Hader has said that it played to absolute dead silence during dress rehearsal. During the main show, they followed Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin and just before they went on stage, Brolin turned to them and said, "Ok, guys... Let's shut these fuckers up."
It's a real testament to everyone in this sketch that they committed so hard to something that was not only ridiculous but also clearly didn't land super hard.

Ok I know the entire audience was basically dead quiet for this entire sketch, but I absolutely love it. It's such a dumb, silly concept but every actor is giving it their all, Brolin's reactions are absolutely hilarious and the "he shot himself" at the end is such a dark, unexpected twist. I genuinely adore this sketch.
A good tell on any sketch is how it ends and when it ends in a death that usually means the writers just had nowhere else to go in the time allotted. Of course this was a purely conceptual sketch and all about commitment and intensity. Overall it worked for me but I don't love endings like this one had.

I just saw Hader talking about this sketch. He said it bombed at the table read and bombed even worse at dress rehearsal, but Lorne Michaels loved it so instead of yanking it he moved it up to right after Weekend Update. Hader said the audience was so confused and silent and you could hear everything, even people in the audience whispering, "Whaaaat?" and gasps of non-approval.
The fact that Josh Brolin is willing to do a sketch like this and has the confidence to allow himself to be the butt of a joke proves how cool he really is. He’s the anti Steven Segal.

I met Josh Brolin the Monday after this sketch aired and asked him what the deal was with this sketch. He was a bit surprised the audience didn’t like it very much and said he liked it. He asked me if I liked it and at the time I said, “it was a little weird.” I was being honest at the time, but since then I’ve come to appreciate Hader and Forte more and it’s grown on me.

I think it's a play on boys saying fart face to each other, and growing up and bringing it into a professional meeting with real life implications but played up to 11 with slap stick.
Brolins "NO,NO,GOD!! I HATE YOU SO MUCH!!" with the hair flopping around is just too much. The genius lies in him being perfectly okay giving someone shit and all it to took to break him was call him the exact same thing. Seen this about ten times, it's always gonna hold up.

Will Forte commits so hard to every sketch, I can't remember ever seeing him break character, regardless of how utterly stupid it is. It's quite amazing. Hader is one of the all-time greats, too, but he busts up as much as Fallon used to. I think Forte made him step up his game here...

I have never seen Forte in a skit where he didn’t do an Outstanding Job! HE WAS A SOLID PERFORMER!

Bill and Will have told this legend of Fartface several times (as did Mulaney) but the way Bill told it on Danson's podcast was the way I wanted to hear it; Bill was wary of its lack of laughs, Will was still proud of it, and Bill loves Will for that... (*loved the Will suggested Bill talk about it on Danson)
The best part about this sketch is everyone involved in the sketch knew it was a bomb they knew it wasn't going to go over as well as they'd hoped and they still acted the s*** out of it and they gave it their all
