but the results were mixed
The newer ones are kinda funny too...at least they can be on occasion

I love The Sopranos and Breaking Bad, but Golden Era Simpsons is as good as TV ever got. So many jokes and they all land. It's also so multi-layered, there are surface jokes, subversive jokes, just so much happening that you can literally watch it dozens of times and catch something new every time.
When Wiggum goes rolling away is still hilarious 😂. One of my favorite episodes.

Simpsons had the perfect platform. All the character personalities were perfect to keep going. Instead they changed who everyone was and ruined it. They had an amazing platform to keep the show strong.They screwed up major.
